WATCH LIVE: President Biden’s First Official News Conference

Politics • Views: 20,478

YouTube

The media’s whining about press conferences has been getting louder and louder and louder, but I suspect the only ones who really care are… the media.

Jen Psaki’s been doing a great job as press secretary, and it’s not as if there’s a scarcity of information coming from the Biden administration. But the media need these events for the sound-bites, and for the chance of slipping in a juicy “gotcha” question that will bring in those sweet, sweet right wing clicks.

You can probably tell I don’t really expect the White House press corps to cover themselves in glory today.

President Biden holds his first official news conference since taking office. https://www.c-span.org/video/?510139-1/president-biden-holds-news-conference

Taking Action Against Hackers in China (Facebook’s corporate blog)

Today, we’re sharing actions we took against a group of hackers in China known in the security industry as Earth Empusa or Evil Eye — to disrupt their ability to use their infrastructure to abuse our platform, distribute malware and hack people’s accounts across the internet. They targeted activists, journalists and dissidents predominantly among Uyghurs from Xinjiang in China primarily living abroad in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States, Syria, Australia, Canada and other countries. This group used various cyber espionage tactics to identify its targets and infect their devices with malware to enable surveillance.

This activity had the hallmarks of a well-resourced and persistent operation while obfuscating who’s behind it. On our platform, this cyber espionage campaign manifested primarily in sending links to malicious websites rather than direct sharing of the malware itself. We saw this activity slow down at various times, likely in response to our and other companies’ actions to disrupt their activity.

Thanks for clearing up the “Bean Dad” identity & backstory in the previous thread.

I feel like social media is turning into a lame-ass dark mirror of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where you have to know canonical references to past internet memes to fully grok what is going on.

That said, here is Milkshake Duck again, because this is a new thread and it makes me laugh.

Meanwhile, as the press conference is about to start, perhaps it’s time to check in on our good friends over at Fox News:

“Insiders further reiterated the belief that Fox drove out other key digital news employees prior to the January “purge,” while Berry plucked employees from Fox’s opinion side to edit the news website—all in an effort to enforce a distinctly opinion-heavy, conservative editorial vision.

“It sends a message to current staffers that if you don’t fall in line with Porter Berry, he will find a way to retaliate and get you out,” one former staffer declared.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to there now realizes they need to fall in line or they’ll get fired,” another Fox insider added.

“They’re knocking down the final walls of the old regime to rebuild with the new people they can mold,” one of the current Fox staffers added. “Digital has essentially become a factory of unoriginal ideas to sell bullshit with an agenda. There’s even a term for it, it’s called ‘Foxifying’ stories. People in management liked to say that it’s not a real thing, but it was a term that was widely used; in 2021 it is still used.”

Ultimately, this employee said, Fox is hiring to fill the jobs the network previously cut because “they want new, green people to shape.”

Another current staffer concurred, adding that Fox’s mission of “producing programming for low-information right-wing voters” has been made obvious to prospective employees.

“This is what you sign up for when you work for this company.”

It’s complicated. Egypt added a second lane to the Suez Canal at least for part of it.
This happened on the newly added second Suez Canal lane. Ships are being diverted to the older channel where possible, but the Evergreen got stuck at a place which can’t be moved around.

Ever Given is roughly the size of the Suezmax limit. There are far larger ships in the world; Chinamax is one such specification, the size of ships that can fit into the Chinese deep-water bulk ports. There are a handful of ports in the world - in Brazil, India, China, and the Middle East - that can handle these behemoths, which are too big for any canal and have to sail the long way ‘round the world.

Ultimately, it is inevitable that America will be taken over by an authoritarian coup, perhaps with military involvement, perhaps not. This is because there are no consequences for trying to do so and failing, so the natural response is to simply try again until you succeed.

An Uber Eats delivery driver, described by relatives as a hardworking Pakistani immigrant grandfather, was killed in a crash after officials said he was carjacked by two teenage girls in Washington, D.C.

The 13-year-old and 15-year-old, who have not been identified because they are minors, allegedly used a stun gun on the driver on Tuesday, causing him to crash his car, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

When responders arrived at the scene, about a block from Nationals Park, they found the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

I understand that he has to say that, but that’s rather a horrible thing to say.

“the 330 million Americans should always be richer than the 1.3 billion Chinese”.

Why?

China’s general income/production level in real terms (PPP) is _very_roughly_ about 1/4th of America’s _per_ person. Since it’s pretty much impossible for the Chinese economy to quadruple in 8 years at their current state, Chinese becoming wealthier than Americans would basically requires the American economy to crater and have an economic collapse that would make the Great Depression look like a love tap.

So it’s a good thing that’s not what he said. F’revvin’s sake, you have the direct quote right above your “quote.” And if you read Biden’s whole more-than-one-sentence answer, it’s even more clear.

I love roasted veggies. The cauliflower was done in a toaster oven with the air fryer fan on high. 350 for 20-25 minutes. Go by color, there is a wide range of acceptable “doneness”. Grated Parm works well on this.

Just a quick observation here before I call it a day - if you haven’t seen The Vast of Night, I strongly recommend it. Opinion: Biden excels at his first news conference. The media embarrass themselves.
The media did not distinguish themselves. By asking about immigration multiple times and echoing the false narrative that Biden had created a “surge,” they showed they were more interested in sound bites than actual news. Their failure to ask about the pandemic, the recession, anti-Asian violence, climate change or even infrastructure (Biden had to bring it up himself) was nothing short of irresponsible. They pleaded for a news conference and then showed themselves to be unserious. They never laid a glove on Biden; they did, however, make the case for why these events are an utter waste of the president’s time.

I’ll never forget my parents showing up to my school, getting my sister and I out of class, and when we asked what was going on: “Your grandmothers’ town just got hit by a tornado. We’re going.”

Or again, a few years ago, when I saw tornadoes on the menu back in fish country, called my dad, and he’s sitting on the back porch watching them go by, talking about how my mom is having trouble getting out of town because one just passed through and destroyed a huge swath of the city through the middle.

I live in hurricane country, but at least with hurricanes we have plenty of advance warning to, you know, get the fuck out of the way.

we get to party for a week before we have to put the shutters up

heck, until it crosses route A1A at the coast, we dont consider it real at all

Manchin favors voting rights, now he has to help reform the filibuster to make it possible.

You know, this may be all a long set-up to give Manchin & Sinema the cover they need.

They have to be seen to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to the point where if they DON’T kill the filibuster, that will doom America to a hellscape of dictatorship & forced gay abortions.

If the Dems frame this right, the questions getting screamed louder & louder will be “Why haven’t you killed the filibuster yet? DO YOU NOT LOVE AMERICA?”

Pretty sure that’s a joke box. Someone got a gift once where the box was for little plows you could attach to pet’s feet so that they could help move snow.

There is something unbelievably poignant to me about just one poor little guy with inadequate equipment trying to fix a situation that is so utterly out of control. He’s doing the best he can with what he’s got, but he’s just one guy, and his faithful little digger is just so tiny.

Like a janitor with his trusty mop bucket, trying to clean up after Chernobyl …

Friendly reminder that Fox News, in a public legal proceeding, informed the court that no reasonable person would believe that anything Tucker Carlson said was factual.

And now Sidney Powell is using that same defense in regards to her lies that resulted in a coup attempt that cost at least 5 lives and dozens of injured cops.

Cape of Good Hope is actually not right on the southern tip of Africa, either. It is slightly to the northwest.

So MsRedState is back in the basement for round 2, more or less same track. Round 1 was super close to a favorite beer store that had just relocated to that area, a new brewery that just opened its tap room a month ago (the hope was that people would migrate there during Beer Hog’s move), and the homebrew supply store.

Well, no it wasn’t but obviously it was added for story purposes to justify why a small group of people in galactic fighter jets could realistically bring down a moon size space station with massive firepower.

So it was a nice touch to state that was done deliberately to fuck with the Empire and give the rebels a chance.

Sen. Chris Murphy is a real good guy, I think, and Connecticut is lucky to have him. His email newsletter comes here. This is long, so behind the button.

Every now and again, I like to write behind-the-scenes accounts of my work as your Senator. The hope is that by peeling back the public relations veneer, and personally describing what really it’s like to do this job, you can get a better idea of how events pull and tug at the public policy choices of elected officials like me.

So, a few weeks ago I was appointed the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee that oversees the budget for the Department of Homeland Security, and so last Friday, I went to the U.S.-Mexico border with a small, high-level delegation to see for myself the increase in child migrants at our border. What follows is a personal narrative of some of what I saw. As usual, it’s long, but I think it’s worth ten minutes of your time. Here it is:

I’m waiting to see what Manchin and Sinema do about getting voters protection legislation passed in the Senate. Are they going to allow Republicans to continue to block voters?

Manchin, at least, has absolutely said he is having none of their shenanigans.

He’s signaled his support for reforming the filibuster, in some pretty specific ways, so I think there’s a chance if someone will advance it.

re: #234 Belafon

I wouldn’t necessarily call that one a retconn. It wasn’t explained why it was there in A New Hope. Now, explaining the 12 parsec thing, that was some serious stretching.

Yeah, it’s a retcon.

It’s perfectly acceptable for the Empire to just make that error and not go back and grant an explanation. They could assume their opponents won’t get schematics, and the flaw could be there because they’re fascists and their wunderwaffen are half-baked projections of the leader’s power fantasy not viable military devices.

Same thing but even less productive with the parsec. It doesn’t make sense, but it’s more interesting to let it stand than it is to create unsatisfying backfill: Han Solo being full of shit in the middle of a negotiation actually makes more sense than the highly-parsed explanation they arrived at.

One of the deepest flaws in long running franchises is the manner in which they become lore-obsessed and nitpicking is allowed to overrun the project of telling a story.

Also…criminal waste of Mads Mikkelson for a late-stage Liam Neeson doomed-father-figure role.

It’s the equivalent of the shady mechanic telling what he believes to be a naïve young woman that she needs to add blinker fluid to her car and he’ll have to put it up on the skyhook for a couple of hours. He was spinning the young backwater redneck and his doddering old companion a yarn with the intent of taking advantage of them.

Imagine being the poor bastard Imperial Engineer who made THAT design decision.

It was done on purpose. Didn’t you watch Rogue One? GOSH! ;)

I don’t understand why Instagram hadn’t shut down her account.

Because Facebook exists to engage. Engaging racists and bigots and whoever is still engagement.

So I missed this “must-see” presser that was going to give the voters of America vital information that was being withheld because Biden was breaking with decades of presidential tradition.

And so far, I see the vital info that we were all missing out on was that Biden will run in 2024, the press is not being allowed into immigration detention centers, Mitch has a burr up his ass about Biden not giving him a reach-around, and we totally gotta take the national debt seriously now that Repubs suddenly found religion…again.

Good to know that the press has their finger firmly on the pulse of the nation./////////

In the March 12 recording, the pilot says, “F—k this place, goddamn liberal f—ks.” He then continues, making several other curse-word-laden comments before being interrupted by what seems to be an air traffic controller.

The audio is archived online at Live ATC, a website that livestreams air traffic control audio transmissions. Though the audio is fuzzy and the context of the remarks unclear, the pilot can be heard repeatedly cursing.

“F—king weirdos, probably driving around in f—king Hyundais, f—king roads and s—t that go slow as f—k,” and, “You don’t have balls unless you’re f—king rolling coal, man, goddamn it.”

He seems nice.

Real men destroy the environment and bend it to their will. You’re not a real man until you live bathed in smog 24/7. ///

I’m interested in the part where it’s a crime to provide food and water to voters in line. How do they define the line and where it begins or ends and if ingestion of food in the line is a crime . What if you’re 30 feet from the end of the line handing out lunch boxes? What if you go to Cracker Barrel then go vote ? What if you bring your own food in a backpack or portable tailgate? Do you now have to fast 24 hours before voting like some communion ritual to vote in Georgia? Is it permissible to take scheduled medications with water while
