Colbert: You’re Not Crazy - Pandemic Paranoia Is a Real Thing

According to the experts at CNN, it’s perfectly normal to be feeling a little paranoid after 11 months of pandemic lockdown. So to whomever at NASA decided to embed secret messages inside the Mars rover’s parachute, you’re not helping! We have enough conspiracy theories flying around here on Earth. #Colbert #Mars #Monologue

One observation I have since the lockdowns and masking.
Many men are with their wives in supermarkets and they don’t have a clue other people are in the store with them. They never went shopping. They stand next to the cart next to the wife and block the fucking aisle. With a mask below their nose. Trying to figure out what they are looking at. And I’m not the only one who picks up either a can in my cart and drops it or lifts up the cart and bangs it.
(beep)
And I’m not sure how your supermarkets are but here in Pennsyltucky they have displays in the aisles so every other aisle is a chicane course.
I thought of getting a tricycle bell and taking it with me.

I don’t even know what supermarkets look like today. I go to the weed store, because that’s the only legal option, but groceries are delivered. I really, really don’t want to catch covid, but clearly not enough to become sober.

Gonna disagree here, every time Colbert drops a joke and there is just utter silence it feels weird and cringeworthy to me. I have to imagine it is worse for them not knowing if the joke actually landed or not.

Could definitely do without the suit and ties though, it is long past time for those to become a forgotten vestige of a past era.

re: #172 Hecuba’s daughter

She [Marjorie Taylor Greene]’s irritated that she cannot serve on committees and interrogate witnesses with the same dumb questions and speeches as Ron Johnson or Jim Jordan. She probably wonders why they allowed to be considered full members of their respective bodies when she isn’t. Which is a totally valid question.

One: the House operates on a fairly strict seniority system: freshman Reps. usually don’t get any sort of special treatment just for being loudmouthed extremists (unless, of course, the caucus leadership agrees to it).
Two: most freshman Reps. don’t make being a loudmouthed extremist (seasoned with a healthy dose of alternately whiny and arrogant self-(faux-)victimization) pretty much the sum total of their Congressional persona.

If only the rest of Mandarin Chinese weren’t infinitely more complex than English. /

Much of the perceived difficulty is due to it being different. Japanese grammar is usually considered very hard, but it is extremely regular and has much fewer complications than Indo-European languages. The order of things is generally reversed and they conjugate for things that most IE languages don’t so at first glance it may seem hard to grasp. Even the Chinese tone system is not a big deal provided you are gently introduced to it. Sure, the writing system takes a lot of memorization, but those 8000+ characters have their plus sides too (inherent meaning, useful combinations, and single pronunciation). 2+ billion people get by fine with them.

As for the Japanese writing system, you’re shit out of luck.

Many so-called rules are littered with exceptions. The ditty learned in grammar school
“i” before “e” except after “c” or when pronounced as “a” as in “neighbor” or “weigh” applies except for “weird” and “leisure” and a host of other common terms.

And Einstein got it wrong. Twice.

From a FB friend’s feed:

Roger Marshall’s argument for not raising the minimum wage is that he had a minimum wage job and it paid for his entire college tuition.

When he graduated from Kansas State University, tuition was $898/year. It is now $10,000/year. The minimum wage then was $3.35. It’s now $7.25.

So I’m guessing he wasn’t a math major in college.

What happened to “Kick The Can”?
Playing marbles with bottle caps with paraffin in them?
Actually playing marbles with real glass marbles?
Pitching pennies?
Playing stickball?
And then when the balls eventually rip, playing Halfies?
Playing Chink, like hand ball but hits the ground first, then wall.
Wallball with the loser being put against the wall bent over and everyone gets a throw at their ass.
Wireball, where you get an intersection with wires of varying heights, and each one has a value. You throw the ball and try and hit a wire. If you miss, and your foe catches it, their turn. If you hit that wire and they miss the catch, you get the points and stay the thrower.
Base runner with choices of how many pavement joints will be the course. Two bases. Throwers have to throw ball as you count down to 3 and you don’t have to run untill you pick your spot.

Most of whom learn it as children. I’m pretty sure I could, if forced, get a grasp of at least the basics of any/most of alphabet- and not-tone-based IE language in six months, with intensive study. It would be ugly, ungrammatical, etc. but enough to “get by” (I’m extrapolating from how I learned German by myself). I’m also pretty sure I would get almost nowhere with Japanese and Mandarin in the same timeframe, except maybe (maybe) for the spoken part.

One of the tricky things for both Japanese and non-native learners alike is dealing with the various honorifics and the ways of combining verbs to achieve honorific (or its opposite, the term for which—謙譲語—can’t remember in English); while very systematic, as you say, it is still complicated. New hires for major companies often go through language and culture bootcamp.

“And how about the times Tanden allegedly called the NAACP a ‘pinko organization’ that ‘hates white people’ and used racial epithets? My bad. That was Jeff Sessions. Again, 51 Republican senators (and one Democrat, Manchin) voted to confirm him as attorney general in 2017.”

“Surely Tanden went beyond the pale when she “liked” a tweet calling then-Secretary of State John F. Kerry a ‘traitor’ and ‘Vietnam’s worst export,’ and when she suggested Clinton supporters leave the country. Except Mike Pompeo was the one who did those things. He won confirmation as secretary of state in 2018 with the votes of 50 Republicans and six Democrats, including Manchin.”

Kennedy explained that he was searching for another word before calling her “a neo-socialist, left-of-Lenin whack job.”

Karl rove (wsj) looking for the pivot!

“One approach would be to devote the speech to his anger and grievances over losing the election. He could complain it was stolen and brag about winning more than 74 million votes. He could claim credit for every GOP victory, from flipping House seats to adding state legislative chambers, while blaming others—notably Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—for every GOP failure, including losing the Senate…”

“There’s a second approach Mr. Trump could take Sunday. He could emphasize his agenda and contrast it with Mr. Biden’s policies starting with the new administration’s immigration proposal. He could share an expanded vision of where he would be taking America if he were still in the Oval Office, something he failed to do during his re-election campaign. He could remind people of his pre-Covid economic achievements. He could finally express compassion about those who died or suffered from Covid and declare his pride in Operation Warp Speed…”

“Leaders who come out of the wilderness after defeat do so by changing their approach and re-creating themselves. It’s unclear whether Mr. Trump has the ability to change, especially after a defeat that left him embittered and isolated. What are the odds Mr. Trump takes the more constructive second tack?”

Williams’ mother described her daughter as getting caught up in the moment. She noted that Riley had been radicalized on far-right message boards but described her daughter’s main political goal as, “…wanting America to get the correct information”.

However, Bellingcat has since received information that suggests that Williams was more than just a Trump supporter caught up in the maelstrom. She is somebody who posted racist and Anti-Semitic content as well as filmed a video that appears openly pro-Nazi and promotes accelerationism (speeding up the collapse of society) as a pathway towards establishing a genocidal white supremacist state.

The thing that kills me is when the whole family goes in the grocery store. How about one of the parents stays home with the kids and the other parent goes to the grocery store?

So you have 3+ people giving their germs to the whole store and those same assholes picking up 3x (at least) the Covid germs to take home.

Also, the couples who come in to buy booze. Really? Both of you need to be there, really?

I could go on, but I know no one wants to read it. Dude is certainly tired of hearing it.

BTW - if you’re not familiar with Bellingcat, they’re an outfit made up of data geeks & investigative journalists who try to peel away the layers around online disinformation, brainwashing, conspiracy theories and right-wing hate.

They’ve got a new one about one of the freaks that invaded the Capitol on Jan. 6:

[Embedded content]

Some journalists dislike Bellingcat because they will pay sources. In particular, Bellingcat’s work on tracing Navalny’s poisoners was accomplished by paying for access to some Russian databases. This is apparently a bridge too far for someone.

There is a difference between paying a “live” source for a testimony, therefore tainting it, and anonymously buying “static”, already existing data from crooked officials, who are not themselves sources of any oral testimony (does a journalist buying a book “pay his source”, in this case, a book shop?). So credibility of those who blame Bellingcat for this is doubtful.

One of my former coworkers abruptly picked up and moved back here to Arizona from Oregon late last year. It was a surprise when she called me last month to let me know. She did it in part because of the wildfires last summer and in part due to how some of her neighbors reacted to the wildfires. (Not quite Jewish Space Lasers but you get what I mean.) She lived in a rural area near Portland and just decided she’d move back to a place she knows very well as opposed to all that weirdness.

I mean, not to get all semiotic, but the act of taking an ungendered object, pinning external indicators of gender on it, then attributing a gender to the ungendered object is an excellent representation of how gender is a construct.

I mean, ultimately the people freaking out don’t have a coherent worldview, just a series of instincts that are culturally reinforced, but seriously this is fucking stupid.

Also depressing, because people are going to make money off this hype.

And I’ll give you my reasoning. My daughter was a traveling team gymnast. She got a 2/3 ride to a private college for her work and skill. Most of her team mates also did as well, it was a fine program, high on the college radar.

One of her team mates older sister was sexually abused at a private school.
And with all that horror, the younger girl won a scholarship to Michigan State.
Then as she was in her first or second year at MSU, the Dr. Larry Nasser story broke.
The parents were upset beyond upset.
Just their daughter being there. Regardless.
And that is why I would do time to break Gym Jordans face if ever the opportunity presented itself to me.

Why paw patrol?

Yeah, that one makes no sense to me as I haven’t seen anything related to Paw Patrol that would put it in the sin bin.

This popped up when I checked out wikipedia:

In a 2020 paper published in the journal Crime, Media, Culture, PAW Patrol is criticized for sending the message that corporations are more capable of providing social services than the state.[48] Author Liam Kennedy argues that the show “encourages complicity in a global capitalist system that (re)produces inequalities and causes environmental harms.” Kennedy suggests that PAW Patrol echoes the “core tenets of neoliberalism” by depicting the state and politicians as either unethical or incompetent while the PAW Patrol corporation is entrusted with crimefighting and conservation.[49][48]

Those scum never operate in a vacuum. Like Jerry Sandusky at PSU, people know.
Those that do not come forward are almost as bad as the actual predators.

re: #15 🌹UOJB!

There is nothing Benjy won’t say no matter how asinine it sounds as he begs for more Wingnut Welfare Money from The Mercers.

Ok, I’m going to call it. Shapiro is not a real person, at least not an actual individual person actually named “Ben Shapiro.” He is most likely a Soros-supported committee of lefty satirists whose purpose is to make right wing intellectuals look like feckless idiots. There is no way a real person would tolerate the endless mockery and degradation that result from “his” near-continuous production of self-owns.
