Jim Hoft, Known as the “Stupidest Man on the Internet,” Suspended by Twitter

Wingnuts • Views: 41,743

He’s been at it for many years, spreading lies and conspiracy theories and bigotry from white supremacist websites, and helping push it into mainstream conservatism (which they don’t resist very much, of course). In the Trump era, his gutter-level hate site was actually granted White House press credentials, because his deranged, dim-witted, sycophantic writing style appealed to the narcissist in chief.

But today the ship of the fabled Stupidest Man on the Internet has run aground. Jim Hoft has joined the Choir Invisible. He is now one of The Deplatformed. Permanently suspended. Where’s Jim? I don’t know, I can’t see him any more.

If you use the LGF search tool for “hoft,” you’ll get an idea of how prolific and relentless this weird, twisted guy has been for two decades. And Fox News has picked up dozens of his “BREAKING WOW BOOM” stories, which almost always turn out to be dishonest, or distorted, or completely made up.

So long, Jim, you will absolutely not be missed from Twitter.

GFS model indicates down here in the corner might get some drizzle on the 13th or 14th, but only around a tenth of an inch.

The Sierras should get some snow, though, so that will be good.

But still looking way too dry for the rainy season.

Charles, I’m in the UK, and I’m seeing these ads appearing in the pages. It’s very creepy. “Exit” is the name of an organisation that supports assisted suicide.

“Britain First” / “exituk.org

EDIT: I’ve checked the URL, and it appears to be a site of people recovering from extreme right wing politics.

The “Shouting fire in a crowded theater” thing absolutely needs to be applied to spreading misinformation on emergency public health issues. They are literally getting people killed.

Anti-vaxxers and COVID deniers getting locked up or fined for their bullshit, especially right now, does not a police state make.

I think that Trump has so many criminals in his orbit that he couldn’t have even remembered everyone he needed to pardon to cover up all the bullshit. I’m surprised he didn’t just pardon everyone. I mean literally everyone. Blanket pardon for everyone in Federal Prison, currently on trial, or under investigation. For anything.

EVERYONE! It will be tremendous, nobody pardons people like I do. I’m better at The pardon than any one else.

That’d be a hard no. Any illegal activity after Xmas eve is fair game for prosecutors who, for pretty good reason, feel a little burnt by Trump’s wave of pardons for criminals.

Sunny here on the left coast too. Got up to 65 but with light winds I was quite warm by the time I got back from swimming the dogs. We filled a Park’s Seed starter after spending some time working on a puzzle. Looking to grow a bigger garden as we had a pretty good winter with it arugula, tatsoi, green onions, collards, and various herbs.

More on that GOP staffer arrested for child pornography

washingtonpost.com

Ruben Verastigui is accused of receiving and possessing child pornography between last April and this month, according to a criminal complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The 27-year-old was arrested Friday evening at his apartment in Northeast Washington, where police executed a search warrant. Investigators said they found “several files of child pornography” on his cellphone, along with a chat conversation in which he allegedly discussed exchanging the files and videos. During an interview with investigators, Verastigui admitted to receiving some of the files, according to the complaint.

Verastigui worked as a digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference as recently as last July.

As I said in an earlier thread, this freak deserves the death penalty.

I think the alignment of the small squares triggers some neurons that wind up interpreting them as “line direction”.

You never see what is really there, because the visual system takes all sorts of shortcuts. Whenever you look at a line drawing you are reaching straight through the first layers of the visual system to directly stimulate the edge detection system. A line drawing is actually an optical illusion.

Judge Orders OAN to Pay Rachel Maddow and MSNBC $250,000 in Attorney Fees For Filing Frivolous Defamation Lawsuit

No one here will be surprised that “reality TV” is built on smoke and mirrors.

Put simply, much of such programs are lies.

I’ve been following various HGTV shows for a couple of years now, going through the claims of all the flippers… and sometimes the claims measure up… and sometimes they don’t.

One of the worst offenders was last year’s Brother versus Brother, where the Scott brothers supposedly compete in flipping houses.

I knew at the time (October 2020) that the 2020 series had to be a bit off… because they didn’t mention the pandemic. Even granted that the shows take a few months in TV production to air, the show content still had to be done in early and mid 2020.

Drew Scott (and wife) live in Mid-Wilshire of Los Angeles, a not-inexpensive area, but the show advertises it as Hancock Park (a bit snootier and upscale neighborhood), though I think the boundary for Hancock Park is actually a couple of blocks away from the houses the Scott brothers chose to feature, one of which was Drew’s next-door neighbor, the other one a couple of blocks north on the same street (just south of Beverly Blvd.)

Anyway, the six-episode season ended in October, one of the brothers was declared the winner.

But I knew there was a problem because the winning brother’s house was still listed for sale on Zillow.

Maybe later I’ll post the nitty details, but the bottom line is that the reported sales price is false, the reported profit is false, one of the brother’s remodeled houses did not sell (according to both Zillow and the LA county tax collector)… and so on.

But more to the point of the badness of flippers: in the end it’s all about image, not substance. They destroy life (landscaping, mature trees, etc.) in order to put in astroturf. Kitchens are made so large that they dwarf restaurants, kitchens in which little cooking will ever be done. Bathrooms so big and with so much bling that people are not going to want to clean them. And so on. And on HGTV most shows are about selling you on Wayfair… a company that might be fine for some things but if I’m buying a $5M+ house I’m not going to want finishes and furnishings that everybody in town also uses, most of which look like they’ll be quite dated in 5 or 6 years.

Anyway, I maintain that real estate remains the biggest scam in America (outside of religion).

Speaking of real-estate, the January report is out on San Diego county real estate sales data.

Average detached home price sold in January 2021?

$1,007,467.

Up 17% year over year.

Of course the median price is much lower at only $744,000, but that is still up 12% year over year.

And this is the county average, which means it takes into account all the less expensive houses in the east part of this rather large county. We’re about 4x the area of the state of Rhode Island.

So houses in the city of San Diego itself, or any beach community, will be much higher.

The year over year price rise is because there is almost no stock on hand to sell.

I cannot predict the real estate market, in the sense that I can’t tell you if the prices will drop when the pandemic is over, but I know that there is a conspiracy (let me use that term loosely) among everybody involved in real estate - from current owners to real estate sales bodies to lenders to the local county assessor - to not let prices go down.

Because as a society we’ve decided that property shouldn’t go down, only up.

Except of course sometimes it does go down, but not often.

Anyway, I think any young person who is starting out in this county, or any coastal city on the west coast, is going to find they are at the bottom of a very steep pyramid. Even starting salaries for highly coveted Electrical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering graduates are not going to put them on a salary path to buying a detached home of any modernity. Until they can work themselves up to some sort of junior executive position they just won’t have a salary that can afford houses.

The way to go is to start your own business and work the tax angles our society sets up… to try and “make it” in places like here. And since most businesses fail, only a minority of people will be successful enough along this path to afford to live here.

To me, this is all part of the bigger problem we face as a society, problems from which we divert our eyes.

re: #138 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

It doesn’t have to be a conspiracy. All it requires is that local governments pay more attention to the needs of homeowners (who pay property tax directly) over renters (who also pay it, but indirectly).

I find myself feeling pressure from both directions. On one hand, our house is our retirement . We plan to sell and move someplace cheaper - which is literally anywhere! So the higher the price goes, the better.

OTOH, with rents where they are, it feels like The Boys will NEVER be able to afford to move out, so the lower rents go, the better.

I see lots of housing going up along El Camino Real, but it’s nowhere near enough!

It is not in the interest of local taxing boards to lower their revenue, so they don’t want property values to go down.

Texas housing prices may not be insane YET, but the PROPERTY TAXES can be more than the payment on the note on the house. My sister’s house (just under 2500 square feet) on the eastern edge of Harris County about a mile north of I-10 has a value of just slightly less than $350K. Their tax bill for 2020 was almost $6700. My mother’s house on the east side of the East Valley of Phoenix, (1900 square feet) is just under $250K. The tax on that was $1600. Yeah, we have an income tax here, but I can guarantee you my mother is not paying over $5,000 in income tax.

And, frankly, I’m glad we have a state income tax as opposed to a very high property tax because Texas’ property tax system is completely fuxxored. School funding is based of the property tax and some districts (poorer, minority) get the shaft as a result. It’s been a problem since forever in Texas and there is no political will to fix it because it’s defacto segregation at work.

Thing is, the reason housing prices keep rising sharply here in California is because there is stiff competition to buy housing.

Because of all the people.

In wingnut-land there is some fantasy that everyone is leaving California, but if that was the case then housing would be easy to find.

But as I keep reporting for San Diego county, we have a housing shortage.

re: #156 mmmirele

Yes, property tax rates are high in Texas because they decided that it best to ghetto-ize this or that community. The last thing Texas wants is to redistribute wealth from the rich neighborhoods to those people.

Utah school allowing parents to opt students out of Black History Month curriculum

A Utah charter school that incorporates Black History Month into its lesson plans is now facing backlash from some after the school announced it was allowing parents to opt students out of the curriculum.

Maria Montessori Academy Director Micah Hirokawa announced the decision in a Friday post on the school’s private Facebook page, according to local news outlet the Standard-Examiner.

Hirokawa wrote that he “reluctantly” sent a letter to families stating that administrators were allowing them “to exercise their civil rights to not participate in Black History Month at the school.”

Hirokawa said in the post that “a few families” had asked not to participate in the curriculum, though he declined to tell the Standard-Examiner the exact number of parents who had contacted the school or the reasons they gave for making the request.

The public charter school director added that the demand from parents “deeply saddens and disappoints me.”

re: #148 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

It is not in the interest of local taxing boards to lower their revenue, so they don’t want property values to go down.

Is this the part that is in the city of San Diego (I thought it was pretty well built out some time ago), or in the county north of it (which cuts through pricey Rancho Santa Fe, where restrictions keep any construction away.) ?

I don’t know what it is in San Diego. On the Peninsula, it’s the main, non-freeway route up North and South. A lot of retail. Where the new apartment blocks are going in was a lot of strip malls and used car lots.
