LYRICS:
You pick me up with a smile for my weakness
I’m bittersweet but you care about me
You found me lost in the chaos and confusion
You said it’s possible that we can be free
You take my hand and then you sweep me off my feet

Oh let me move you
Come to the island
Where we can save our souls
It’s just the right size (for me)
The world is beyond us
It’s too enormous
But oh the island is just right
It’s the perfect size

You pick me up, with the promise of love
Our names on the door at the island of real
You have a way of being gentle and tough
In every sense I think you know how I feel
Cos I’m afraid of things I don’t understand
And now I need a little hope

Oh Let me move you
(the cities covered in smoke)
Come to the island
(the whole systems broke)
Where we can save our souls
It’s just the right size (for me)
The world is beyond us
(let’s not get into a fight)
It’s too enormous
(Irene Goodnight)
But oh the island is just right
It’s the perfect size
Just right
It’s the perfect size (for me)

The world is beyond us
(Shit just got real)
It’s too enormous
(Fell under the wheel)
But oh the island is just right
It’s the perfect size for me

I usually try to be gracious when someone dies, whatever that’s worth. But there are some people I don’t believe deserve that, and Limbaugh’s one. He was an absolute monster, one of the ugliest populist demagogues in US history, and his legacy is nothing but hatred and division. I’ll afford him the same sympathy he showed to so many others: i.e. none.

I won’t say I’m glad he’s gone, but the world is better without him.

Soon after I moved to the US I worked at a job where my direct supervisor, who worked in the same lab and room, listened to Rush, followed by Neal Boortz, followed by Glenn Beck, all day every day. It was an introduction to US politics that was quite eye-opening, and it was during that time that I then started lurking at Redstate and here. The years since have been educational, as the US right has started being more and more open about their cruelty and fascism, and more and more invested in conspiratorial nonsense.

It wasn’t always a torture to listen to these charlatans all day every day, because that’s what they do - their skill isn’t just fomenting hatred, but doing it in a way that makes it seem somehow appropriate, as long as you might consider yourself part of the in-group. But even though I was just an observer who disagreed more often than most, I still caught a mild case of the disease, in that I found myself angry most days, for reasons that were never clear. Because in the end, that’s how the path to radicalisation works - make people angry, all the time, and make them addicted to that anger and hate.

I will say I’m glad he’s gone. Fascism is a serious threat to US democracy, in no small part due to Limbaugh.

What a day that was!

What a Day That Was (Live) (Edit)

I woke up to about seven inches of snow on my car in Ridgway, CO. I watched Trump Plaza in Atlantic City crumble to the ground before I got in my car for the one hour drive to Telluride.

I found free parking right next to the chairlift. There was about a half a foot of snow on the fresh groomed trails, made for a great warmup. The snow was consistently knee deep, it was waist deep in some parts, especially the steep double black terrain off the shoulder of Palmyra Peak, and the sun came out for a bit! Best day on skis this winter by far. At lunch time I found out Rush Limbaugh died. It was a good day.

Me riding up the Gold Hill chair.

Looking down lower Gold Hill Chute 2, below the Goat Path.

Some pictures of the scenery on my Instagram.

Back home now, I’m exhausted.

The only way the USPS is going to get back on track is if Biden gets the Trumpists on the Board of Governors replaced and they send DeJoy packing by parcel post.

There’s no other way to deal with this. DeJoy purposefully fucked up the post office to muck about their election ballot capacity, but it also fucked up their ability to deliver mail - everything from Social Security checks to bills and last-mile packages for other delivery services.

That’s one of Trump’s legacies - wrecking the post office.

Yes, and it looks like Biden is getting set to do that. I don’t think he can fire DeJoy directly, that’s controlled by the board.

Cascading failure: When a critical component fails, then other things which were either dependent on, or redundant by, that critical component become overloaded, causing them to fail. The existence of a cascading failure in a system is regarded as a fundamental design flaw. There are entire college courses devoted to analysis and avoidance of cascading failure.

People are very poor at thinking about things as system. They barely can comprehend single cause, single effect.

Amping it up to systems that rely on multiple components that have multiple inputs is beyond too many folks.

53
lawhawk  Feb 17, 2021 • 6:08:05pm

Texas blackouts are not just blackouts. They’re a loss of water and critical infrastructure. It’s the loss of power to supermarkets and distribution chain throughout the state.

All because the utilities didn’t winterize because the “regulator” doesn’t require them to winterize.

Oh, and the regulators themselves don’t live in Texas so they don’t feel any of the effects of the outages personally and directly.

With the death of Rush Limbaugh I have been reflecting upon some of his moronic fans who used to post right here on LGF when I first arrived in 2009. In addition to being philosophically warped, they were also invariably gullible. Whenever the topic of El Rushbo came up, it was always pointed out that Rush earned the right to be “controversial” because he owns his own network…the EIB network!

Heard on MN Public Radio that some of the people in charge of distributing the vaccines made a bee line for prisons and universities with the vaccines that would have gone bad. I don’t know the percentages. They picked places that had a large population in a small area (walking distance) and medical staff available.

Wind power is a huge boon to jobs, manufacturing, and clean power generation. Central US is an ideal location for wind power generation due to constant winds and terrain.

If US had better transmission grid, that power would help reduce energy burdens across the nation, not just locally.

Cascading failure is real now. The best thing that can be done at this point is full mobilization of the National Guard nationwide to somehow pull people out of the effected areas. Nothing is going to be repaired any time soon. Especially in Texas. This is so fucked up.

“Wheels,” LOL. Fucking hypocrite is still getting paid THIS VERY DAY for the accident he was victim to like thirty years ago, but he wants to limit the plebes right to sue for whatever they can get like he did.

re: #27 Charles Johnson

I get a box of clothes to try on every other month. I can try them on and buy them, or not. Up until the middle of last year, I’d get an email that the box had shipped and then three days later, the box would show up. Just like clockwork. This time around, I got an email on February 5 and the box showed up…yesterday (February 16). This reminds me, the box is on the floorboard of my car (along with a lot of other junk), as I’d picked it up when I went to do a quick grocery run this morning right before work.

I grew up in the frigid north, and burst pipes were always a problem in winter. Hated that.

60’s memories…late summer gas wars when gasoline prices fell to rock bottom levels…fill up your gas tank and you would get a premium—toys, towels, 100 Green Stamps…

What do you want to bet the insurance companies will refuse to pay using the “Act of G-D” or some other bullshit exemption.

They’ll simply deny the claims due to supposed negligence. (“Shoulda knooowd!”)

Insurance racketeers always maximize their profits and what better way to do that than deny claims?

Out of the list, I have eaten every item on it at least once. With the exception of liver, which I actively dislike, at some time during the last month, I’ve had all of them but escargot, and that’s only because the only decent French restaurant in the area doesn’t serve it on their takeout menu. Honestly, the list of items I won’t eat is pretty danged short.

I hope this is true, but I don’t know if it’s being reported by credible sources.
