re: #235 Grunthos the Flatulent

I must disagree. The machine my son built at the end of his penultimate year of high school got handed down to me eventually, and was my gaming rig until the end of last year. That’s twelve years of service with storage and GPU updates along the way.
The mid range machine I built around the time we moved house is also still ticking along - with a RAM upgrade in addition to disk (gone all SSD) and video card replacements - and will be having its tenth anniversary this year.
I guess the moral of the story is, roll your own.

If you had mentioned a Mobo upgrade I’d had to say something about the “Ship of Theseus” but frankly that’s more of an exception that proves the rule.

But I’ll admit I was thinking more of those early PII boxes I left in that snowbank because even if they run they aren’t worth the electricity. A 486 box would be fun in a very different way: pop something like Xenix on it and be in another universe :) but just another econo box? Bleah!

They’re creeping into Mormon territory there, with an afterlife full of employment as some sort of super being managing eternal assets.

Meanwhile, the fleeced flock is programmed to respond to key words and phrases. The ecclesiastical use of “government regulation” is clearly an attempt to wed theocracy into the planks of God’s Own Party.

From last string:

re: #219 Hecuba’s daughter

Let’s not forget the Rape of Nanking where the Japanese military murdered up to 300,000 Chinese in 1937. Their contempt was not reserved to those of European heritage; imperial Japan also treated Chinese and Koreans abysmally.

I’ve always thought there was a connection between Japanese brutality and the My Lai massacre, via the South Korean forces who served alongside Americans in the Vietnam War.

The earlier Korean War had been mostly a conventional affair with defined lines but there was also a persistent insurgency behind UN lines in South Korea. It was more than a nuisance, less than a crisis. Counter-insurgency missions were assigned mostly to reserve and local militia troops. These were typically older men who had been trained by, and who had served with, the Japanese Imperial Army during and before World War II. Most South Korean officers were also veterans of the Imperial army. The counter-insurgency operations were notable for the extreme brutality with which they were conducted. The UN (mostly US) 8th Army had little involvement with this but they did assign a Captain Samuel Koster as a liaison officer to the counter-insurgency forces. Koster was one of the very few foreign officers who got a close look at RoK counter-insurgency methods.

Fifteen years later, South Korean troops in Vietnam were involved in a series of massacres of Vietnamese villagers, at Phong Nhị on February 12, 1968 and at Ha My on February 25th. The My Lai massacre occurred shortly afterward on March 16, 1968. The troops involved were from the US 23rd “Americal” Division, commanded by none other than now Major-General Samuel Koster, the expert on South Korean counter-insurgency methods.

Koster and several other high ranking officers flew over the village during the massacre and claimed to have seen nothing untoward, yet Hugh Thompson and his crew, who were just flying by on an unrelated mission, saw enough that they took the extraordinary step of landing and trying to intervene to stop the massacre.

My hypothesis is that My Lai was part of a concerted plan Koster had hatched with his Korean counterparts (he spoke Korean btw). Koster was punished only for covering up the massacre and was never officially accused of having planned or ordered it. All the troops involved, literally all of them, subsequently claimed they were acting under orders. Some had refused. As usual, most did not.

William Calley is a beast and a mass murderer but there is much justice to his claim that he was a lone scapegoat for higher ups who actually instigated the operation.

Interesting!

It reminds me of a man, whom I will leave nameless, who I met during an Army Reserve training mission at West Point. We were conducting an exercise to train MP’s how to deal with insurgents and the like. Some of us would be regular refugees and some of us would be insurgents mixed in with them. We would have numerous weapons hidden on our persons and it was always amazing how many the MPs would miss and yet we’d not let them cross any lines in the training - just showing them how they could get the job done in the process.

With the MPs was an old NCO who one evening told a few of us a few stories. They may not have been true but after a few years you get a feel for which are the BS & lies and which aren’t. His story wasn’t.

He told us that he’d been assigned to the Phoenix Program while in Vietnam. It was a program of assassination that got way out of hand. He claimed he was deeply involved and had serious guilt over it. Just read the wiki for why that might be. Anyway he got sent back stateside and went into the Ohio National Guard in late 1969. When the protests against the US incursions into Cambodia occurred he was one of those called up. He tried to convince the powers that be to not give the troops live ammo - the bayonets were all they would need to defend themselves. He was, of course, over ruled and we know the results. He said he always wondered if their deaths wasn’t part of his karma for what he’d done in Vietnam. (I tend to think if that were the case, the US civilians got off light, but I digress…)

Now his story isn’t in the excellent book by James A. Michener. But nothing in it contradicts anything there either. So I wonder and I remember.

So variants of SARS-Cov-2 are popping up all over the place.

The UK had a “Brazil” variant scare the other day.

I can’t quite determine how sure the experts are on reinfection capabilities by these new variants.

Or how well the current vaccines will work.

This is a long term problem. Scientists warned this, of course.

But the know nothings - not just here in the US but elsewhere too - would have nothing of expertise.

I fear a MERS like variant springing up out of the evolutionary grind that happens in all hosts of the virus.

So Chuck Todd is trending on Twitter again, and it was not a difficult thing to guess why.

Even though people whine about him and want him replaced, as the Political director of NBC News he’s the editor in charge for what he does and the other political coverage and NBC News. So basically he hired himself to do Meet The Press.

His boss is Cesar Conde, and Conde has no business reason to replace Todd as long as Todd gets good ratings and the political news coverage as a whole gets good ratings.

Sen. Joe Manchin told NBC News “that he won’t bend in his support for the filibuster, a Senate rule that forces most legislation to require bipartisan support to pass.”

“But he added that he would be open to Democrats passing more important legislation like voting reforms by a party-line vote — if senators are given ample space for bipartisan negotiation first.”

He also said that he was “willing to look at” ideas to make the filibuster “a little bit more painful,” like requiring lawmakers to take to the floor for marathon speeches if they wanted to use the procedure.

What he hasn’t said…yet…is bipartisan negotiations on point

Yes.

But NBC News is a unit of Comcast. Comcast only cares about making money. So Conde is supposed to ensure that NBC News makes money. Chuck Todd does decent ratings (beats competitor), and what he overseas does well enough in ratings.

All that matters to corporate media is making money.

Making money means selling advertising (or subscriptions if you want to buy PeacockTV.)

Advertisers only care about eyes.

Chuck Todd delivers eyes.

“News” in politics is whatever Chuck Todd decides is news.

Any concern over reality, truth, etc. are inconveniences.

Many of us with gray hair grew up when there was an idealism in journalism that spilled over to TV. Walter Cronkite was the conduit for what was news, and he and his cohorts thought that was a civic duty.

But that world is gone now.

We are back to say the 19th century, when various papers in locales were controlled by whoever wanted to print something.

Go look at some 19th century newspapers around the era of the Civil War. Newsprint was the medium, but the message was what sold to the local community.

b) I only found out about it because I had recently heard that certain alt-right incels were attempting to appropriate it, which I found funny, because…
c) I found through my research that the major genre-defining album of Vapourwave is actually by a trans woman: “Floral Shoppe” by Macintosh Plus (From 2011), a non-de-plume of Vektroid aka Ramona Andra Xavier of Portland, Oregon.

sometimes you come across stuff in Wikipedia that is just mind-blowing: “Yuri Gagarin was the backup pilot for Soyuz 1, and was aware of the design problems and the pressures from the Politburo to proceed with the flight. He attempted to “bump” Komarov from the mission, knowing that the Soviet leadership would not risk a national hero on the flight.[5] At the same time, Komarov refused to pass on the mission, even though he believed it to be doomed. He explained that he could not risk Gagarin’s life.”

With over 2 million shots being administered per day, it really is time to end any eligibility requirements. And make it mobile.

Sorry I disagree, my parents are both over 75 and were just able to get their first shots this past week and not for lack of trying. The available doses are scheduled literally minutes after becoming available. I am more than willing to wait another month or two so the most vulnerable have a chance to get theirs. If there were large numbers of shots spoiling because of lack of interest that would be one thing, but we don’t need to take whats been sort of a cluster f—- in most states and make it worse by opening the flood gates.

So one of the mega churches in town that’s been violating Covid protocols since the beginning of the pandemic had a special guest speaker today. Charlie Kirk.

FFS

There is absolutely no fucking reason for partisan politico Charlie Kirk to be speaking at a church, except to emphasize that the church is part of the GOP. I am tired of this nonsense.

I am now at the point where every religious institution has to file a Form 990, which is public. Now, the thing is, there’s a postcard Form 990 for organizations that take in relatively little money (“if their annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less” per the IRS). I’d be willing to double that, which should take in most churches, and then make the rest of the outfits file the regular Form 990.

The San Diego county statistics shows that 1.3% of known COVID cases ended in death.

That is by far the highest mortality for any recent disease. I can’t find the mortality statistics for San Diego county for the 1918 influenza pandemic, but it was probably higher than the current COVID mortality.

Anyway, the reality that COVID was going to be much worse than recent flu strains was known pretty early, but Trump and his cronies publicly played down the risk. And apparently in private only concerned them with finding a way to benefit from it.

It is hard to fathom how much denial has to go through the heads of Trumpers who still cling to their beliefs. I’ve known plenty of people caught up in cults before, and the underlying cause of course is that we humans have emotional needs that over-ride our rational thinking.

Still, the inability of people to accept what the data shows is a scary thing.

This kind of behavior is not limited to the US. But we like to think with our wealth, high technology, and copious educational institutions, that we’d be beyond all the baggage of cults.

But alas, no.

If UT Austin brings back the Confederate statues, this class of 1984 grad will line up a few more alums, we’ll go to Austin and make our amends by yanking them down like we should have at the beginning of the 1980s!

Yeah, I can’t find a place to get vaccinated around here. Because I don’t have documented co-morbidities, I have to wait until vaccinations open up to any old folk (starts 15 March.) And then there will be another rush. I’m probably looking at April before I can get vaccinated.

I mixed it up with a “royal reporter” yesterday on Twitter who was claiming to have been defamed by a woman from Somerville, Mass., on Twitter. He was very put out by this woman calling him a racist and threatened to sue her, even though it was pointed out that she was in the USA and under US law, her statement was a non-starter.

My point was that this guy was some sort of softie who had never been harassed for real, like the people I know who had/have reported on Scientology. I said that the guy had probably had nothing worse than a teacup lobbed at him by an unhappy royal.

In any case, I don’t know what’s going on with the royal family, but given how Meghan was being treated by the royal reporters and tabloids, I tend to lean on her side. Then add in how the tabloids and paparazzi basically chased Harry’s mother to her death, then I can see why *he* would be unbelievably pissed off.

Part of me kind of wishes that “Henry Windsor-Markle” would apply for US citizenship, which would require him to completely relinquish his titles. I doubt he’d do it, but it would cause an explosion in The Firm.

I don’t think racism is 100% of Meghan hate. Part of it is her not playing ball with them. But what does it matter? Kate bought into it, and that’s her choice. Meghan is not buying in on the same level. So they will focus in on her blackness to justify their rejection of her.

Fuck em. I hope Harry makes her breakfast in bed for decades.

BigPapa  Mar 7, 2021 • 2:35:43pm

We think it’s cute that Harry fawns or fusses over his wife. It is. I love it. But we focus less on when women fawn over their husbands, it’s not as impactful. Meghan loves Harry. She wouldn’t go through this bullshit if she didn’t. For every bit as much as I fuss over my Wife Unit, which she deserves, she takes care of me tenfold. The least I can do is keep up.

Go Harry. Meghan is your freedom.

Florida GOP seems to want to deliberately make things like unemployment distribution look like government fucking up until it impacts their constituents. Not surprised that they would feel threatened about FEMA helping out marginalized communities.

re: #81 steve_davis

sometimes you come across stuff in Wikipedia that is just mind-blowing: “Yuri Gagarin was the backup pilot for Soyuz 1, and was aware of the design problems and the pressures from the Politburo to proceed with the flight. He attempted to “bump” Komarov from the mission, knowing that the Soviet leadership would not risk a national hero on the flight.[5] At the same time, Komarov refused to pass on the mission, even though he believed it to be doomed. He explained that he could not risk Gagarin’s life.”

Every time Wikipedia fundraises I give the 3.00.

Amazing the shit you find out/learn + those fun rabbit holes.

re: #96 mmmirele

William has tried to be the perfect royal. Everything his father wasn’t. He’s done a good job at it and should be handed the throne by both of those ahead of him for the sale of England.

Harry has been the kind of man most of the previous kings were. And frankly he’s done alright at it. I enjoy watching him protect the one he loves. But yeah, applying for US citizenship might just be the only big enough slap in the face of “the firm” to get through their egos.

Now don’t get me wrong. There are very real reasons (Edward, etc) for Regina Elizabeth II to be how she is and I think that many others and they would have gone for royal free by now. Her service in the war was real and Sub-Altern Winsor is an important thing to remember. I hope that the recent court victories by Harry and Megan over the scum in the English press helps make things a little better.

Speaking of reactions, ahem. That second shingles shot kicked me pretty hard. Still, I was absolutely delighted to get it, because I’ve seen what that virus does! My grandfather and a cousin both had more or less permanent shingles, once it got going. Agony.

At least 2 weeks. A girl friend went to get her Covid shot but the facility could not give her the vaccine because her internist was unaware of the limitation and administered a flu shot a few days earlier. That meant she had to start over again trying to get an appointment.

Most of all, the tabloids need a white sheep and a black sheep. Any wife of the second son would get some sort of abuse — racist tropes happened to be available in this case. And it started before she “didn’t play ball,” and wouldn’t stop no matter what she did.
