Just reading through today’s letters column of the Omaha World-Herald, you can see the fighting between Republican voters over Senators Fischer (who voted to acquit Trump) and Sasse (who voted to convict).

Each camp thinks the other is wrong, several call Sasse a traitor to his party (because that’s what impeachment is about, the party not the evidence), several lambaste Fischer for her position.

Being conservatives, every one of them misspells Sen. Fischer’s name (leaving out the “c”).

It is my most fervent hope the next time I am tried for a felony, that Sen. Fischer, Ernst and Grassley are on my jury.

Without watching it, and knowing what I know about Mr. Prager, I assume the thrust of his video is “God is a libertarian, and Ayn Rand sits at the right hand of God.” (Move over, Jesus.)

From the last thread regarding the lack of hand sanitizer and sanitizer cloths.

I cannot speak of Western Nebraska, but here in the Washington DC area, lots of hand sanitizers are becoming available in retail outlets like grocery stores, including name brands such as purell. As are 70% alcohol and sanitizing cloth packages.

It might be available via mail order.

I do not know much about Post Office regulations in general, but it is my understanding that a lot of long distance through-hikers (think hiking the Appalachian or Pacific Crest Trails) will send packages of supplies for themselves to post offices along the way before they begin their hikes. The post office apparently will hold the packages for the hikers. Who then pick aforementioned packages up as they reach that post office.

The only other things I can think of are renting a box at a post office or seeing if Amazon or USPS has a box system somewhere that you might pass by on occasion.

Best wishes on however you handle things.

One summer afternoon years ago, a woman I was dating, showed up for our afternoon outside concert date with several of her female friends and some children.

Apparently the mother of the children and friend of all the ladies had managed to sit down on a Brown Recluse spider. Which objected by biting her in the butt.

The mom ended up at the hospital for a while under observation. She did heal up, I am told, fine.

We were camping in the Santa Rita mountains south of Tucson and I woke up with a dead scorpion in my sleeping bag, I must have rolled over and crushed him before he could get to me.

That is the last time I have ever slept out under the stars.

I know scorpions are not necessarily deadly, but it was an eight-mile hike to our car and another 30 miles to the nearest clinic…

I just heard back from a buddy who lives in Dallas, he had driven down with his family to Galveston Island to winterize their vacation home just in time for the cold snap to hit.

He wrote back to say that he is safe and sound. I re-post his mail here:

“Last Saturday I made the trip to Galveston’s Home Despot to buy split foam tubing to insulate outside pipes. No such luck, all sold out, so I bought my second choice, aluminized-mylar-coated bubble wrap insulation.
I secured the pipes and all was well, then on Sunday we lost power. With the outside temp at 25 and the inside at 45 it was time to cut the extra aluminum wrap into 6 ft. lengths and tape them together with the extra aluminum tape to make emergency blankets.
Mylar easily slides off a bed, so we binder clipped the improvised blankets to existing ones. Eventually the inside temperature fell to 29 degrees downstairs and 33 upstairs, but the improvised blankets saved our bacon - we weren’t comfortable, but were warm enough. When power returned late Tuesday we fueled the car - a good thing as power soon went out again and gas pumps stopped functioning.
On Wednesday as it warmed to 35 degrees we noticed that one of the outside pipes had burst, thus we needed to shut off the water. With no running water but a full tank of gas we decided to return to Dallas.
The road back was icy, and the trip took eight hours, but we made it.
Two projects have been on my bucket list - energy and water self-sufficiency. After this experience both projects will be expedited.”

Yup, playing amongst the wildlife is not always a good idea.

Although I remember being on maneuvers when some nearby Special Forces encountered a Timber Rattler. Caught and cooked it. They did share a taste of it to all comers.

And a co-worker who had his Ranger tab talked about how an M-16 blank, if done right will put down a nice sized alligator for supplementary rations, during the Florida phase, when the trainers aren’t looking.

I had quite a shock recently when a mainstream US think-tanker described the UK in the same camp as Poland and Hungary as having been taken over in part by populist nationalism. Of course the UK government would deny this, but do they care that this is being suggested?

After watching several cold weather disaster videos, I wonder how many Texans have no idea where the master valve for their water supply is located. This question probably applies to just about anywhere in the US.

I do know where mine is located but, unfortunately, it’s located in the crawl space under the house. Not a very easy place to get to in an emergency.

Sorry to hear that your friends had to endure the collapse of parts of Texas infra-structure.

Good on them to look at their options.

When Trump looked like he might win in 2016, I started looking at disaster preperation’ as I knew that he tended to destroy functioning organizations and systems. (Look at his bankruptcies and failed businesses. Many of which could have prospered if run by someone other than a sociopathic, narccistic, cruel, immature idiot.)

What I learned was that it is very important to define exactly what one is prepping for and for how long.

In my humble opinion prepping for the end of the world, the zombie invasion, or the end of civilization is not likely to be very productive. Particularly since, at age 67, I do not think I would be particularly interested in spending much time in such a dystopia.

But yes, there are those who apparently are planning to load their gun collection on a wheelbarrow. Strap their pallets of ammunition on their back. Then forge into the wilderness of suburbia. Where they plan to live like Daniel Boone by hunting cheetos, I guess.

In my case I decided on a worst case scenario of perhaps a 2 week period where several major infrastructure systems might temporarily fail, followed by a 3 month period where there would be shortages as the systems are brought back online. My goal would be to keep the household functioning at some level of comfort. I also decided that attempting to fully duplicate critical infrastructure did not make much sense for me.

Others might need to prep for a hurricane, an earthquake or a forest fire.

Probably the most important thing is to get mentally comfortable with the idea that one might have to face a problem and that one can handle it. We are a materially rich society. Far better off than our ancestors who often lived day-to-day what we would view as roughing it. As long as we do not panic, we have a quite good chance of surviving.

I have found this book to be one of the better overviews of issues and ideas:

I agree with you, know how, when and why, to turn off utilities is extremely important.

As you point out, knowing how, when and why to turn off water, say to prevent burst pipes is important. And it helps to know how to drain the house water system after the water is turned off. As are knowing how and when to turn off electricity and natural gas.

The one I have not yet figured out, though, is how to turn off the sewage. Many sewage systems have pumps and grinders in the pipes. These rely on electricity. If the power fails, they can back up.

When my pipes burst several years ago when we were in Sacramento, when we got home we had to shut off the water meter.

Since that time we had a master shut-off valve installed in the inlet line; it is right by the entrance to the cyclone cellar.

Arizona has the issue of the issue of the caliche, or hardpan layer that is hard as cement and often makes it difficult or prohibitively expensive to lay pipes deeper than a foot or so down.

There are actually prepper/survivalist discussions on fortifications and squad level tactics to prevent human wave assaults on their bugout locations.

In one case, where I pointed out that they didn’t own a bugout location, the response was that they would just take one at gunpoint.

As far as I can tell, a lot of it stemmed from the writings of a guy who claimed to have lived in Bosnia during the Yugoslavian Civil War. They all seemed to have missed the part where the guy wrote that small homeowner groups had absolutely no chance of standing up to armed and organized gangs and militias.

I think that the rest involves trying to find a reason for owning their gun collection. Usually by invoking fear of ‘The Other’.

Part of my family were farmers in Northwest Missouri during and after the Civil War. (Their farm is about where the St. Joseph, Mo. Mall stands.) This is Quantrill and Jesse James Territory. (My family fought for the Union.) This area was so active with Confederate guerillas during the Civil War that the Union Army went through it and burned down the farms of the Confederate sympathizing families.

There is a family story about how one day in the 1890’s a gang of men rode onto the family farm and took all the chickens. And that the family was quite relieved. The gang did not bother the family members or take or damage anything critical to the survival of the family. It was noted that there was no telephone to call for the cops. Nor were there any cops to call anyway.

Here in SE Alaska we are south of the permafrost line. We do have to bury the water lines a little deeper as the frost line will penetrate deeper into the ground.

Most city codes do not permit shut off values in sewer lines so I wouldn’t worry about finding one. When we lived in Laramie WY a friends house had the city sewer line get plugged up and force raw sewage into their fully furnished basement. A full 4 foot deep swimming pool of poo. The resulting lawsuit required to city to pay the over $40,000 repair bill.

Many sewage systems have pumps and grinders in the pipes. These rely on electricity. If the power fails, they can back up.

The bill will come due for this cold snap — literally.

Customers of Lincoln Electric System and Black Hills Energy are likely to see higher bills for February, but exactly how much higher is unclear.

The extremely cold weather that has engulfed much of the United States over the past week has led to soaring energy costs.

On Friday, spot natural gas prices soared to hundreds of dollars per million British thermal units, a huge spike for prices that are normally less than $10.

Electricity prices soared as high as $9,000 per megawatt hour in Texas on Tuesday, according to news reports.

Under Nebraska law, Black Hills is allowed to pass on the actual cost of the natural gas it buys to customers.

That’s pretty interesting. Now I need to track down my mothers family genealogy. Which, having just looked at the ‘stuff’ in my storage room, is not going to likely succeed for a bit.

My mother’s side settled in western Missouri and Eastern Kansas as part of the Great German migration after 1848.

On the Eastern Kansas side there is a family named Younger. I think that they are descended from one of the set of Youngers who rode with the James Gang brothers. And who married into that side of my mother’s family. But I need to verify that with the genealogy.

The Youngers that I have met are really nice folks. One of the Youngers ended up getting her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, iirc, in Anthropology back in the 1980’s.

Separately, my grandfather reportedly met Frank James, who after release from prison used to hang around the St Joseph Courthouse.

The state government allows our gas company to charge based on what it pays. Fixed costs (the delivery system of pipes) is owned by the state. (There are numerous gas companies which supply gas here.) Our gas company also offers a fixed rate which is set each fall based on gas prices at that time. Until this year we’ve benefited from the variable rate.

The price of gas went up dramatically because production in Texas has dropped off dramatically due to the cold wave. Prices will go up everywhere as Texas gas production was knocked off-line,

In North Dakota in their shale formations, they have a lot of gas they simply flare off because there is no pipeline infrastructure to feed the gas to.

I heard this as a brief note on Wyoming Public Radio yesterday afternoon; my regional newspaper has more details.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Bob Dole, a former longtime senator and the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, announced Thursday that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

Dole, 97, said in a short statement that he was diagnosed recently and would begin treatment on Monday.

“While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own,” he said.

Jerry Moran, a Republican who holds the seat Dole once did, expressed sadness at the cancer diagnosis and offered his prayers. Freshman Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, who received Dole’s endorsement in running last year and described him as a mentor, said he’s not known “a man with a bigger heart.”

Retired four-term Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, a Republican, predicted that Dole would fight cancer “with his usual grit and determination.”

State-sanctioned “cancel culture”?

I noticed when we when to Krakow in 2016 that Polish TV was playing endless programs, films and documentaries on great Polish feats of arms from Napoleonic times to the wars with Soviet Russia, all stressing the heroic sacrifices of the Polish people.

They are taking a page from the post-Cold War playbook of fusing nationalism with religious identity to create a theocratic state.

WASHINGTON — President Jimmy Carter called for including women in the military draft more than 40 years ago. The Defense Department decades later agreed the change would improve military readiness and national security.
And a special commission set up by Congress to specifically study the issue came to a similar conclusion last year. Requiring women — not just men — to register when they turn 18, it said, would make it “possible to draw on the talent of a unified nation in a time of national emergency.”

Now the Supreme Court, in a case reminiscent of the lawsuits that brought fame to a feminist lawyer named Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is being asked to force the hand of a reticent Congress by declaring the male-only military draft unconstitutional.

“The registration requirement is one of the last sex-based classifications in federal law,” says a petition from the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents a group called the National Coalition for Men. “It imposes selective burdens on men, reinforces the notion that women are not full and equal citizens, and perpetuates stereotypes about men’s and women’s capabilities.”

The lead lawyer is Ria Tabacco Mar, director of the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project. It’s the position Ginsburg held as she filed now-landmark lawsuits challenging gender-discrimination laws, before Ginsburg became a judge and then the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

“The Ginsburg tie is multilayered,” Mar said. Ginsburg’s victories from the 1970s are cited throughout the suit. And it employs a favorite Ginsburg tactic: representing male plaintiffs to challenge a legal provision that treats the genders differently, and challenges long held assumptions that it says are made obsolete by changing times.

Last week, a group of retired military leaders from across the branches of service asked the Supreme Court to take up the case and declare that a male-only registration violates the constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.

“The vast majority of men … have no advantage in readiness over women, who the current statutory scheme forbid from registering,” said the brief filed by former National Security Agency director Michael Hayden and others.

For every eight people executed in the United States since the 1970s, one person has been wrongfully convicted and later exonerated, underscoring the risk of innocent people suffering the ultimate punishment, a death penalty research group said Thursday.

In a new report, the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) said its examination of every death sentence handed down since 1973 - more than 9,600 in all - revealed that 185 death row inmates had been exonerated after being wrongfully convicted, 11 more than previously known. There have been 1,532 executions in the United States since 1976.

I’m going to hit the rack, as I’ve been awake since 8am yesterday morning.

I was going to go to bed earlier, but my wife insisted on changing my dressing first. Blood had soaked to the outside in several places.

After she cut away the surgical dressings, it was then we found the package of stuff the VA sent home with me did not include replacement dressings. Additionally, my hand is still bleeding from the incision (it goes from the top joint of my index finger in a zig-zag down to my wrist.) It’s now wrapped in lots of gauze and an elastic bandage.

One of the things my church did, when we built out our new campus in the next town over, was install a shower, expressly for this purpose. Every year, we take in a few homeless families and give them a place to stay, get cleaned up, get home-cooked food, and support to get them back on their feet. The women, both younger than 45, wore bonnets, gloves and glasses to disguise themselves as older than 65, the age cutoff to be prioritized to get the coronavirus vaccine in Florida, according to Raul Pino, the director of the health department in Orange County, where Orlando is located. He attributed the deception to growing interest in the vaccine, giving the example of the women while explaining how high demand is in the area.

“This is the hottest commodity that is out there right now so we have to be very careful,” Pino said at a press briefing Thursday.

The geriatric guise is the latest instance of people trying to cut the line to get vaccinated from the deadly virus. Last month, authorities identified a wealthy Canadian couple who had posed as locals in a remote Indigenous community to take doses meant for elders. Meanwhile, an Indiana health department issued a warning earlier this month against what they called “a substantial lack of morality” after people had lied to vaccination site workers about their addresses, jobs and ages.

The Florida women’s costumes may have succeeded before — both had the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention card indicating they had received their first doses. Pino said he did not know how they could have been previously vaccinated, but on Wednesday, workers at the site at the Orange County Convention Center caught on.

Once the staff at the site noticed the discrepancy with their birthdays listed on their drivers’ licenses, the women, 44 and 34, were referred to deputies, who issued trespass warnings against them, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

The women, whom The Washington Post is not identifying because they have not been charged, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday evening.

They did not get their second shot, and security at the site was heightened in the wake of the incident, said Kent Donahue, a spokesman for the health department.

Pino said there has been a “few” cases of people trying to trick health workers into getting vaccinated, including a man who had the same name as his elderly father.

In North Dakota in their shale formations, they have a lot of gas they simply flare off because there is no pipeline infrastructure to feed the gas to.

It was about 20% of production that was flared in 2019 (eia.gov). Goal for 2020 was to get it under 10%, but that’s still a big number. At least it’s not more than half like it was a decade go.

There are US light pollution maps from a few years past where western ND is as brightly lit as NYC or LA.

Interesting questions. I’d probably say Lennon in the first (and maybe we would have seen some kind of Beatles reunion at some point), and Tupac in the second, even though I wasn’t a fan of Biggie or Tupac or Selena. My reasoning there is if Tupac isn’t gunned down, it’s likely Biggie wouldn’t either and the East-West coast feud wouldn’t have escalated as it did.

Maybe neither would have been as big a musical impact had they lived on as notoriety came posthumously, but I think they would have worked up a body of work far greater than what they managed while alive.

Because ERCOT got told by some of the evmnergy companies that they were going to shut down more plants if they didn’t get to pass on the increasing price of natural gas to their customers. I spent 10 years in Albany NY. We had some epic blizzards, but never lost power or water in any of those events.

For the rest of my life, I’ve been in the NYC metro area - either NYC proper or Northern NJ, and we’ve had some epic storms too - Blizzard of 1977 (no power loss) the 2003 blizzard (no power loss), or more recent storms, including Sandy. Luckily we didn’t lose power, and in those few events where power did fail, it was restored in under 24 hours. Many others saw power lost for far longer as the grid was disrupted - physically broken due to the storm as power distribution lines, substations were damaged/destroyed/flooded. That took much longer.

This Texas snowstorm didn’t destroy the distribution system. The failure was entirely at the point of generation. And then everything unbalanced because demand outstripped supply.

Four years after California’s disastrous experiment with energy deregulation, Enron energy traders can be heard - on audiotapes obtained by CBS News - gloating and praising each other as they helped bring on, and cash-in on, the Western power crisis.

“He just f—-s California,” says one Enron employee. “He steals money from California to the tune of about a million.”

“Will you rephrase that?” asks a second employee.

“OK, he, um, he arbitrages the California market to the tune of a million bucks or two a day,” replies the first.

The tapes, from Enron’s West Coast trading desk, also confirm what CBS reported years ago: that in secret deals with power producers, traders deliberately drove up prices by ordering power plants shut down.

“If you took down the steamer, how long would it take to get it back up?” an Enron worker is heard saying.

“Oh, it’s not something you want to just be turning on and off every hour. Let’s put it that way,” another says.

“Well, why don’t you just go ahead and shut her down.”

Yeah, shit can happen, anywhere. Bad shit that takes stuff out. But most states that are prepared can deal with some cold and snow, FFS. States that typically deal with cold and snow don’t automatically lose power countrywide because people turned their gd heat on! They still have running water. Their roads are kept clear. You can still buy gas and groceries. I know a lot of good ole boys that actually relish this kind of weather because they can play with their big 4WD trucks and snowmobiles.

But not Texas, nossir.

I know people in Texas, and some I’m really fond of. But this line of thinking that got them into this, which now they’re blameshifting (badly), is making me feel the same way about Texas as a state as I felt about Limbaugh. I’m almost at the DNR stage.

But they’ll get that federal money, no matter how I feel. And they’ll keep blathering about their independence and fucking over their own.

Yes, winter here is basically sporting season - snowmobiles, ice fishing, skiing/snowboarding. Hell, there are entire communities built on the lakes in the dead of winter, with their own plowed roads! The only time I had to fear for our safety in the winter was there at the end of January, when my furnace was out. And that was a regular maintenance failure, not due to my utilities providers being literally unable to meet the demand.

I spent 10 years in Albany NY. We had some epic blizzards, but never lost power or water in any of those events.

For the rest of my life, I’ve been in the NYC metro area - either NYC proper or Northern NJ, and we’ve had some epic storms too - Blizzard of 1977 (no power loss) the 2003 blizzard (no power loss), or more recent storms, including Sandy. Luckily we didn’t lose power, and in those few events where power did fail, it was restored in under 24 hours. Many others saw power lost for far longer as the grid was disrupted - physically broken due to the storm as power distribution lines, substations were damaged/destroyed/flooded. That took much longer.
