I’ve always considered “My Song” one of Keith Jarrett’s most beautiful compositions. It doesn’t even really fit into the jazz genre; it’s more like a folk song. The evocative, affecting melody is simple but still surprising.
And this 2009 solo performance of the piece in Berlin takes it to another level. As far as I know this version is not included on any official album.

David Brooks has resigned from his position at the Aspen Institute following reporting by BuzzFeed News about conflicts of interest between the star New York Times columnist and funders of a program he led for the think tank.
Eileen Murphy, a spokesperson for the Times, said in a statement that editors approved Brooks’s involvement with Aspen in 2018, when he launched a project called Weave. But current editors weren’t aware he was receiving a salary for Weave.
“The current Opinion editors were unaware of this arrangement and have concluded that holding a paid position at Weave presents a conflict of interest for David in writing about the work of the project, its donors or the broader issues it focuses on,” Murphy said.
She said Brooks resigned his position at Aspen and will remain a volunteer for the project.

DeSantis did listen to several experts on how best to handle the disease for nursing home patients and apparently implemented a strategy based on the observation that 80% of deaths are among seniors over 65 and therefore if the state focuses on the best treatment for the elderly, it will significantly reduce mortality without needing to adopt stringent limitations on businesses.
Anyone from Florida have more insight? (or can read the entire article?) Are the Florida mortality statistics reliable?

The media vilified him for rejecting harsh lockdowns. But Florida’s Covid-19 numbers are better than California’s or New York’s, and its economy thrives.
In the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed strict lockdown policies—many still in place—and became the media’s golden boy. “The governor of New York’s morning news conferences have become part of the country’s new daily rhythm,” the Washington Post’s Style section gushed in March 2020. “He’s the strongman who can admit he’s wrong. He speaks fluently about the facts. He worries about his mother, and by extension, yours, too.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis took a different approach and was pilloried. He was among the first to lift his state lockdown, adopting something resembling Sweden’s strategy of protecting the vulnerable while keeping businesses and schools open. “Florida Man Leads His State to the Morgue,” read a June headline in the New Republic. “Ron DeSantis is the latest in a long line of Republicans who made the state a plutocratic dystopia. Now he’s letting its residents die to save the plutocrats.”
A year after the virus hit the U.S., Mr. Cuomo’s luster has faded, and Mr. DeSantis can claim vindication. The Sunshine State appears to have weathered the pandemic better than others like New York and California, which stayed locked down harder and longer.
Mortality data bear out this conclusion. The Covid death risk increases enormously with each decade of age. More than 80% of Covid deaths in the U.S. have occurred among seniors over 65. They make up a larger share of Florida’s population than any other state except Maine. Based on demographics, Florida’s per-capita Covid death rate would be expected to be one of the highest in the country.

They are ignoring of course New York was one of the first places hit, when no one knew what to do about the virus.
The article says Florida is in the middle of the pack on per capita deaths (according to Worldometer, that is correct, Florida ranks 27th). It ignores other states which have lower rates which imposed mask orders (such as Wyoming and Hawai’i, which score better than Florida, or those which did not such as North and South Dakota, which score far worse than Florida). They also ignore cities (higher rate) over rural areas (lower rate).

The article says Florida is in the middle of the pack on per capita deaths (according to Worldometer, that is correct, Florida ranks 27th). It ignores other states which have lower rates which imposed mask orders (such as Wyoming and Hawai’i, which score better than Florida, or those which did not such as North and South Dakota, which score far worse than Florida). They also ignore cities (higher rate) over rural areas (lower rate).

Texas health care is fine for those employed by large companies that provide comprehensive insurance benefits; as to lax safety regulations, it would be surprising if the companies relaxed their internal standard to meet lower Texas requirements, but that’s certainly possible. Texas tends to have more industrial accidents but that currently has played a minor role in affecting the well-being of most residents.

Ayala Cove on the Island and across Raccoon Strait Sam’s Restaurant in Tiburon were frequent stops when I sailed. I took the ferry to the island once back 20 years ago with my daughters. There are lots of trails and sights on the island. It was for housing immigrants for processing in the old days.

On Friday, Ricketts announced that he had designated March 20 as “Meat on the Menu Day” in Nebraska. He is encouraging people to buy and eat beef, pork, chicken, lamb or another kind of meat on that day.
He said he was doing so to highlight the importance of meat in a good diet as well as to provide an opportunity to support Nebraska farmers and ranchers. Nebraska is a major beef-producing state and also has a number of hog and chicken operations.
“While meat is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, there are radical anti-agriculture activists that are working to end meat production and our way of life here in Nebraska,” Ricketts said.

When Tyler Shaide and Sophia DiLorenzo came across the Facebook listing for an apartment for rent in North Philadelphia, it felt like a breath of fresh air.
After struggling with rent payments and moving out of their previous unit last month, the couple had found the Moscow & Monica apartment complex. Its new units could be leased month to month, property manager Frank Sanders told them, and didn’t require a credit check.
“He said it was a Black-owned business looking to help people out who have poor credit scores,” said DiLorenzo, 25. “We thought we found somewhere we can let the dust settle, continue to work on ourselves and our stability, get our credit up.”
They met Sanders at the building and agreed to rent a one-bedroom unit. Because the complex was new, Sanders said he was finalizing the lease with his boss, but would send it over right away. They gave Sanders a $750 security deposit, and moved in Feb. 20 without signing a lease.
Just a week after settling in, the couple returned home to find the building’s owner, Gagandeep Lakhmna, in the lobby. He wanted to know who they were and why they were living in his complex.

The longtime hospital chaplain has been with patients through chemotherapy and new diagnoses. She comforts couples who have lost infants, the families of stroke victims and people who were rushed to the emergency room and didn’t survive.
There are no words McLain Cox can say to ward off difficulty, or make it pass more quickly. But she can offer her presence. She talks to the worried and grieving through what they’re feeling, or they might sit together silently. She might offer a hug. Some reach out to hold her hand as they pray. Sometimes it’s a Coke from the vending machine that forges a connection.
But then came March 2020, and the realization that the mysterious and virulent coronavirus was here in Colorado. UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital filled with a palpable anxiety as patients arrived sick with a highly-contagious illness that doctors didn’t yet understand. As the facility entered lockdown mode, many patients said goodbye to their families, not knowing if they would see or touch each other again.
Across the state, from small-town hospice facilities to big metropolitan hospitals, clinicians and spiritual counselors trained to offer choices and dignity through illness and at the end of life are learning a new way of giving grace.
Hospitals in Colorado are still dealing with asshats who either don’t believe the disease is real, or do not take proper precautions.
When [Chaplain Ryan] Wooley [of a Ft. Collins hospital] got to the ICU waiting room, a nurse was explaining to the man’s two siblings what it might look and sound like as they removed the breathing tube. Wooley stood with them outside the hospital room for what must have been 10 minutes as they watched the nurse conduct the procedure through a window. The siblings held hands, watching the pause and measure of their brother’s every breath. Shortly after, he died.
Wooley walked with them back to the waiting room, where they talked about what happened. Just a week earlier, the siblings had been contacted by a palliative care nurse and informed of their brother’s poor condition, and felt some relief to have been able to make the visit, Wooley said. Before they left, one of them took Wooley’s hand.
“He said, ‘Seeing that this has actually taken my loved one — I just didn’t believe before this week that COVID was real. And now I do,’” Wooley recalled. “And I helped them get to the elevator, and they left.”
The comment left him dumbfounded and angry at some people’s denial of a disease whose damage had left him to spend nearly seven months comforting families and supporting exhausted hospital staff.

Of course this is an opinion piece and therefore needs to be taken with a pound of salt. And since I don’t subscribe to the publication, I don’t have access to the entire article.
I believe the basic argument was: Florida has a much older population than most states and therefore would be expected to exhibit a higher overall death rate, but the death rate is in the middle. The economy was opened and is much healthier than other states that were more serious about lockdowns, while the mortality is lower than states that instituted statewide measures. DeSantis did listen to several experts on how best to handle the disease for nursing home patients and apparently implemented a strategy based on the observation that 80% of deaths are among seniors over 65 and therefore if the state focuses on the best treatment for the elderly, it will significantly reduce mortality without needing to adopt stringent limitations on businesses.
Anyone from Florida have more insight? (or can read the entire article?) Are the Florida mortality statistics reliable?

It’s usually a pretty balanced program, but his morning their last piece of the show was about Twins spring training in Fort Myers, Florida and their “guest” focused on how much Minnesotans will enjoy the experience of coming down and enjoying the fully open restaurants and unfettered social atmosphere of Fort Myers. I don’t think that the word Covid was mentioned even once.

The station, to their credit, immediately ran a very well done Covid awareness PSA right after the interview. One of the station’s clients is an indoor water park in western WI, and the station almost always runs one of their Covid PSAs right before or after that ad. I love that station.

Floridians are outdoors much more in winter than those in the cold parts of the country. It is pretty clear that being in a closed room with the infected is a very high risk to others in the room. Sitting on a park bench outside - not so much.
Look at the Worldometer statistics. Florida is right above the US mean for cases/1M, California is just a tiny bit higher. But Florida has more deaths/1M than California. This is likely for two reasons: Florida has more old people/1M, and it is very likely that Florida has under-reported cases.
So yeah, nothing to crow about there Florida. Indeed, with the fact that one can spend most of the day outdoors in Florida, the proper thing to have done would have been to close down as many closed-in areas as possible.

Got my wife her Fauci Ouchie yesterday (she said she didn’t feel it though she’s got some site tenderness as there’s an alien substance in the muscle tissue). We went to the mass vaccination site in San Mateo - drive thru - probably 400 cars there when we arrived(maybe 1/3 in the 15 min post shot zone), and an orange cone serpentine pattern. Took us about 20 minutes to get to the event center, where they had maybe 20 lanes of nurses…so another 10-15 before she got her shot. Then we were directed into a column of vehicles where we sat for 15 minutes before someone walked down our row and asked for a thumbs up.
Best part for me was the people doing traffic control were thanking every car as it left. Super good vibe. Looking forward to my turn.

CRT sets a lot of people off, especially the religious right.
CRT is a hard sell to American because the affront is not just about racism, but accepting a view of the self that is very much in conflict with the American fanciful slogan of “the individual”.
The hard sell: we are a reflection of our culture, and its past. We are greatly programmed by our parents. They were programmed by their parents (hence our grandparents.) And so on.
The US today is a direct result of the past. Including the slave-holding past.
And CRT goes farther, of course. It proposes that these things are so deeply rooted in our society that our laws and institutions have not escaped racism even to this day.
My own suspicion is that these things will work through time sort of like the works of Marx. Even though the know-nothing religious right cringe at the mention of Marx, the reality is that he made several useful observations and conclusions about economics in his time, that have then influenced economic theory since and have been used and abused by politicians, etc. So it will be with CRT (and its spin-offs) - over time we will find a softer acceptance of some of the ideas that have been asserted, even though some (American Christian fundamentalists) may rail against it for as long as such groups exist.

But you know, I’m not going to let the leadership of the SBC forget that when it comes to serious issues (and racism is one of them), they are DO NOTHINGS. It’s not just child sexual abuse either…it’s also the role of women in the church (second class) and how to treat LGBTQIA people (like sinful scum of the earth). Engrained racism is there, along with engrained sexism, enforced heterosexuality and then the child sexual abuse crisis, which is probably a combination of patriarchy, sexism, treating kids as male property etc. etc.
ETA: It was 40 years ago when I learned from a friend of mine how Marxism had been filtered through the academy and was used as one of the frameworks to examine how societies organize themselves. It wasn’t communism at all, Marxism was just a useful tool (one of many) to do that examination.

Interesting stories abound on how Fujifilm differed from Kodak was related to how Japanese are differently colored than Europeans.

The Japanese government only officially recognized the Ainu as indigenous Japanese two years ago. And of course there is the ongoing fracas between Japan and South Korea over the “comfort women” (women pressed into sex service against their will) in Japan during WWII.
ETA: There are a number of statues to “comfort women” around the world and official Japan tends to get somewhat livid about them. It’s a toxic combination of xenophobia and sexism at work here.

A week ago, i changed over my Google News feed to Spanish and well, what I’ve discovered from rummaging through various Spanish (both Latin American and Spain) sources is the serious interrelated problems of drugs and cartels.
Basically, to keep track of the ongoing low-level drug war going on in Mexico, you need a freaking Pepe Silvia bulletin board. There are a number of multinational cartels and quite a few more regional and Mexico City-area cartels/gangs.
Here’s a map put together by the DEA of the different major cartels and their influence in the USA.

The Sinaloa Cartel is most widespread, but from reading in various Mexican news sources, the up and coming Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacíon (CJNG) or “cartel de cuatro letras” is really causing havoc. It is absolutely not hard to understand why people are not staying in Mexico after leaving Guatemala or Honduras, because many parts of Mexico are simply not safe. Now I know the general rule with asylum seekers is they’re supposed to request asylum in the first safe place they get to, but this is the issue with Mexico. Nobody wants to admit there’s a serious low level drug/cartel war going on. Not the Mexican government, not the US government, not anybody. Hence the pressure during the Trump administration to get Mexico to take the people fleeing Honduras and Guatemala. The Biden administration is being slightly more realistic about this, but it too is not going to admit that Mexico is very problematic, even if the State Department is really advising against travel.
So I’m driving home from my night at work. I’m taking a long way home simply to try and grab some photos. Down this one back road a couple of miles from home I see a bunch of TVs, computer monitors and a handful of computer cases. I stop and check it out, just in case someone threw out something cool like a Sun or an SGI :D
Well, not quite that good but still, hidden in between the consumer grade Compaq garbage was a nice 2002 Power Mac G4. I snarf it up into the truck and trundle on home.
It’s filthy but I open the case and everything is still in it: ATI video card, 80 gb hard drive, DVD-R, one stick of RAM - 512 mb, and major win! Dual G4 1 ghz processors. Quick glance online says it supports OS 9 through 10.5.8, can take 1.5 gb of RAM. Hook up and monitor, keyboard & rodent, hit the power and get the nice deep bong a Mac person likes to hear :) It trundles away but comes up to an unwiped drive running MacOS X 10.2. If I needed them, the Photoshop and Illustrator would be nice but I really don’t need Mr Graphics Superstar Wannabe’s personal files.
So, now to find an OS for it. One of the BSD’s probably or 10.5.8 if I want to stay with the MacOS X thing. Morph OS would have been a consideration but the GeForce 4 MX video card is unsupported. Yeah, 10.5.8 to start with at least and get his files gone. A glance at Eprey shows these still get about $200 ~ $300. Might just have to consider that once I get it cleaned up a bit.

That’s what the owner of this one was doing (Adobe suite, Macromedia suite, etc) but it looks like it stopped being used around 2007. OTOH, getting 5 years out of a high end PC is near impossible AND this thing still runs as good as it did then.
I’m actually thinking of running MacOS X 10.4.11 so I can do classic - I have a nice pile of good 68k software still and it could be fun to see what runs in OS 9. Dropping in the other gig of memory it can handle will speed it up considerably as well. One thing that has been true of every Unix since the first PDP: it needs more memory :D

I must disagree. The machine my son built at the end of his penultimate year of high school got handed down to me eventually, and was my gaming rig until the end of last year. That’s twelve years of service with storage and GPU updates along the way.
The mid range machine I built around the time we moved house is also still ticking along - with a RAM upgrade in addition to disk (gone all SSD) and video card replacements - and will be having its tenth anniversary this year.
I guess the moral of the story is, roll your own.

But I’ll admit I was thinking more of those early PII boxes I left in that snowbank because even if they run they aren’t worth the electricity. A 486 box would be fun in a very different way: pop something like Xenix on it and be in another universe :) but just another econo box? Bleah!

before I may have thought so too, but I am forced to remember that just because the media frames a story in a certain way, doesn’t necessarily make it so.
It really could be as simple as Manchin and Sinema wanting to keep some substance version of the filibuster for forms sake and are actually open to its modification, say one of the multiple suggestions that puts the onus on those using it to actually be there for the performance, i.e. no more of this showing up once a day, lodging an objection and then doing another guest spot on Faux News. This could be in if you feel passionate enough about something being wrong, then your ass is in there making your impassioned argument. Your party supports your decision, then they must have members show up and be counted. Seems like that would put a serious crimp in the performance art that the GOP has employed to date.
When we objectively look at the changes to the 1.9T rescue act, it’s STILL 1.9 trillion. Some the amount of UI compensation was tweaked, as was the length it would be in effect, then it appears some of that savings was shunted into 800B being earmarked for homeless kids (courtesy of Sen Murkowski, who then voted against her own amendment). The volume of the bill is tremendous and as has been reported, hardly a nickle goes to the usual GOP suspects, unless you count the help going to Red States, which is still on them to use appropriately.
I’m reminded of that scene from All The President’s Men, when our intrepid reporters are hung out to dry because while the person in question was ready to name names, no one bothered to ask them the question. Considering the fecklessness of some of those in the 4th estate, I can never really be SURE that the questions that we ask ourselves in here are ever uttered by those controlling the narrative. It’s easy to imply and put words into the mouths of our politicians but if you’re quoting from source material offered by someone else, who is setting a different frame on the conversation based on what their agenda is… well, I think it’s damn easy to make an assumption into what is implied or meant by our own biases.
on the whole, it’s going to be a huge help to those who really need it and for one I am happy that its getting done and we’re focusing on helping people, period. Now, we shall see what else unfolds. We got Garland up for a vote now (thanks to the cloture being called) and if he can reform the DOJ to what it’s supposed to be, that will be another tremendous improvement. Knowing that Voting Rights and a boost to the minimum wage are also on deck lets me know what fights they think are worth doing and who knows what may be pivoted to after that. I suspect climate change, foreign policy and immigration may get some attention, in addition to the DOJ having a mandate to root out the domestic terrorism issue.

I’ve always thought there was a connection between Japanese brutality and the My Lai massacre, via the South Korean forces who served alongside Americans in the Vietnam War.
The earlier Korean War had been mostly a conventional affair with defined lines but there was also a persistent insurgency behind UN lines in South Korea. It was more than a nuisance, less than a crisis. Counter-insurgency missions were assigned mostly to reserve and local militia troops. These were typically older men who had been trained by, and who had served with, the Japanese Imperial Army during and before World War II. Most South Korean officers were also veterans of the Imperial army. The counter-insurgency operations were notable for the extreme brutality with which they were conducted. The UN (mostly US) 8th Army had little involvement with this but they did assign a Captain Samuel Koster, as a liaison officer to the counter-insutgency forces. Koster was one of the very few foreign officers who got a close look at RoK militia counter-insurgency methods.
Fifteen years later, South Korean troops in Vietnam were involved in a series of massacres of Vietnamese villagers, at Phong Nhị on February 12, 1968 and at Ha My on February 25th. The My Lai massacre occurred shortly afterward on March 16, 1968. The troops involved were from the US 23rd “Americal” Division, commanded by none other than now Major-General Samuel Koster, the expert on South Korean counter-insurgency methods.
Koster and several other high ranking officers flew over the village during the massacre and claimed to have seen nothing untoward, yet Hugh Thompson and his crew, who were just flying by on an unrelated mission, saw enough that they took the extraordinary step of landing and trying to intervene to stop the massacre.
My hypothesis is that My Lai was part of a concerted plan Koster had hatched with his Korean counterparts (he spoke Korean btw). Koster was punished only for covering up the massacre and was never officially accused of having planned or ordered it. All the troops involved, literally all of them, subsequently claimed they were acting under orders. Some had refused. As usual, most did not.
William Calley is a beast and a mass murderer but there is much justice to his claim that he was a lone scapegoat for higher ups who actually instigated the operation.
