Hate to say it, but after this reconciliation bill passes, the Democrats get to pass one more reconciliation bill, and that’s it. They should go big on green infrastructure. No court reform, immigration reform, voting rights, or new states will pass.

Then it sounds like we’re stuck until 2023 at the soonest.

And the problem is, in 2022 we’ll have to turn out 100 percent of ours and if they get even 10 of theirs they’ll still win because most of ours will be forbidden from voting.

Only in Republican-controlled swing states will they prohibit mail voting.

Nebraska did the exact same thing as Michigan and Pennsylvania (sent applications to every household where mandatory mail voting doesn’t exist), and when our AG Doug Peterson joined the Texas vote-stripping bill against Pennsylvania, he was asked about that.

His answer summed up to “that’s different, Nebraska holds secure elections.”

Places like Nebraska and Utah have mandatory mail voting in many areas of both states. Neither state is interested in restricting mail voting.

Looks like we missed having any avalanches:

Current Advisory as of
February 28, 2021
Expires 7:00 AM the following morning.
Issued By Tom Mattice

With precipitation decreasing, temperatures falling a little some of the trigger has been removed for natural avalanches. With high winds natural avalanches remain probable in wind loaded areas and yet the urban paths tend to be cross loaded and sometimes scoured.

I am of the opinion that if Behrends didnt slide with the 5 degree warming, 2” of moisture, and 1’ of snow yesterday it will probably start to slowly stabilize today with the falling temps and decreased loading rates. So although natural avalanches are still likely I think we may have dodged a bullet for the time being on the big one.

Dangers remain HIGH, the deep instabilities still exist, Please make your own safety decisions. Its still a great day to avoid time spent in avalanche terrain and yet by tonight the urban danger should be reduced enough to return to homes.

Please recognize avalanche forecasting is an imperfect science, there is no certainty that a large avalanche could not occur and yet trends are slowly heading back the right way. Spending time in avalanche terrain is a decision everyone has to make on their own. Please be safe out there.

Remember in the backcountry avalanche danger is HIGH for VERY LARGE slides today.

We have two states within ninety miles of our house with legal weed (Colorado and South Dakota, though Kristi Noem is using state tax money to fund a private lawsuit to overturn the referendum there, using the same rubric that was used to overturn the medical cannabis referendum here: It covers more than one subject—growing, transportation, possession, and use were considered separate subjects by our state supreme court).

Wyoming is moving to make weed legal (legislation failed, so a referendum petition is making the rounds there; if it passes, we’ll be surrounded on three sides by states with legal maryjane).

There’s some complaining about the Virginia bill over legalisation not happening until 2024, but such things as regulation and taxation take some time to set up; they don’t magically fall out of a ballot box.

It’s an “when, not if” question with regards to marijuana legalization nationwide. Red state governments are trying their damnedest to stand in its way, but whenever the question is put to the people it usually passes. Another Biden over rule:

Grazing rights rescinded for controversial Oregon ranchers

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A senior adviser in the U.S. Department of Interior on Friday rescinded a January Trump administration decision to grant grazing allotments to an Oregon ranching family whose members were convicted of arson in a court battle that triggered the takeover of a federal wildlife refuge by right-wing extremists.

The new memo from the Interior secretary’s office found that the Trump administration hadn’t allowed for sufficient time to receive and consider public challenges to the permit for Hammond Ranches Inc. It directed the Bureau of Land Management to further consider the matter.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the latest action came just days before the cattle were expected to be turned out on public lands neighboring the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon.

Steven Hammond, co-owner of the ranch, and his father, Dwight, were both convicted of arson for setting fire to range land and sent to prison for mandatory five-year sentences.

President Donald Trump pardoned the Hammonds in 2018, allowing them to be freed from prison.

To be fair, back when the minimum wage carried that sort of buying power, it really was limited mostly to teenagers and people in-between full-time blue collar jobs. Back when most of these jackholes started working as teens, minimum wage was what you got for summer jobs or the jobs you worked to pay for college tuition and related costs until you graduated.

The expectation was that, once you got out into “the real world,” high school grads would go into the blue collar workforce and college grads into the white collar one, where you’d make enough to cover your own expenses and have enough to start thinking about things like raising a family.

The biggest issue in this country standing in the way of a higher minimum wage? A refusal to accept the reality that the 21st century workforce is not the 20th century one. You can’t get a job on the line at the local factory straight out of high school because your dad is drinking buddies with the shop foreman and start out making enough (when you factor in benefits) to raise a family.

Unless I’m not understanding what you are getting at here, this would imply that very few were paid what is the equivalent of 18-22 per hour “back in the day” and that everyone else was either paid *more* (blue collar work) or *much more* (white collar work)…

So I ask again, how did business survive it back then, but now it’s would destroy them?

These huge data breaches never seem to amount to much. What was the result of the big Parlor breach?

The question I find myself asking is, why do these right-wing platforms always find themselves exposed by the simplest vulnerabilities? Parler had an unauthenticated batch-mode API, Gab got eated by a SQL injection - both of these are extremely stupid mistakes that even rookie programmers know how to avoid. I can only conclude that these platforms are built for least cost by people who know enough to be dangerous and who have a good sales pitch, but don’t actually know what the fuck they are doing.

They don’t give a shit about anyone who isn’t still in the womb. That’s not pro life. That’s pro forced birth. That’s misogynistic. That’s denying women agency over their own bodies.

The only thing the GOP does care about is tax cuts, and lying about the 2A to keep the misinformed masses angry about Democrats and their efforts to provide more aid and assistance to people like this child.

Former French president Sarkozy convicted and sentenced to prison on corruption.

A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.

The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.

The court said Sarkozy is entitled to request to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet.

This is the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted of corruption.

Sarkozy’s co-defendants — his lawyer and longtime friend Thierry Herzog, 65, and now-retired magistrate Gilbert Azibert, 74 — were also found guilty and given the same sentence as the politician.

The court found that Sarkozy and his co-defendants sealed a “pact of corruption,” based on “consistent and serious evidence”.

Other countries can convict former leaders. Other countries can convict and indict sitting leaders while engaging in the very sorts of crimes Trumpworld engaged in. Trump and the DOJ shredded the rule of law to keep Trump above the law and out of reach of law enforcement. Trump and Barr thwarted ongoing investigations into Trump. All of this requires investigations into what happened - and into Durham’s so-called investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation. It is all a sham from Trumpworld.

Over the weekend, I watch the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and that’s still more disturbing shit and how we as a nation treated persons of color. Not only did Johns Hopkins and biotech industry profit from the cell culture samples of Mrs. Lacks (and those cells form much of what we know as the modern medical biotech industry, especially for IVF and cancer research), but they lied and covered up their actions all throughout. The entire family was victimized by this.

And the rules around use of specimens must change. It still allows them to be used without consent of the person under certain circumstances.

… “We haven’t had this aggressive and positive of a statement from a president of the United States on behalf of workers in decades,” said Faiz Shakir, a former senior aide to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the founder of More Perfect Union, which has released a series of videos on the Amazon unionization drive. “It is monumental that you have a president sending a message to workers across the country that if you take the courageous step to start to unionize you will have allies in the administration, the NLRB, and the Labor Department. It means a lot.”…

“It’s almost unprecedented in American history,” said Erik Loomis, a labor historian at the University of Rhode Island. “We have the sense that previous presidents in the mid-20th century were overtly pro-union, but that really wasn’t the case. Even FDR never really came out and told workers directly to support a union.”

Loomis said the video was a sign of the ways the Democratic Party has moved to the left on issues of economic justice in the past decade…

Biden has taken a number of other steps that have pleased labor advocates and liberals on issues around worker power in his first few weeks in office.

He fired Peter Robb, a Trump appointee at the National Labor Relations Board, the agency that oversees union elections, who was seen as a major antagonist of union campaigns, within a day of taking office in January. His incoming labor secretary, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, has a strong union background, having risen to prominence in the city through a local union chapter. Other high-profile appointees such as Jennifer Abruzzo, Biden’s pick to replace Robb, have also come from the world of organized labor…

Imma just going to say that despite the efforts of (almost completely GOP) DAs and other “authority figures” here in Arizona, the proposition legalizing possession of less than 1 ounce by adults passed 60% to 40% here in Arizona.

Every election, the state sends out a booklet that explains the various propositions on the ballot, and people run statements in there in support of or against said propositions. My brother handed me the over 100 page book last September. Holy crap, most of the pages were taken up with denunciations of prop 208 (the legalization initiative). I was kind of annoyed, because there was only 1 page of pro-208 responses. I said, “Well, if I knew you could pay to be in this thing, I would have written something up about your success in using medical cannabis when all the docs wanted to do was throw opioids at you.”

That said, the legalization campaign knew that it was a waste of time and money to put statements in. They didn’t even hardly run TV ads. I think it was because people’s minds were made up. We’ve had marijuana initiatives on the ballot every two years like clockwork and people are just tired. So there you go…60 percent of the voters in a high turnout election went for legal cannabis. And five weeks ago, dispensaries also started selling to adults. We’re not falling apart.

This kind of reminds me of how the legal gaming interests in Nevada are against gaming in Utah, because it would cut down on the caravans of people going over from Salt Lake City to Wendover. The Skull Valley Indian Reservation (Goshuites) would love to have a compact with the state, because they’d do amazing business, as they’re only 60 miles or so from Salt Lake City, as opposed to 120 miles to Wendover.

Reopen schools faster? Well, if teachers are vaccinated (and they’re in higher risk category than the students) and children under 18 can get vaccines, then we can start having that conversation. Are classrooms set up properly with adequate and proper ventilation? Some schools are doing a better job than others. Overall, some school districts are doing better than others.

But it’s still about mitigating risks.

Masking and social distancing are fundamentals while vaccinations are getting out to people faster. We’re now seeing more than 2 million vaccinations a day, and that number appears to be rising. 7 day average is catching up as we get past the snowstorms that slowed things the past few weeks. With the J&J vaccination being added to the mix, we can see more people vaccinated. With the temp rules changes on the Pfizer vaccine, it means that vaccine can get out to local pharmacies easier for deeper penetration into various communities, including and especially those that were hard hit by the pandemic.

This is part of what drives the stupid postings all over Facebook. Nearly all the grumpy Trumpers are old folk.

Life in 2021 is not what is was in 1971. That is almost a tautology. But the grumpy old Trumpers want to go back to when they were children in the 1950s and 1960s.

Minimum wage is just one of the many problems we face in aligning our laws with the 21st century.

My dad worked two jobs in the early 1960s because he had a several thousand dollar hospital bill hanging over his head from my birth. So, no, not even a blue collar job wasn’t enough to keep up with a growing family faced with an unexpected hospital bill.

New York handled geese wrong, as we do many things.

After the Miracle on the Hudson, it was noted that we had way too many geese and needed to reduce their population. Fair enough. But they used poison to get rid of them, turning them into trash.

DC did much better when the deer in Rock Creek Park got too numerous; they had military snipers shoot a few hundred of them, then they were butchered and sent to food banks.

Nope, they’ve moved the date again. There is some Qidiot who said March 20; I think I also heard through the grapevine something about April (21st, maybe?)

CNN broadcast a segment on Feb 25th on Qidiots who believed Trump was going to resume office on March 4. When the reporter asked one how she would react if that didn’t happen, she responded that would mean Trump had a different plan. You cannot persuade them —Lindell has the truth, and they are sticking to it. Some also think that the military has taken over as in Myanmar and will soon be officially putting Trump back in office. These people remain a danger to the survival of our nation, given that so many GOP lawmakers support this storyline. More evidence that the modern GOP is incompatible with democracy. GOP delenda est.

This says everything I need to know about the person:

When the minimum wage was the equivalent of what 18-22 an hour is now, how did those small business deal with it back then?

re: #72 Targetpractice

In addition, the mom and pop small retailers of yore had less competition from large megaretailers which can lower costs through the benefits of scale…

I get thousands of them over the course of the winter, as the local park as a lake (two minute walk from the house). Loud, shitting nuisances. Every local sports field puts out cut outs of a coyote to scare the geese away from landing and turning the field into their loo. The junior high borrowed a stuffed coyote from the science department (I am guessing) to put out on their football field.

But, but deregulation is GOOD for business……

Texas Energy Co-Op Files For Bankruptcy After Storm, High Bill

The largest power cooperative in Texas filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, citing a massive bill from the state’s electricity grid operator following last month’s winter storm that left millions of residents without power for days.

Brazos Electric Power Cooperative Inc. filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, according to court documents reviewed by NPR.

The company in court documents says it received an essentially unpayable $1.8 billion bill from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the entity that maintains and operates much of the state’s electricity grid.

*snip*

Brazos said in court documents that the company was in solid financial shape leading up to the late February cold storm. As February began, the idea the company would end the month preparing for bankruptcy was “unfathomable.”

In reality, deregulation is only good for the scammers, gougers, and buccaneers whose liberty to scam, gouge and exploit has long been inhibited by the watchful eye of federal regulators. This is the real reason the hinterland gentry hate the government so much, and the real reason the right wing anti-government movement exists at all. Otherwise, government power is music to their authoritarian ears.

With the ridiculous amount of Canadian Geese in the west, my dude came up with a plan. Feed them to the homeless. I think it’s a solid plan. Duck stew for the masses.

Depending on what those geese have been eating they might not be so safe for people to eat. A large flock* hung out year round where I used to work in Pittsburgh along the Mon in the early 2000s. Given what I suspected was being sprayed on and around the area as weed control I don’t think I’d want to eat any of those birds.

Allegheny County (where Pittsburgh is located) had issues with deer in the local parks. Their response (in cooperation with the state) was to issue some unlimited licenses for doe hunting with bows in those areas - with the option to donate butchered kills to local food banks. Back in the 90s if you wanted to get an extra doe tag the easiest areas to get them were for the game areas right around Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the rural area (Clearfield County and surrounding area) where we hunted.

There’s a local Northern Virginia company called “The Geese Police” with the motto “When you need to get the flock out”.

The business park I worked at some years ago contracted with them to try and save the landscaping from the Canada Geese ‘infestation’.

The owner would drive up and release two border collies. The border collies would start circling the flock; Trying to herd the geese.

The geese would, of course, simply fly away.

I do not think I have ever seen a more disappointed couple of puppers.

True.

The one HD should have pointed out was the Carolina parakeet, which could still breed in the plantationised East (though whether it would be able to do so in modern urban areas may be a bit more of a question), but was exterminated because it had humanesque mourning behaviour that didn’t get suspended even when the reason for the first death was birdshot.

They also do that at Dulles Airport with the Fairfax County police swat team.

Several of the local county parks close on Sunday mornings during the winter so that volunteer bowhunters (who are vetted) can try and thin the deer population. I understand that there are even procedures on what to do if the deer expires in a neighbor’s backyard.

re: #174 jeffreyw

I got a big LG tv that I used mostly for a computer monitor, and burnt in some icons from web browsers. I had the extended warranty and they sent two fellows out to fix it with a brand new screen at no cost to me.

Since I’m not working any longer my only issue is that I’m running dangerously low on night shirts. How ever will I survive? 😁

That said, hubby has work clothes he keeps at the office which get basically de-greased once a month. I’m thinking those will need to be torched.

re: #206 ckkatz

There’s a local Northern Virginia company called “The Geese Police” with the motto “When you need to get the flock out”.

The business park I worked at some years ago contracted with them to try and save the landscaping from the Canada Geese ‘infestation’.

The owner would drive up and release two border collies. The border collies would start circling the flock; Trying to herd the geese.

The geese would, of course, simply fly away.

I do not think I have ever seen a more disappointed couple of puppers.

Still recall the time years ago when I was walking the dog (who had just returned from the groomer) next to a pond filled with Canadian geese. Before I could react, he had lunged into the pond to get one (practically dislocating my shoulder!) — and immediately jumped out because there was little he hated more than being in water. He wanted a goose but not that much!

re: #181 Dangerman

THERE IS A HUMMINGBIRD right now in our Crepe Myrtle

it landed on branches several times

i’ll never get a picture of it

mrs dm spotted it first
i confirmed
or else it’s a really big bee

we do put out nectar feeders on the other side of the house

this is a huge thing
not only that at least one is here, but that we (ok, she) spotted it)

wow

We see them around here fairly often. I’ve never gotten a decent picture.

In other bird news, something tried to fly into my kitchen window this morning — probably a bird (or the biggest bee ever). Came into my field of vision and backed away fast. Was it my pre-coffee face or the obviously indoor scene behind me?

People really suck when it comes to nuts and bolts politics and knowing how things actually work in government.

Just add the minimum wage and override the parliamentarian. Pressure Sinema and Manchin to approve. Wave a wand and get everything you want.

That’s not how it’s done. That’s not how any of this works, but that’s not stopping people from claiming that Biden can just get pressure Sinema and Manchin and get to 50 on the relief bill and that Harris can just hand wave the parliamentarian’s objections on the minimum wage. There’s a whole lot of Jedi mind tricks here that people think can happen to get it to done.

Right, because what’s the strategy after that? Show your work and explain how you get both Sinema and Manchin to flip on the minimum wage hike. Show how you get past the objection. Show that you have the votes.

And then what happens to the rest of Biden’s agenda? Because Biden made it clear that the minimum wage hike isn’t part of his agenda to get relief done.

Thing is, I do agree we need the minimum wage hikes and that Sinema and Manchin are wrong, but there’s a lot else at play, including Cabinet confirmations, judicial confirmations, and even 2022 elections that have to be in consideration here. You can’t just take a narrow view - you need big picture, but those who are demanding everything dump into the relief bill think that this is the one shot.

Floof Cat and I are currently not on speaking terms.

She has a vet visit in under an hour.

Tried for 40 minutes to get second sedation pill in her. Complete fail since I only have two hands and you need at least 1-2 more to deal with an uncooperative cat. So she is hiding downstairs right now. (Though also perfectly willing to bite me in the ankle when I tried to go back upstairs five minutes ago.) She is also upset by change in morning procedures since she has had no food available to her since yesterday evening and no “look outside door” privileges either.

So I expect a serious downgrade in my next staff appraisal.

Off to catch her and head to the vet. Hopefully they will be able to deal with her without further sedation.

Did you just malign my benevolent rulership of this place?

Ouch! Sounds painful. And then to be gifted with a soggy, formerly well groomed, dog.

I seem to remember back in the 1990’s a landscape worker in Columbia, Maryland was arrested for killing and eating one of the local Canada Geese. So probably best that no geese were caught.

And of course there is the joke about the owner who had to stop walking his dog because it was continually attacked by the geese. Apparently the dog was pure-bread.

Manchin and Sinema have to be bribed, not extorted, to get their cooperation. After all, they need to be willing partners in the Biden agenda, not adversaries who could decide to jump ship and make McConnell the Majority Leader. We are in a no win situation since too much of the Biden agenda cannot be enacted through reconciliation. The one thing that could be accomplished is “repealing” most of the 2017 tax cuts, and maybe some of the Bush tax cuts too.

If we could reduce the filibuster so that it isn’t automatically in effect for practically every piece of legislation or persuade 10 Republicans to switch allegiance (ha), then we can make real progress.

Edited to correct last sentence (where part of the sentence was inadvertently eaten by another correction)

Reminds me of Gertie, a remote-controlled boat built into a full-sized plastic Canada goose decoy a group of my friends built. They’d sail Gertie into flocks of geese and ducks on the local ponds, getting some odd reactions but it wasn’t until they added a radio voice link and a waterproof speaker that the fun really started.

Geese are nasty to have around. I went to a Dr. appointment at a place with small ponds scattered about, a few geese came and they made the mistake of feeding them. They never left. Goose shit everywhere.

The bike paths around the small lake in the local city park that is literally in my backyard used to be nearly impassable for a couple months because of droppings and because of aggressive geese parents. I finally convinced the city park guy to stop mowing the area between the bike paths and the shoreline.

Problems with the geese are now nearly gone, shore erosion has stopped, and now there’s a nice buffer of milkweed, cattails, and other native flowers lining the shore.

That’s a near miracle in itself. Never seen a park person ready to be reasonable on that topic.
