I’m almost positive there’s a Sean Hannity rant about the Lorax from the Bush years. It would be nice to find that and throw it in his face next time he yammers about Dr. Seuss.

Catholic group opposes Colorado bill that would give child sex abuse survivors the ability to sue their abuser at any time (Denver Post)

Buried in the article is the note the Boy Scouts are also opposed to the bills.

The renewed push to eliminate the statute of limitations for lawsuits against alleged child sex abusers saw an unanimous Senate vote this week — a vote Wheat Ridge Democratic Sen. Jessie Danielson called “historic.” But the bipartisan bill, which now heads to a House committee, doesn’t apply to civil claims that will have already expired by the time it takes effect, which was a sticking point over constitutionality concerns last year.

That’s why lawmakers have introduced a second (also bipartisan) bill to create a new cause of action to allow people abused as children to sue public and private institutions like churches, schools and the Boy Scouts for past abuse that occurred under their watch. Both the Colorado Catholic Conference and the Boy Scouts, which is also facing abuse allegations in the state, are opposed.

The Bernie faction strikes again. There were a few responses on the thread critical of her and Bernie - e.g.:

Sanders promised he could rally the votes.
He failed.
Kinda like when you worked with him on a presidential campaign.

Fortunately, the Bernie people failed to stop Biden’s election but too many are still trying to undermine his administration. Writing laws and getting them passed are complicated processes — there have always been compromises that leave many legislators unsatisfied but as they say, we cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

If I were on twitter, this old socialist would probably post something like this from Reddit:

Adam Smith believed in a minimum wage equal to twice what it would cost one working person to raise a family with two kids. Did you know that? do YOU know who Adam Smith REALLY was?

AN INQUIRY INTO THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF THE WEALTH OF NATIONS.

By Adam Smith CHAPTER VIII. OF THE WAGES OF LABOUR. gutenberg.org “A man must always live by his work, and his wages must at least be sufficient to maintain him. They must even upon most occasions be somewhat more, otherwise it would be impossible for him to bring up a family, and the race of such workmen could not last beyond the first generation. Mr Cantillon seems, upon this account, to suppose that the lowest species of common labourers must everywhere earn at least double their own maintenance, in order that, one with another, they may be enabled to bring up two children; the labour of the wife, on account of her necessary attendance on the children, being supposed no more than sufficient to provide for herself: But one half the children born, it is computed, die before the age of manhood. The poorest labourers, therefore, according to this account, must, one with another, attempt to rear at least four children, in order that two may have an equal chance of living to that age. But the necessary maintenance of four children, it is supposed, may be nearly equal to that of one man. The labour of an able-bodied slave, the same author adds, is computed to be worth double his maintenance; and that of the meanest labourer, he thinks, cannot be worth less than that of an able-bodied slave. Thus far at least seems certain, that, in order to bring up a family, the labour of the husband and wife together must, even in the lowest species of common labour, be able to earn something more than what is precisely necessary for their own maintenance; but in what proportion, whether in that above-mentioned, or many other, I shall not take upon me to determine. “

he also believed high rewards for labor were a sure sign of increasing national wealth. “The liberal reward of labour, therefore, as it is the necessary effect, so it is the natural symptom of increasing national wealth. The scanty maintenance of the labouring poor, on the other hand, is the natural symptom that things are at a stand, and their starving condition, that they are going fast backwards. “

he also believed in challenging monopolies and what we would call today “class warfare” from the same chapter:

“We rarely hear, it has been said, of the combinations of masters, though frequently of those of workmen. But whoever imagines, upon this account, that masters rarely combine, is as ignorant of the world as of the subject. Masters are always and everywhere in a sort of tacit, but constant and uniform, combination, not to raise the wages of labour above their actual rate.”

Of course, this socialist has actually read Smith. Most “free enterprise” asshats haven’t.

The reality is that Manchin hates this bill. The bill he wants is the $600B “bipartisan” one that he endorsed alongside his buddy Susan Collins. That bill not only spent less, but the spending was “targeted” to those people he thought actually needed it. And it had the bonus of having buy-in by Senate Repubs, so he’d be able to polish those “centrist” bonafides by telling folks that this was a “bipartisan” bill.

You can hear it in his statement about the “deal” made tonight, he’s convinced that this is all gonna blow over by summer and the country’s gonna roar back to life by the fall. That having enough vaccine doses by May means everybody will be vaccinated by then and we’ll start moving back to full employment by no latter than next winter. So that if you don’t have a job by September, then he’ll be convinced that you’re just not looking hard enough.

Just in case you don’t know, minimum wage is not a free market policy, it’s against free market. In a free market min wage will be determined by supply and demand of jobs not by government policy.

Conservatives like to talk about the dignity of labor and about the American Dream of providing a better life for one’s family.

But in the end, to them labor is just another business expense to be minimized and workers are no different than paper clips, toner or copier paper…

Of course, this socialist has actually read Smith. Most “free enterprise” asshats haven’t.

He also believed in a progressive income tax:

The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. A tax upon house-rents, therefore, would in general fall heaviest upon the rich; and in this sort of inequality there would not, perhaps, be anything very unreasonable. It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

re: #89 Dread Pirate Ron

With the slimmest of majorities, the Democrats have to be wise in regards to choosing upon which hill to die.

Bernie and the others who wanted to tack on the minimum wage increase to a general pandemic relief bill were not going to help get things done.

I’m not sure it’s even that much of a strategic advantage to prioritize minimum wage issues right now.

The top item has to be a voters right bill, a law that will counter the GOP’s effort to disenfranchise people.

The second item has to be to get dark money out of elections.

The third item should, IMO, be about health care and reimagining American health care spending.

Raising the minimum wage dramatically will encounter blow-back from not just the usual troglodytes that are the funders and base of the GOP.

Many small business will push back, even those who socially are otherwise “progressive” (e.g. believers in non-discrimination laws, health care funding, etc.)

The Democratic majority in the Senate hangs by a thread. A single Democratic Senator who falls ill and has to retire, or dies in office, could end the entire Democratic agenda for several years.

As such, I think Biden and the Democrats in general need to spend their political capital on voting rights. That may be all that can be done before the next election.

“but there were 7 other Democrats AND 50 REPUBLICANS who voted against the minimum wage increase”

Ugh, idiotic framing. They voted against including it in this package, not against it per se. This happened because some of them, maybe just one of them, are also against it per se, but probably fewer than 7.

However one chooses to spin it, the fact remains that there did not exist at any time in the life of this bill 50 Senate Dem votes in favor of a $15 minimum wage hike.

And that, had Schumer and the WH listened to the louder critics and overruled the parliamentarian’s ruling on its inclusion, we would be watching in horror as this bill went down in flames.

A few Democrats, in this case Manchin and it seems Sinema, and all of the Republicans think we should have a way smaller bill because they don’t understand actual economics.

Conan’s sex
There were conflicting reports on Conan’s sex following his reveal to the public. Newsweek initially reported that the dog is female, but the magazine later issued a correction which said Conan is male. RTL Nieuws reported that Conan was trained by a company in Best, Netherlands before being transported to the United States, and a man identified as his former owner and trainer was quoted as saying: “It is a five year old male. It is a very good dog.”[10] On November 25, 2019, a White House official said the dog is female before issuing a correction, saying Conan is in fact male.[11][12] The next day, defense officials confirmed with Stars and Stripes that Conan was male.[13] At the same time, a U.S. defense official disputed this and told ABC News that Conan is female, but ABC’s report was retracted a short time later with multiple officials saying they had verified that Conan is male.[14]

The United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has contested a Freedom of Information Act request for records related to Conan’s sex. SOCOM states that it can “neither confirm nor deny the existence or non existence of records,” but if records exist, they would be a national security secret.[15]

But that’s irrelevant. The GOP works in lockstep (the one exception being the failure to repeal the ACA) when it comes to legislation to help the rich and powerful and to harm minorities. Bush 43 did not allow his loss in popular vote to affect his policies. Remember Will Rogers famous words: “I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.”. The bill has passed the Senate!! Now let’s hope the progressives in the House don’t stop it.

I think the rescue plan has passed, 50-49. I hadn’t been listening but there was a round of applause.

Could have been for Ron Johnson falling from the balcony.

News from this neck of the woods.

Six police officers injured in anti-Corona demonstration [Swedish]. And as usual, right-wingers are involved [Swedish]…

I’m just waiting for the big cluster caused by 600-1,000 people without masks etc…

There has been frustration expressed about Manchin, but if he wasn’t who he is, his seat would probably be held by a Republican, and no Covid relief would’ve passed the Senate today, or ever again.

Here’s why you can truly hate Manchin:

I’m favoriting this based on the pushback I got yesterday for criticizing Manchin for the piece of shit he is.

That amendment was terrible, and it failed. There would be no Covid relief without Manchin.

This.

What we need to do is stop worrying about Manchin as such and work on Murkowski to, not actually become a Democrat but perhaps call herself independent and give her enough to get her vote regularly.

Depends. Sometimes it’s just typing your name in and acknowledging that it represents your signature. Sometimes you physically sign on the screen (using a mouse or your finger on a touchpad) and it inserts your signature as an image.

I’ve had to sign on a blank piece of paper, hold that up to the computer’s camera, take the image, then embed it in the e-document.

Seems easy enough to fake, but that is what was required.

I had a similar question at my credit union. I have an IRA I need to start drawing down and they sent me to a third party that authenticates your signature, or offers you a selection of your name rendered in differing cursive styles.

I HATE using the mouse or finger on a touchpad — it’s not as though the result bears any resemblance to your actual signature. Almost anyone could forge a signature that way since it would appear just as similar as your real signature.

If you have adobe acrobat, you should be able to either type or use your mouse to write your name in a signature block for that purpose.

Finger on my iPhone I can do pretty well at. Using a mouse on the PC, though… Not even a resemblance.

I have all sorts of high end tricks, but the one I think is easiest is to manually write it out and then take a photograph of it with your phone, and just paste that into documents.

(I can get fancy and use Photoshop to gussy it up, but the pasted photo generally works).

Manchin’s $150,000 cap on income to use the tax deduction for the unemployment benefits is not a criminal offense. And the value of the package remains at about 1.9 trillion. So unless some House Bernie fanatics kill this legislation, Biden will have at least one significant accomplishment to help real people. I just wish there were some way to get HR 1 through the Senate or we may never seen another Democratic president in our lifetime — even when they win 10 million more votes than the opposition.

Trumpster comments on HR 1 voting rights legislation reveal that the modern GOP would have fully supported Bull Connor in the 1960’s.

[Embedded content]

It is clear that the more restrictions on voting, the more that it pleases them. They do want to see this as a white Eurocentric nation, with any others living here being quiet and submissive.

Guess they’ve never read Art 1, Sec 4.

And the limitation there on choosing of Senators was clearly lifted by the 17th Amendment.
