My first encounter with Rush was late one night when I couldn’t sleep and turning on the tv to see that his show was on. The wall behind him was just covered with his books and the guys in the audience—the dittoheads—were just that, chuckling fools. He had a segment on endangered species where one of his assistants went out on the street and asked people if they had ever heard of the species, and because nobody had ever heard of any of them, he “proved” that there was no point in protecting them. That was his logic and schtick for over three decades. I never watched again and only heard him on the radio because he was on every other radio station in south central Indiana when I had a two-hour round-trip commute.

Yeah, but let’s pause to consider that it’s not “Texans,” it’s “enough Texans once you factor in that probably the people being hurt the worse are people that Republicans have already discarded, plus whatever vote restriction fuckery is in place and will be supplemented next election cycle.”

I guess my point is that we shouldn’t write off states. There was a time when my state was sending a guy to Washington who kept a hangman’s noose paperweight on his desk. We’re about to abolish the death penalty. That asshole set the ball in motion, validating and riling conservatives worldwide to be even more hateful and stupid than they already were. Along with Fox News, I feel he did more to encourage the downfall of this nation than any other single person or media outlet. And for that, I loathed the motherfucker, just as I’ve loathed seeing the effect of Fox News, and now OAN and Newsmax had on people I used to think were smart or normal. Yep yet somehow he got priority on Armed Forces radio. He was a bigoted asshole who famously mocked a 13 year old girl as the White House dog. If Never Trumpers on the right really want to know why Trump became palatable to their base, they need to find out why Rush became so popular in the 90’s. You don’t get Trump without Rush. Trump in many ways became more Rush than Rush did since social media attracts more people than radio did.

It’s a thing I say a lot and in multiple variations, but Rush is another one of those flashing indicators that what Republicans say they believe, and say they want for society, is not what they actually they believe and want…but the former subtly indicates the latter, once you understand the pattern.

The pattern is that they want harsh social structures that creates vulnerable people that can then be used…cheaper and with less chance of consequences…and disposes of vulnerable people with no utility to them. And they like this because their only real belief is that they’re the top of the hierarchy and people at the top can’t be immoral or incorrect.

And…yeah, the place this One Rule is most graphically illustrated is sex and bodies. These people really, really like having a system where they have access to the bodies of others and can compel consent or ignore consent, and thus they really, really like how sexual stigma creates a demimonde of the vulnerable people to be consumed.

That attribution has been nagging at me for a while now, so I finally got around to looking it up:

I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.” That quote, attributed to Mark Twain, popped up in a lot of places yesterday, as some people found themselves struggling with their feelings after the death of Osama bin Laden. If you’re against killing on principle, but still no great fan of bin Laden, the Twain quote might have seemed perfectly suited to the occasion.

Just one problem: Twain never said it. In fact, no one ever said it in precisely that form. Matt Blum at Wired has the fact-check: the quotation actually comes from Clarence Darrow, the lawyer of Scopes Trial fame. Here’s a fuller version of the quote, which appears in Darrow’s 1932 work The Story of My Life:

All men have an emotion to kill; when they strongly dislike some one they involuntarily wish he was dead. I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction.

From The Atlantic.

I find myself linking Rush to the fiasco in Texas. Before Rush, it was possible to get good working Government on both sides of the aisle regardless of which party ran things. Why? because pre-Rush, there was the idea of qualifications and knowledge. There was the idea of results helping with elections. But those folks were run out of the Republican Party in favor of angry talk show hosts who knew nothing and exalted the idea of not knowing anything and doing anything to a tenet of conservatism.

This Lawsuit Could Rip the Covers Off the Eternal Grift That Is Conservative Politics in America
A donor now wants his money back, because he threw it down one of the oldest ratholes in American politics.
Charlie Pierce

If you can get to this, it is worth it to read for the fun of it.

Ah, True the Vote. We remember those little scamps. They were born back in the day when the Republicans were doing all those things for which we excoriate Trumps, but without Donald Trump. TTV was born out of the ongoing voter-suppression efforts that had become essential to Republican politics, and which remain so to this day. It came to prominence by promoting spurious “voter fraud” charges in the 2012 elections. It was the brainchild of a woman named Catherine Engelbrecht, and it was central not only to the thriving “voter fraud” fantasy, but also to the so-called IRS “targeting scandal,” in which the Obama administration was accused of singling out conservative groups for the tax man’s special attention. This scam was highly effective at feeding politically useful—and very lucrative—conspiracy theories on which the Republican Party was all-in throughout the Obama Administration. Did it start with Trump? Please to be pulling the other leg now.

So Mr. Eshelman now wants his money back, because he threw it down one of the oldest established permanent floating ratholes in American politics.

Actually, I shouldn’t say that. The funny part, to them, was the liberals’ outraged reactions, not necessarily anything Rush said himself. They just liked laughing at people getting mad about what he said, thinking that he was “getting under their skin,” not realizing or caring that he was basically desensitizing them to massive racism and sexism.

Barbara Bush (not a big fan of hers) put a quick stop to that.

Then the Bush family got tired of Rush criticizing Pres GHW, and invited Rush to spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom.

Rush subsequently did a 180 (he did a whole show on spending the night at the White House) and became GHW’s vocal media fan.

This was before Rush started pronouncing schedule as shed-dule.

As for Limbaugh I remember seeing Franken’s Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot on a bookshelf when I was 13 and I was vaguely familiar with Al due to SNL reruns. Picked it up. Thought Jesus this guy is an asshole. And he just got more pathetic. You don’t get the likes of Breitbart, Ben Shapiro, Steve Bannon, & Trump without Rush who contributed nothing but hate to the dialogue when he wasn’t blowing smoke up right wingers’ asses about their ideological wisdom.

That book was part of the curriculum in my analysis of propaganda class in college in the mid 90s. First time I really became aware of the guy.

The privilege of being a white insurrectionist - attacking cops repeatedly and walking away without so much as even getting cuffed.

That probably has a lot more to do with the immediate imbalance in numbers. If there had been enough cops there, and they had a “municipal” attitude, they probably would have taken the time to beat the shit out of him.

Rush Limbaugh was a controlled-opposition gatekeeper who shilled the Starr Report and kept Clinton narratives on “safe” subjects (like Lewinsky). Like Alex Jones after him, he “took the ticket”. His job was to keep a generation of conservatives corralled and voting for neocon Bushes.

He also liked to fly to Caribbean islands with rich buddies to sleep with underage girls. (Remind you of anyone?) His third wife divorced him after that particular trip. —And why was he diddling Daryn Kagan (the CNN anchor with a boy’s name and vaguely tranny appearance)?

The Cabal is bigger than you know, and most of you are still in its loving arms without realizing it.

Ummm, I listened to Rush a few times in the very early 90s because we lived in a very conservative area and I wanted to know what the big deal was with him. Boring. Repetitive. When his book came out I was a volunteer at the local library (‘cause conservatives don’t like to pay people to work at the branch libraries apparently.) Anyway, everyone was reserving the book so when it came through on a slow evening, I skimmed it. Virtually everything in it had already been discussed on the few times I’d listened to the show.
I recall one reasonably clever and original topic he came up with and would have given him points except that he repeated it at least twice more. I haven’t listened to him since about 1992 and haven’t missed him.

To be fair, no matter how much King hated it in the end, the Kubrick version will always be the one people remember.

It felt to me like King wasn’t understanding that a film is a separate, free-standing work of art, no matter what it is based on. I can kind of understand that, since it was his book, but Kubrick created a masterpiece. If I recall correctly, the film adaptations of his books that he did have a big hand in were not quite as master-piece-y. Not really his oeuvre.

And now are facing water restrictions/cut-offs? Both of these conditions slated to last days or even weeks longer as the state regulators are twiddling their thumbs while the power companies dick around. With the promise of higher energy costs approved by said regulators so the power companies don’t lose money on higher natural gas prices.”

To be fair, many well known authors have had to deal with shitty film adaptations of their books here and there.

King is one of those artists whose best works seem to have been conceived and written when he was either A) a starving artist, B) when he was on drugs, or C) both. IIRC, even he’s admitted that his writing style changed once he sobered up and started focusing on raising a family than his work.

One of the things we’ve seen time and again is men with negative reputations trying, upon learning that they’re on the verge of death, making some attempt at redemption even if it’s little more than giving half-assed apologies for what they view as the sources of said reputation.

All Rush did was dig in deeper. He never sought redemption, he was pretty clearly happy with the reputation he’d created around himself.

I personally know two people who sold their rights to film production.

One friend I had to explain that once he sold his rights, without reservation, they could anything they wanted to do with his character.

Subsequently a TV movie was broadcast, and then a feature film version was released and his character did all right. But it must be noted that different liberties were taken with each treatment.

Another friend who had been pushing for years to develop a movie about one of his R&B artists finally got a script green lighted and written by one of the better paid Hollywood script writers.

He killed the project because to create drama, his father was portrayed in the script as an avowed racist.

It’s Hollywood.
