Huh. It’s almost as if Faux News and R Electeds think that it pays to lie through their teeth, either economically, politically, or both.

Where did they get such an idea?

re: #108 HRH Stanley Sea

Very good insights here

Moved from the previous thread:

re: #289 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Insights that “inside baseball” blogs like Little Green Footballs and Wonkette noted as the coverage of Donald Trump in 2015 was unfolding.

He writes about how he monitored political pundits and mainstream media outlets, along with Twitter feeds like FOX News Channel.

He did not mention looking at any of the blogs no matter where they are on the political spectrum to see how people analysed what was happening in real time.

Journalists seem to have a very negative opinion of bloggers of any stripe, even though people who ran blogs like Jennifer Rubin became respected political opinion writers. He name drops a lot of people such as Sarah Kendzior, but notes he ignored those warnings, and of African-Americans in general (who damn well knew what they saw in Donald Trump).

In Ms. Rubin’s case, I would imagine it was her extensive knowledge about politics and the prominence of her blog which made her a valuable opinion writer, even if I don’t agree with her political opinions.

Anymouse, did you get a CDC sheet requesting you to register with V-Safe to track vaccine effects? Kaiser gave me that request sheet today and I registered with the site. They will do daily check-ins with me for the next 5 weeks minimum.

The Veterans Administration has a form to fill in with unusual effects you might experience, to be filled in over the next month. Once completed, it is to be turned in to the VA. The form says it is information being collected for both the VA and the CDC. It doesn’t say anything about registering with a Website though.

That said, the restaurant was vacant except us and the employees (timing is everything I guess).

Over on his personal account, he’s accusing the American Jewish Committee of slander (for quoting his tweets and asking CPAC to disinvite him).

Something something huge fookin’ winter storm and arctic temperatures kept everyone home.

Nebraska had 1,724 new coronavirus cases for the week ending Saturday, down from 3,606 the previous week. And the number of people being vaccinated increased 59%, to 87,000, for the week ending Sunday.

Nebraska sees big drop in COVID cases, surge in vaccinations (Omaha World-Herald, forty-five minutes ago)

[Gov. Pete] Ricketts again defended his administration’s decision to prioritize shots, during the state’s current vaccination stage, for people 65 and older over those with preexisting medical conditions.

The state’s data, he said, shows that age is the single biggest factor in serious or fatal cases of COVID-19, adding that many people 65 and older have preexisting health conditions.

Ricketts said that he understands the frustration of those with comorbidities, but that “we’re doing this based on risk.”

The risk being “what hurts me politically.”

Nebraska now ranks 24th in total shots administered per capita, improving from 33rd the previous week. It continues to rank particularly well in the rate of those who have received both of their shots (20th) and in rate of shot distribution (13th).

Where the state doesn’t rank so well is in the percentage of distributed shots that had been administered. That figure was 77% last week, which ranked only 45th among the states.

Ricketts said Monday that Nebraska has to do a better job on data reporting and that the state has been talking with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about how it is reporting that information to make sure it’s accurate.

Hey, Pete, on that “do a better job reporting thing?” Maybe you ought to talk to the guy in charge (you).

It did take longer and more effort though. I could loan my washboard to him if he wants to come up here and get it. /s

In the early days of the XX Century, people who lived out in places like this would pool money for a wringer washer and use it as a community machine.

As it happens, I have a wringer washer (my neighbour sold it to me when they were moving away to Arizona). It came in handy when my front-loader crapped the bed.

That beats the washboard, or a thirty-two mile round trip to a Laundromat.

I’m off to bed, as we have to go to Scottsbluff tomorrow (another 120-mile round trip).

I’ll leave off with a nice bit of insanity from the Weekly World News.

VENDING MACHINE MAFIA EXPOSED! (February 21, 2021)

On the surface, it looks like a collection of childish whims and cheap toys all for the affordable price of a couple of coins. At its heart it is ruthless and deadly serious business. Deadly enough in fact that the name of our contact for this article has been changed in order to protect the man who finally broke his silence.

We spoke to Terrence a low level filler-ooney. (A filler-ooney is one of the people who trots around town filling the machines for their organized crime syndicate.) WWN met with Terrence at the Burger de Burgaure for an interview and some tasty fried chicken.

“It ain’t no glamour gig, but I keep food on the table and coins in my pocket” Terrence proclaims. “I got started when those little figures of people in your neighborhood were hot. At the time, I was only thirteen. I had to drop out of school just to be able to have enough time to fill all the machines. It was a gold mine back then.”

Since that time, decline in sales, turf wars and paid hits on some of the more prominent filler-ooneys have made it a dangerous job. Terrence doesn’t seem to worry about his safety much it seems.

“Yeah, it happens. You got your hands full of bouncy balls and mini puzzle cubes, and then POP! POP! POP! someone is throwing a few ounces of lead in your general direction.” Terrence giggles, “I’d quit if I could, but you get addicted to the money and lifestyle pretty quick. Do you know what it’s like to be able to splash your kids kindergarten class with thousands of bouncy balls? It’s magic baby, magic”

For you genealogy folk who have done DNA testing (AncestryDNA, 23andMe, etc.):

MyHeritage is currently running (until 28 Feb) a promo where you can upload your DNA genotyped raw data for not cost. Included is full access to their DNA tools forever.

If your ancestry is colonial American it probably duplicates AncestryDNA’s service. However, if your recent ancestors were immigrants from the old country then MyHeritage may connect you to cousins in said old country that AncestryDNA probably won’t do, as MyHeritage has much more of a global mix of customers than AncestryDNA.

It makes me itch in places no living being should ever itch. It makes me itch everywhere. Think of some of the horrible places you could itch but can’t scratch, and intensify it to something which cannot be ignored.

On the plus side, I could never become addicted to this stuff because I would itch to death first.

Who Funds the Federalist? Finally, We Know. (Center for Media and Democracy, December 9, 2020)

Interestingly, Mollie Hemmingway has characterised this question as “a veiled threat.”

It turns out FDRLST Media Foundation changed its not-for-profit status to 501(c)3, so their donors could get charitable tax write-offs.

That change however means the question can now be answered, as that donor information is publicly available from the IRS.

If you guessed extremely wealthy libertarians and their money foundations, which finance white supremacist organisations like VDARE and American Renissance, alleged paedophiles like Roy Moore, the Real Clear Foundation (which runs Real Clear Politics), &c.

The article linked above is a fascinating read into the web of financing between libertarians, conservatives, and white nationalist groups.

Governor Ricketts being petty, as is his wont.

When former President Trump issued a half-mast notice for anything, his press office was quick to release the same, tailored to Nebraska.

On President Biden’s half-mast notice marking respect and remembrance for a half-million people felled by Covid-19, nothing. No notice from the governor’s office.

I have issues with Biden’s proclamation (due to a government document dripping with Christian religious statements from top to bottom, along with his speech yesterday exclusive of all who are not Christians) but that isn’t what Ricketts’s issue is (Pete Ricketts is a Roman Catholic as well). The end of President Biden’s speech:

May God bless you all, particularly those who have lost someone. God bless you.

My wife lost someone in her family. By your faith, she now receives some sort of eternal punishment for the crime of not believing as you.

Interestingly, Gov. Ricketts is such a strong supporter of the death penalty (a position the Roman Catholic Church universally condemns) that he financed the statewide referendum to restore that abomination.

He justifies his position vis the Catholic Church’s position by citing Cardinal Dulles, who maintains the Church’s Fathers and Doctors of old supported the penalty to justify his own “pro-life” position (as Christianity is often the grab bag of moral philosophy).

Popes John Paul II and Francis oppose(d) the death penalty, but no Pope or Catechism is going to tell Pete Ricketts how to Catholic. But he’s going to tell everyone else how to Catholic.

But those blastocysts: They need the power of the State to support them.

Catholicism and Capital Punishment (Catholic Resource Education Center, article by Avery Cardinal Dulles)

The contortions in that article by Cardinal Dulles to justify capital punishment over the overwhelming condemnation of that practice by Catholic bishops is a marvel of pretzel logic, even within the rubric of theology.

I would argue my governor is a hypocrite, but hypocrisy is a feature of Conservative faith, not a bug. It fits right in with so many conservatives who call on the Church to expel prominent Democrats from the Church (which has already happened with Joe Biden).

Atheist Republic’s last board member has been permabanned from Twitter. She is an ex-Christian in the United States.

AR is a worldwide group which provides outreach and support for atheists who are marginalised or threatened in their nations.

Their ex-Muslim and ex-Jew members were already permabanned by Twitter.

Atheist Republic recently expanded outreach to the United States for atheists who are harassed or threatened here, which caused her to come under attack from Christians.

Twitter offered to her the reason she was initially suspended that “atheism is hate speech.” As a result, she contacted the Better Business Bureau noting that Twitter is violating the law. The day after the BBB responded back they tried to contact Twitter and received no response from them, Twitter permabanned her.

Calling for violence against members of a religion is hate speech

Calling for people to respect the Constitutionally established separation of church and state is not.

MMO:

The good news for the Jews of the world is that they did not lose as many of “the clan” as they had thought they lost. Central Europe was, substantially, cleared of Jews, but that was primarily through emigration. The high death rate, from starvation, in the camps during the last months of the war was due largely to the “Allied extermination policies.” Perhaps that is why the United States continues to send Israel $6 billion a year as a gift; guilt has its obligation.

They note they aren’t going to bother any more pursuing this with Twitter or the BBB, as they view outreach on Twitter as basically a time-suck. They have to wade through hundreds of death threats and long screeds of proselytisation to find tweets which are relevant to their mission of providing support and assistance to those who are marginalised or threatened.

I can understand their position: While religious views are a protected class under civil rights law and the I Amendment, trying to go after a mammoth corporation when you’re a little not-for-profit support group is an awfully big task, and would take time away from their real mission in the USA (finding housing for minor children thrown out of their homes by parents [all sects do this here, not just Evangelicals], arranging legal representation for those threatened here for not believing the same way as someone else, &c.)

Unlike the entire Republican Party whinging about fascists, misogynists, and other assorted flavours of actual haters being thrown off the platform (their base voters), AR says they can do their work of providing aid to atheists in the USA without Twitter.

So far their Facebook pages are safe, though they’ve been banned by a number of nations.

My wife and I were discussing the topic posed here yesterday “if you could bring back a dead musician, who would that person be?”

She told me her choice would be Tchaikovsky.

We then discussed who each of us had seen in concerts before we were married. My wife is not a crowd person, so I was surprised she actually went to any concerts at all.

She said she went to many local groups in Colorado Springs and Denver. She also saw Uncle Bonsai three times, U. Utah Phillips twice, and Bruce Springsteen. (I didn’t know she liked Bruce Springsteen. I like the fact I learn new things about my sweetie every day we are married.)

I’ve been to more concerts because crowds don’t bother me as much: John Denver (I was dragged to that one by my mother for my sister’s birthday, it wasn’t my idea), Yes three times, The Irish Rovers, Sarah Brightman, Rasputina, Rush, Juice Newton, Alabama, Bob Hope, Loretta Lynn (USO concert aboard ship), and Alice Cooper.

Since we’ve been married, we’ve only been to three concerts: The Green Mountain Homesteaders (here in my village so that wasn’t tough to get to), Shelley Segal (in Denver), and Garfunkel and Oates (in Denver)

On the night bus from downtown Glasgow back to the housing projects on a Saturday night.

A woman carrying her little dog gets on, takes the last available seat next to a passed-out drunk. She sets the little dog at her feet. Halfway home, the drunk wakes up, bends over and pukes all over her dog.

He looks up incredulously and exclaims: “I don’t remember eatin’ that!

I don’t know which version of the story came first but I read it in Barry Humphries’ “Bazza Mackenzie” strip in Private Eye:

My favourite vignette is of him boarding a tube train very late at night, much the worse for wear from grog. He sits down opposite the only other passenger in the carriage. She is an exceedingly posh lady with a tiny, pampered Chihuahua on her lap.

The hot carriage and its swaying motion have their inevitable effect upon the inebriated Bazza. He suddenly and abruptly stands up to deliver a great technicolour yawn all over the lady and her Chihuahua. She jumps up in horror, and poor Bazza is mortified. “I’m sorry, Lady, I’m sorry Lady” he keeps saying. Then, looking down at the contents of his stomach on the floor, he spots something that puzzles him. He picks up a wriggling, chunder-smothered Chihuahua and says: “Geez I don’t remember eating that.”

I think this goes to the heart of the matter— ‘atheism’ doesn’t have to mean anti-religion, just ‘without gods’— but for people who are ex-catholics, or ex-christians, or whatever, they might have an antireligious bias that atheism alone doesn’t convey or connote.
I can see an argument made for ‘antireligion’ being separate from ‘atheism’ — if that makes sense. i need more coffee!—

Anti-theists are all atheists; most atheists are not anti-theists.

But all of us are an existential threat: We exist amongst religious people with lower crime rates, lower divorce rates, lower incarceration rates. That is a direct repudiation of the idea you must have a text telling you how to be moral, or every sex act with your spouse must include a voyeur in your bedroom.

The usual counter-apologetics argument goes something like “you are an atheist about every god which was ever proposed except the one you believe in—I just don’t believe in yours either.”

No Christian in the United States worries about Kali-ma, possession by jinn, being reincarnated as a goat, or any other assertion of any other religious faith.

I am happy that Germany is a country in which a large share of the population are de facto atheists/agnostics who still attend church services but more out of a sense of family and cultural tradition: it is where your children are baptized, where you get married and where you hold a funeral service.

I find that church leaders still have way too much political and media influence and use it to get away with some pretty egregious scandals, but otherwise, nobody takes you to task for being an atheist.

don’t get me wrong; i’m an atheist! but it seems to me that if you have the experience of being brought up in a certain religion, —and then disavowing it— gives one a different perspective than if they were raised atheist. A formerly religious person has an insider’s perspective on that religion.

and i would beg to differ with some of this— it seems to me that Christians in the US are VERY concerned about evil spirits, possession, their harry potter books corrupting them— etc. It’s pointless to note that they don’t worry about specific cultural anxieties, like the belief that their penis has been stolen by a witch— common in some cultures at some times, but not in every one.

The same happened to me when I was living (homelessly) in Omaha and would help out with the Metropolitan Community Church’s morning breakfasts.

Jacklyn Glenn once did an experiment where she collected money for a children’s hospital, the video of which she has on YouTube.

The first day she was collecting money on behalf of an atheist group to donate to a children’s hospital, with a friend from a United Methodist church. She got a stream of hate, accusations she was trying to steal money in the name of sick children, &c. There was no “evangelical atheism” (the phrase often used by people when an atheist says they’re one, or questions someone’s beliefs—I never heard of any atheist knocking on doors on Saturday or condemning religious people in the streets for being religious).

The second day they did the same thing except as representing the United Methodist church. Tons of “God bless,” money in the basket, &c.

The end of the experiment showed they collected more money working for the atheist group, as atheists were far more ready to donate to a good cause than Christians.

(This is also reflected in the tips Christians give to waitstaff in restaurants. No atheist ever leaves a tract disguised as money.)

An anti-theist is a person who is opposed to religion (organised or not) because that person believes religion is a pernicious, dangerous, or destructive influence on society. Most anti-theists are not public figures, nor do they speak out (as they don’t want their house burned down or be fired from their jobs).

The term is dated by the Oxford English Dictionary as coming into use in 1833.

“Evangelical atheism” is also substituted with fundamentalist atheism or militant atheism, that is, having the same right to say your beliefs as everyone else, and are pejoratives only used by apologists.

Such as, more recently, the coining of the term “antifa” to describe people who protest police brutality and the rise of American fascism. It’s not like “anti-fascist” is actually a bad thing, but the fascists are using it to try to demonize, and eventually de-humanize, their opponents. That’s why Eric Swalwell was able to defeat Pete Stark in his primary (and why I won’t vote for Swalwell unless I have no other choice, if he runs for higher office). Stark, openly an atheist, was painted as anti-American by Swalwell for being an atheist.

I’m not going to get into it too deeply, but I will say that while it started out that way, the term was twisted by the fascists to refer to anyone that does something they don’t like. Exactly— i’m unfamiliar with this partcular way of delineating the logical space around these questions. ‘Anti-theist’ to me just sounds like ‘asshole’, maybe with a particular animus towards a few groups.

I think it’s possible to be an atheist but not bear animus towards religion, per se. In the same way that one might be heterosexual, but bear no animus towards others who don’t identify that way.

None of those points contradict the fact that anti-theism is not synonymous with anti-religion.

I tend to agree with you from the simple principle that while most religions with a vague semblance of “organization” worship some form of deity, not all of them would necessarily be categorized as gods in the theistic sense.

Germany does not recognize Scientology as a religion and sees it as a threat.

To the point that the late Chick Corea, a practicing scientologist, was not allowed to play gigs at any publicly-owned venues, only private ones.

And when I worked as a teacher/tutor in Germany I also had to sign a document declaring that I was not a member of the Church of Scientology.

Would be neither here nor there, if true, but:

bverwg.de

Well, I have to admit that a vigorous and thought-provoking debate wasn’t what I was expecting when I sat down at my keyboard at 5:30 this AM.

I used to do a normal 8-9 ET (7-8AM CT, ‘cuz that was my schedule when I lived in MN) - but then I had to undergo 3 weeks of hyperbaric oxygen treatments to see if I could get my hearing back, and since the only block of time the facility was open was at 6AM.

I’ve been stuck in this mode now since the treatments.

I did 7-8 AM CT until my first snowstorm when I lived in MN. That winter, I rapidly shifted my schedule to the early side. Nowadays, I usually shoot to be in the office by 6:00 or 6:30 AM CT, and I get up at 5:00 in case there’s snowfall that needs to be dealt with before I leave.

Oh. I missed this.

Shocking news out of Sylvania, Georgia today. Ginger Sugerman, 58, tells us that on Friday night her husband, Arnaldo “Arnie” Lerma, shot her in the face with a 9mm handgun, and then later that night turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. He was 67.

When we talked to Ginger, she was back at their home after being released from a local hospital. We spoke to her and to Lerma’s son, Joseph Fox, 24, who confirmed that Ginger had been injured and that his father had died.

Lerma was a former Scientologist who became one of the church’s fiercest critics and was a central player in Scientology’s struggles with the early Internet. It was Lerma who first posted the famous “Fishman papers,” and also helped to propagate the “Xenu” story from “OT 3” through Usenet groups. For that he was sued by the church, and his house was raided.

Lerma’s personal website became a huge repository for information critical of the church, and it made him a frequent guest of radio and television programs. His involvement in Scientology criticism decreased after the early 2000s, but his website was still a useful resource.

On July 14, 2015, Lerma married Sugerman, another former church member whose mother, Barbara Ayash, had been well known in the church for her work with the front group The Way to Happiness Foundation. We hadn’t heard from Ginger in quite a while, but Lerma continued to post things on Facebook and commented here at the Bunker just days ago.

Ginger tells us that Lerma was suffering from severe back problems, and after a second surgery, was still in great pain and was taking increasing amounts of oxycodone.

“He was miserable. He would talk about suicide,” she tells us.

Then, this week, she says that she found out that Lerma had taken money from her without telling her, leading to a row on Thursday evening.

“We had an argument over it. It just floored me. I told him I wanted a divorce and would file a civil suit. I went down to the court to get paperwork. I told him he had 72 hours to pay me back. That was the argument. He called me names, I called him names. A neighbor heard us and called the cops.”

Ginger says that at this point she became aware that Lerma was armed, and she asked the police to take his gun away. “If they’d done that this wouldn’t have happened,” she says.

The next night, on Friday, she says she was on the couch watching television when she noticed their dog’s tail begin wagging.

“That dog loved him, and that’s how I knew Arnie was coming. He walked down the hall, pulled out his gun, aimed it and click,” she says, making the sound of the gun being cocked.

“I ran, and I fell, and I was helpless on the ground. I held my hands in front of me saying I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. No, you’re not, he said, and he just shot. And that was it.”

As I recall, the German government’s problem with Scientology was its network of not always transparent business involvements.

This of course, would put them into competition with the established Lutheran and Catholic churches, whose business dealings as for example, involving the Bishop of Limburg’s multi-million-euro private residence, are also rather lacking in transparency.

I’m a historian, and I studied the fall of Rome. Here’s what life is like in a dying empire.

I got a chuckle from this line:

Are we Rome? It’s a question people in the United States have been asking for almost as long as there’s been a United States. It’s also the title of a 2007 book by Cullen Murphy, editor-at-large of the Atlantic and—full disclosure—my dad. […] So with the fall of Rome on everyone’s minds again, I called up my paterfamilias a few months ago to ask a variation of another age-old question: Are we there yet?

An anti-theist is a person who is opposed to religion (organised or not) because that person believes religion is a pernicious, dangerous, or destructive influence on society. Most anti-theists are not public figures, nor do they speak out (as they don’t want their house burned down or be fired from their jobs).

The term is dated by the Oxford English Dictionary as coming into use in 1833.

“Evangelical atheism” is also substituted with fundamentalist atheism or militant atheism, that is, having the same right to say your beliefs as everyone else, and are pejoratives only used by apologists.

Worth noting as well that simply saying “I don’t believe in the Christian god” in America gets you the “militant atheism” label.

It turns out Davis was involved in the 1/6 armed insurrection. That may be one of the reasons his clients booted him from the case. But now, Davis is seeking legal fees from his clients he represented “pro bono”.

So, not only should Davis face criminal charges from the insurrection activities, but prosecutors should be looking into his “legal practice” and state authorities move to disbar. Everything this guy is doing is in violation of Code of Professional Responsibility.

And it gets worse from there. This case is a procedural nightmare since none of the rules were followed.

Most other developed countries are giving their people over $1000 a MONTH.

Generous of them

What happens here is that you have something called “Prisbasbelopp” (~= Price Base Amount), from which various payouts and fees are calculated. It’s based on an initial amount and is increased according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The series for the last 10 years (including current one) is 44 000, 44 500, 44 400, 44 500, 44 300, 44 800, 45 500, 46 500, 47 300, 47 600. It began with 4 000 SEK back in 1957…
Any proposal for a minimum wage is a poor one without it being locked to the CPI or something equivalent of the “Prisbasbelopp”.
Just my €.02 worth…

Noticed the discussion about the Japanese text on the guys cap, マガ (Maga). And how it relates to バカ (Baka). So it gave me the idea to make Maga synonymous with baka (or Aho). Some ideas on ways to verbally deliver “Maga” from how “Baka” is delivered:

I think as warmer weather rolls in and people are able to get out doors and space out more effectively, along with the continuing increase in vaccinations, there will be a sustained decline through spring and summer.

I think the real test will be to see how next winter will go. Though I must say, I find myself more optimistic in relation to the pandemic than I have been in some time (having a real President again certainly helps).

1 in 3 Americans know someone who’s died from covid19. I figure that number increases if you’re in a densely populated state or in urban areas as compared to rural (though there are notable exceptions to that as some outbreaks were in rural areas - like around meatpacking plants and the like).

You are very lucky. I’ve been lucky too, to a point. Most of the recent losses have been on my wifes extended family (an uncle, a cousin, a cousins husband, a great aunt). I met all those people though I wasn’t particularly close to any of them. The cousin was a cool dude though. I’ll miss him a bit.

My sister-in-laws uncle also died recently of Covid. I had also had a good friend die on 3/12/20, which was the week when the first wave of shutdowns started and everything went off the rails. He was never able to have a proper funeral. Officially, his cause of death was not Covid, but looking back on it…I wonder if it just didn’t get missed as we didn’t know a lot at that point.

It’s not a song, but something like this is part of the reason why Mrs. Fish and I are Pokemon Go addicts. One summer, driving back from fish country, I pulled into a gas station in El Paso, IL, to top up on fuel and check the oil before getting on the freeway. Damn good thing I did; I popped open the hood, and the upper radiator hose was swollen to approximately 1.5 times the diameter of my upper arm. If we had wound the engine up to 70 mph on I-39, it would’ve blown wide open and probably taken the whole engine with it. There was a Ford dealer literally right next door where I stopped and had them flush the system and replace both hoses. We wound up spending like 6 hours in El Paso, and we walked the kiddos around the town, catching Pokemon while we waited. We got home really late, but we had a good time.
