CL’ed

I just had a back-and-forth conversation on faceplant with some of my TX glass artisans. Seems they (that live in TX) have no fucking clue how lopsided the power is for them to get hosed.

Yes, they all live in the blue-bits of Texas.

Cool! Bob announced that Rick Beato is going to be on his interview show tomorrow. They’re going to talk about copywrite law, so Rick should be pretty fired up. Nice to have Buzz back on the show after the parental care emergency.

Pro forced birth. Anti birth control. Anti choice.

If they were truly pro life they wouldn’t eat meat, wear fur or leather, and adopt every orphan they heard about.

They aren’t that. They’re sanctimonious, judgemental, bossy, and bitchy. They’re hypocrites to the nth degree.

That’s why I often refer to Republicans and Libertarians as barbarians. Libertarians don’t want to pay what civilization costs, and Republicans are opposed to civilization in principle.

Fortunately, only 24 hours (both times in NYC): the blackouts of 1977 and 2003.

Many times, underground power lines are fed from aboveground feeders. Almost all power feeders start out above ground when they come from the power plant or the grid.

My workplace and my apartment have had power failures as my colleagues and I live downtown with underground power. But we still go dark.

Record: 8 hours for me, and 6 hours at work, according to our UPS logs. We aren’t in Texas, but I’m logged into our VPN dealing with a 4-hour outage at work.

In late March, early April, back in the late 70s or early 80s there was a big HUGE ice storm in the St Louis area, and power lines brought down poles and all. We were without power for 10 days. As soon as the ice storm passed it became quite warm. We had probably 80 head of horses at the time. Horses in winter coats in warm weather drink A LOT. And if they can’t get it, they colic and die, so you can’t tell them to go thirsty for a while. We could not run the farm well pumps, so bought a 250 gallon tank, and for 10 days continuously were on the road going to fill up the tank, coming back and filling water tanks and buckets for the horses. Around the clock. We were REALLY happy to get the power back, let me tell you!

Even when we did have an electric one when I was a child, we still had 1 or more manual backups.

Reminds me of the Chicago Snowpocalypse of 1979, which was not handled particularly well by Bilandic, our city’s mayor of that time. (I was a city girl then) There was no Twitter, but the mayor repeatedly made mistakes in his public announcements about the state of the snow cleanup and expressed a sense of serious grievance — very different in style from Boyd — but vocally very upset with public response to the conditions in the city. The outcome of this fiasco was that Bilandic lost the election in May that year to Jane Byrne, who became the city’s first woman mayor, a job she never would have won without the failed response to the snowfall.

In college I had a friend who was told he couldn’t bring his hand lens (tiny magnifying glass) on a plane in case you could start a fire with it. This was back in the days when you could smoke, so lighters and matches were A-OK.

I watched “The Color of Money” last night for the first time in a few years. Fun fact: One of the marks that Tom Cruise hustles in a pool game is Iggy Pop.

This makes me a bit more hopeful if society does collapse that these people will kill themselves off long before they’re any trouble.

Via my 4chan reading husband, Texas is blaming the continued power outages on the feds not allowing them to use more fuel to run the plants. Uh, no, that’s not what the problem is, dear.

He’s trying to keep himself above the fray, and I admire that - I agree with that approach, in fact. But somebody in his administration needs to put on their hip waders, get into the shit pool that is Trump’s legacy, and start airing the dirty laundry.

I believe that’s a job for Merrick Garland. Who will be confirmed any day now.

Dad taught me how to use a P-51 when we used to eat C-Rations he’d get from the Surplus store. I thought it was fun to eat them…after Mom made sure that the cigarettes were removed from the box!

re: #99 Hecuba’s daughter

Memories of that mess while we were stranded on Harrison St. in Oak Park!

LOL I don’t even own an electric can opener. I don’t know if I ever had one, but I remember my parents had one, along with a drawer full of the regular kind.

I’m skeptical of the story.

I agree with dan that there probably some exaggeration to the story, if only because I’m not a “prepper” or a cosplay “patriot” and I’ve put more thought into emergency scenarios than that. But that might also be because I live in a state that A) experiences severe weather at least once a year and B) is prone to experiencing blackouts during such.

We’ve got power! The blessed juice. We were down for 46 hours.

My nebulizer works! I fired down a 3 ML shot of Albuterol right into my lungs. I’ll take another hit in an hour.

We got down to 8 degrees the last two mornings in South Austin after 6” of snow. I have never seen a major city paralyzed like this in my entire life. We have NO snow-moving/salting trucks in town.

TXDOT is completely overwhelmed. The roads they are responsible for in the City, (Congress Ave, Lamar, Ben White, Koenig, Barton Springs/Riverside, South 1st Street), haven’t been touched.

It’s been an omnishambles. Have I mentioned we haven’t had power for 46 hours?

At last, total honesty from the Ayn Rand brand of Republicans/ Libertarian assholes. They should enshrine this message for all to see- this is what you have been voting for the past 50 years.re: #9 PrairieQueen

Civilization is a thing to be destroyed in our modern GOP led by Libertarian nutballs. They want a warlord style leadership along the lines of the fictional Mad Max universe. If you think this is crazy talk you have not been paying attention to the far fringes of Libertarian Utopian voices calling for guns everywhere, survival of the fittest, summary executions and tribal loyalties above all else. The dystopian movies of the past 50 years have been their template for their desires of reality. They seek to make it manifest.

re: #13 The Pie Overlord!

The 1977 Blackout was longer for us than the 2003 blackout. We lost power for about a full day in 1977, but only a few hours during the 2003 blackout.

Luckily we didn’t lose power during Sandy, while we know people who lost power for days on end. My brother lost power for days and camped up with my folks, who also lost power, but didn’t have to worry about storm surge and all that came with that.

We also lost power from the Halloween ice storm a few years back, but again, that was only for less than a day.

We’ve been fortunate.
