Forgive me for saying this, but the U.S. Capitol should have a full-time military guard, rotated at regular shifts. Not a significant presence, but a bona fide military one. Any call for assistance should be answered immediately by military command.

Reply to an early CL

He’s draining the funding to where it will be just his petty grievances against the existing GOP that will be recruiting and footing the bill for 2022.

But with an economy humming along at a post-1986 annualized record of 6 percent in 2022, the Biden administration will reap the rewards and reverse all traditional losses in the House and Senate.

Of course, Chuck Todd will wonder why these gains reflect a poor performance and problem moving forward for Democrats.

That would sharpen up the issues next time a GOP president runs off the rails. Does the military capitol guard

1) Defy their president and stay true to the oaths they swore, or

2) Arrest and/or gun down Congress to install their president as dictator?

I am actually thinking this is an example of flipping a picture. We used to do it a lot in high school when I worked on the newspaper. The picture would be flipped to provide a better flow to the page. If you had the face looking out of the page, it was distracting. Of course, you couldn’t flip a picture if the person was wearing a t-shirt with words on it…

So, basically, there’s a lot of things to criticize Crenshaw about. This is probably not one of them. ETA: Unless it was his office that sent out the two pictures like that. Then, that was just stupid.

when I was in 8th grade, I got a whim to read all the “banned in Boston” books. The librarian wouldn’t let me check them out, until mom went to the library and gave them written authorization to let me read anything I wanted. (Tom Jones! Lady Chatterly’s Lover! Peyton Place!)

In high school, the librarians kept “dangerous books” behind the counter, only for teachers to read. When I worked in the library, I got to see some of those books. I STILL to this day do not understand why P.G. Wodehouse’s books were back there. I also knew, from having read what was available in that tiny school library, what they’d missed as far as “smutty” books were concerned. But I certainly didn’t let THEM know.

It was better than 50° F up at the ski area this weekend, very spring-like. I’m not ready for it, I want more snow. Snowpack is still below average, we need it. I went skiing today at Beaver Creek, it was mid 40s and snowing lightly this afternoon. A big change is coming, the ski area might get a foot by the end of the week, which would be a good storm cycle for us. Here’s hoping.

The US Covid numbers are improving each day. New case numbers are back down to the lower levels of the summer surge, although the deaths are still significantly higher than summer but down over 50% from their recent height. Hopefully, the pandemic may be heading toward the end — and hopefully the gross malpractice of certain GOP states will not result in catastrophe for us all.

Someone posted this earlier and…

…okay, so trans rights issues are comparatively new to me, but one of the first anti-trans things I ever saw was a Crowder video (I looked into him after time he got punched at a union event and posted edited video of it, cutting out the part where he made contact with a dude who didn’t know him) where he went to a Pride Parade presenting as trans and behaved in a very manner that required others to put out with outbursts and inappropriate physical contact…

So here’s what I find fascinating.

Crowder engages in bad behavior both as “himself” and as one of his “undercover” characters, but he and his audience seem to think that his performance is an indictment of the people he pretends to be, but also don’t notice the continuity of who he is.

I point this out because it’s not just him. Reactionaries is general love to create imaginary people and attribute the imagined characteristics of the people they imagined to actual people, but also do the shit they view as bad and see no contradiction. I mean, we’re fucked as society because people can D&D themselves into hate crimes but we’re learning amazing things about the contradictions inherit in the construction of the self, the similar, and the other.

hi

Extremely local news: My wife and I have been watching “Agent Carter” on Disney+. We could get hooked on this television streaming newfangled fad.

I unwrapped my hand tonight, and removed the stitches the VA missed when they took them out. The centre of the surgical incision where it ripped apart looks like someone tried to drive a stake through my hand. Two weeks on and it’s still bleeding.

Local news:

Wyoming will lift mask mandate next week

Panhandle moves to vaccinating essential workers (both from the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Gov. Mark Gordon (R-WY) announced that statewide mask orders will be lifted next week, and all businesses will be allowed to return to 100% capacity.

“I thank the people of Wyoming for their commitment to keeping one another safe throughout this pandemic,” Gordon said in a statement. “It is through their efforts that we have kept our schools and businesses operating and our economy moving forward. I ask all Wyoming citizens to continue to take personal responsibility for their actions and stay diligent as we look ahead to the warmer months and to the safe resumption of our traditional spring and summer activities.”

The changes to the state’s health orders will be shared later this week, but Gordon “wanted to make sure the public knew of this important change today,” the announcement said.

I can’t wait to have another asshole threaten me in Wyoming after this.

Much of the Panhandle has moved into vaccinating persons classified as essential workers.

To date, 21.3% of Panhandle adults, or 13,958 people, have received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, Tabi Prochazka, deputy director of health preparedness and preparation for Panhandle Public Health, said.

“We’re working through that 1B category, ” she said. “And, of course, catching any of those in IA who come along the way. … If you are over 65, you should have received your call for scheduling. “

Ricketts defends Nebraska COVID-19 vaccine decision to remove co-morbidities category from Phase 1B (WOWT Omaha) Mostly because the GOP needs its genocide.

Governor Billionaire removing comorbidities (I’ll bet being a billionaire counts though) means my wife cannot get a vaccine, despite what the CDC says. Money trumps medical research.

MAGA Rioter Had Top Secret Security Clearance AND A Rap Sheet? Yeah, Don’t Faint. (Wonkette)

When I had a Secret clearance, the government wanted to know if I had any damn parking tickets (no). This asshat has a criminal record longer than my arm, but Trump allowed him a Top Secret clearance; a Republican party operative and working at the State Department.

(four tweet thread of criming)

Sure, some of that stuff is old — no one cares if the guy got arrested in 1998 for driving without a license, or busted for having beer as a kid. But the 2013 charges include crimes of both violence and theft, and he not only got his clearance in 2014, but got it renewed in 2019? What the hell is going on here?

It also begs the question of what exactly a guy with a security clearance — which would presumably open the door to more lucrative employment — was doing working as a Trump campaign staffer for the princely sum of $15,000. Just how blindingly incompetent is this asshole?

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Republicans voiced adamant opposition during a House debate about a proposed bill that would require firearms not in use to be stored securely in order to prevent children and teens from accessing the weapons.

Republican House members spent hours opposing the bill and argued that it conflicts with the Second Amendment by restricting when firearm owners can use their gun. They also criticized the legislation as being punitive, saying it could criminalize responsible gun owners.

Point of order: If a firearm is stored in a manner where an unauthorised or incompetent person can get hold of it (such as a child), then that gun owner is not a responsible gun owner.

No children ever come in my house and my shotgun is safely stored. Additionally, it prevents theft if someone broke into my home. (That said, no one locally would steal a firearm as there are more firearms than people in my town.)

How, exactly, would it restrict firearm owners from using their gun? By not being able to reach under their pillow and pull it out during a home invasion? That’s why you keep a baseball bat next to the bed, stupid. If your house is being broken into, any weapon is a good weapon, it doesn’t have to be your fetish toy. In the meantime, the risk of shooting your partner or a child because you were surprised or had a PTSD episode means you’re depriving them of their inalienable right to life - but what am I saying, the Second Amendment is more important than some stupid Declaration of Independence.

The picture would be flipped to provide a better flow to the page. If you had the face looking out of the page, it was distracting. Of course, you couldn’t flip a picture if the person was wearing a t-shirt with words on it…

There’s a promo poster for the original Beverly Hills Cop movie showing Eddie Murphy sitting on the front of a Mercedes while holding a gun and wearing a T-shirt. The pic was reputedly taken for promo purposes in South Africa after the movie was in the can and the only high-end cars available for the photoshoot were right-hand-drive since South Africa drives on the left. To make it look like a LHD car they flipped the picture horizontally but they had to blur the text on his T-shirt. However it looks like he’s holding the gun in his left hand and all the things like ejection ports, safety, slide release etc. on the gun are wrong.

meanwhile, because I forgot to write down last year’s AGI and then changed computers, I had to sent in written copies rather than doing it electronically, which means it’s gonna be probably another month before someone down in the mailroom goes, “Okay, maybe time to dig out the February 14 returns.”

I changed computers, but I still had access to the old computer, so I was able to transfer my tax files and pick up where I left off. My tax refund is already in my account; I have the paperwork for my MN homestead tax credit, but I’m holding off on it because MN has added an online option for this refund. However, the new tax year won’t be available until 3/15 in their online portal, so I’m hanging onto the paper copies until I can try to submit it online, and I’ll mail it in if that fails.

hiExtremely local news: My wife and I have been watching “Agent Carter” on Disney+.

I can’t wait to have another asshole threaten me in Wyoming after this.

The good thing about your story is that it does rather kill the action movie meme where someone gets shot through the shoulder with a .50 cal and is then in an action scene a couple supposed days later, operating at full speed.

Second-hand story - I have a friend who had a run-in with Chauvin personally. She said she filed a report on him and nothing ever came of it. He had apparently been violent with someone and she was a witness to the altercation. I do wish the organizers would make public the records that show exactly what they mean by “involved with”, but at least from my perspective, it is beyond dispute that this guy is an asshole and shouldn’t have been wearing a badge by the time he murdered George Floyd.

Our streets are not a war zone. That the police (and society and the media) often treat and portray it as one is one of the issues we are facing.

They *are* going into places which are socially and behaviorally volatile. And part of the job is confrontations and interactions that can, and often, have teetered over into violence being used as a solution. Which is part of the difficulty in community policing.

The police are a real mix of attitude. The job attracts people who are inherently authoritarian & can be prone to violent reactions when their commands are not obeyed. There has also been some intentional infiltration of the forces by white supremacists & in all likelihood, sadistic assholes. Add in mob mentality (sometimes labelled as ‘team spirit’) and even those who joined to make a difference get swept up in the fear mongering & manipulation of the others.

Last summer, during the Portland protests, one of my friends who lives in Portland near downtown was agonizing over getting her house painted. Not because of the protests, but because of the weather. She was far more concerned about it being too damp when the painting was done for the paint to stick properly. That was her concern.

“war zone” is hyperbolic, but in almost every instance, police officers have to reckon with the likelihood that the person they are approaching is armed. Compare this to other countries:

US cops killed 100 times more than German police in 2015

Police shootings: German cops shot dead 14 people in 2017

Police throughout Germany fired a total of 75 times at people in 2017. The resulting deaths were far fewer than the United States, where more than 950 people died as a result of police shootings.

Of course, Germany is a Socialist hellhole where people cower in fear of having their Dr Seuss Books confiscated and their Mr Potato Head figures castrated…

Rummaging through the Adult Swim catalog on HBO Max, discovered “Twelve oz. Mouse,” and I’m afraid it may have broken something in my brain.

Ugh, I really tried with that series, but Twelve oz. Mouse is where Adult Swim’s “Weird for weird’s sake” model just collapses into a black hole of its own pretentiousness.

The best take I’ve read on it:

This story is basic Biden. He is just a regular Joe who adopts a rescue dog that is having difficulty adjusting to the new reality of the changed circumstances.

This is what regular people experience in life; difficulty with adaptation with flawed yet lovable characters. Go Joe go!

Sneaky liberals…letting Iowa go through with some big ass voter suppression so they can show off to other conservative run states and then slapping them down for not reading their own constitution.

Now, watch Iowa Republicans talk about changing their state constitution to see how that goes.

re: #128 No Malarkey!

Marc Elias has already filed suit against Iowa’s brand new voter suppression law.

Iowa’s Constitution isn’t all that great either:

ARTICLE II. - Right of Suffrage

Electors. Section 1. [Every (white)* male citizen of the United States, of the age of twenty one years, who shall have been a resident of this State six months next preceding the election, and of the County in which he claims his vote sixty days, shall be entitled to vote at all elections which are now or hereafter may be authorized by law.

*The above section was amended in 1868 by striking the word white from the first line thereof: See Amendment [1]

*For qualifications of electors, see also Amendments 19 and 26, U.S. Constitution

A proposal to strike the word male was defeated in 1916.

**In 1970, this section was repealed and a substitute adopted in lieu thereof: See Amendment [30]

Amendment 30:

Electors. SECTION 1. Every citizen of the United States of the age of twenty-one years, who shall have been a resident of this state for such period of time as shall be provided by law and of the county in which he claims his vote for such period of time as shall be provided by law, shall be entitled to vote at all elections which are now or hereafter may be authorized by law. The General Assembly may provide by law for different periods of residence in order to vote for various officers or in order to vote in various elections. The required periods of residence shall not exceed six months in this state and sixty days in the county.

I forgot that I had 2” brads in it instead of the 1-1/2” I usually use and ended up effectively nailing my hand to the wood.

Manchin’s talking like a kingmaker now, having successfully and single-handedly tied the Senate in knots for a day over the COVID-19 relief. He says he won’t allow the next big spending bill on Biden’s agenda—a massive climate and infrastructure plan—to move under budget reconciliation rules. “I’m not going to do it through reconciliation,” he told Axios’ Mike Allen. “I am not going to get on a bill that cuts [Republicans] out completely before we start trying.”

re: #115 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I was not stating that to rationalize or justify their actions, just to point out that we subject police to a degree of threat and ensuing mental strain in our country (and a lesser degree of training) than many other countries do, most of which have stricter gun control legislation and also lower instances of both gun violence and police-related violence.

and another issue that oddly gets very little attention or discussion:

Namely, the inherent conflict of interest any District Attorney or Prosecutor faces when they go after a police officer.

In most cases the DA/Prosecutor’s office has an interest in working with police officers to obtain indictments/convictions. Bringing charges against an officer jeopardizes this relationship and makes them hesitant to lean to hard on the people they otherwise need to work with.

Some of it is that they’re around a lot of Republicans. Some of it is that they’re worried about being in the minority and having no power. And I get it. The two biggest accomplishments by Democrats in the last 50 years, the CRA and ACA, both ended up costing Democrats because white people. But they’re not helping their cause by not going bold on popular items. And they will destroy their power if they don’t help Democrats fix Republican attempts to restrict voting.

another take, from electoral-vote.com

…it sure looks like the Senator is playing the long game here. By rebelling against his party on some high-profile issues (like the minimum wage) and “fighting” to save the filibuster, the Senator sets himself up to “surrender” and to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into weakening the filibuster. “It was the only option left, I’m afraid,” is what he will say.

It is clear that, like Manchin, Biden is setting himself up to “reluctantly” support changing the filibuster. … Biden can maintain his “opposition” to changing the rules and then, if they are changed, can claim that he certainly would not have changed things if he were still in the Senate, but it is up to the Senate to make its own rules and he doesn’t have any say in that as a a member of the Executive Branch.

The main audience for Manchin’s and Biden’s performances, right now, is actually Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues in the Senate. McConnell is very good at reading between the lines, and he is now on notice that if he and his caucus continue with their obstructionist ways, the filibuster could be partly or wholly on the chopping block. What they do with that implicit threat will dictate how Manchin and Biden proceed.

In a letter to his flock posted on Facebook, Jeremiah Johnson apologized and announced he would be shuttering the ministry that bears his name as well as the social media accounts promoting it.

The announcement came out of the blue after his YouTube video series titled “I was wrong” went quiet for two weeks.

Elaborating upon his decision, Johnson explained, “I believe that it is a tremendous mistake to take the next four years to argue and debate and cause division and grow more prideful talking about how we think the election was taken from Donald Trump. Things started to go off the rails when the Chinese fighter jet incident happened, then the dot com bubble burst and then we got 9/11 and, well, we all remembered where things went after that.

Kinda/sorta: I seem to recall that Dubya was initially lauded by the Usual Beltway Crowd Of Idiots for “restoring the dignity of the office” or whatever (I.e. no blowjobs under the WH desk), but by September 10, I think that some of the luster was beginning to fade, as 43’s innate and immutable mediocrity was making itself unavoidably obvious. The rest, as they say, is history….

If you know anybody who is screaming about Pepe being “canceled,” read out the scene as described by Deadline:

Pepe was set to appear in a black-and-white Casablanca-like Rick’s Cafe sequence. Pepe, playing a bartender, starts hitting on a woman at the bar played by [Greice] Santo. He begins kissing her arm, which she pulls back, then slamming Pepe into the chair next to hers. She then pours her drink on Pepe, and slaps him hard, sending him spinning in a stool, which is then stopped by LeBron James’ hand. James and Bugs Bunny are looking for Lola, and Pepe knows her whereabouts. Pepe then tells the guys that Penelope cat has filed a restraining order against him. James makes a remark in the script that Pepe can’t grab other Tunes without their consent.

Then ask them if they believe a scene like that belongs in a movie that is going to be aimed at and marketed to families. If they try to blather about a “teachable moment” or “parents should decide,” ask them why kids need a cartoon character to teach kids not to act like rapists.

Another bit to hit any wingnuts with about Pepe being “canceled”: The decision to remove the scene was not driven by studio meddling or public outcry. It was a new director coming onto the film, reviewing the work done up to that point, and deciding the scene didn’t belong. This sort of shit happens in Hollywood all the time, they’ve actually made it part of their marketing strategy for home releases of their films to include “deleted scenes” on DVD/Blu-ray versions. So not to worry, by this time next year Pepe will be “uncancelled” when somebody uploads the original scene to Youtube.

Ayep. When the scene finally sees the light of day, it’ll result in a day-long blip in the news about how people can now view it on the home release, people will rush to see Pepe in all his glory…and then everybody will move on because they agree it wasn’t worth keeping in the film.

Irish Times on the whole Megan & Harry v. the entire concept of royalty:

“Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.

The contemporary royals have no real power. They serve entirely to enshrine classism in the British nonconstitution. They live in high luxury and low autonomy, cosplaying as their ancestors, and are the subject of constant psychosocial projection from people mourning the loss of empire. They’re basically a Rorschach test that the tabloids hold up in order to gauge what level of hysterical batshittery their readers are capable of at any moment in time.

The most recent internecine struggle is between the royal family and a newly disentangled Prince Harry and his wife, the former actor Meghan Markle. Traditionally, us peasants would be nervously picking a side and retrieving our pikes from the thatch. Luckily, these days the pitched battles happen in television interviews.

I mean, a creeper being humiliated for being a creeper isn’t necessarily a bad scene. But a scene in a movie being cut isn’t that big of a deal.

The DSA slate presumably won because presumably they were much better organized. Nevada has 2 Democratic senators, and a 3-1 congressional delegation.

There are a lot of SoCons still fighting the culture wars, like the proverbial Japanese Imperial Officer left on some island 30 years after the war ended… and they’ll probably be motivated by Dr Seuss or whatever stupid culture war thing happens between now and the next election.

But that is a fountain of diminishing returns. We know this because it was the game Trump played in two cycles and he managed to improve his vote share from 46% to a whopping 47%.

Most voters might not remember the Covid plan, but they will remember that Biden and the Dems got us out of quarantine. And that’s going to be something that will appeal to a lot more people than the culture war shit.

The Hill puts it thusly:

“A little-known program carried out by President Obama’s Department of Justice (DOJ) whipsawed small business for years, and to date no one has been held accountable. Federal officials pressured banks to close the accounts of businesses solely because they were ideologically opposed to their existence. This runs counter to the very principles of due process and fairness that form the backbone of our nation’s laws.

This program, known as Operation Choke Point, operated unrestrained for years. Officials at both the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) threatened banks with regulatory pressure if they did not bend to their will. Gun and ammunition dealers, payday lenders and other businesses operating legally suddenly found banks terminating their accounts with little explanation aside from “regulatory pressure.”
