If a picture of your Governor makes you want to bathe, maybe he shouldn’t be your Governor any more.

On the other hand Cuomo is just an asshole and creepy, and pretty much everyone agrees. He has obviously said some pretty inappropriate things to women. It does not seem that he’s a groper, though.

I think he should go, but YMMV.

Hell, my Guv is Wheels Abbot. I’d trade him for NY’s Mostly Competent Creeper in a heartbeat.

If there weren’t Democrats in the Senate who were also too-precious then Tanden would have gone forward.

This is the problem with a split Senate.

I still lament that the Democrats couldn’t pick up a Senate seat from Iowa or Maine in the last election. That would have made a big difference in many things.

re: #1 Charles Johnson

thankfully the Dems have a good bench in this area, still pissed off about the obvious double-standard in effect and considering the “stature” of the previous administration’s cabinet, I find it onerous that Joe Manchin can’t put his personal feelings aside regarding his own daughter’s profiteering and flexes his “political muscle” in this fashion… who is he helping here other than as a salve to his own family.

Why? Because the Court has been carefully stacked with religious nutjobs for the explicit purpose of overturning Roe. This was the end game.

So, MrBWS is watching a Hallmark Channel movie (yeah, he’s addicted to them, don’t ask) and we keep saying “captain,my captain!”

And I finally say. you know, that’s a Walt Whitman poem about the death of Abraham Lincoln?

He did not.

So, whilst I was googling the poem, I came across this undiscovered jewel:

WALT WHITMAN | O Captain! My Captain!

she damned sure deserved an “A” for that brilliant effort.

When history looks back at this time it will be held up as an example of a depraved sociopolitical purge driven by hysteria and lunacy

Wait, who cancelled the six books? Democrats? Liberals?

No! It was the company (Dr. Seuss Enterprises) who manages his estate!

Thanks for playing, Li’l Marco Flopsweater, but see, it’s a *business decision to protect the greater brand*.

re: #15 Dread Pirate Ron

Wow that story is nuts.

“UT needs rich donors who love The Eyes of Texas more than they need one crop of irresponsible and uninformed students or faculty who won’t do what they are paid to do,” Steven Arnold, a retired administrative law judge and UT-Austin law school graduate, wrote to Hartzell. When reached for comment, Arnold said he had not donated to the university in recent years and has been completely turned off of college football after the events of the last year.

Yeah, how dare students and faculty start thinking for themselves? Fuck those people.

//

Also, this:

“Less than 6% of our current student body is black,” wrote Larry Wilkinson, a donor who graduated in 1970, quoting a statistic UT-Austin officials have stated they’re working to improve. “The tail cannot be allowed to wag the dog….. and the dog must instead stand up for what is right. Nothing forces those students to attend UT Austin. Encourage them to select an alternate school ….NOW!”

Texas just never fucking disappoints, does it?

Anyone else notice the similarity that a Republican-run federal government was twice given a heads up of an impending terrorist attack (from Al Queda in 2001 and MAGAts in 2020), and both times massively failed to protect the country?

A little background, from Wiki:

John Sinclair wrote the Texas-specific song lyrics in 1903 to the tune of the original folk song, “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” that was published nine years earlier in 1894. Sinclair was the editor of the Cactus yearbook and a UT band member, and he wrote the lyrics per the request of band member Lewis Johnson. Johnson was also the program director of the Varsity Minstrel Show that raised funds for the university track team. He debuted the song at the minstrel show.[1]

and this from two Texas Heisman winners:

The lyrics of the song have been interpreted as embracing the “Lost Cause” ideology, which advocates the belief that the practice of slavery in the antebellum South was just and moral.[7][8]

(:::I think this is a reach, as the lyrics do no such thing:::)

In June 2020, several players on the University of Texas at Austin football team requested that the university replace the song with one “without racist undertones.”[8][9] In response to the players request, African-American former University of Texas football players Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams spoke out to keep the song in place as UT’s alma mater.[10]

Campbell’s comments on “The Eyes of Texas” are as follows:

“I’m proud of that song,” ~ “I think there’s a lot of things that can be done other than that song in my opinion. I just believe ‘The Eyes of Texas’ stands for something.”[10]

Williams was also quoted as saying:

“I think it’s important to understand our history and to understand where the song came from, but I think it’s more powerful to transform the meaning of the song and the definition of the song rather than trying to erase our history like it never existed,”[10]

Following those requests, interim UT president Jay Hartzell announced that the song would remain as the alma mater but that the university would work to “reclaim and redefine” the song by openly acknowledging its history.[11][12][13]

In October 2020, the University of Texas band decided it would no longer play the song, due to the song’s history. The athletic department stated that it would play a recorded version of the song prior to sports events.[14]

A March 2021 investigative report by The Texas Tribune published snippets of alumni and donor emails to president Hartzell. In these emails, the alumni and donors demanded that Hartzell take a stronger stance supporting “The Eyes of Texas” and threatened to cancel their financial contributions.[15]

DT does not have dementia; he has always lived in a world where truth does not matter and he can bluster his way out of almost any trouble. He knows what he is doing and that is to take actions that benefit him personally; he has no interest in problems and issues that the average American faces.

Sun City

It was officially opened on 7 December 1979, then located in the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana.

As Bophuthatswana had been declared an independent state by South Africa’s apartheid government (although unrecognised as such by any other country), it could provide entertainment such as gambling and topless revue shows, which were banned in South Africa. Those factors, as well as its relatively close location to the large metropolitan areas of Pretoria and Johannesburg, ensured that Sun City soon became a popular holiday and weekend destination.

No wonder Repugs liked it.

Breaded fish for sandwiches, breaded cheese - curds, mozzarela sticks, etc, breaded mushrooms (actually the little white buttons are best), zuchini chips, onion rings

We do all varieties of frozen snacks - I’ve done dumplings, pierogis, etc. I’ve also had good success with frozen pre-cooked grilled chicken strips.

Creative works from the past that should no longer be performed due to outdated stereotypes (IMO):
Peter Pan
The Mikado
Madame Butterfly
Flower Drum Song
Oklahoma
Fiddler on the Roof (??)

gonna disagree about Fiddler. It’s set in a very specific time and place, and the so-called stereotypes are a fairly accurate depiction of that time and place.

Though if you want to add
South Pacific

to all this, you’d get a lot of agreement from Asian American actors (though, sadly, these are the only big musicals that give any sort of employment to Asian American actors)(and there’s a lesson here…..).

The Mikado is all about mocking English people through the medium of Japanese people so I’m not sure if it belongs on this list….

See this version

The Mikado 1987 Act I Eric Idle Lesley Garrett

Which strips away all pretense and depicts everyone as English.

re: #82 ipsos

There was a Yiddish production of Fiddler that was getting great reviews off Broadway in the Before Times.

Is it different when we’re the ones staging it, versus outsiders?

I am ambivalent about Fiddler because it’s one of my favorites. The other shows I listed: The Mikado, Flower Drum Song, Madame Butterfly, are shows with Asian characters that are almost always played by non-Asians. Peter Pan is horrible on many levels, not only the portrayal of Native Americans. Oklahoma has a Muslim character who was thrown in there just to be made fun of.

Mom and Dad had a whole set of Gilbert & Sullivan LPs. When I was a kid they took me to see The Mikado by the touring D’oly Carte Company. I loved seeing a live performance!

How do you feel about this version of the Mikado…?

The Mikado 1987 Act I Eric Idle Lesley Garrett

It strips away the pretense of the story actually being about mocking/observing Japanese people and instead makes the “subtext” text by showing it is about mocking British people?

Depends on which version. The substantially revised book in 2002 takes care of a lot of the problems.

Didn’t know there was a new version of Flower Drum Song — will have to look for that now…

There was another production of The Mikado (maybe 20 years ago?) that cast Asians in the main roles and dressed the characters like anime. I can’t find any clips though.

This is either perfect or horrible for how to update the Mikado depending on how you view things… Image: 55a6d124526fb.image.jpg

One of the underlying jokes of the Mikado as I understood it is that British people had a rising interest in Japanese Culture at the time but were mainly experiencing it through their Victorian equivalent of a theme park, so portraying the Mikado through Anime, which is the lens through which most modern day Westerners view Japan is actually really on point in my opinion.

Not to mention the entire driving force of the Mikado is a law that makes flirting before marriage punishable by death, something that makes precious little sense except as a comical exaggeration of Britain’s own Victorian views on the matter.

Pfizer, reaction is relatively minor so far, some slight soreness in the arm, and some tiredness but that might be related to the awkward story and a half about how I actually got home after getting my shot with is a more complicated story than I care to share at the moment, but suffice to say it involves me getting to the place I was getting the vaccine by cab, with no cell phone to call another one to take my back home.

They are howling at the Moon and possibly calling out their Red (state) Guard militia to keep the Doctor’s OWN COMPANY (Dr. Seuss Enterprises) from withdrawing 6 books from publication. Gambling is the reason for the continued success of Wendover and Mesquite, Nevada. They do a great business relieving people of their money, and that’s how the Mormon church leadership likes it. They’d hate it if the Skull Valley band (near Tooele) was ever able to build a casino.

Stands to reason. The Repugs have wasted so much time, effort and even violence to accuse Democrats of election fraud, they have to be hiding, or trying to distract from, something massive of their own.

My family’s disc golf pro shop has been very strict and our customers tell us constantly that they appreciate that. We allow only 4 in at a time and require masking and hand-sanitizing to enter. I haven’t worked there since last March but having just gotten my second shot I will be helping out again now.

And my help is needed: This is one area of economic growth, BTW. His sales last year increased 54% over 2019 and this year, after two months, they’re running at 180% over 2021!
