Jackson Browne performs “Looking East” for the Food for Love virtual benefit concert, Valentine’s Weekend, February 13, 2021, benefitting the New Mexico Association of Food Banks.

Poverty levels in New Mexico have reached a crisis point. Since COVID-19 struck, New Mexico food banks are overloaded with requests, and have struggled to keep up with demand.

Unemployment in New Mexico has reached record levels. Families are caught between paying overdue bills or putting food on the table. One in three children and one in five adults are in danger of going to bed hungry.

This is why, on February 13, 2021, dozens of generous musicians and special guests came together to create Food for Love, a virtual concert to raise money to provide emergency food relief in every county, Native American Nation and Pueblo in New Mexico, where poverty ranks 49th in the United States.

100% of every dollar raised goes directly to feed the hungry.

LYRICS
Standing in the ocean with the sun burning low in the west
Like a fire in the cavernous darkness at the heart of the beast
With my beliefs and possessions, stopped at the frontier in my chest
At the edge of my country, my back to the sea, looking east

Where the search for the truth is conducted with a wink and a nod
And where power and position are equated with the grace of God
These times are famine for the soul while for the senses it’s a feast
From the edge of my country, as far as you see, looking east

Hunger in the midnight, hunger at the stroke of noon
Hunger in the mansion, hunger in the rented room
Hunger on the TV, hunger on the printed page
And there’s a God-sized hunger underneath the laughing and the rage
In the absence of light
And the deepening night
Where I wait for the sun
Looking east

How long have I left my mind to the powers that be?
How long will it take to find the higher power moving in me?

Power in the insect
Power in the sea
Power in the snow falling silently
Power in the blossom
Power in the stone
Power in the song being sung alone
Power in the wheatfield
Power in the rain
Power in the sunlight and the hurricane
Power in the silence
Power in the flame
Power in the sound of the lover’s name
The power of the sunrise and the power of a prayer released
On the edge of my country, I pray for the ones with the least

Hunger in the midnight, hunger at the stroke of noon
Hunger in the banquet, hunger in the bride and groom
Hunger on the TV, hunger on the printed page
And there’s a God sized hunger underneath the questions of the age
And an absence of light
In the deepening night
Where I wait for the sun
Looking east

Mom knew how to make a meatloaf with a real crispy crust. Loved taking the end slices and munching on that crust!

This is why my mom makes two loaves when she makes ham loaf at holidays. That way, there are four end pieces (sliced down the middle and horizontally), one for each member of the family.

Mom would baste her ham loaves with orange marmalade and turn the heat up in the oven to caramelize it.

They can afford to do that, because they know that we won’t kill them or threaten to do so. And that’s why the media have a conservative bias: They treat the assholes with kid gloves, and the good and rational people like garbage.

TIL ham loaf is a thing.

It is a special treat in my family, like vinegar pie. Traditionally served at Easter instead of an actual ham, we also have it as an additional meal for Thanksgiving or Christmas when we visit.

Cat that vanished 15 years ago is reunited with owner

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A cat that went astray about 15 years ago has been reunited, older and maybe wiser, with its owner.

Brandy, a brown tabby, was reunited Monday afternoon with Charles, who adopted her as a 2-month-old kitten in 2005.

“It’s amazing. I think it’s unbelievable,” he said Thursday.

As a normal American I’m aghast at the whole CPAC spectacle.

What is it for??

Golden effigies of a criminal loser, a stage deliberately shaped like a Nazi symbol, crazy people running on with perfect teeth and flawed minds.

It’s like a surreal nightmare, that is somehow real…

We are still living in the New Media Reality. Their first attempt to replace Democracy with their surreal nightmare failed, but we saw close it came to succeeding and they are being left with every opportunity and motive to repeat it until they succeed.

I admit I don’t sanitize, but I do wait until I get in the car to take the mask off most of the time. Because of the prevalence of maskholes in my part of the Twin Cities area, I am often near other people who are removing their masks immediately, or just plain not wearing them at all.

I put my mask on when I leave home and take it off when I get back. If I’m walking in an empty area, it might be found hanging off one ear. I sanitize when I get home — around here, lots of places want you to sanitize when you enter, and sometimes I use their sanitizer on the way out.

How delusionaly stupid can Xtian Profit$ get?

They are establishing what they want to be true, and will now try and actualize it. Nothing is “true” for material reasons, things are “true” because they want or need them to be true.

That’s far more dangerous than being deluded or stupid. Deluded people suffer because of their distorted beliefs, “stupid” people are limited by their intelligence: these are people who are perfectly happy to fanatically “believe” something different, day by day, as long as they find it gratifying.

They believe in the sole authority of God, but God exists only to the extent he tells them what they want to hear.

It’s the danger that lies at the heart of a cult—the freeform whirling narcissism mated to authoritarianism—but on a societal scale. This isn’t the precursor to Jonestown, it’s the precursor to the Taiping Rebellion.

Bloomberg: Trump hid ‘fraud’ on inheritance for years, niece tells judge

Donald Trump’s niece is balking at the former president’s claim that she waited too long to file her multimillion-dollar fraud suit against him, saying she would have sued sooner if he hadn’t covered his tracks so well.

Mary Trump on Friday asked a judge to deny Donald Trump’s motion to dismiss the suit, which she filed in September against her uncle and his siblings, Robert Trump and Maryanne Trump Barry. She claims they conspired to skim tens of millions of dollars off her stake in the family business for decades after her father died and left them as her fiduciaries.

The suit by the daughter of Donald Trump’s late older brother, Fred Trump Jr., is one of several serious legal threats the former president faces as a private citizen. If the case in New York state court in Manhattan survives, he could be deposed under oath by the end of the year or early 2022.

The fight may hinge on New York’s statute of limitations, which is two years from the time a victim “discovered the fraud, or could with reasonable diligence have discovered it.” Donald Trump, Maryanne Trump and the estate of Robert Trump, who died in August, argue their niece could have sued much earlier based on documents they handed over in other legal disputes, including a bitter court fight over the family patriarch’s 1999 will.

I don’t take the mask off until I’m in the car. Routine in the car is to start the car (to warm it up), take off the mask, and then slather my hands in sanitizer, some of which gets wiped onto the steering wheel by my hands. It’s worked so far (knock on wood).

I don’t wear the mask in my car unless I’m in a drive-thru lane or using curbside pickup. Maybe 5% of solo drivers are wearing masks in their car around here.

I drove to my hometown today to drop off some records for my nephew at my sister’s house. I left them just inside the storm door. Didn’t have any contact with anyone.

After I left, I drove through downtown North St. Paul, a two block long strip with a lot of the old buildings still intact. When I was growing up, my dad had a Standard service station right on the main corner downtown, and it was always kind of nice to drive by even though the building has been a barber shop for decades.

Today when I drove by it was all gone. Everything on the east half of my dad’s block was gone, and going up was a sprawling three story housing project. I don’t know what kind of housing it will be yet (affordable? senior?), but it’s the final nail in the town as I knew it.

Across the street from the new housing is the oldest bar in MN. The bar had and still has a frog pond in it’s front window that I can remember having to stand on tippy-toes to watch. I was never a part of that bar’s scene because I never drank until I moved away from North St. Paul, and I never really came back after I moved (a whole 15 miles away).

I’m ignoring the news today. Great that the House passed the stimulus bill but I don’t want to know about CPAC or anything that McConnell is saying today.

The Cheechako Homestead is not in this area. The affected area is just outside the Downtown area. The C Homestead in in the Mendenhall Valley, about 9 miles north of downtown.

re: #96 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

To answer your question, it may well not be intentional. However, their instinct when challenged is to double down and refuse to admit defeat, instead hurling insults at their challengers to rile up their revolting base into attack mode.

There’s not a lot of wiggle room for them here. If it wasn’t an intentional act, then it was one springing from ignorance. And an acknowledgment that they adopted a Nazi symbol out of ignorance would be about as damning at this point as admitting it was an intentional act. So their only real option left is the usual DARVO: Deny it is what it is, Attack the people pointing it out, and Reverse things so they are the Victims and their critics are the Offenders for accusing them of being Nazis.

IMO this was likely done by a Nazi-type that happened to be in charge of the stage design for this, and was not intended from the start by CPAC leadership as support for Nazis.

However it started, it has ended as everyone expected it would, with CPAC leadership incapable of removing the symbol because they are Nazis and/or because they don’t want to piss off the Nazis in their horrid movement.

So, assuming it was an isolated actor that started this mess, mission accomplished for that jackass.

Really, they only have three options on their plate:

- Deny reality and attack their critics

- Go “Holy fuck, it IS a Nazi symbol! How could we have missed that?!” and be left gambling over whether it will be a bigger sin to cover it up or leave it as is.

- Puff out their chests, declare “Yeah, it IS a Nazi symbol! What of it?!” and then listen to the “liberal media” gin up excuses for why being a Nazi is a plus for the GQP because it polls well with their base.

re: #102 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

I’ve been there. Pretty amazing place. Quite beautiful. There are two towering mountains (Mt. Juneau and Mt. Roberts) right behind the town, riddled with old gold mines. You can walk from the waterfront up into the valley between the mountains and be in the forest in about 20 minutes.

All the public trash cans in the city have special hatches to keep bears from opening them. On city streets, in the state capital.

Somewhere up those forest trails, there is an open mine shaft entrance (with locked grating so you can’t wander in). I was there in summer, and there was always a very cold wind blowing out of that shaft. One day I was talking with a local and mentioned that. He laughed and said, yeah, in the winter it’s the same temperature and it feels like a warm breeze.

The thing is, Sturgis didn’t really affect South Dakota itself. Instead, that super-spreader event affected everywhere else - because the assholes caught it there, then dragged it home with them, through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and other states. So of course she doesn’t care about the pandemic - why bother, when no one stays in South Dakota long enough to cause an outbreak, and South Dakota’s own citizens are more preoccupied with their freedumbs than their own lives?

You try telling your dog that.

Yeah, I don’t wear in the car unless I’m approaching a drive-thru window, and that’s pretty rare. I wear it when I’m inside. When I’m at work, I break out one of the KN95’s. I constantly use the purell at work in the hall unit. I try to remember, though not always, to use the alcohol sprayer in the car. I sanitize internally with alcohol when I’m home.

Spring in California is a few weeks away but with little rain, only the hardiest of plants are blooming. Crossing my fingers and hoping for some rain soon!

Tomorrow the former US President gets to perform from the center of an alt-swastika.

There is another possibility about the provenance of the stage. What if it’s someone who is antagonistic to CPAC and Trump and who figured CPAC leadership were clueless about various symbols of the Reich. So someone mocking them rather than supporting them and now having the ideal opportunity to point out Trump is acknowledging his Nazi sympathies.

Then it’s false flags all the way down. The important thing is the CPAC institutional response, and they’re blowing it.
