Dang, I b0rked the thread.

OK, well, if you’re kinda snoozy this Friday, here’s the page I just did about how Fox News is getting called out for their “Lie-For-Profit” business model

Their lies made money. They have not suffered the consequences for that. If they do not - THEY WILL DO IT AGAIN

as you mentioned earlier, fines and lawsuits will not cut it. People need to go to jail for sedition, aiding and abetting insurrection and inciting illegal acts.

The leader of Michigan’s Republican Party referred to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and two other top Democratic elected woman as “witches” and joked about assassination when asked how to remove two GOP congressman who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump,” the AP reports.

Nice, huh?

The new mattress feels great. No sagging, fairly firm. Wife and I tried to remember when we had bought the old one. Couldn’t remember exactly but we figure it must have been 11 - 12 years ago. It was time.

Dude got his first vax. Mobility was not a problem. They had golf carts to cart people from the parking lot to the building. They offered him a wheelchair when he got inside, but he didn’t need it. He has no symptoms as of right now.

We are both extremely relieved to have had the first dose.

Mine is (much) older than that — although still comfortable with a three-inch foam pad. Now that I’m vaccinated, I plan to look into replacing it.

Yeah - it looks a bit cheesy, but in a good way. One of the reasons the first Guardians of the Galaxy was the hit that it was is because it was fun. It wasn’t all that terribly serious, it was occasionally goofy…and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.

Everyone got all “dark and gritty” after Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but Nolan wanted to make a comic-book superhero film that was (more or less) grounded in reality. He absolutely hit it out of the ballpark with The Dark Knight, which is easily one of the greatest comic-book superhero films ever made, perhaps even the greatest.

But that doesn’t mean that all such films need to be a rehash of The Dark Knight.

After oil rained onto a U.S. Virgin Islands community, the EPA pulled a key permit for the refinery

ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands - Two hours after midnight in this island paradise, a cloudy vapor rose from a massive oil refinery and floated over nearby homes as quietly as a ghost.

The fine mist of oil and water from Limetree Bay Refining rained down on the community of Clifton Hill, showering the slick mix onto cars, gardens, rooftops and cisterns filled with rainwater that residents use for daily tasks.

The vapor, caused by a pressure release valve triggered by an accident on Feb. 4, came three days after the Limetree Bay refinery reopened for the first time in nearly a decade, and the incident prompted the Biden administration to investigate. The Trump administration had approved the reopening of the plant, which had shut down after facing a deluge of lawsuits alleging serious environmental violations.

And if you don’t think it’s a return to Jim Crow, go get your head examined. It’s not about you.

I can’t upvote this enough. Jim Crow didn’t happen immediately. Even as Jim Crow was being built up, African Americans still had _some_ political power, and some ability to influence things, but their power kept on decreasing. It took _decades_ to implement, starting from the corrupt bargain that ended Reconstruction, to voting rights restrictions, to 25 years later when the last African American member of the House of Representatives left.

It also took decades to undo, starting from the first African American representatives returning to the House of Representatives to… we’re much better than the 1940’s but we’re still not where we should be.

The report on the Lincoln project financials: https:\lincolnproject.us\wp-content\uploads\2021\03\2020-Stewardship-Report-The-Lincoln-Project.pdf?force_isolation=true (change the backslashed to forward to see the pdf)

from DK:

There is a lot in that report — a lot. The below is what interested me the most —

The marketing results appear between pages 7 and 9. In the end they were the number four marketers of the year — just behind McDonalds and Lowes and Tiktok. Their reach was very impressive. Much greater than I thought. Think they may have tipped 42,918 votes we needed — really?

Between pages 10 and 13 they lay out case studies of certain ads. The average ad was 30K production costs. It lays out time to produce (sometimes 3 hours) and their analysis on the effect. They ran 300 of them. Seems like some of their better ones were actually cheaper.

Go to pages 29 and 30 — that is their finances. On page 29 it is for all costs, but on page 30 it breaks out costs related solely for the two main firms controlled by 2 members within the totals. These are not disputable — they were reviewed by outside counsel and an outside compliance firm. No bullshit from people that could not possibly have known the internals — this is the real deal. 81 percent of that is costs of money raising, advertising, production costs (mostly advertising). And I am not counting live streaming, townhalls, and support they paid to help other PACs (Meidas Touch was one of them) and a myriad of overhead costs, legal, compliance etc…. All laid out for everyone. Take a look.

Now — about those two firms above — Summit and Tusk — they were indeed paid 49.7 million dollars — but guess what — almost all the advertising and production costs — they paid! 7 million of the 9 million production costs they paid —37 million of the advertising costs — were paid by them. And it goes on like that. The principals — how much were they paid? — they AND their staff got all together 7 million total — all of the principals and all their staff combined. That’s it.

This is not subject to speculation any more — this is what happened for real. It was independently checked — twice — by actual professionals. Not news paper opinion.

They raised actually 91 million dollars and spent 89 million (thru the Georgia run-offs.)

Anthime Gionet, the prominent white nationalist personality known as “Baked Alaska,” has asked a federal judge to remove a GPS monitor he’s been wearing since his arrest for storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, saying he “does not come from a background of violence” and loves police.

His argument, though, stands in sharp contrast to the charges he faces for breaching the building and live-streaming his parade through the halls. The FBI, in charging documents, noted that Gionet screamed at a Capitol police officer, labeling him a “f—-ing oathbreaker” and a “piece of s—-” as police sought to usher rioters out of the building.

You’ve seen those truck weigh stations by the side of the highway? That’s because, in addition to per-gallon gas tax, they’re also taxed by the pound for traveling on the interstates.

I dont think very many of them are active here in Texas.

And if you’re living in Iowa and buy gasohol, your car is going to need more fuel per mile (YMMV is literally true here), which means you’re going to buy more volume, hence more money at the gasoline station.

Even if gasohol is the great socialist program for Iowa (the Republicans there will never admit it), whatever taxes Iowans pay at the pump, they already pay more than if they had to consume say half that volume.

Personally I think vehicle taxes have to be taxed by both distance and weight. Gasoline taxes are a proxy for distance already.

re: #185 Eclectic Cyborg

I can’t possibly think it would be feasible to tax drivers by the mile. You’d need a sizable infrastructure just to enforce that and even if you went that far, people would just lie about their actual mileage anyway.

Your mileage gets recorded when you get your car inspected.

I make a point of not buying gasohol, since my three-cylinder car engine doesn’t like it. Smart also recommends no gasoline under 91 octane, which has the same effect (the price is higher so the tax is higher).

I despise flat gasoline taxes. They disproportionately impact the poor (Warren Buffet pays the same tax I do). I’d rather fund road infrastructure out of progressive income taxes.

Second Pfizer plague shot tomorrow afternoon. Yay for me. I had hoped for an early-morning appointment, but NooOoOoOOoooOoo. I have heard several anecdotes about the 2nd shot being the one that people have side-effects from, but I’m hoping I’ll skate by consequence-free. Maybe if I were a Republican I would get away with it.

My second Pfizer wasn’t any different than my first, arm soreness for a while. My wife said her arm was a bit more stiff after second, but that was about it.

Just watched a PBS series on Asian-Americans, fun bit of trivia (for some values of “fun”)…

The way the DREAM Act came into being was the pianist Tereza Lee (the first Dreamer) had a music teacher who was acquainted with Dick Durbin. When she found out Tereza was born in Brazil, here undocumented since the age of 2, teacher asked Durbin “what can be done?” Durbin looked into it, discovered there were thousands of similarly situated kids, so he wrote the DREAM Act, got Orrin Hatch to co-sponsor. They lined up 62 Senators who’d vote for it, GWB scheduled a signing ceremony, they brought a piano into the Capitol so Tereza could do a little concert…

But the vote/signing was scheduled for the afternoon of 9/11. Obviously cancelled. The bill never got voted on. Immigration matters became super-unpopular. Durbin’s reintroduced it repeatedly, but it’s never again come close.

re: #190 JC1

Roads are mostly damaged by heavy vehicles (think big rig trucks, etc.) Weight is by far the most important component. The ‘fair’ way to tax this from a maintenance standpoint would put trucking companies out of business. I don’t know what the best answer is; it’s a complicated problem.

One approach: en.m.wikipedia.org

Vehicles powered by petrol, compressed natural gas (CNG), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) do not need to pay RUC as these fuels are taxed at source. Most cars and small vehicles will fall into this category.

All vehicles that fit the criteria below are required to pay RUC:

Vehicles that have a manufacturer’s gross laden weight of 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) or more
Vehicles that use diesel or other fuel not taxed at source

nzta.govt.nz

Anyone using New Zealand’s roads contributes towards their upkeep. Most road users pay levies in the prices of their fuel. Others, such as drivers of light diesel vehicles and diesel-powered heavy vehicles like trucks, pay through road user charges (RUC).

The revenue collected from road user charges is dedicated to the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). The NLTF funds road improvements and maintenance, public transport, road safety, and walking and cycling.

Charges are based on mileage driven and vehicle weight. Since it’s not taxed at source, diesel is considerably cheaper than petrol, and putting aside the extra bureaucracy of paying RUC, running a diesel powered car, SUV, or ute can be cheaper than petrol. On the other hand, large commercial vehicles pay a share more representative of their impact on roading infrastructure.
