Then it sounds like we’re stuck until 2023 at the soonest.
And the problem is, in 2022 we’ll have to turn out 100 percent of ours and if they get even 10 of theirs they’ll still win because most of ours will be forbidden from voting.
I’m so tempted to suggest putting the $15 Minimum Wage provision in a bill for Texas Relief.

Only in Republican-controlled swing states will they prohibit mail voting.
Nebraska did the exact same thing as Michigan and Pennsylvania (sent applications to every household where mandatory mail voting doesn’t exist), and when our AG Doug Peterson joined the Texas vote-stripping bill against Pennsylvania, he was asked about that.
His answer summed up to “that’s different, Nebraska holds secure elections.”
Places like Nebraska and Utah have mandatory mail voting in many areas of both states. Neither state is interested in restricting mail voting.

So although natural avalanches are still likely I think we may have dodged a bullet for the time being on the big one.
Dangers remain HIGH, the deep instabilities still exist, Please make your own safety decisions. Its still a great day to avoid time spent in avalanche terrain and yet by tonight the urban danger should be reduced enough to return to homes.
Please recognize avalanche forecasting is an imperfect science, there is no certainty that a large avalanche could not occur and yet trends are slowly heading back the right way. Spending time in avalanche terrain is a decision everyone has to make on their own. Please be safe out there.
Remember in the backcountry avalanche danger is HIGH for VERY LARGE slides today.

We have two states within ninety miles of our house with legal weed (Colorado and South Dakota, though Kristi Noem is using state tax money to fund a private lawsuit to overturn the referendum there, using the same rubric that was used to overturn the medical cannabis referendum here: It covers more than one subject—growing, transportation, possession, and use were considered separate subjects by our state supreme court).
Wyoming is moving to make weed legal (legislation failed, so a referendum petition is making the rounds there; if it passes, we’ll be surrounded on three sides by states with legal maryjane).
There’s some complaining about the Virginia bill over legalisation not happening until 2024, but such things as regulation and taxation take some time to set up; they don’t magically fall out of a ballot box.

It’s an “when, not if” question with regards to marijuana legalization nationwide. (AP) — A senior adviser in the U.S. Department of Interior on Friday rescinded a January Trump administration decision to grant grazing allotments to an Oregon ranching family whose members were convicted of arson in a court battle that triggered the takeover of a federal wildlife refuge by right-wing extremists.
The new memo from the Interior secretary’s office found that the Trump administration hadn’t allowed for sufficient time to receive and consider public challenges to the permit for Hammond Ranches Inc. It directed the Bureau of Land Management to further consider the matter.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the latest action came just days before the cattle were expected to be turned out on public lands neighboring the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon.
Steven Hammond, co-owner of the ranch, and his father, Dwight, were both convicted of arson for setting fire to range land and sent to prison for mandatory five-year sentences.
President Donald Trump pardoned the Hammonds in 2018, allowing them to be freed from prison.

To be fair, back when the minimum wage carried that sort of buying power, it really was limited mostly to teenagers and people in-between full-time blue collar jobs. Back when most of these jackholes started working as teens, minimum wage was what you got for summer jobs or the jobs you worked to pay for college tuition and related costs until you graduated.
The expectation was that, once you got out into “the real world,” high school grads would go into the blue collar workforce and college grads into the white collar one, where you’d make enough to cover your own expenses and have enough to start thinking about things like raising a family.
The biggest issue in this country standing in the way of a higher minimum wage? A refusal to accept the reality that the 21st century workforce is not the 20th century one. You can’t get a job on the line at the local factory straight out of high school because your dad is drinking buddies with the shop foreman and start out making enough (when you factor in benefits) to raise a family.

The question I find myself asking is, why do these right-wing platforms always find themselves exposed by the simplest vulnerabilities? I can only conclude that these platforms are built for least cost by people who know enough to be dangerous and who have a good sales pitch, but don’t actually know what the fuck they are doing.

Not only eugenics, taking measures to prevent births targeting an ethic, national, racial or religious group is *very* problematic under international law (cf. CPPCG, Article II, (d)), more so than under US law (cf. 18 USC § 1091 (a) (5)).

The question I find myself asking is, why do these right-wing platforms always find themselves exposed by the simplest vulnerabilities? Parler had an unauthenticated batch-mode API, Gab got eated by a SQL injection - both of these are extremely stupid mistakes that even rookie programmers know how to avoid. I can only conclude that these platforms are built for least cost by people who know enough to be dangerous and who have a good sales pitch, but don’t actually know what the fuck they are doing.

Former French president Sarkozy convicted and sentenced to prison on corruption.
A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.
The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.
The court said Sarkozy is entitled to request to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet.
This is the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted of corruption.
Sarkozy’s co-defendants — his lawyer and longtime friend Thierry Herzog, 65, and now-retired magistrate Gilbert Azibert, 74 — were also found guilty and given the same sentence as the politician.
The court found that Sarkozy and his co-defendants sealed a “pact of corruption,” based on “consistent and serious evidence”.

Over the weekend, I watch the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and that’s still more disturbing shit and how we as a nation treated persons of color. Not only did Johns Hopkins and biotech industry profit from the cell culture samples of Mrs. Lacks (and those cells form much of what we know as the modern medical biotech industry, especially for IVF and cancer research), but they lied and covered up their actions all throughout. The entire family was victimized by this.
And the rules around use of specimens must change. It still allows them to be used without consent of the person under certain circumstances.

Imma just going to say that despite the efforts of (almost completely GOP) DAs and other “authority figures” here in Arizona, the proposition legalizing possession of less than 1 ounce by adults passed 60% to 40% here in Arizona.
Every election, the state sends out a booklet that explains the various propositions on the ballot, and people run statements in there in support of or against said propositions. My brother handed me the over 100 page book last September. Holy crap, most of the pages were taken up with denunciations of prop 208 (the legalization initiative). I was kind of annoyed, because there was only 1 page of pro-208 responses. I said, “Well, if I knew you could pay to be in this thing, I would have written something up about your success in using medical cannabis when all the docs wanted to do was throw opioids at you.”
That said, the legalization campaign knew that it was a waste of time and money to put statements in. They didn’t even hardly run TV ads. I think it was because people’s minds were made up. We’ve had marijuana initiatives on the ballot every two years like clockwork and people are just tired. So there you go…60 percent of the voters in a high turnout election went for legal cannabis. And five weeks ago, dispensaries also started selling to adults. We’re not falling apart.
This kind of reminds me of how the legal gaming interests in Nevada are against gaming in Utah, because it would cut down on the caravans of people going over from Salt Lake City to Wendover. The Skull Valley Indian Reservation (Goshuites) would love to have a compact with the state, because they’d do amazing business, as they’re only 60 miles or so from Salt Lake City, as opposed to 120 miles to Wendover.

Reopen schools faster? Well, if teachers are vaccinated (and they’re in higher risk category than the students) and children under 18 can get vaccines, then we can start having that conversation. Are classrooms set up properly with adequate and proper ventilation? Some schools are doing a better job than others. Overall, some school districts are doing better than others.
But it’s still about mitigating risks.
Masking and social distancing are fundamentals while vaccinations are getting out to people faster. We’re now seeing more than 2 million vaccinations a day, and that number appears to be rising. 7 day average is catching up as we get past the snowstorms that slowed things the past few weeks. With the J&J vaccination being added to the mix, we can see more people vaccinated. With the temp rules changes on the Pfizer vaccine, it means that vaccine can get out to local pharmacies easier for deeper penetration into various communities, including and especially those that were hard hit by the pandemic.

Great news on the washer debacle. The seal looks perfect, darned thing still won’t work. I called the place I got it and amazingly, I went against the husband’s wishes originally and purchased the extended warranty. Still have a couple of years on the warranty.
They’ll either fix it or give a full credit to buy a new washer (which will not be a Samsung).

To be fair, back when the minimum wage carried that sort of buying power, it really was limited mostly to teenagers and people in-between full-time blue collar jobs. Back when most of these jackholes started working as teens, minimum wage was what you got for summer jobs or the jobs you worked to pay for college tuition and related costs until you graduated.
The expectation was that, once you got out into “the real world,” high school grads would go into the blue collar workforce and college grads into the white collar one, where you’d make enough to cover your own expenses and have enough to start thinking about things like raising a family.
The biggest issue in this country standing in the way of a higher minimum wage? A refusal to accept the reality that the 21st century workforce is not the 20th century one. You can’t get a job on the line at the local factory straight out of high school because your dad is drinking buddies with the shop foreman and start out making enough (when you factor in benefits) to raise a family.
In addition, the mom and pop small retailers of yore had less competition from large megaretailers which can lower costs through the benefits of scale…

I get thousands of them over the course of the winter, as the local park as a lake (two minute walk from the house). Loud, shitting nuisances. Every local sports field puts out cut outs of a coyote to scare the geese away from landing and turning the field into their loo. The junior high borrowed a stuffed coyote from the science department (I am guessing) to put out on their football field.

Great news on the washer debacle. The seal looks perfect, darned thing still won’t work. I called the place I got it and amazingly, I went against the husband’s wishes originally and purchased the extended warranty. Still have a couple of years on the warranty.
They’ll either fix it or give a full credit to buy a new washer (which will not be a Samsung).

New York handled geese wrong, as we do many things.
After the Miracle on the Hudson, it was noted that we had way too many geese and needed to reduce their population. Fair enough. But they used poison to get rid of them, turning them into trash.
DC did much better when the deer in Rock Creek Park got too numerous; they had military snipers shoot a few hundred of them, then they were butchered and sent to food banks.
Allegheny County (where Pittsburgh is located) had issues with deer in the local parks. Their response (in cooperation with the state) was to issue some unlimited licenses for doe hunting with bows in those areas - with the option to donate butchered kills to local food banks. Back in the 90s if you wanted to get an extra doe tag the easiest areas to get them were for the game areas right around Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the rural area (Clearfield County and surrounding area) where we hunted.

The business park I worked at some years ago contracted with them to try and save the landscaping from the Canada Geese ‘infestation’.
The owner would drive up and release two border collies. The border collies would start circling the flock; Trying to herd the geese.
The geese would, of course, simply fly away.
I do not think I have ever seen a more disappointed couple of puppers.

She is also upset by change in morning procedures since she has had no food available to her since yesterday evening and no “look outside door” privileges either.
So I expect a serious downgrade in my next staff appraisal.

Manchin and Sinema have to be bribed, not extorted, to get their cooperation. After all, they need to be willing partners in the Biden agenda, not adversaries who could decide to jump ship and make McConnell the Majority Leader. The one thing that could be accomplished is “repealing” most of the 2017 tax cuts, and maybe some of the Bush tax cuts too.
If we could reduce the filibuster so that it isn’t automatically in effect for practically every piece of legislation or persuade 10 Republicans to switch allegiance (ha), then we can make real progress.

Reminds me of Gertie, a remote-controlled boat built into a full-sized plastic Canada goose decoy a group of my friends built. They’d sail Gertie into flocks of geese and ducks on the local ponds, getting some odd reactions but it wasn’t until they added a radio voice link and a waterproof speaker that the fun really started.

The bike paths around the small lake in the local city park that is literally in my backyard used to be nearly impassable for a couple months because of droppings and because of aggressive geese parents. I finally convinced the city park guy to stop mowing the area between the bike paths and the shoreline.
Problems with the geese are now nearly gone, shore erosion has stopped, and now there’s a nice buffer of milkweed, cattails, and other native flowers lining the shore.

The bike paths around the small lake in the local city park that is literally in my backyard used to be nearly impassable for a couple months because of droppings and because of aggressive geese parents. I finally convinced the city park guy to stop mowing the area between the bike paths and the shoreline.
That’s a near miracle in itself. Never seen a park person ready to be reasonable on that topic.
