The question about the solo press conference reminds of 2016 and the clocks that the “liberal media” would have somewhere on the screen that said something to the effect of “# of days since Hillary Clinton held a press conference.”

We get it, guys, you want a return to the shitstorm pressers that Trump threw practically every other day. But it’s time to move on and actually start reporting the news, rather than hoping for the day that you can catch Biden with a “Have you stopped beating your wife?” question.

Dick Durbin’s email today:

The insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6 did not wear white robes and hoods, but they might as well have. They are the latest incarnation of a violent white supremacist movement that has terrorized fellow Americans on the basis of their race, religion, and national origin for more than 150 years. And they aren’t going away anytime soon.

Confrontations with President Trump
Upon becoming a White House Correspondent in 2018, Jiang has found herself in numerous clashes with President Trump, often in response to her line of questioning. These interactions have amassed global news coverage questioning sensitive issues around racism.[18][19][20]

On June 15, 2018, Jiang asked President Trump why he felt North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat to which he raised his hand and said “Quiet” before remarking to another person, “She’s so obnoxious”.[21]
On September 26, 2018, Jiang was told to “sit down” after repeatedly asking President Trump about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.[22]
On March 17, 2020, Jiang reported that a “White House official referred to Coronavirus as the ‘Kung-Flu’ to my face.”[23]
On April 3, 2020, in response to Jiang’s question about Jared Kushner’s use of “our” to describe the federal government’s stockpile of medical supplies, President Trump called it a “nasty question.”[24]
On April 19, 2020, when questioned on why President Trump did not warn Americans about the virus sooner, Jiang was told to “just relax” and to “keep your voice down”.[25]
On May 11, 2020, Jiang questioned why there was an emphasis on competitively comparing coronavirus testing, President Trump responded “Don’t ask me. Ask China that question.” Jiang responded “Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically?” to which Trump replied “I am not saying it specifically to anybody. I am saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that.” Trump abruptly left the press conference soon after this interaction as CNN White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins was turned down from asking her question.[4]

I gigged with them one night only at one of the most popular bars in Minneapolis (The Cabooze). Someone made a hand-held video of the gig and it was the drunkest video I’ve ever seen. The bass player and guitarist drank a half bottle of Jack Daniels each on the stage. You can buy an album with THB on one side and The Bishops on the other side.

We’re talking about a $1.9 trillion package and Manchin’s looking to cut money to those who are most in need by trying to instate tax liability on UI benefits on the first $10k?

He’s going to derail to the relief package because why? Because people don’t need the money? What does he actually want here or represent? His state has long lagged on economic metrics and suffers from higher unemployment rates than average.

I’ve noticed that too, and I think it’s a hopeful sign. Maybe it means Twitter has successfully purged more of the bots and insurrectionists than we thought. Or that the polling on Biden’s approval is right and he and his policies really ARE that popular. Either way, I’m not complaining.

I gigged with them one night only at one of the most popular bars in Minneapolis (The Cabooze). Someone made a hand-held video of the gig and it was the drunkest video I’ve ever seen. The bass player and guitarist drank a half bottle of Jack Daniels each on the stage. You can buy an album with THB on one side and The Bishops on the other side.

re: #139 No Malarkey!

Definitely should be several hundred more Congressmen.

My plan is no state can lose any representatives during reapportionment, unless they actually lose population, and setting the total number of representatives such that the normal requirements of as close as possible to equal numbers of people per representative per state still hold. That’ll allow the total size to _roughly_ grow with population growth.

Like say, if say most of Florida has to be evacuated due to global warming, they lose seats, but New Jersey shouldn’t lose seats just because it’s growing more slowly than the nation as a whole.

The Wyoming plan mentioned elsewhere has the drawback, that it is sensitive to the population of the least populated state.

If Wyoming had lower population growth than the nation on average, the size of the House would increase faster than population growth. If Wyoming had anomalously high population growth and shot up in population between two censuses, but still had the smallest population, the House could actually decrease in size, at least based on my understanding of it.

That being said I still prefer him to the alternative. He still chooses to caucus with the dems so at least there are bills to debate.

That being said I still prefer him to the alternative. He still chooses to caucus with the dems so at least there are bills to debate.

He chooses to caucus with the Dems because if he changed party affiliation his career in WV politics would be over practically overnight. Between incumbency and name recognition, he ensures he’ll keep getting reelected in WV as a Dem because “He’s the only guy who can win.”

If he changed party affiliation to Republican, it’s almost guaranteed that McConnell would spend the next 3 years (and change) either prevent anything from getting done or even ramming through Repub bills just to fuck over Biden’s presidency in anticipation of winning back the WH in 2024. Which means Manchin would lose all his Dem support for any future runs, which would not only preclude a run for governor but also mean he’d likely be gone after losing a primary bid in 2025.

He’s right where he wants to be right now: Being the spoiler vote in order to maintain his reputation as a “centrist.”

It’s really sick. Especially The Bishops side. I cringed the couple of times I listened to it. However, the gig with them was one of my legendary memories. I was supposed to get a copy of the video but the bass player had a car accident and the tape got lost. They were selling glow-in-the-dark T-shirts that all sold out before the gig was over so I didn’t get one. The extremely drunk club owner gave me the sweaty T-shirt off his back after he’d been dancing all night. He was kind of hunky without a shirt…

The Repub worldview is that joblessness is a voluntary act: If you’re not employed, it’s because you chose not to get a job and thus you’re not worth helping. In the same vein, if you are employed and struggle to make ends meet, then you’re simply not working hard enough and thus it’s still your fault.

Of course, when your party is majority old white men who are worth millions because they either were born to the purple or married into it, it’s no wonder they think anybody who’s not independently wealthy is a useless sponge.

To be fair to Antoinette, the original (alleged) quote was “let them eat brioche,” which is not a type of cake but a very buttery type of bread usually eaten by the noble classes because butter was a luxury in 18th century France. Even if the quote were real, it’s less one of malice or disinterest and more like a modern politician who’s never stepped foot in a grocery store acting shocked that you can’t just run down to the local bodega for a jar of premium caviar.

This isn’t that. It’s a first-term senator dumping her career in a ditch and putting two shots in the back of its head.

Happy Friday Lizards!

I am on the mend after a nasty fall on Tuesday night. Nothing broken, but definitely pulled muscles and a tendon. Just when I was prepping to begin drawing, sewing and making stuff again after a long pause. I was almost feeling good enough after over a year in pain to go out and begin yard and gardening stuff (with a little assist here and there), but not now. My right shoulder on the back side and my rib cage on that side are sore as hell. No bruising, I think wearing my heavy winter jacket saved me from worse injury. But damn it hurts a lot sometimes. I have edibles, and ibuprofen, and a heating pad and ice packs, which are helpful. I was actually able to drive to pick up a grocery store order today so that is progress, but it’s going to take a bit to get back to where I’m not in serious pain a few times a day.

I hope you all are well and figuring out how to stay safe and sane in all the madness. It’s really isn’t easy so I think it’s ok to give yourself a little hug for making it through another week, and a treat this weekend if you can. I keep missing so much happening here because real life calls, but I do think about all of you here daily, I miss this place. I read threads when I can but replying and hanging out is hard. So, big hugs all around and I hope I keep reading about more and more of us getting vaccinated and putting life back on the mend.

Sinema should be dragged endlessly for this alone after her vote on the minimum wage:

When her stepfather lost his job and the bank foreclosed on their home, the family lived for three years in an abandoned gas station. Sinema has said that for two years they had no toilet or electricity while living there. She later recalled, “My stepdad built a bunk bed for me and my sister. We separated our bunk bed from the kitchen with one of those big chalkboards on rollers. I knew that was weird. A chalkboard shouldn’t be a wall. A kitchen should have running water.”

Sinema is playing the fool. If she thinks she can gain some sort of help from the Republicans for whatever her pet issues are that she intends on bringing to the fore this term, she is deluded.

This deeply stinks of shenanigans by McConnell. He probably sweet talked her by promising to not seriously support whatever Arizona wingnut runs against her next time.

But McConnell will likely be dead (or at least retired) by that time.

And Sinema will find support from Democrats in her state drying up rapidly if she tries to play all footsies with Republicans.

I’m not a big fan of Shoe0nHead’s “alt-right” form of allegedly progressive politics, with her millions of followers on YouTube.

She was a Bernie supporter who has a tendency to drag everything Democrats try to do.

RationalWiki has a snarky article about her:

June Nicole Lapine (1991-), better known as Shoe0nHead is a YouTube commentator and political grifter who criticizes feminism and Tumblr (“SJW”) culture.

While seemingly identifying with anti-feminist Youtube at-large, and espousing mainly anti-feminist views, she also shies away from the label ‘anti-feminist’, and has preferred the label, “egalitarian” instead, and self-describes as a social democrat. Her extensive history of cover for totally-not-racists, videos with literal white supremacists and so on, may not accord with the label “egalitarian.”

Lapine is a part of a growing number of popular Youtubers who claim to lean left/liberal and anti-feminist at the same time (something mostly unheard of from 2008-2016), with Ethan Klein and The Amazing Atheist being other examples. As of October 2020, Lapine’s main channel has over 1.54 million subscribers and 120 million views.

The thing about the minimum wage vote today was that it was a free vote! It needed 60 votes and wasn’t gonna get it. $15 an hour is popular! It’s a lay-up. If you’re voting against it, it’s for reasons other than clear-eyed, ruthless fidelity to optimal political messaging.

As long as there is a 50-50 split in the Senate, we have no choice: Manchin and Sinema control the agenda and losing either one to the GOP means that the Biden policies are dead and Biden judges are dead. And as much as I like him, I wouldn’t rely on Chris Hayes as the ultimate authority on optimal political messaging; after all, wasn’t he a Bernie supporter in 2020?
