Echoing

Waking early in the morning
Waiting on the light of day
Whole new kind of feeling is on the way
I’m not scared of knowing
If we’re ever getting out
We could be here forever without a doubt

Time is always higher learning
I’m still barely making grades
Just about imagination anyway

We are circling the wagons
Lining up in single file
Members of the jury are standing trial

Waiting on a memory
Waiting on a memory

Said if you love me and you’re willing to dance
We could take it to the high seas
Echoing, echoing where do we stand

My heart’s hard of hearing
My head’s full of sand
Feet point both directions if you need a hand

Black water reflection
Lost in a city park
I can’t find my way through the dark

Waiting on a memory
Waiting on a memory

Said if you love me and you’re willing to dance
We could take it to the high seas
Echoing, echoing where do we stand
We’ll be sailing on a wild breeze
If you love me and you’re willing to dance
We could take it to the high seas
Echoing, echoing, echoing

Trump has become the eminence grise of the Republican Party:cnn.com

Those few Republicans who have not bent the knee are not the future of the party; unless Trump is utterly bankrupt and confined to prison, the fates that he deserves but probably will never endure, he will remain the face of the GOP party and its base. Let’s be real, the Texas disaster has nothing to do with Trump; it is the essence of Republican ideology. Except for his foreign policy and his bombastic persona, Trump differs little from the heart and soul of Republicans since Reagan.

I knew of fellows who would go out after a blizzard in their big Jeep with a winch and offer to pull people out of ditches…for $20.

If the person declined, they would drive on, circle back an hour later and offer again to pull them out…for $50.

The energy companies are the guys in the Jeep and Texas is the fellow stuck in a ditch.

“…It’s cold down on the bayou
They say it’s in your mind
But the moccasins are treadin’ ice
And leavin’ strange designs
Cajuns say the last time
That this happened they weren’t here
All Beaumont’s full of penguins
And I’m a-playin it by ear.”

Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo  Feb 21, 2021 • 12:07:10pm

A friend in Austin posted this on FB. I’ve had a minor interest in amateur radio all my life but never did much about it. It might be time to do something.

When All Else Fails…
Greetings from Texas, now beginning to thaw out. This is a HAM Radio antenna. When the power was out, our cell phones had no signal, and the Internet was down, I used this antenna attached to a 50-watt radio in my house and a 12v battery to communicate clearly and easily with other HAM radio operators who, like myself, are part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). We checked on each other, and shared reports about weather, electricity, water service, road conditions, and even which grocery stores were open. If someone needed help finding a warm place, water, food, had an emergency, or knew of neighbors that did, ARES would respond and assist in getting help where it needed to go. This information was also available to first responders, many of whom were also without power like the rest of us.
This is why I got my HAM radio license…to protect my family and serve my community, and I’ve never been more proud to be an amateur radio operator.
Getting an amateur (HAM) radio license is easy (you don’t have to be an electronics nerd) and you can get a setup like my radio and antenna for very little money. If you want to consider getting your license, go to arrl.org to learn more. That way, next time, you can protect yourself and look out for others, when all else fails.

Pleased to see a Republican Senator call for governmental regulation of the market. We’ve learned time and time again that industry in many cases is unable to regulate itself. Adam Smith’s failed invisible hand theory is exactly that, invisible

The Free Market can be a useful tool for balancing supply and demand, and for directing flows of capital to where they can be employed to their greatest benefit.

But it is far from ideal when it comes to managing resources and utilities.

Even Adam Smith stressed that markets have to work for everyone: producers and consumers, lenders and borrowers, employers and employees.

They don’t read him at all, they just cite the “invisible hand”.

Same people who would insist that “God helps those who help themselves” is a Bible quote.

The DOD never gave us records on the no-bid contract that Trump’s White House apparently pressured the DOD to award to 5G spectrum company Rivada Networks which just happened to be backed by Trump donors. So now we’re suing.

Now Adam Smith devoted a lot of his Wealth of Nations to attacking government-sponsored monopolies like the British East India Company.

A no-bid, secret cost-plus government contract is much the same thing.

I’ve had a Ham radio license for 27 years but have barely made use of it in any meaningful way beyond a period of time between 2010 and 2014 when I was part of a group of friends who got together to go on camping and desert exploration type trips and all had licenses themselves. We haven’t done any activities since then because life happens.

I’d like to do more myself. Not owning my own house limits what I can do somewhat. So far my main contribution to amateur radio has been getting my father into it. It’s become his primary hobby in retirement because he can’t really do the motorcycle thing as much as he’s like to anymore.

I’d like to do more myself. Not owning my own house limits what I can do somewhat. So far my main contribution to amateur radio has been getting my father into it. It’s become his primary hobby in retirement because he can’t really do the motorcycle thing as much as he’s like to anymore.

One of my office-mates at Ft. Rucker had served in Alaska, and was deep into field days and emergency HAM uses. We called his antenna-covered pickup “The Russian Trawler”.

The first of many such lawsuits I’m sure. I wonder how successful they’ll be.

I don’t expect much success, if any. If the litigation isn’t snuffed out due to protections in the laws against such suits being brought against TX power companies, the standard to prove fault is likely ridiculously high. Assuming they can manage to win at trial, this is a state that endorses “tort reform,” so any damages rewarded are likely to be a pittance.

This is worth reading, I think:

dallasnews.com

“A homeless man gave me an apple. I didn’t deserve it.
During last year’s Dallas homeless count, I met Lawrence Salinas.”

In pursuit of fairness, we believe people should fundamentally get what they deserve. Then, we assume people like Lawrence must be paying a price for their personal failings. But the great lie of humanity is thinking we are alive because we deserve to be.

The truth is deservedness has nothing to do with it. Children don’t deserve to be born into their parents’ poor choices. People living with schizophrenia, depression, chemical dependency, bipolar and anxiety don’t deserve to be treated like second-class citizens simply because their disorders aren’t more acceptable, like cancer or heart disease.

I can almost believe that life is fair, that good things come of hard work and healthy choices, until I meet people like Lawrence. All people need a home, healthy food and care when they are sick. But fairness is a myth. So for people like me, compassion is a living response to the indignity we see around us.

I cannot cure poverty, any more than I can control the path of a storm. The only act I can control is compassion. It is a gift unearned. I did not deserve Lawrence’s last apple, but he gave it anyway.

People like Lawrence, whether they deserve it or not, need a community that lifts them up and knows their names. And our community needs people like Lawrence, who give out unearned apples.

Wild turkey definitely a leaner bird than the pale bloated things that make up domestic turkeys. On the other hand they also actually taste like something.

A few years back my sister-in-law mentioned to a neighbor who hunted that she’d like to try wild turkey. Lo’ and behold, right before Thanksgiving he turns up and gives her one since he’d bagged two with one shot. So she got to pluck a turkey and we had it for Thanksgiving. So my brother took additional care prepping it and also prepared a chestnut stuffing with it.

The bird was fairly lean and had darker meat than the usual bird. Meat flavor had a nutty overtone since it might have reflected what the bird had been eating - probably mast since the area had a lot of oak, hickory, etc. trees.

Because 37% of the country wants to hear them, and that’s a vast market that no studio executive wants to ignore.

No, that’s not it. If it was about market forces networks would cater to majorities. Minorities of other kinds are also vast markets, such as African-Americans or Hispanics, but major networks almost completely ignore them, except as props.

It’s ideology. It’s about a few people with particular mindsets choosing a deliberate narrative that they want to tell on their network. It’s about normalising a particular viewpoint - yes, the liberal news anchor may be disagreeing gently with the authority figure on TV, but the fact that he’s there legitimises the conspiracy theory as a valid point of view. I had exactly this discussion with an educated doctor this week - his viewpoint was that there must be something to all the claims of fraud and illegitimate elections because everyone was talking about it, and they wouldn’t if there was nothing. And that there must be something, because Democrats would be exactly the same if they’d lost.

It is a fallacy to think that networks are about the money. They aren’t. There’s more money to be made, or at least as much, bringing more eyeballs in and broadening their appeal. But that wouldn’t let them push this specific narrative.

The ones who got hit the hardest are customers of ‘Griddy’, which basically charges spot pricing from the wholesale market.

The Democrats need to make this immediate issue #1 and get out in front of it and start making ERCOT and the utilities sweat - start by pulling their 10K’s.

(And I’m still shocked that one of the high muckey-mucks for ERCOT lives in my state (which isn’t Texas, and gets metric shitton’s worth of snow every season.))

As the author of ‘The Black Swan’ says - you need to make the grid anti-fragile, and NOT degrade gracefully.

You can bet the other grid operators are both laughing their ass off and dreading that they themselves could become the next Black Swan.

Tonight’s episode was just gut wrenching. All of it. The atrocities in Syria segment was horrifying, and the QAnon segment was just maddening and scary as fuck.

Basically there’s no real way out of this without a bailout of some kind. A moratorium doesn’t make the bills go away, it just means no action can be taken for non-payment. The power companies are still going to expect payment and are going to take all actions they can short of shutting off power to twist the arms of their customers. And suggesting or ordering the companies to eat those bills is a legislative non-starter, as the immediate response will be screaming about how the companies will have to raise prices and cut jobs to remain “profitable.”

So yeah, either the state legislature is gonna have to dig deep into the coffers or they’re gonna have to go to D.C. to beg for money.

Texans who have suffered for days of freezing cold without power should not be subjected to skyrocketing energy bills due to a spike in the energy market,” Abbott said.

Riddle me this - how can energy markets go sky-high when they can’t/aren’t being used?
Who’s on the other side of the energy trade that stands to collect billions on non-functioning/available commodities (..like natural gas)?

This smells too much like a GameStop short-squeeze in the commodities market.

Plenty of folks who got screwed by ENRON in California can answer that!

Dr Fauci knows that Joe will not “throw him under the bus” for an explanation of the virus. And Joe does understand this is going to take time especially after DT used up all of the advance time by poo-pooing it. With Joe we are headed in the right direction.

Yeah that’s what I want to know. Even if the price per kwh was jacked up to the moon… 100, 1000, a million times 0 is still 0.

So what the fuck?

re: #158 Targetpractice

First came the bills, now comes the shut-offs. Bailout can’t be far behind…

So that means that the rest of country funds their bailout, so they can continue to pretend their system of deregulation works, and would gladly fuck over their own unless someone else foots the bill.

Falls under the definition of rewarding shitty behavior.

Not for nothing, but that is some pretty remedial coronavirus info. A year into this I hope he already knew all of that.
