Recently I learned that different countries/groups understand the 🙏 emoji differently, so here’s a quick culturological poll: without looking up, what does it mean to you?

Last string re: recent Trump-driven attacks on Asian-Americans.
There is an especially virulent strain of anti-Asian racism in goober America, dating back to the 19th century. It has been in abeyance recently, like a dormant case of syphilis, but it doesn’t take much for it to break out in all its ugliness.
I’ve often thought that this would be a different and overall better country if not for the Chinese Exclusion Act, which wasn’t fully repealed until 1943.
A lot of people at the time thought so too. Cartoon from 1882 while the act was being debated.

A curious alliance of progressives, human rights activists and western business leaders fought tooth and nail against the Act the entire time of its existence, but they could not overcome the hatred and racism of the masses.

Have to say when I first saw that Ben Shapiro had a column, I feared that the NYTimes hired him but it dawned on me that it was their effort to find someone else to praise Limbaugh. Let’s be fair: anyone who praises Limbaugh is going to be a despicable human. Shapiro is not worse than other Limbaugh fans.

A 73-year old woman who had taken a High Court case against the HSE in relation to cervical smear tests has died.

Joan Lucey passed away in her family home in Dingle last night.

Her family have said they will continue with the High Court case as they ‘want to seek justice for their mother.’

The retired nurse, from Dingle in Co Kerry, had sued the HSE, Clinical Pathology Laboratories Incorporated with headquarters in Austin, Texas and MedLab Pathology Ltd with registered offices at Sandyford Business Park Dublin.

Ms Lucey’s High Court action centres on two cervical smear tests carried out in 2011 and the alleged misreading, misinterpretation or misreporting of those tests.

She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019. All claims have been denied.

Yup. The entire front paneling of the engine is gone. Looks like the fan let go - which is lucky for the passengers that it blew out away from them, instead of toward them. That ring would be inside the engine nacelle, directing air flow into the engine.

I guess - as with most Western Republicans, they think it’s a better approach to decry Haaland as a “radical”, rather than express the true cause of their opposition to her nomination, I.e. “She won’t be as likely to let our corporate cronies exploit public lands for profit - and campaign donations.”

I think you can distill even more than that: She’s not white.

I believe the federal government should be declaring Texas a disaster area and help in any way possible.

I also realize not everyone in Texas is a regressive conservative asswipe. There’s enough decent Texans in this group alone to prove that.

Still, I think about how Republicans in general, and southern Republicans in particular, fought tooth and nail to deny we in NJ (along with NY) every. Fucking. Penny of Hurricane Sandy relief. No one from up here did that to LA, TX, and MS when Katrina wiped the floor with their asses.

A lot of these motherfuckers were calling again to leave the fucking US two weeks ago. Yet as soon as a disaster of their own goddamned making happens, my tax dollars have to bail a portion of the country that doesn’t count me as a real American, because people aren’t strolling around my ShopRite with long guns strapped to their backs.

I’m also pissed off that this isn’t going to change the status quo in Texas. Republicans are absolutely responsible for this mess. I mean, Jesus Christ, Rick Perry is running around claiming his fellow Texans are literally willing to die for their fucked up energy grid.

Gah. Sorry, I’m still sore about Sandy relief and just pissed that doing the right thing means helping people who don’t like you.

I’m half waiting for people to start refusing AOC’s help when they found out their local food bank is feeding them from donations she raised.

Because of the extremely cold anomalous temps in Texas the usual crowd will bray their AGW denial, but of course Texas is not the world (no matter what Texans may think.)

Here is the GFS surface temp anomaly summary for part of the northern hemisphere, from the 17th through tomorrow. It’s a good animation to show how the atmosphere drags behind the rotation of the planet as a whole and how air masses move.

What is clear is that most of the northern hemisphere shown is experiencing significantly above normal temps, especially in the arctic:

I inherited a 1971 Plymouth Valiant that my grandfather bought for my brother in the early ’80s. My brother gave it to me in 1986 because someone had set it on fire outside his Phlly apt. and it had no heat, no radio, the speedometer didn’t work, you had to pump the brakes three times to get it to stop, and it stalled on left turns. I was thrilled. But I was no mechanic. So I drove it as it was. Oh, and the passenger side door didn’t open. I sold it to a college student for $100 right before I went to Japan to teach English in 1988. I’d like to see someone work on that car.

I have a 1979 Lincoln Continental in my garage downstairs. It belongs to Mrs. Fish. Her father drove it, having purchased it from a man in the Air Force at Eglin AFB in Florida. She was enamored with the big brown beast, and when he was done driving it, she asked him, “Daddy, could I have the big brown car one day when I get older?” He told her, “Sure, honey.” And true to his word, he kept it, wrapped in a tarp on his fence row, where I came along six years ago and repaired it to running condition. It still needs a little more work, but I am hopeful this spring that it will be fully operational again.

It’s big and it’s nice.

She’s a real class act. Smoothest ride I’ve ever had. Weighs in at nearly 5,000 lbs and a tick over 20’ long, but with barely 180 horsepower to her name thanks to the late 1970’s emissions equipment. If I wind up having to pull the engine this summer, that old workhorse is getting a bit of a makeover.

I think you can transport at least two corpses in the trunk of one of those.

Mrs. Fish’s previous daily driver was a 1997 Lincoln Town Car - the upscaled, air-suspension model of the Crown Vic. That thing literally would not die. We got rid of it with over 250k miles on the clock, after Mrs. Fish blew out the brake lines one summer afternoon. I know a guy who ran a taxi service who put 800k miles on an original power train until a spark plug literally ripped the threads out of the head and put a dent in the hood.

The Crown Vics and Town Cars ran the 283, but I believe it’s the same engine family (Modular V8). Police cars ran them because you could hold the throttle down and drive them at full power literally all day and never die. A sports car off the production line can do that for 10, 15 minutes, but it’ll eventually overheat and break down. A Crown Vic can do that for hours and not even break a sweat.

I messed up and corrected the post. The Windsor was in the Boss Mustang, but the Crown Vic/Town Car/Mercury Grand Marquis used the smallest package of the Modular V8, which is the famous workhorse of the 1990’s Ford lineup.

My folks got a used mid 1990s Crown Vic police interceptor that was formerly a cop car. That thing was an absolute beast on the road. Huge engine and tap the gas and you’re going 80.

It was fun to drive on the highway or straightaways.

But it had serious suspension issues (it tended to float w/zero road feel) and brakes never quite worked right. Mom loved driving it though. She had a lead foot, so you know how that goes…

My late grandfather had an early 1980’s Ford pickup. That truck is the one that died on my dad on his way home from one of my cousin’s wedding, which resulted in him buying the 1991 Chevrolet which would become my first vehicle - and my first accident, when it was destroyed in a rear-end collision with a fully loaded gravel truck. My grandmother, after he passed, picked up a Crown Victoria, and I remember it because of the distinctive whine that transmission made in first gear. Mrs. Fish’s Town Car made the same sound, and it brought back so many memories every single time.

The GOP just saw its life flashing before its eyes, so Fox News leaped into action (Daily Kos)

If the total breakdown of a state’s electrical power grid, plummeting millions of people without warning into subzero temperatures for several days, had occurred anywhere else but Texas, most media outlets, including Fox News, would have dutifully covered the story in accordance with their usual practice.

In other words, it would have been a major news item on Fox, but they wouldn’t have spent an inordinate amount of time on it, certainly not making it a subject for their opinion-based commentators to fixate on. As bad as the effects of the Texas storm were, neither winter storms nor power outages (even severe ones) really reflect that network’s bottom line, which is mainly amplifying political propaganda on behalf of the Republican Party.

However, as reported by Rob Savillo for Media Matters, Fox allotted an extraordinary degree of coverage to the Texas power outages last week. Nearly every instant of that coverage falsely blamed the power breakdown on renewable energy, the Green New Deal, or some other energy initiative notably associated with the Democratic Party.

When we were looking at replacement cars for my old Accord, I gave a look at the Chevy Impala, because we had one as a rental and it had horsepower, great interior room, and a super deep trunk, but by the time we got serious looking at cars, they redesigned the Impala and it didn’t feel nearly as comfortable or roomy in the trunk.

We ended up with an Outback - a car with a very particular set of skills. Our primary regret is we didn’t get the bigger engine. While the regular engine gets great gas mileage, it can huff and puff to get up to speed.

My family has been GM for generations. My dad’s dad had a 1972 Chevy, which my father purchased and has kept in meticulous repair. My dad’s mom had an Oldsmobile 88. Ever since that ‘91 Chevy saved my life and the lives of 4 other people in that massive wreck, I’ve been loyal to the brand. It has been well rewarded; my 2012 Chevy Malibu saved Mrs. Fish’s life when she flipped it end-over-end in a late night single-car wreck on a lonely country road.

Skylarks were DESIGNED to be huge. My fam bought a new one (station wagon) in the early 60s in Buffalo NY, brought it to Ohio when we moved to Greater Cincinnati and survived until at least 1970.

Best memory of the Skylark was an early 60s trip to Grand Island and on the way home a snake slithering out from under the dashboard. Lots of screaming from the parental units and cries of delight from the wee minions.

I don’t know what he did to the Cavalier before I got it. He was still driving at 88. (Years old, not mph. He rarely went over 40 mph in his later years.)

My mom had a Skylark and my dad had an oldsmobile delta 88 that we used to call the mobster mobile. I guess my parents had a thing for big cars.

I had never heard of it before this year, but the local general store carries it. It’s become a favorite.
