Keith Jarrett, Berlin 2009: An Incredible Solo Version of “My Song” [AUDIO]

Music • Views: 22,682

YouTube

I’ve always considered “My Song” one of Keith Jarrett’s most beautiful compositions. It doesn’t even really fit into the jazz genre; it’s more like a folk song. The evocative, affecting melody is simple but still surprising.

And this 2009 solo performance of the piece in Berlin takes it to another level. As far as I know this version is not included on any official album.

From the last thread, I see that Sen. Mitt Romney is upset that the relief bill did not include advances for car elevator repairs.

Concerning the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, Governor Pete Ricketts in his weekly Covid updates told people they should be sure to consult with their faith leaders before getting that particular vaccine.

That means all the faith leaders with their hair on fire over “babeeee parts” in vaccines are going to advise their parishioners against the vaccine.

I would really like to pry religion out of science and government, but what I want doesn’t matter.

The intro to this version of My Song is just blowing me away. He starts out in a completely different key with a melody that sort of echoes the My Song melody, slowly builds it up then magically shifts into the real key of the piece with its recognizable intro section. It’s pure genius.

Never heard of that band before (someone in that thread said they are the most important band of the XXI Century). Looked them up. They seem to be popular, let’s see how the support for libertarian fascists like Andy Ngo works out for them.

NYT Columnist David Brooks Resigns From Nonprofit After More Evidence Of Conflicts Emerges (Buzzfeed)

David Brooks has resigned from his position at the Aspen Institute following reporting by BuzzFeed News about conflicts of interest between the star New York Times columnist and funders of a program he led for the think tank.

Eileen Murphy, a spokesperson for the Times, said in a statement that editors approved Brooks’s involvement with Aspen in 2018, when he launched a project called Weave. But current editors weren’t aware he was receiving a salary for Weave.

“The current Opinion editors were unaware of this arrangement and have concluded that holding a paid position at Weave presents a conflict of interest for David in writing about the work of the project, its donors or the broader issues it focuses on,” Murphy said.

She said Brooks resigned his position at Aspen and will remain a volunteer for the project.

That was over their thirteen star and crescent moon logo. After decades of that (and it wasn’t just evangelicals; most churches went after them over it), they removed the logo from their retail products but retained it on their bulk packaging.

Religious people are still going after them for it, because they didn’t completely remove it.

Back in the 80s some religious nuts were screaming that Procter and Gamble was a satanic concern.

In the category of “religion poisons everything” (including children at the Idaho state capitol today):

Proctor and Gamble is Owned by Satanists (Utah State University, Student Folklore Fieldwork, November 28, 2017)

While I was working at Proctor and Gamble, there was the story that the founder of the company worshipped Satan. They said that the P&G logo with the sun, moon, and stars was satanic. Apparently, he talked about it on Phil Donahue’s talk show, but I think that was just part of the story too. One day I was talking to my mom on the phone and she had heard the story and asked me about it. She was worried, but told me that I should try to make some money then get a better job [laughs]. I though it was funny that my mom thought it was ok for me to work for the devil if I could make a little money doing it

Believer Clings to Procter & Gamble Rumor (Tulsa World, updated February 23, 2019, disconnect your brain to read this article):

I don’t believe your denial of the Procter & Gamble Satan rumor, because some of them have heard the president and the owner on these shows saying they give profits to Satanist Church. If you claim this is untrue, I challenge you to print a copy of a letter from Phil Donahue or Merv Griffin denying these people were ever on there. - anonymous believer.

According to a letter sent out by the producers of “Donahue,” the people who say they have seen a P&G executive or “owner” on “Donahue” are “either lying or hallucinating.”

Procter & Gamble Not In League With The Devil (Industry Week, March 20, 2007)

Procter and Gamble does not worship Satan, according to a court ruling that revolves around a decades-old urban myth targeting the world’s biggest consumer goods company. P&G said March 19 it had won $19.25 million in a civil suit brought against four former distributors of direct-selling company Amway who were accused of spreading false rumors.

On March 16 the Salt Lake City jury award represents the latest in a long line of court battles between P&G and Amway over the devil-worshipping claim, which has taken on new currency in the Internet era. “This is about protecting our reputation,” said Jim Johnson, P&G chief legal officer.

I wonder where Betsy DeVos fits into this, since P&G repeatedly sues Amway over this.

Back in the Seventies, McDonalds was the target, and more recently Liz Claiborne. As we can see from the effectiveness of the McDonalds boycott, the company was brought to its knees and crushed.

What’s True

The singer in this video, Sailor Sabol, performed the national anthem on the first day of CPAC 2021.
What’s False

However, the portion of this video featuring a befuddled piano accompanist was created as a joke, and did not air at CPAC. Claims that the singer was “Ted Cruz’s dog walker” and that this performance occurred just before former U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech are false.

A WSJ IPhone message this afternoon referencedan Opinion piece with the following description: Has Governor Ron DeSantis been vindicated? What can we learn from Florida’s Covid success story?

Of course this is an opinion piece and therefore needs to be taken with a pound of salt. And since I don’t subscribe to the publication, I don’t have access to the entire article.

I believe the basic argument was: Florida has a much older population than most states and therefore would be expected to exhibit a higher overall death rate, but the death rate is in the middle. The economy was opened and is much healthier than other states that were more serious about lockdowns, while the mortality is lower than states that instituted statewide measures. DeSantis did listen to several experts on how best to handle the disease for nursing home patients and apparently implemented a strategy based on the observation that 80% of deaths are among seniors over 65 and therefore if the state focuses on the best treatment for the elderly, it will significantly reduce mortality without needing to adopt stringent limitations on businesses.

Anyone from Florida have more insight? (or can read the entire article?) Are the Florida mortality statistics reliable?

The House should pack as much in as possible, then, as with the Covid package, the Democrats will negotiate among themselves to see what can pass. Even Manchin knows coal is a dying industry. There were big articles this week about how the bankruptcy of Black Jewel Mining, which wants to abandon hundreds of unreclaimed mine sites, is a sign of what is coming. The bill should include large sums for Appalachian development to win Manchin’s vote.

Anyone from Florida have more insight? (or can read the entire article?) Are the Florida mortality statistics reliable?

They are so reliable they fired and then arrested their IT specialist for publishing the real statistics. (I was out watching “WandaVision”)

Vindication for Ron DeSantis (Wall Street Journal, yesterday)

The media vilified him for rejecting harsh lockdowns. But Florida’s Covid-19 numbers are better than California’s or New York’s, and its economy thrives.

In the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed strict lockdown policies—many still in place—and became the media’s golden boy. “The governor of New York’s morning news conferences have become part of the country’s new daily rhythm,” the Washington Post’s Style section gushed in March 2020. “He’s the strongman who can admit he’s wrong. He speaks fluently about the facts. He worries about his mother, and by extension, yours, too.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis took a different approach and was pilloried. He was among the first to lift his state lockdown, adopting something resembling Sweden’s strategy of protecting the vulnerable while keeping businesses and schools open. “Florida Man Leads His State to the Morgue,” read a June headline in the New Republic. “Ron DeSantis is the latest in a long line of Republicans who made the state a plutocratic dystopia. Now he’s letting its residents die to save the plutocrats.”

A year after the virus hit the U.S., Mr. Cuomo’s luster has faded, and Mr. DeSantis can claim vindication. The Sunshine State appears to have weathered the pandemic better than others like New York and California, which stayed locked down harder and longer.

Mortality data bear out this conclusion. The Covid death risk increases enormously with each decade of age. More than 80% of Covid deaths in the U.S. have occurred among seniors over 65. They make up a larger share of Florida’s population than any other state except Maine. Based on demographics, Florida’s per-capita Covid death rate would be expected to be one of the highest in the country.

They are ignoring of course New York was one of the first places hit, when no one knew what to do about the virus.

The article says Florida is in the middle of the pack on per capita deaths (according to Worldometer, that is correct, Florida ranks 27th). It ignores other states which have lower rates which imposed mask orders (such as Wyoming and Hawai’i, which score better than Florida, or those which did not such as North and South Dakota, which score far worse than Florida). They also ignore cities (higher rate) over rural areas (lower rate).

It depends on how important killing their workers are to them.

More importantly, how concerned they are about the reliability of the power grid. The companies probably figure their employees will all soon be vaccinated so the pandemic will no longer be a major consideration by the end of the summer. In any case, their workers can be told to follow CDC recommendations to limit their exposure.

Certainly states in the northeast were hit much harder when they were the first victims of the initial wave from Europe and Trump and his CDC were useless in providing guidance. By the time COVID really hit Florida, there was more information on how best to deal with residents in nursing homes, and it was there that DeSantis may have taken appropriate measures to reduce mortality.

I tend to compare statistics with Illinois and it seems that recently Illinois has been doing much better in case positivity rate , with a positivity rate of 2.19% compared to Florida’s 6.4%, in new cases as a percentage of population, and in current mortality rate, though total mortality rate since the beginning of the pandemic is still higher here.

Texas health care is fine for those employed by large companies that provide comprehensive insurance benefits; as to lax safety regulations, it would be surprising if the companies relaxed their internal standard to meet lower Texas requirements, but that’s certainly possible. Texas tends to have more industrial accidents but that currently has played a minor role in affecting the well-being of most residents.

And though we were hit much later in the Nebraska Panhandle, we still have a positivity rate of 7.5%, down from the peak of 64.4% on November 1. When Wyoming, only a few miles away, hit a positivity rate of 16.1% on January 12, Gov. Gordon imposed a statewide mask mandate, and that dramatically dropped to 4.4%.

Ricketts announces ‘Meat on the Menu Day’ in response to Colorado’s ‘MeatOUT Day’ (Omaha World-Herald)

LINCOLN — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is going toe-to-toe, or perhaps it’s fork-to-fork, with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis over eating meat.

On Friday, Ricketts announced that he had designated March 20 as “Meat on the Menu Day” in Nebraska. He is encouraging people to buy and eat beef, pork, chicken, lamb or another kind of meat on that day.

He said he was doing so to highlight the importance of meat in a good diet as well as to provide an opportunity to support Nebraska farmers and ranchers. Nebraska is a major beef-producing state and also has a number of hog and chicken operations.

“While meat is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, there are radical anti-agriculture activists that are working to end meat production and our way of life here in Nebraska,” Ricketts said.

A Philly landlord is trying to evict tenants after his property manager stole their rent money (Philadelphia Inquirer)

When Tyler Shaide and Sophia DiLorenzo came across the Facebook listing for an apartment for rent in North Philadelphia, it felt like a breath of fresh air.

After struggling with rent payments and moving out of their previous unit last month, the couple had found the Moscow & Monica apartment complex. Its new units could be leased month to month, property manager Frank Sanders told them, and didn’t require a credit check.

“He said it was a Black-owned business looking to help people out who have poor credit scores,” said DiLorenzo, 25. “We thought we found somewhere we can let the dust settle, continue to work on ourselves and our stability, get our credit up.”

They met Sanders at the building and agreed to rent a one-bedroom unit. Because the complex was new, Sanders said he was finalizing the lease with his boss, but would send it over right away. They gave Sanders a $750 security deposit, and moved in Feb. 20 without signing a lease.

Just a week after settling in, the couple returned home to find the building’s owner, Gagandeep Lakhmna, in the lobby. He wanted to know who they were and why they were living in his complex.

Sanders had allegedly hidden more than a dozen tenants’ occupancy from his boss and had been pocketing their rent payments.

In addition to first responders, nurses, and physicians, the pandemic is taking toll on another class of hospital workers: chaplains.

Colorado ‘last responders’ exhausted after coronavirus year (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Maria McLain Cox deals in uncertainty.

The longtime hospital chaplain has been with patients through chemotherapy and new diagnoses. She comforts couples who have lost infants, the families of stroke victims and people who were rushed to the emergency room and didn’t survive.

There are no words McLain Cox can say to ward off difficulty, or make it pass more quickly. But she can offer her presence. She talks to the worried and grieving through what they’re feeling, or they might sit together silently. She might offer a hug. Some reach out to hold her hand as they pray. Sometimes it’s a Coke from the vending machine that forges a connection.

But then came March 2020, and the realization that the mysterious and virulent coronavirus was here in Colorado. UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital filled with a palpable anxiety as patients arrived sick with a highly-contagious illness that doctors didn’t yet understand. As the facility entered lockdown mode, many patients said goodbye to their families, not knowing if they would see or touch each other again.

Across the state, from small-town hospice facilities to big metropolitan hospitals, clinicians and spiritual counselors trained to offer choices and dignity through illness and at the end of life are learning a new way of giving grace.

Hospitals in Colorado are still dealing with asshats who either don’t believe the disease is real, or do not take proper precautions.

When [Chaplain Ryan] Wooley [of a Ft. Collins hospital] got to the ICU waiting room, a nurse was explaining to the man’s two siblings what it might look and sound like as they removed the breathing tube. Wooley stood with them outside the hospital room for what must have been 10 minutes as they watched the nurse conduct the procedure through a window. The siblings held hands, watching the pause and measure of their brother’s every breath. Shortly after, he died.

Wooley walked with them back to the waiting room, where they talked about what happened. Just a week earlier, the siblings had been contacted by a palliative care nurse and informed of their brother’s poor condition, and felt some relief to have been able to make the visit, Wooley said. Before they left, one of them took Wooley’s hand.

“He said, ‘Seeing that this has actually taken my loved one — I just didn’t believe before this week that COVID was real. And now I do,’” Wooley recalled. “And I helped them get to the elevator, and they left.”

The comment left him dumbfounded and angry at some people’s denial of a disease whose damage had left him to spend nearly seven months comforting families and supporting exhausted hospital staff.

Via the Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune, German news about political profiteering during the pandemic.

BERLIN (AP) — A lawmaker with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party said Sunday he will give up his seat in parliament and leave politics after it emerged that his company profited from deals to procure masks early in the pandemic — drawing sharp criticism in an election year.

Nikolas Loebel, a backbench lawmaker with Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union, was blasted by members of his own party and opponents after it emerged Friday that a company he runs earned commissions of 250,000 euros ($298,000) from brokering contracts to buy masks. Saying that he should have been “more sensitive,” Loebel admitted that he had made a mistake and gave up his seat on parliament’s foreign affairs committee.

That wasn’t enough for critics — particularly as his home state of Baden-Wuerttemberg elects a new regional legislature on March 14. A national election in which Germans will choose a new parliament, and determine who succeeds Merkel, follows on Sept. 26.

Susanne Eisenmann, the CDU candidate for governor in Baden-Wuerttemberg, told news magazine Der Spiegel that “it is unacceptable for parliamentarians to enrich themselves in this serious crisis.”

On Sunday, Loebel said he will leave the Union bloc’s group in parliament immediately and give up his seat at the end of August. He apologized and said he won’t run in the September election, the dpa news agency reported.

Biden to mark ‘Bloody Sunday’ by signing voting-rights order (Rapid City, SD Journal)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden plans to sign an executive order directing federal agencies to take a series of steps to promote voting access, a move that comes as congressional Democrats press for a sweeping voting and elections bill to counter efforts to restrict voting access.

Biden will announce the order during a recorded address on the 56th commemoration of “Bloody Sunday,” the 1965 incident in which some 600 civil rights activists were viciously beaten by state troopers as they tried to march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama.

“Every eligible voter should be able to vote and have it counted,” Biden says in a script of his recorded remarks to Sunday’s Martin and Coretta King Unity Breakfast.

Biden’s order includes several modest provisions. It directs federal agencies to expand access to voter registration and election information, calls on the heads of federal agencies to come up with plans to give federal employees time off to vote or volunteer as nonpartisan poll workers, and proscribes an overhaul of the government’s vote.gov website, according to an administration official who briefed reporters.

re: #65 Hecuba’s daughter

(or can read the entire article?) Are the Florida mortality statistics reliable?

he’s screwing the rest of us

he’s playing favorites and fundraising off of the favoritism

Florida’s DeSantis faces criticism over Covid-19 vaccination clinics in upscale communities

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is facing bipartisan criticism and a call for a federal investigation after the state set up invitation-only Covid-19 vaccination clinics in at least two upscale communities.

Florida, where demand for vaccination has exceeded supply since the state started administering it in late December, is facing statewide vaccine distribution challenges.

and they’re lying about the numbers

Florida blocked public access to COVID data. Now there’s even more it wants to keep secret from taxpayers

For a whole year, as Floridians suffered and died by the tens of thousands from COVID-19, Florida’s government routinely kept the public from seeing detailed information about the course and intensity of the pandemic, often until the trend line had changed to better match the governor’s sunnier version.

Let’s be clear: The information we’re talking about doesn’t fall under the umbrella of national security or nuclear codes, exceptions any thinking person would agree are reasonable. No, we’re talking about the kind of information that might be critical to helping Floridians gauge the risk to themselves and their families in a pandemic — no small thing at all.

Florida adds red tape for medically vulnerable while COVID vaccines go unused in Miami

With 57% of Miami-Dade County’s 65-and-older population having received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, a newly opened federal vaccination site sat with ample unused supply on Thursday, even as access expanded, albeit slowly, and with shifting but stringent rules.

Public health experts say it’s a sign that the state, and particularly Gov. Ron DeSantis, isn’t moving fast enough to make more people eligible for the vaccine. They also say the governor’s latest executive order requiring medically vulnerable people under the age of 65 to get a physician’s slip prescribing the COVID vaccine adds needless red tape that will keep uninsured and low-income people from their place in line.

We check Publix, Walgreens CVS, Wal-Mart every single day. They are internet only, ticketmaster style.

We also check the county system… That’s an automated call in only and wait for a call back. Their system rejects her birthdate.

And the state registration system? Ha!

My fave local FM station runs a locally-produced news/sports program that focuses on MN issues every Sunday morning. It’s usually a pretty balanced program, but his morning their last piece of the show was about Twins spring training in Fort Myers, Florida and their “guest” focused on how much Minnesotans will enjoy the experience of coming down and enjoying the fully open restaurants and unfettered social atmosphere of Fort Myers. I don’t think that the word Covid was mentioned even once.

“Come down! Have fun! Spend money! Attend a game! Get sick! Take it back to MN!”

The station, to their credit, immediately ran a very well done Covid awareness PSA right after the interview. One of the station’s clients is an indoor water park in western WI, and the station almost always runs one of their Covid PSAs right before or after that ad. I love that station.

My team (the Red Sox) trains in Fort Myers and shares the town with the Twins, though in separate facilities. Plenty of virus to share.

re: #148 Dangerman

Floridians are outdoors much more in winter than those in the cold parts of the country. It is pretty clear that being in a closed room with the infected is a very high risk to others in the room. Sitting on a park bench outside - not so much.

Look at the Worldometer statistics. Florida is right above the US mean for cases/1M, California is just a tiny bit higher. But Florida has more deaths/1M than California. This is likely for two reasons: Florida has more old people/1M, and it is very likely that Florida has under-reported cases.

So yeah, nothing to crow about there Florida. Indeed, with the fact that one can spend most of the day outdoors in Florida, the proper thing to have done would have been to close down as many closed-in areas as possible.

From washingtonpost.com:

President Biden’s stimulus package, which passed the Senate on Saturday, represents one of the most generous expansions of aid to the poor in recent history, while also showering thousands or, in some cases, tens of thousands of dollars on Americans families navigating the coronavirus pandemic.

The roughly $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which only Democrats supported, spends most of the money on low-income and middle-class Americans and state and local governments, with very little funding going toward companies. The plan is one of the largest federal responses to a downturn Congress has enacted and economists estimate it will boost growth this year to the highest level in decades and reduce the number of Americans living in poverty by a third.

This round of aid enjoys wide support across the country, polls show, and it is likely to be felt quickly by low- and moderate-income Americans who stand to receive not just larger checks than before, but money from expanded tax credits, particularly geared toward parents; enhanced unemployment; rental assistance; food aid and health insurance subsidies…

The total numbers are staggering. Cumulatively, the government will hand out $2.2 trillion to workers and families between the relief passed last year and this latest bill, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan group. That’s equivalent to what the government spends annually on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid combined…

The Democratic stimulus package also provides significant funding for vaccine distribution and state and local governments. Business and health leaders say getting most Americans vaccinated is key to the economic recovery. But most of the attention on the bill has focused on its overall price tag and the payments that are set to go to about 150 million American households.

The latest stimulus will reduce poverty by a third, lifting nearly 13 million Americans out of it, according to an analysis by Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy. Black Americans, Hispanic Americans and poor families with children are set to benefit the most. Child poverty would be reduced by more than half, the researchers predict…

Got my wife her Fauci Ouchie yesterday (she said she didn’t feel it though she’s got some site tenderness as there’s an alien substance in the muscle tissue). We went to the mass vaccination site in San Mateo - drive thru - probably 400 cars there when we arrived(maybe 1/3 in the 15 min post shot zone), and an orange cone serpentine pattern. Took us about 20 minutes to get to the event center, where they had maybe 20 lanes of nurses…so another 10-15 before she got her shot. Then we were directed into a column of vehicles where we sat for 15 minutes before someone walked down our row and asked for a thumbs up.

Best part for me was the people doing traffic control were thanking every car as it left. Super good vibe. Looking forward to my turn.

by the way, for those who occasionally wander over to rawstory, they’ve completely mischaracterized a Manchin interview to make it sound like he’s digging in on the filibuster. Yeah, thanks for posting this.

It’s not just shameful but likely illegal and unenforceable. The children are not signatories on the rent contract and they should not be defendants in an eviction suit.

But this happens everywhere. Here’s the Texas Observer talking about how eviction records aren’t sealed, so it’s a black mark on rental records.

Evangelical Twitter has been losing its shit over Critical Race Theory. One of the bastions of Evangelical Twitter, The Gospel Coalition, posted a piece of garbage article trying to take down Ibram X. Kendi and then it went on from there. The crazy I’ve seen…oh, CRT is destroying churches (can’t name churches, not even the predominantly Black churches that are leaving the SBC because the seminary presidents are all freaking out about CRT).

So we have this.

I’m sure Kyle J. Howard probably isn’t so happy with me distracting the discussion from CRT and the SBC being asshats about it, but hey, let’s just remind people what the SBC doesn’t do…like protect kids from their sexual predator pastors!!!

Also, some of the allegedly progressive Evangelicals (they’re still anti-abortion, though) are whining that Biden didn’t “do something” about abortion, which he allegedly promised in some sort of a side deal.

I didn’t mean to rant at John Fea, but I figured that the people who are complaining read Fea and maybe they might see a woman telling them HEY YOU MIGHT WANT TO TALK TO WOMEN ABOUT ABORTION INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT US.

re: #168 The Pie Overlord!

Zedushka & I are going for our 2nd Pfizer shot tomorrow. Then, he wants to go to Florida for Passover!

I’m not changing any of my Covid habits until a couple weeks after I get the second shot. April will be my coming out month to travel although I’ll still wear a mask in public until the CDC says it’s OK to stop. I’m looking forward to not having to feel anxious about sitting down at a restaurant.

Pulpit Pimp tells his brainwashed flock that a man needs to be married to a woman just like Melania Trump.

Pulpit Pimp faces a backlash…

On Covid deniers in Canada:

(more at the Free Thinker blog at Patheos)

‘Plague rat’ pastor told: ‘Obey COVID-19 rules or stay in jail’

Yeah, the radical Neo-Calvinists here in the states are making this loser into one of their heroes for defying the government.

Along those same lines, “presuppositionalist apologist” Sye Ten Bruggencate (a huge influence on those asshats who want to execute women who have abortions over at Apologia Church) suddenly, and I do mean SUDDENLY, last week decided he was leaving the ministry and putting himself under his church leadership.

As you can see, I can’t trust the church leadership to do right, since they’re already in the middle of breaking the law regarding gatherings during a pandemic.

It’s unclear what exactly Sye did, but it appears to involve a woman not in the church. At which point, I am asking more questions, because I have serious questions about any relationship between these neo-Calvinist asshat men and any woman being consensual. Sorry, not sorry for being very suspicious.

re: #199 mmmirele

My sister was molested by a Presbyterian preacher.

Oh I know other Presbyterian Preachers who can’t keep Mr. Ding Dong in their pants. Whether it was Mom’s Orthodox Presbyterian Pulpit Pimp who scolded me because I wouldn’t “come to Jay-Zuss”. The Pimp didn’t like it when I blasted him for eating shrimp while spitting out his hatred for LGBTQI folks. And there were a couple Pimps who were caught in some “personal ministering” that just somehow wound up in a bed with a woman OR man they weren’t married to…

Just another reason why I’ll never step foot in a church.

CRT is a hard sell to American because the affront is not just about racism, but accepting a view of the self that is very much in conflict with the American fanciful slogan of “the individual”.

The hard sell: we are a reflection of our culture, and its past. We are greatly programmed by our parents. They were programmed by their parents (hence our grandparents.) And so on.

The US today is a direct result of the past. Including the slave-holding past.

And CRT goes farther, of course. It proposes that these things are so deeply rooted in our society that our laws and institutions have not escaped racism even to this day.

My own suspicion is that these things will work through time sort of like the works of Marx. Even though the know-nothing religious right cringe at the mention of Marx, the reality is that he made several useful observations and conclusions about economics in his time, that have then influenced economic theory since and have been used and abused by politicians, etc. So it will be with CRT (and its spin-offs) - over time we will find a softer acceptance of some of the ideas that have been asserted, even though some (American Christian fundamentalists) may rail against it for as long as such groups exist.

by the way, for those who occasionally wander over to rawstory, they’ve completely mischaracterized a Manchin interview to make it sound like he’s digging in on the filibuster. In reality, what he said was he was open to making filibusters tougher to pull off, which sounds like he’s open to changing senate rules to me.

If I go to Raw Story, I look for the link to the actual piece they’re summarizing, and then ignore everything that Raw Story writes about it. I open that original link and then I hit the close button a bunch of times to leave Raw Story + other garbage that’s popped up.

To me, the middle ground for the abortion debate is this:

If you want to get an abortion, you should be able to get a safe one.

If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t have one.

But one side wants to ban all abortions and the other side wants the middle ground. How would a compromise work in that respect when one side already is at the compromise position and the other wants it totally the way they want it?

re: #202 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

That’s rather what I expect to happen as well.

But you know, I’m not going to let the leadership of the SBC forget that when it comes to serious issues (and racism is one of them), they are DO NOTHINGS. It’s not just child sexual abuse either…it’s also the role of women in the church (second class) and how to treat LGBTQIA people (like sinful scum of the earth). Engrained racism is there, along with engrained sexism, enforced heterosexuality and then the child sexual abuse crisis, which is probably a combination of patriarchy, sexism, treating kids as male property etc. etc.

ETA: It was 40 years ago when I learned from a friend of mine how Marxism had been filtered through the academy and was used as one of the frameworks to examine how societies organize themselves. It wasn’t communism at all, Marxism was just a useful tool (one of many) to do that examination.

Yup.

And people should recognize CRT is looking how it’s embedded in such things as facial recognition—it’s well known that it’s far more accurate for white faces than for Black, Asian, indigenous and other POC people. You can’t support that kind of thing (or how color photography is literally centered on white skin tones).

As long as people believe (wrongly) that women who are 8 months pregnant can just wake up one morning and say “You know what? I changed my mind!” there will never be anything rational to ever come from that side. These people have not even bothered to read the law they’re so against. If they had, they would know that the state has full interest in the third trimester, and that the only women terminating pregnancies in that range are going to probably die if they go through a delivery.

The same men who demand that women have an ultrasound before an abortion should be required to have a prostate ultrasound if they want Viagra or Cialis.

Then they should be forced to have a mandatory waiting period of 48 hours before the next step…

…which is forcing them to undergo mandatory counseling about the financial responsibility of having a child and the consequences if they fail to pay their child support on time…

You can’t support that kind of thing (or how color photography is literally centered on white skin tones).

Interesting stories abound on how Fujifilm differed from Kodak was related to how Japanese are differently colored than Europeans.

Even in digital times, I believe it was Canon who created some of the “ColorStyles” (or maybe it was third party folk developing such graphs) to work better on making Japanese women appear in images as having whiter, less yellow, skin. This is a long-running deeply racist and sexist attitude in Japan (about not wanting to look too much like Chinese and other Asians.)

Not just US/EU citizens—also the Ainu (indigenous Japanese of Hokkaido) and the Koreans who were basically brought over during Japan’s military expansionist period (starting in 1910) and who are still treated as second class citizens. The Japanese government only officially recognized the Ainu as indigenous Japanese two years ago. And of course there is the ongoing fracas between Japan and South Korea over the “comfort women” (women pressed into sex service against their will) in Japan during WWII.

ETA: There are a number of statues to “comfort women” around the world and official Japan tends to get somewhat livid about them. It’s a toxic combination of xenophobia and sexism at work here.

A week ago, i changed over my Google News feed to Spanish and well, what I’ve discovered from rummaging through various Spanish (both Latin American and Spain) sources is the serious interrelated problems of drugs and cartels.

Basically, to keep track of the ongoing low-level drug war going on in Mexico, you need a freaking Pepe Silvia bulletin board. There are a number of multinational cartels and quite a few more regional and Mexico City-area cartels/gangs.

Here’s a map put together by the DEA of the different major cartels and their influence in the USA.

The map is from this Spanish picture story on Univision.

univision.com

The Sinaloa Cartel is most widespread, but from reading in various Mexican news sources, the up and coming Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacíon (CJNG) or “cartel de cuatro letras” is really causing havoc. It is absolutely not hard to understand why people are not staying in Mexico after leaving Guatemala or Honduras, because many parts of Mexico are simply not safe. Now I know the general rule with asylum seekers is they’re supposed to request asylum in the first safe place they get to, but this is the issue with Mexico. Nobody wants to admit there’s a serious low level drug/cartel war going on. Not the Mexican government, not the US government, not anybody. Hence the pressure during the Trump administration to get Mexico to take the people fleeing Honduras and Guatemala. The Biden administration is being slightly more realistic about this, but it too is not going to admit that Mexico is very problematic, even if the State Department is really advising against travel.

So I’m driving home from my night at work. I’m taking a long way home simply to try and grab some photos. Down this one back road a couple of miles from home I see a bunch of TVs, computer monitors and a handful of computer cases. I stop and check it out, just in case someone threw out something cool like a Sun or an SGI :D

Well, not quite that good but still, hidden in between the consumer grade Compaq garbage was a nice 2002 Power Mac G4. I snarf it up into the truck and trundle on home.

It’s filthy but I open the case and everything is still in it: ATI video card, 80 gb hard drive, DVD-R, one stick of RAM - 512 mb, and major win! Dual G4 1 ghz processors. Quick glance online says it supports OS 9 through 10.5.8, can take 1.5 gb of RAM. Hook up and monitor, keyboard & rodent, hit the power and get the nice deep bong a Mac person likes to hear :) It trundles away but comes up to an unwiped drive running MacOS X 10.2. If I needed them, the Photoshop and Illustrator would be nice but I really don’t need Mr Graphics Superstar Wannabe’s personal files.

So, now to find an OS for it. One of the BSD’s probably or 10.5.8 if I want to stay with the MacOS X thing. Morph OS would have been a consideration but the GeForce 4 MX video card is unsupported. Yeah, 10.5.8 to start with at least and get his files gone. A glance at Eprey shows these still get about $200 ~ $300. Might just have to consider that once I get it cleaned up a bit.

This is what we are confronting from the brainwashed GOP masses — and she lives in Illinois, not the South.

H.R.1 in Congress, if passed, will put the federal government in control of who gets to vote and how and when.
It breaks the U.S. Constitution. It will turn our country into a third world banana republic.
Is this what all you Democrat voters wanted?
It destroys all states rights as allowed by the Constitution.
States Rights is not racist. It protects all citizens from runaway federal officials who act like tyrants.
If HR 1 passes, election fraud will be institutionalized. Your votes won’t count anymore.
Contact your senators and congresspeople.
Tell them HR 1 is not what you want.
If you want your votes to count in local and federal elections, you need to tell them.

There is an army, over 74 million strong, who are eager to return this nation to the days when white property-owning males were in charge. Anyone who claims “States Rights is not racist” is either lying to herself or lying to the reader. She may not have been in DC for the insurrection, but her heart was there. And as long as so many are so easily deluded or so racist themselves, our nation remains in deep trouble. HR 1 must be passed or our nation will have only a short 4 years of sanity before being submerged in a permanent wave of authoritarianism.

I must disagree. The machine my son built at the end of his penultimate year of high school got handed down to me eventually, and was my gaming rig until the end of last year. That’s twelve years of service with storage and GPU updates along the way.
The mid range machine I built around the time we moved house is also still ticking along - with a RAM upgrade in addition to disk (gone all SSD) and video card replacements - and will be having its tenth anniversary this year.
I guess the moral of the story is, roll your own.

re: #230 Amory Blaine

before I may have thought so too, but I am forced to remember that just because the media frames a story in a certain way, doesn’t necessarily make it so.

It really could be as simple as Manchin and Sinema wanting to keep some substance version of the filibuster for forms sake and are actually open to its modification, say one of the multiple suggestions that puts the onus on those using it to actually be there for the performance, i.e. no more of this showing up once a day, lodging an objection and then doing another guest spot on Faux News. This could be in if you feel passionate enough about something being wrong, then your ass is in there making your impassioned argument. Your party supports your decision, then they must have members show up and be counted. Seems like that would put a serious crimp in the performance art that the GOP has employed to date.

When we objectively look at the changes to the 1.9T rescue act, it’s STILL 1.9 trillion. Some the amount of UI compensation was tweaked, as was the length it would be in effect, then it appears some of that savings was shunted into 800B being earmarked for homeless kids (courtesy of Sen Murkowski, who then voted against her own amendment). The volume of the bill is tremendous and as has been reported, hardly a nickle goes to the usual GOP suspects, unless you count the help going to Red States, which is still on them to use appropriately.

I’m reminded of that scene from All The President’s Men, when our intrepid reporters are hung out to dry because while the person in question was ready to name names, no one bothered to ask them the question. Considering the fecklessness of some of those in the 4th estate, I can never really be SURE that the questions that we ask ourselves in here are ever uttered by those controlling the narrative. It’s easy to imply and put words into the mouths of our politicians but if you’re quoting from source material offered by someone else, who is setting a different frame on the conversation based on what their agenda is… well, I think it’s damn easy to make an assumption into what is implied or meant by our own biases.

on the whole, it’s going to be a huge help to those who really need it and for one I am happy that its getting done and we’re focusing on helping people, period. Now, we shall see what else unfolds. We got Garland up for a vote now (thanks to the cloture being called) and if he can reform the DOJ to what it’s supposed to be, that will be another tremendous improvement. Knowing that Voting Rights and a boost to the minimum wage are also on deck lets me know what fights they think are worth doing and who knows what may be pivoted to after that. I suspect climate change, foreign policy and immigration may get some attention, in addition to the DOJ having a mandate to root out the domestic terrorism issue.

Let’s not forget the Rape of Nanking where the Japanese military murdered up to 300,000 Chinese in 1937. Their contempt was not reserved to those of European heritage; imperial Japan also treated Chinese and Koreans abysmally.

I’ve always thought there was a connection between Japanese brutality and the My Lai massacre, via the South Korean forces who served alongside Americans in the Vietnam War.
The earlier Korean War had been mostly a conventional affair with defined lines but there was also a persistent insurgency behind UN lines in South Korea. It was more than a nuisance, less than a crisis. Counter-insurgency missions were assigned mostly to reserve and local militia troops. These were typically older men who had been trained by, and who had served with, the Japanese Imperial Army during and before World War II. Most South Korean officers were also veterans of the Imperial army. The counter-insurgency operations were notable for the extreme brutality with which they were conducted. The UN (mostly US) 8th Army had little involvement with this but they did assign a Captain Samuel Koster, as a liaison officer to the counter-insutgency forces. Koster was one of the very few foreign officers who got a close look at RoK militia counter-insurgency methods.

Fifteen years later, South Korean troops in Vietnam were involved in a series of massacres of Vietnamese villagers, at Phong Nhị on February 12, 1968 and at Ha My on February 25th. The My Lai massacre occurred shortly afterward on March 16, 1968. The troops involved were from the US 23rd “Americal” Division, commanded by none other than now Major-General Samuel Koster, the expert on South Korean counter-insurgency methods.

Koster and several other high ranking officers flew over the village during the massacre and claimed to have seen nothing untoward, yet Hugh Thompson and his crew, who were just flying by on an unrelated mission, saw enough that they took the extraordinary step of landing and trying to intervene to stop the massacre.

My hypothesis is that My Lai was part of a concerted plan Koster had hatched with his Korean counterparts (he spoke Korean btw). Koster was punished only for covering up the massacre and was never officially accused of having planned or ordered it. All the troops involved, literally all of them, subsequently claimed they were acting under orders. Some had refused. As usual, most did not.

William Calley is a beast and a mass murderer but there is much justice to his claim that he was a lone scapegoat for higher ups who actually instigated the operation.
