A couple of cow-orkers have been into our work area since then, but I have not. All of my personal trinkets are still there, along with my trusty work laptop, to which I have connected remotely with no issues every day since.

About the same here. I’m hoping my barber will still be alive and in business. He was in his 70’s last time I saw him although he looks younger than me and is still very good with the clippers. I love his tapered buzz-cut. He may have finally retired.

Mrs. Fish does my hair, so I’ve been able to keep myself trimmed, at least on top and in back. My beard, on the other hand, has not been fully shaven since last March, and at points has gotten to be quite unruly.

Looks like I’m not the only one sporting a Covid beard and hair style. My beard is about 5” long and my hair is about 4” in length. Been about 15 months since my last cut/trim.

33
darthstar  Mar 7, 2021 • 4:58:45pm

As I approach a year of home office and varying periods of self isolation, I like to think about all the things I’ve done that I normally talked about for years but never got around to:

1. Bought a smoker and actually use it. Also added a stainless steel table to organize chips and other paraphernalia associated with it.
2. Taught myself how to cold-smoke salmon - hot smoking is easy. Cold smoking took some serious thought, but I created 9lbs of my own lox for bagels (shared a bunch with friends and neighbors). Can’t wait to do that again.
3. (Re-)learned out to play the guitar. One of the musicians at our wedding in 2009 is our instructor. We do weekly zoom lessons, and he has pushed me along at a fairly good clip - bluegrass, classic rock, and when I pulled a song out of my ass (eg: Never My Love by the Association) he learned it himself then helped me learn it.
4. Grew vegetables - sure, we’ve lived here for 11 years and planted the occasional tomato and a few herbs, but this is the first time we’ve taken advantage of our exceptional climate and provided regular food to the table. (and just built a greenhouse to aid in growing peppers and tomatoes that like warmer weather - weed will come in the fall).
5. Learned Spanish - started doing DuoLingo nine days after stay at home began (so it’s almost a full year streak) because we missed being able to go to Mexico for our annual visit and I wanted to be able to say more than just “Donde esta el bano” next time I went down.
6. Really gotten to know our neighbors. We’ve formed a 2-3 house Covid pod with them and it’s been a godsend. We regularly text each other if one is at the store then venmo whatever the item costs. They’ve taken to passing their tools they no longer need to me as well - for example a full set of DeWalt power drills and a sawzall with 8 extra batteries because he upgraded to their newest…
7. Adopted a second dog - Milo - whom Merle has accepted pretty much completely (with the occasional scuffle) - though when they play on the bed it makes it nearly impossible to drink coffee.

And there’s probably another half dozen things I haven’t thought about just now…oh, and Joe Biden became president and I remembered my password here and now I’m once again a regular. Love you fuckers.

I’m now officially able to use a rubber band to hold my hair in a pony tail, and I do for work because I work in a bank and just got promoted and nobody needs to see my gorgeous locks cascading over my shoulders on zoom…though sometimes I do forget.

Joe is getting close to opening the schools but he does not want to risk teachers and students lives.

President Biden is going to announce a reopening plan soon which will include all teachers and other school employees getting their shot (or second shot) at least three weeks before any in person instruction.

The follow up to that needs to be ensuring that the families of those children have access to vaccinations because those little fuckin’ vectors will be coming home with virus all over them.

My Wahl clipper is relatively new. I need to figure out how to sharpen it. I replaced our old (hand-me-down) unit due to the same issue, and I would rather not be disposable with them. They’re very nice, and not exactly cheap.

I suck at growing facial hair so I’ve kept myself clean shaven the whole time. Grew some lamb chop side-burns early on because I wanted to look like George Jones (who sang so pretty it made your dick hard according to Mojo Nixon)…but I shaved those off too and now just have semi-burly side-burns down to my ear lobes.

I want a law passed that any member of Congress is only paid the minimum wage and can not receive any other income while serving as a member of congress. They have to live on the same amount they say others can live on. I’d say their health care too but honestly that’s getting cruel and unusual while the rest would make the point.

In practice, this would likely lead to only millionaires serving, since no one else could live in DC on those wages. I do think that anyone in any federal office should have to completely divest any business holdings or stocks and put everything in a blind trust, including any stocks. I also think that all financial records, including tax returns, should be public knowledge as a condition of filing for office.

There could be dormitories for congress representatives to live in, the equivalent of a Holiday Inn.

Without the free breakfast. You know Lindsey would fill his desk with Yoplait yogurt containers and hard-boiled eggs.

I’m now officially able to use a rubber band to hold my hair in a pony tail, and I do for work because I work in a bank and just got promoted and nobody needs to see my gorgeous locks cascading over my shoulders on zoom…though sometimes I do forget.

Rubber bands will damage your hair.

Use scrunches.

Texas Won’t Reduce $16 Billion In Electricity Charges From Winter Storm

That’s because for a period of 32 hours during the deepest freeze of February’s winter storm, power companies were paying $9 per kilowatt-hour for electricity — about 75 times higher than the state’s average winter costs. Companies passed those costs on to consumers.

Texans facing those unexpected bills were hoping that Texas’ utility regulator would retroactively reduce the electricity market prices. But on Friday, the Public Utility Commission of Texas chose to let the charges stand.

It might seem like retroactively reducing the charges would be good for consumers, said Texas PUC Chairman Arthur D’Andrea during Friday’s public meeting. But, he argued, that reflects a “simplistic” view of how Texas power markets work.

“We just see the tip of the iceberg,” D’Andrea said. “You don’t know who you’re hurting. You think you’re protecting the consumer and turns out you’re bankrupting a co-op or a city. And so it’s dangerous, after something is run, to go around and redo it.”

The PUC itself had authorized the wholesale price increase, hoping it would spur power companies to generate more electricity. But according to the state’s independent market monitor, prices were kept high for much longer than necessary.

The monitor, Potomac Economics, had urged the PUC to retroactively change prices for 32 hours around Feb. 18 and 19. Potomac Economics calculated that the inflated electricity rate during that time period led to $16 billion in additional charges.

But D’Andrea and the PUC’s other commissioner were reluctant to retroactively tamper with the pricing. “Decisions were made about these prices in real time based on information that was available to everybody, to all market participants,” D’Andrea said. “And they did all sorts of things that they wouldn’t have done if the prices were different. And it’s just nearly impossible to unscramble this sort of egg.

“It would be unreasonable for people to expect the government to take care of it’s citizens.”

Well, the electric companies were just following the regulations (or lack thereof) in the marketplace. It’s really on the Texas legislators to fix this fucking mess, though it would be nice if the utility companies could be a bit more lenient with their customers (yeah I know wishful thinking).

At the beginning of last year, I started going to a game store that did D&D on the weekends. The group I would play in talked about a DM who specifically thought it was his job to kill all of the PCs.

Then he has no business being DM. A good DM should want to challenge players but not to the point of purposely fucking up their chances of succeeding.

I can understand why my DM was trying to do that. Half our group didn’t show up for the second session, so he gave us a few power items. However, he underestimated the strength of my character build, given my experience in online MMORPG’s. I built a tank, and he didn’t realize just how tanky I was. He intended to make me sweat, and boy, did he ever. I was very close to death when the killing blow landed. The whole crew cheered when I threw my final roll and he asked that fateful question, “How did you do it?”

My Twitter timeline is almost completely a discussion about Oprah’s interview with Meghan (and some Harry). If Meghan is to be believed, she was very badly treated and at one point she was suicidal and didn’t think she could be left alone.

Of course, I understand it’s her side of the story, but I’ve also seen how truly vicious the British tabloid press and the royal reporters can be to someone who is not in their favor. I’m tending to believe her. On top of that, I can only imagine how Harry must have thought NOT AGAIN and thinking he could lose his wife, just as he lost his mother when he was a boy.

And then there’s that whole Prince Andrew / Epstein business…ugh. I’m glad I’m not famous.

ETA: Harry says his father stopped taking his calls. You know, even when me and my dad were at complete loggerheads with each other (because I refused to move home after I dropped out of school) we still talked once a week. Hell of a family you got there, Harry…

My bass drum has a dragon like that top right one (only cuter) swirling around the top half of the drum. A drummer I knew with similar black Slingerlands had most of his kit painted by a guy who painted choppers, but then he decided he wanted a 24” bass (which I had) and I wanted his 22” bass, so we traded. It’s pretty cool, and I think I got the better part of the deal. I’ll post a picture of it if I dig it out.
