“You Saw Me Comin’,” a previously unreleased song and recording from 1992 and the final track on the collection, is premiering alongside a video directed by Joel Kazuo Knoernschild and Katie Malia. Reflecting upon recording “You Saw Me Comin’” for Wildflowers, Benmont Tench notes, “There’s this kind of longing in the song, in the way that he wrote the chord structure, the melody and the lyrics. It’s wistful, and it would have been the perfect way to end the disc.”

The song’s cool, but the visual production was just aces back to back.

re: #106 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

My legendary battle axe rolls a D12 when I wield it with two hands. And as a dwarf fighter, why wouldn’t I?

As a dwarf? Of course.
Now as an arcane trickster half elf, I’ll be hiding in the shadows with a magic missile and a side-sword (well, D&D calls it a rapier but it’s better than that) doing a nicely surprising backstab. Knock is memorized too. It’s my version of Scotty saying it’ll take a day to repair the Enterprise and being done in an hour :D

(I’ve always wondered if the screenwriter that had him say that was thinking of the nearly miraculous repair of the Yorktown that got her ready in time for Midway… )

So here’s an idea for a story.

At the end of the Arthur cycle, he goes off to Avalon promising to come back when England needs him.

And he does, repeatedly through history, but there is always a price to be paid.

Let’s say he comes back as Henry V, wins Againcourt but then he marries that French princess who brings the congenital insanity of the French court to England in Henry VI. Meanwhile France has one if it’s few good kings in Charles VII.

Rinse and repeat for storytelling purposes.

My wife, who is a pro-British-Royal Arkansan, basically equates Megan with Wallis Simpson and did not watch the interview. It was a rather interesting conversation. She was mentioning something about Oprah being at the wedding and that being the first time Oprah and Megan met, and therefore this interview and the steps leading to it had been planned for a while.

That would be gorgeous, but a simple piece of mono forged steel with a differential temper so that the back gives just that little bit so the edge doesn’t shatter? That would be a delight for fighting with. A blade that can puncture mail or cut silk is what I’d like if I could afford the smithing needed.

So, this afternoon I got a call from a number I didn’t recognize. I almost didn’t answer but I thought it it was a spam call, I could just hang up.

Friday, I became eligible for Covid vaccine, and called to check on an appointment for a Vaccination event about 5 minutes from home, but the recording stated that they were out of appointments, and if I wanted to get on the standby list, to leave my name, number, birthday. The call was from my city council-person’s office, stating that they had available slots. I said yes, gave my info regarding why I was eligible and told that my appointment was for 45 minutes later. Two hours later, I had my first Moderna shot, and an appointment set up already for the second shot 4 weeks from now, at the same time.

Edit: No side effects so far.

Via the Omaha World-Herald:

Scottsbluff once again in major movie spotlight with ‘Nomadland’

In the past few years in Scottsbluff, you might have spotted actress Frances McDormand running a piler at the beet factory or one of the Coen brothers dining out at a local restaurant.

Or maybe you’d walk past McDormand and husband Joel Coen buying yarn at the Brown Sheep Company outside of town.

“She’s quite the knitter,” said Starr Lehl, economic development director for the City of Scottsbluff.

Since 2017, the Scottsbluff area has been a location for two movies and a reality TV show, “Street Outlaws.”

Joel and Ethan Coen first filmed a segment of “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” on a private ranch in the area in 2017 and then McDormand returned in 2018 for “Nomadland.”

Speaking from experience, Small Town America tm is still very much buried in that ideal that those who need help don’t ask for it because to do so would lead to being seen as a “failure.”

Lose your job? You’re not supposed to take welfare, that’s for workin’ people with families who can’t get by. What you’re supposed to do is get out there and pound the pavement, put in applications in every business no matter how shitty, because “a job’s a job.”

Don’t get paid enough to get by? Well shit, son, if you’ve got time to complain then you’ve got time to find another job. My daddy didn’t feed his kids with complaints, he worked two jobs and even took odd jobs under the table during his off hours. Yeah, he worked himself into an early grave, but me and my mamma had full bellies and clothes on our backs.

Working yourself to death and you’re still living in poverty? If you’d studied in school instead of foolin’ around, this wouldn’t have happened, now would it? You’d have gotten a scholarship like the neighbor’s kid and had a full ride at the state college. Hell, you could join the military like your cousin Jimmy and they’ll pay for you to go to college.

Busted yourself up on the job and now you can’t work? There’s gotta be something out there you can do, your legs don’t have to work to be a greeter at Wal-Mart. If you’re not a vegetable, then you can work. Disability is for people who are in worse shape than you are.

You’re old, poor, and lookin’ at movin’ in with your kids to avoid homelessness? Where’s your savings at? You didn’t put any money away for a rainy day fund? Don’t go burdening other folks with your failure!

And at every step of the way, remember to repeat the same mantra: “If it weren’t for all them damned foreigners and illegals, all the good jobs would still be here and the coal mines would be working three shifts 24/7/365. VOTE REPUBLICAN!”

Not to diminish the American values of hard work, personal responsibility and self-reliance, but we take that to mean that individuals and families with limited resources should be expected to negotiate one-on-one with multi-million-dollar international corporations for terms of employment, insurance coverage or financial services.

So much of the problem in rural America is that most folks don’t deal directly with the international corporation, they deal with the intermediaries who pass themselves off as “small/private business.” Like the lumber mill whose boss is on the city council, is golfing buddies with the mayor and sheriff, and lives in a massive house on several dozen acres of land that he got as part of marrying the previous boss’ daughter.

Way he sees it, giving you a job isn’t about adding value to his company, it’s an act of charity on his part. After all, he doesn’t need to hire you, there’s plenty of “unskilled labor” out there who’d do the job for a fistful of dollars and a bottle of tequila a day. So to hire you is actually hurting his bottom line because he’s paying you way more than the job’s worth. You should be grateful to even have a job at all. So much of the problem in rural America is that most folks don’t deal directly with the international corporation, they deal with the intermediaries who pass themselves off as “small/private business.” .

Because each MacDonald’s/Walmart is set up to be a private franchise.

Every other year for the last 20 years, I’ve opened the newspaper or clicked a news link to the latest “controversy” surrounding a children’s book featuring LGBTQ characters that has been deemed haram by wingnuts over the idea that it is “brainwashing” kids into accepting and even adopting such lifestyles.

It is in keeping with the RW doctrines that gays are “unnatural” and since they are incapable of reproducing, they have to propagate themselves by recruiting and converting new members, preferably from among the young and impressionable.

Yes indeed. I’ve told this story before, but the only woman I’ve ever felt a physical compulsion to strike was a holier-than-thou bitch I met in my teen years who sneered disparagingly at my mom because she stopped having kids after me, due to life-threatening complications. Because no proper woman of God would only have two children (she had, I think, 7 or 8 at the time, and I know she had at least two more beyond that).

re: #75 boredtechindenver

Edit: No side effects so far.

it’s 6:50am here in sofla
i’m refreshing the publix page every minute waiting for the 7AM start time when they open up the appointments portal

then it’s ticketmaster-o-rama - you keep clicking until maybe you get the golden ‘you can make an appointment’ button

meanwhile as a public service, on each refresh they show how many slots just went at each site in the last 60 seconds and how many are left

someone hungry outside a candy store, bakery, deli, whatever, who isnt allowed through the door

it’s an inhumane kind of torture

this is for mrsdm (sound asleep). i still dont qualify

on Manchin and the filibuster (electoral-vote.com)

this part i really like

To make the filibuster even more painful, former senator Chris Dodd has proposed that during a filibuster, three-fifths of the Senate would have to be present. He didn’t say what would happen if that threshold were not met. More realistically, the rules could be changed to say that at least 40 senators have to be present day and night in order to keep debate going. If fewer are present, then cloture would be automatically invoked. Since members of the majority wouldn’t show up, most of the minority would be forced to sit in their chairs, day and night, playing video games on their phones and taking turns leaving to eat pizza in their offices or go to the bathroom. How long would a filibuster last then? Probably not even a week.

as with many other proposals floating around
it limits what a single senator could do
and forces the team to have, and show, the courage of their convictions

personally, i think filibuster debate should have to be on topic.
even somewhat on topic.

if you start reading a novel, a phonebook, a cookbook, whatever, then automatic cloture

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Things are going to be warming up this week as temps get into the 60s, which is a nice change from the cold temps we’ve been having here.

We also expect to see President Biden sign the relief bill this week (assuming that the House approves the Senate version). Media pundits are all over the map on the tea leaves about winners and losers here, but here’s my 2 shekels:

Winners:
Biden.
American people.
Democrats.

Losers:
GOPers in Congress.

The GOP refused to deliver a single vote that would help Americans recover and gain some relief from the worst economic crisis in our history - and a crisis that the GOP made worse at every opportunity. Biden delivered on his top promise to deliver relief to the American people and Democrats made that happen even with a razor thin margin.

Manchin and Sinema ended up coming through to get the bill done, and while I would have preferred that the minimum wage and expanded relief for people were included, we got the substantively same package as proposed. That’s no small feat given the GOP obstructionism.

If you want to know why the right wing media is all in on cancel culture and Dr. Seuss and burning masks and everything but on ideas to help Americans, look no further.

The GOP aren’t a party of ideas, beyond tax cuts as the solution to everything. They’re a party of perpetual anger/resentment that has no ideas beyond tax cut for millionaires and lining their own pockets. Their “proposal” to provide relief was always a trojan horse designed to delay and obstruct all while telling Americans that they didn’t need help because the economy recovered (it hasn’t - and the stock market isn’t the economy). Unemployment his higher thanks to Trump and GOP than it was when Trump took office. Unemployment is higher especially for women and persons of color precisely because those are the jobs hardest hit : restaurants and service sector.

It’s also the jobs that will take longer to recover, and the GOP is doing all it can to throttle unemployment insurance too, which further slows the recovery (recommend the John Oliver piece this week).

Last night we had comments about CV19 vaccination schedules being juggled with other types of vaccination. Wife and a friend have received social media warnings that mammograms should be delayed for several weeks after a shot. (Issue is lymph node changes confusing the image interpretation.)

Mayo Clinic is not particularly concerned, as long as everyone is communicating. There is also a chance this could be exploited by anti-vax nutcases.

Space is big, really big. The geosync birds are in an orbit about 42000km above the earth’s centre and they’re spaced about 1.5 degrees apart (it used to be 3 degrees but the tech got better). They’re separated by the equivalent distance between Honolulu and New York around the geosync orbit. Hitting one geosync bird would be a challenge, hitting more than one in a single pass would require an asteroid significantly larger than the Moon. It that happened the gravitational and ocean tidal effects on Earth would be a lot more troublesome than the loss of a Direct Broadcast bird.

For example, I mentioned the “asteroid belt”, but it’s not like in Star Wars with a bunch of rocks all banging into each other and threatening to grind up anything that tries to go through it. It’s just that there are more rocks per cubic kilometer than there are in other places in the Solar System. They’re still extremely spread out because the volume of space is so enormous.

Let’s look at MGT, Lauren Boebert, Kristi Noem, et al. When it comes to anti-vaxx and “Covid is just the flu” and “Open the economy” messages, women are just as guilty as men. There have been enough Tik-Tok and other videos showing women having meltdowns in retail businesses because the store requires masks to demonstrate that men are not uniquely tied to the anti-mask movement.

What I really wish is that someone publishes a study comparing dangers of indoor to outdoor dining. My friends and I have been assuming that outdoor dining does not present the same level of risk and so we have freely engaged in that activity, despite almost freezing to death during Chicago winters. But if there is a substantial risk associated with that activity, the public needs to know to make an informed decision.

My understanding is that the risk outdoors is low because virus loaded droplets don’t accumulate in the air the way they do indoors; they drift away.

In the SF Bay area (excellent compliance with masking, etc. rules), outdoor dining has been allowed except during stay-at-home orders, and cases continued to go down.

When we got to a level that allowed indoor dining, cases started up again. (This was also the beginning of the holiday season, so indoor dining can’t be declared as the cause.) So I’d say outdoor dining is in the clear (you can’t sit right up against your tablemates), and I’d be extremely cautious about indoor dining if you’re not fully vaccinated, and maybe if you are.

Two really good ACA changes in the relief bill:

One of the big pieces of the ARP is a 2 year update of the ACA subsidy table. There are two major things going on in the update.

Everyone will now be eligible for subsidies if the benchmark silver plan costs more than 8.5% of their income

Subsidies for everyone who currently gets a subsidy will increase

The original was only allowed on families that made less than $40k per year. That will help a lot of people.

Not all that familiar with the vaccine-distribution process, but unfortunately, I think not.*
AFAIK, the Federal Government is responsible mainly for supervising/subsidizing the production of the vaccine(s), and their distribution only as far as the state level: the mechanics of getting shots into the public’s arms is the responsibility of the states and subsidiary entities (localities, healthcare providers, hospitals, pharmacies, etc. as well as operating their own vaccination facilities).

At this point it may be too late to revise the existing process, but as Eclectic Cyborg suggests above, couldn’t it be augmented it by adding facilities on federal properties or partnering with states to have federal agencies involved in mass vaccinations? The J&J vaccine is likely to be the big game changer, especially once there is enough out there to distribute to all local doctors and hospitals.

Aside from problems at the edges I think the problem is still scarcity of doses so adding more facilities isn’t going to fix that. Basically every state has put at least 70% of the doses they have received in arms(a couple stragglers are at 69%). A lot of the reason it isn’t higher is because most states are reserving doses for second shots.

We are doing over 2 million doses per day and I expect that will increase over the next month. We just need to be patient for a few more weeks.

A disproportionate part of our capital infrastructure was built in the 50s, things like aircraft factories and oil refineries. The reason was the high corporate tax rate. If the fatcats didn’t spend their loot on something useful, and deductible, Uncle Sam would get it. Now, though, that incentive has disappeared. Money markets are far more lucrative than expensive capital projects, new equipment, risky innovation, etc.
This is especially true if you invest a little in buying off politicians to rig the system in favor of your particular scam, like legalizing the practice formerly known as loan sharking, which today is the respectable business of payday loans.

Witnesses told deputies that the husband was attempting to remove the magazine from the gun when it went off, striking his wife. The woman was taken to Syracuse Area Health and later flown to a hospital in Lincoln.

I’ve been laid off since last March, minus the 2 months I was called back. I am/was a part time back cook in a diner in a small lake town here in King Kuntry. When I was working I made maybe $600 a month. How did I live? Juggling. Lots of juggling. Since I was laid off because of Covid I’ve been collecting unemployment, and this being Iowa sometimes it was “enhanced” and sometimes not.
The unemployment will stop after the 14th because she’s reopening the diner. So here’s the problem. She closed originally because when we could do the 50% indoor seating the customers REFUSED to distance at all. Refused to wear masks, etc. Our customers are elderly and/or trumpists and they all have or come from money. So she closed the dining room and offered take out and window service. She decided the town didn’t support her so she closed for the winter completely.
We’re having a meeting on the 11th and we’ll find out then if she’s opening the dining room. Covid Kim says it’s OK, so the town will expect it. I’m 60 and fairly healthy-ish and I won’t be getting the vaccine until summer. My son the worrier and my DiL the nurse are trying to persuade me not to go back. Since September I’ve been getting widow’s SS benefits which are twice as much as what I was earning at that job, so I don’t HAVE to go back.
If she’s going to open the dining room I won’t go back. I’m just not going to tell her until Sunday after I do my last unemployment claim. I will be officially retired and will supplement my income with my handmade rugs which I will sell on some Etsy alternative. And I will take a small vacation…my first one since my honeymoon 38 years ago. I’m thinking Denver. I won’t say why Denver. Because I don’t want to drive to Illinois, that’s why.

And that’s why one of the major rules of gun safety is NEVER FUCKING POINT A GUN (loaded OR unloaded) AT SOMEONE.

In the category “It’s always negligence, never accidental” from the well-regulated militia:

Wyoming man accidentally shoots wife while visiting Otoe County home (Omaha World-Herald)

there are no firearm accidents. they can all be traced to loss of control of your weapon.
there are (virtually) no automobile accidents. they are crashes.

I don’t know if those companies are associated with Kemp or not, but since he’s been in office, more Georgians are without healthcare and it could be fixed with a Medicaid/care expansion. He refuses.

I will also be a pedant and say that not all airliner crashes can be defined as controlled. Mechanical failure can cause the flight into terrain to be quite uncontrolled.

I’ve had several ideas for investment projects that would work with a higher tax rate but which don’t really make sense in the current environment.

Same here, and the people voted overwhelmingly for Medicaid expansion two years ago. Gov. Ricketts keeps delaying it by requiring study after study to see how they can means test it or put in a work requirement (which was just struck down by the courts).
