All I can think is that everyone with a (D) after their name is so goddam traumatized by 2010, and the way Fox News was able to convince Americans that THEIR HEALTH CARE WAS BEING TAKEN AWAY BY SOCIALISTS!!!

… that they’re afraid to take decisive action in anything other than a +14 D district.

The Republicans aren’t going to allow a militant center, so the Democrats are going to do it.

Seriously, though, the Republican party has no room for moderates and the Democratic party is the “not the Republicans” party, so we get all of them.

They are going to make sure that Republicans retake Congress in 2022 and the White House in 2024 by refusing to help President Biden get anything done. His agenda dies in the Senate. A failure to pass voting rights legislation will ensure Republican dominance.

What exactly is involved in killing the filibuster? It needs to die if democracy is to survive. Otherwise, it’s obstructionist politics til the next election, Dems lose, and it’s hello Nazi Germany. Simple as that.

For the actual suburb where I live, Kristen Wiig, but she only lived here a few years in high school. (And was painfully shy, believe it or not!)

For the town I lived in until I was 12 (Concord, CA): Tom Hanks was born there.

Houston, Texas (on and off 1970s-1990s): The current mayor, Sylvester Turner, not just graduated from my high school in 1973, but he was the student body president and valedictorian. Which was quite something in a 96 percent white school district.

Austin, Texas (1980s-1990s on and off): too many people to count.

Salt Lake City (1990s): uhmmm, quite a few people as well.

For the city I now live in (Mesa, AZ): Buck Owens was a resident as a teenager. Also, the disgusting senator from Utah, Mike Lee, was born here.

Yes, but their calculus seems to not take into account that the stimulus is popular even among Republicans in their states.

Agree 100%. It was good to see Lawrence explain tonight the disaster that can befall a party if they push a “moderate” too far: the Senate elected in 2000 was 50-50, with the GOP running things because Cheney was VP. The GOP was not interested in accommodating lifelong Republican Jim Jeffords, who soon left the party to caucus with Democrats and give them control. It’s crucial to keep Manchin and Sinema happy. If McConnell regains control, not a single piece of legislation will pass and not a single judge will be confirmed.

Name a policy position. Any policy. It’s popular with many republicans. Tell them it’s a Democrat idea, then all of a sudden they hate it.

They support the ACA, but not Obamacare.

There’s a pattern.

48
Targetpractice  Mar 4, 2021 • 8:36:14pm

Manchin’s (and likely Sinema’s) actions are pretty easy to understand. With the filibuster intact, the only bill they’ll likely have to take a liberal stance on for the next 9-10 months is the Rescue America Bill. And the fact that Schumer needs their votes on that bill means they have oversized leverage to “moderate” it to make them look more “centrist” to voters in six years.

After it passes, they can spend the next years hemming and hawing about how they’d love this bill or that bill to pass, but insisting such can only happen through “bipartisan” means and responding to criticism about the filibuster by standing on “principles” that translate as “Any vote I don’t have to take is one less one I have to face criticism for in 2026.”

True, but they know this is a bill from Democrats. It’s not like anyone has been hiding it. It’s not the ACA, where it has some catchy name associated with the black man in office, since there’s no black man as president.

As a Texan, I understand (I just realized I don’t know who my rep is since I don’t think Ratcliffe ran for office). But they’re not exactly engaging with their constituents. Also, it seems that Manchin has a financial interest in not supporting the minimum wage.

Joe’s constituents voted for Needi Amin by over 20 points against Biden. So in a bill that’s being seen as key to Biden’s presidency, he would actually get more positive responses back home from fucking over his own party. Hell, I imagine they’re already pleased that he helped put the kibosh on raising the minimum wage for another decade.

Or at least take up masking if someone has symptoms. You can transmit flu before you have symptoms, but not easily, so masking would make a big difference.

Just over 70 years separate the Wright Flyer from the F-16.

And in the 42 years since the F-16 went active, we have built the F-35, which, like the previous TFX Wonderplane, the F-111 (a piece of shit), is also a piece of shit $100+ million airplane.

You would have thought we would quit trying to build round TFX planes to fit into numerous non-round holes, but we haven’t. We are the idiots of the procurement world.

He was, essentially. Several G’s easy in those maneuvers at the speeds a F-16 can do them. Here’s a 9g maneuver:

Pushing blood into his upper body. If you depend just on your g-suit (aka “speed jeans”), you are going to pass out, crash, and die. He was pulling 7+ Gs for quite a bit of that flight.

Hard work.
