CL’d at the death:

We’ve got power! The blessed juice. We were down for 46 hours.

My nebulizer works! I fired down a 3 ML shot of Albuterol right into my lungs. I’ll take another hit in an hour.

We got down to 8 degrees the last two mornings in South Austin after 6” of snow. I have never seen a major city paralyzed like this in my entire life. We have NO snow-moving/salting trucks in town.

TXDOT is completely overwhelmed. The roads they are responsible for in the City, (Congress Ave, Lamar, Ben White, Koenig, Barton Springs/Riverside, South 1st Street), haven’t been touched.

It’s been an omnishambles. Have I mentioned we haven’t had power for 46 hours?

Good to hear you have electricity again.

I wonder what political fallout, if any, there will be from this episode.

The blame-the-windmills game will only go so far. It sells TV time, but of course it’s not the real problem.

There has to be some Texans who know what the real problem.

GFS expected lower atmosphere temperature anomalies for the next two weeks, shows the significantly below normal temps in the south central part of the country continuing for another 48 hours or so, then changing to just a bit below normal.

But rejoice, by the end of the month the same region will be in a heat wave!

And a working heater! Even a gas heater needs the juice.

As for political fallout, some numbers:

Austin hasn’t been this cold since 1989;

We haven’t had this much snow since 1966;

It appears that we haven’t had this much snow, followed by continuous below freezing temperatures, since the Comanches were running the State and before records were kept.

We haven’t been above freezing for the past three day,s in fact, out of the mid-twenties.

It’s a century event. And it looks like we’re going to get an ice storm tonight that may drop a 1/2” on exposed surfaces. Which means means our electricity may be short-lived.

So yes, there’s going to be a shitpot of finger pointing, but, to repeat: It’s a century event.

But can you really expect municipalities to pay several hundred thousand dollars each for a fleet of bespoke vehicles that will slowly rot before needed? It’s a great public policy question (and the answer is NO. What you need is to equip your dump trucks to have snow plows attached).

I don’t expect Biden’s poll numbers to wow us, but I also don’t expect him to drop into the abyss that recent Repub presidents have experienced. And the reason is because the Dem base doesn’t get off on “controversy,” they don’t elect guys who promise to make the job of their administration pissing off as may people as possible.

I will admit that I am no “fan” or even any great admirer of Biden. But I supported and voted for him because I found him the better candidate, who, unlike his opponent, is qualified, experienced and mentally stable.

checking in over at newsmax to see what the latest RW talking points are, at I guess it is the Kamala vapors:

Vice President Harris Raises Eyebrows as She Fields Presidential Calls With World Leaders

If you suspected Joe Biden was merely a transitional president, you might be inclined to see proof in the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris has taken on what’s traditionally a presidential duty: phone calls with foreign leaders.

As I recall, it was Dick Cheney who ran the damn country while Dubya paraded up and down flight decks in his pilot suit, but, well…we know why this could be perceived as eyebrow-raising by some.

BTW, extreme cold hit Texas in 2011 with a similar but smaller scale result, so this failure is a result of failing to act on known shortcomings coming out of 2011.

If you click through here you can get to the FERC report on the 2011 SW and ERCOT blackouts.

Page 144 has a table which I think shows that 2 GW of wind was lost because of low temperature limits and blade icing.

Arstechnica: About 20.8 GW went down for other reasons, like freezes affecting sensing lines. I think that’s basically all coal/gas/nuke. JK Spruce Unit 2 took almost 800 MW of coal generation down with it for example.

Couldn’t figure out why my cat was being extra clingy last night, insisting on coming up and sleeping next to me. I realized that even with the space heater blowing on me, her usual spot at the bottom of the bed is more exposed to the draft from the next room (which is present because I have to leave the door slightly open so she can go use the facilities, or have a snack out of the food bowl, but that is another story!). It was just a little over 60, which is almost as cold as it gets in here, over another apartment. apparently my girl is fine down to around 63, but when it gets to 60, suddenly I’m necessary waste heat for her to take advantage of!

A buddy of mine from Dallas was down on Galveston island winterizing his vacation home when the cold wave struck, he wrote to say that it was 40 degrees in the house and they were huddling under blankets to keep warm.

He is a native of Phoenix. But his wife is from Moscow, so at least she should be used to it.

Morning Lizardim from the wild north country as we scoot out from under the thumb of the polar vortex. Current air temperature is -6 degrees F (-21.1 degrees C), but by Monday of next week, we will be above freezing and I’ll be out in the driveway doing maintenance on fishmobiles, since all of them are yelling obnoxiously at me that it’s time to change the oil. Yes, I knew that already, but I’m not going to do it when the air temperature isn’t going to break 0 degrees F for three straight days. How go things among the lizardfolk? Are the Texans in the house doing okay? I feel particularly badly for them, since ERCOT has had multiple chances to spend the money for freezing-weather upgrades on their equipment, and they’d rather blame the libs.

Texas is still suffering through massive blackouts due to the cold weather. Right wing politicians love calling out California when they had their blackouts last summer, but are now engaging in cognitive dissonance as their state freezes.

What are the differences?

California strained under demand and wildfires and hot weather stressed the system to the breaking point. State put rolling blackouts in place to keep system afloat.

Texas? They prioritized penny pinching and not spending anything on winterization despite fact that state periodically experiences winter. So when really cold and snowy weather hit, they had massive blackouts as 40% of the state’s oil/gas/coal plants went offline. Right wing lunatics pointed to wind power as the problem, but wind power actually outperformed other types as less wind power went offline and more wind power capacity was restored faster than the oil/gas/coal plants did.

The state blacked out because of the lack of proper oversight, prioritizing profit over production during a cold snap, and inadequate ability to import electricity from neighboring grid.

It had nothing to do with a Green New Deal (which isn’t a law but aspirational). It had nothing to do with wind power turbines freezing up (which makes for a great visual if you’re a right winger) because watching a coal plant not producing power is just a picture of a coal plant. It just isn’t dramatic.

Weird. The GOPers in Texas were quick to bash Puerto Rico after the island was absolutely wrecked by Hurricane Maria and the power grid was absolutely destroyed.

Yet they’re mostly silent on the blackouts except to demand power producers get the lights back on (which was due to their penny pinching and refusal to winterize for the periodic event known as winter).

My granddad (or the guys on Ellis Island) changed the spelling of the family name, replacing the cz in the original with a ch, like in “church”

Problem came when I returned to Germany where the ch has a guttural pronounciation (like Channukah). I am used to just spelling it out as Germans never get it right.

I even recall a woman saying “How do you expect me to spell it when you don’t pronounce it correctly?”

Gisela, Arizona was named after the heroine in the book Countess Gisela by E. Marlitt. The town schoolteacher was reading the book to her students when she was asked by her husband, the postmaster, to help name the little settlement.

She asked the school children what names they liked, and they voted to name their new town Gisela. (Which Germans would pronounce as GEE-ze-la)

The students didn’t know how to pronounce the name correctly, so they called it Guy-SEE-la.

I have a heated pad for my cat. It heats to about 90 degrees and is only turned on by the weight of the cat. I also have ‘purr pad’s for the cat, which reflect her heat back at her. Of course right now she is laying on a purr pad which is set on a box while an electric space heater blows hot air at her.

Worked in D.C. for a few years with a mix of western PA people and people not from there in the late 1980s.

Were eating one night as a group in a place in Georgetown that had a very broad beer list, a huge display of beer cans*, and at the time was pretty much the place to find “not from here” beers for sale.

One of the non-Pennsylvanians had never had an Iron City. But they currently did not have any Iron City on stock. So someone ordered an Olde Frothingslosh, opened it, sniffed it, said “Iron City Light”, and gave it to the guy to drink.

* - Their display included a lot of various Iron City promotional cans since they did runs with pictures of the current Pirate, Penguin, or Steeler team on them.

Edit: Was the “Brickskeller” in Dupont Circle. Appears to have closed in 2010 or so. Reputation for mediocre pub food, awful service, but a large beer selection.

We’d be in a little bit of trouble food-wise in an extended power outage, because we don’t have a lot of ready-to-eat stuff. Water is a no-brainer with a massive gravity feed through the entire town; the water tower is built at the highest point in the town, which is a pretty significant boost for most houses, including mine. I do have two hand-operated can openers, and a fairly wide array of Swiss army knives that I keep on my person or in a few known locations. Flashlights used to be a problem - specifically, keeping batteries in them - but now we have cell phones and multiple ways to recharge them.

Some context…

These folks are from the part of the prepping community that simply wants to ensure that their household is able to function in the event of an emergency. I particularly find them useful because they actually try most of what they put into videos and report fairly honestly.

Many are from the Mormon community where it is also church doctrine. The term “Provident’ is often an identity buzzword used within that community.

I am not a member of the Mormon religion. However, I have found the prepping information coming from their community extremely useful.

Here in Czech Republic, we’ve apparently entered the “good luck, folks - you’re on your own” phase of pandemic mitigation as it increasingly seems increasingly the hapless and inept Czech government, headed by its hapless and inept Prime Minister, no longer knows what to do. Political paralysis and gridlock are the order of the day as the PM’s government no longer has a functioning majority in the Parliament. And on Monday, the Constitutional Court here is very likely to rule that closing retail establishments is, in fact, illegal under the Czech Constitution…even in a state of emergency. Speaking of states of emergency, the current one expires on the 28th and, because there is no majority consensus to renew it, that’s the end of that.

So, as they say, interesting times.

The discussion on Limbaugh’s demise reminds me of this story:

(Referring to the death of Wendell Phillips who died in Boston on February 2, 1884.)

Boston Post.—The Hon. E. R. Hoar did not love Phillips over much in his later years. It is now reported of him that while the remains of the great agitator were awaiting the final ceremonies a distinguished Cambridge gentleman asked him if he was going to attend Wendell Phillips’s funeral. “No,” was the reply, “but I approve it!”

In many ways, all roads lead to Dead Fuck Rush for why we are a hyperpolarized country. Dead Fuck Rush was one of the modern origins of political hate speech which in-turn helped launch 100s (1000s?) of like-minded am hate radio mongers which over-time expanded to FM, satellite radio, fox, podcasts, the interwebs, and beyond. Adios, Dead Fuck Rush. Adios.

On the bright side, he lived just long enough to see Biden elected POTUS, Harris elected as VPOTUS and see the GOP lose the House and Senate.

I have done enough work in Purgatory for the sins of my right-wing past, but it’s important to share your experiences as inspiration to others to not go down the same road as you. I listened to that bastard every day from 1992 to probably 2002. It polluted my mind with nothing but sound bites about how bad the liberals were. There was not one second dedicated to actual policy. Ever. He had his moments where I did laugh out loud, I admit it. His Sen. Bob Torricelli updates with the Sopranos theme playing in the background was pretty damn funny. I’ll give him that. After Obama got elected, it was full metal straight to the depths of hell. In 2006, with the Iraq War/Afghanistan in total disarray, I started waking up. In 2010, my transformation was complete. I would tune in occasionally to spy, and he clearly had lost his fastball. He would leave hangers over the plate all the time; stuff that a quick Google search would prove to be flat out wrong. He was boring. Repetitive. Redundant. Now, he’s just another dead fat fuck.

If I ever think of Limbaugh, it will always be how my ‘independent’ friend started listening to him in the late 80’s, when we were late teens/early 20s. At first he and his buddy liked listening to the jolly fat man who made hippies cry. By the time my buddy was in his late 20’s/early 30’s, politically he was Archie Bunker.

Today, my friend swears he rarely listened to Limbaugh, although he still religiously listens to the Philly right wing station that carried him.

I get that people change as they get older, and this guy probably would have swing right regardless. But knowing that he was willingly digesting all of the garbage that Limbaugh was spewing always bums me out to a degree.
