And Now, Something Delightfully Weird: “The Moon’s Milk” Trailer (Narrated by Tom Waits)

Arts • Views: 23,084

YouTube

Seven and a half years in the making, The Moon’s Milk is an entirely handmade stop motion animated short about a time when the moon was close enough to be reached by ladder. Narrated by Tom Waits, the film chronicles the last expedition of Captain Millipede and his crew to harvest the milk seeping from the craters. The action take place between the gravities of two heavenly bodies, which further complicates the attraction between the characters. Longing, missed signals, and mishaps lead to the enchantment of the heavens with music.

This month I’ve been reading a lot in Spanish about narcotrafficking, particularly in Mexico, and there’s some things that happened which I think escaped all of us because we were (legitimately) much more worried about what Trump was doing.

First, there was the arrest of Genaro Garcia Luna, who was the Mexican secretary of public security in the Felipe Calderon government (2006-2012). The US government arrested him in Dallas at the end of 2019 on charges that he’d taken money from the Sinaloa cartel when he was in government. There had been allegations, particularly in the El Chapo trial in 2018, that El Chapo’s brother said he bribed Garcia Luna with briefcases filled with $3 million in cash twice.

Now this is the deal, some of Garcia Luna’s defenders have said you can’t stuff $3 million in cash in a briefcase, and yeah, that’s true, but gee, there are suitcases that can fit the money. In any case, accusations against Garcia Luna had been made for a very long time (e.g., a Forbes writer called him one of the 10 most corrupt Mexicans in 2013 forbes.com). And after he left office, he bought an expensive (for a guy on a government salary) boat ($700,000) and house (over $3 million) AND these were straw purchases in the names of other people. And paid in cash. Garcia Luna has pleaded not guilty but is still being held, even though his attorneys requested twice that he be released from jail due to COVID.

However, the incident we all *really* missed (and with good reason, it was in the 3 weeks before the election and went until after the coup attempt), was the arrest of General Salvador Cienfuegos, who was the Mexican secretary of national defense under the Enrique Peña Nieto administration (2012-2018). Cienfuegos was picked up at LAX on drug and money laundering charges on October 15. After intense pressure from Mexico, he was handed off to Mexico on November 18 with the expectation that Mexico would file charges against him. Instead, Cienfuegos was cleared of all charges on January 14, 2021 and the Mexican legislature passed a law where foreign agents (i.e., like the DEA) would no longer have immunity. The US Justice department (still under Bill Barr) threatened to re-start the procedure against Cienfuegos and also said it did not believe it could cooperate with Mexico on information sharing due to the new law. It is unclear what the Biden administration’s stand is, but to be perfectly honest, I would think the position would be similar, because DEA agents are now in danger.

That said, based on my reading, it appears that Mexican journalists and commentators who know more about narcotrafficking than I ever will, are (a) not surprised that officials are taking bribes and (b) that it doesn’t matter *what* the government is, there appears to be a somewhat unspoken agreement that the Sinaloa cartel is under some protection. Even Andrés Manuel López Obrador (aka AMLO), the current president and head of the left leaning MORENA party, is tangled up in this. A year ago (March 29, 2020) he was in a city in Sinaloa, and gee, what did he do? He walked up to a car and shook hands with an elderly woman…who happens to be the mother of El Chapo.

AMLO saluda a mamá de El Chapo en su visita a Badiraguato

In addition to the “why are you doing this, we’re in a pandemic!” reactions, there were also a considerable amount of WTFs!?!

Video footage that went viral on Sunday evening showed the leftwing populist - who most call Amlo - shaking the hand of El Chapo’s elderly mother, María Consuelo Loera Pérez, as she sat in her car.

“Don’t get out,” Amlo can be heard telling the 92-year-old woman, before adding: “I got your letter.”

theguardian.com

My point? It doesn’t matter which party it is—whether it’s the PANistas (National Action Party, PAN, conservative) or MORENA (left of center), at least to these informed journalists, it looks for all the world like the Mexican government is in bed with one cartel. And the reasoning is that it’s easier to deal with one cartel than a half-dozen or more, and the one cartel will police the groups (plazas) underneath them which make, harvest and/or move the drugs.

And it’s entirely likely that the DEA, CIA and other US agencies know this and either can do nothing or don’t want to do anything.

Again, this is just me reading, but this is stuff we’ve missed in the transition from dangerous orange guy to sane guy with nice doggies. We’re really going to have to keep an eye south of the border, and not for the reasons Ted Cruz thinks.

I suspect some people raised in a religious culture cannot imagine that there are people who have no religion. Therefore they are interpreted as having different (wrong) religious beliefs, or that they are actively trying to deny the religion that is lurking somewhere in their mind.
It is true that many people who drift away from the religion they were raised in having a nagging feeling that there is a god out there somewhere and are a bit nervous about eternal punishment, but other people are able to completely reject their religious training, or weren’t raised with a religion.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with having religious beliefs, though they can be used for ill as well as good. It’s just that not everyone has a religion and most of us manage to live good, moral lives without it.

I really really hope not, it’s unpublishable. Howlin’ Harlan collected over two hundred stories, supposedly, for the final anthology over the decades since Again, Dangerous Visions was published. More than half the contributors to the fabled third anthology have died in the interim and the author estates are typically a mess. Generally publication rights Harlan agreed with the authors reverted after a decade or so and a lot of the contributors who could give renewed permission are reluctant to see those early works in print, if they haven’t already been published elsewhere.

I’ve got more hope for the “Rendezvous With Rama” movie and that will probably never be made either.

This is where “atheists are just mad at God” comes from. If you’re mad at God, you’re a believer. To an atheist, being mad at the Christian God makes as much sense as being mad at Zeus or Batman. However, simple absence of belief is something that a fundy believer just cannot wrap their heads around.

You can be mad at the church, though. God might not exist, but churches sure do.

And yet, a lot of people who purport to believe in God do a lot of sinning. And I’m not talking about a brief slip-up. I mean embezzling over a period of years, carrying on affairs over time, etc. You’d think if they really believed, they’d straighten up and fly right. Forgiveness for sins is great, but I think you are supposed to actually repent and not just be gaming the system.

And there’s another thing I’m trying to figure out. When have we actually had a natural disaster where the ravening hordes actually showed up and needed to be repelled with assault rifles? Yes, there has been looting when neighborhoods became unlivable and people were evacuated, but generally the Nat’l Guard provides some security and arrests looters.

We’re awesome at rationalizing. The “I’ll just confess/repent on my deathbed and still go to heaven” excuse makes it pretty easy to live a shitty life while actually believing.

It’s hard for me to imagine how anyone can fully buy into any of the god in the sky religions though, so who knows?

I was raised without religion too. I do understand the attraction as there can be a lot of positives in that sort of community, and it hasn’t been all that long that we’ve had much of a clue as to how the universe works. There are still plenty of questions that science can’t answer. Not that it never will, but people do like explanations for things.

I find the level of disconnect really high in the cases where the gun carrier says they need the weapon “to feel safe” while in the next breath denying any need to wear a mask in that same location since doing so would be “living in fear” of Covid.

This awful attitude about “criminals deserve their fate” is disgusting. The harsh attitude towards criminals is part of what drives our super high recidivism rate. I’m not saying serious crimes shouldn’t be dealt with seriously, but civilized society needs to stop with the rape jokes and the “I hope he fries” attitude. It’s not helping anything, and it contributes to the police murder rate because, hey, they’re killing criminals, there’s nothing wrong with that, right?

I think its interesting the Evangelicals won’t acknowledge that they normalized The Devil by turning him into a ridiculous supervillain figure.

I grew up with cable and there were three channels worth of pulpit hustlers making Satan sound like Doctor Claw—somehow impossibly strong and involved in everything but also just weak enough that perfunctory prayers and GIVING THAT MONEY was enough to defeat him. And over the years it’s just gotten dumber because their theology is now justifying a bunch of the shit that previously would have be seen as malefic, so now Satan is an even narrower, emptier threat.

Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Mar 28, 2021 • 2:00:45pm

re: #49 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

re: #50 PhillyPretzel

Key parts:

Apple has deemed the vulnerability so serious that it has also released iOS 12.5.2 so people who own devices such as the iPhone 6, iPhone 5S and older iPads can also update their iOS 12 operating systems.

The sudden release of iOS 14.4.2 is the latest in a series of urgent security fixes in recent weeks.

The details are scarce, but Apple says the vulnerability fixed in iOS 14.4.2 could allow a malicious website to perform arbitrary cross-site scripting. As Sean Wright, SME application security lead at Immersive Labs explains, cross-site scripting gives attackers multiple means to attack you. This could include redirecting you to a phishing or malicious site, performing actions on a site on your behalf, or even obtaining information from your browsing session. “Since this is in WebKit, it could impact any site you visit, and potentially many apps as well,” he says.

Combine this with the fact the issue is actively being exploited, and it makes sense that all iPhone users should update to iOS 14.4.2 as soon as they can, Wright advises.

Don’t wait to update to iOS 14.4.2

Many people wait to update their iPhones due to bugs in early iOS versions. But since iOS 14.4.2 is a pure security update, it’s important that you install it now. This will ensure your iPhone is protected from malicious attackers.

Apple’s features-based operating system update, iOS 14.5, is due to launch any minute now, probably soon in April. It will come with updates such as the App Tracking Transparency feature that is set to hurt the likes of Facebook by limiting how it can track you across apps and services.

Title of article on my Asahi . com homepage: “China or America: Japan’s economy being forced to confront the fumi-e*; a wrong choice will mean death.”

If Japan chooses China, which it likely will, SK will have to rethink its options, Taiwan will be extremely vulnerable.

*a fumi-e was an image (e) of Christ, Mary, or both that suspected Christians had to step on (fumu) when Christianity was banned beginning in the late 1500s, but only really gaining intensity in the early Tokugawa period. The idea was that true Christians would refuse, and indeed thousands were tortured and executed.

it was all they could find to charge him with
the first time
and the second time

say it with me:
republican obstructionism toward any kind of gun law changes only protects gun nuts.
(responsible gun owners don’t need any protection)

More Sen. Graham: “Every time a Republican does anything, we’re a racist. If you’re a white conservative, you’re a racist.

He’s actually right about this, but he has no idea what he said.

Graham’s mythical gang can also stock up on AR-15’s at the local gun show. Let’s see him Rambo himself out of that shit.

Indirectly related to my earlier post: NY Yankees’ pitcher Tanaka Masahiro returns to Japan with family after enduring “frightening experiences” including son being bullied in kindergarten, worries about how Floridians (where they are living right now) are dealing with covid. He will reportedly join the Rakuten team.

And yet, a lot of people who purport to believe in God do a lot of sinning. And I’m not talking about a brief slip-up. I mean embezzling over a period of years, carrying on affairs over time, etc. You’d think if they really believed, they’d straighten up and fly right. Forgiveness for sins is great, but I think you are supposed to actually repent and not just be gaming the system.

nothing’s happened to me so far.
i must be getting away with it.

Yes, I agree with you.

Back in the 1990’s a lot of popular gun targets had ‘criminals’ as the image. Guess what race?

Eventually white images were added to the mix. Realizing that this was not very good imagewise, the targets largely switched to zombies.

But the concept of the inner-city ‘other’ threatening the suburban and rural white gun-owner is a continuing meme in certain swathes of the gun community. And propagated by certain organizations seeking to drive firearms sales.

And again, there’s a really simple way to fix the need for food and water at Georgia polling places. So simple, yet so impossible. It would make one think that need for food and water at polling places is part of a plan of some sort….

Seriously though. The state has voting machines every single year that sit in storage while the lines persist. It’s also possible to have paper ballots at polling places, that’s how we did it in olden times. Like when I was a kid. This is totally fixable fairly quickly. If we weren’t a state full of racist fuck weasels running things.

Chris Wallace could have cited scores of examples of Republicans being racist. All Republicans may not be racist but racists certainly are comfortable with the Republican Party. That’s for damn sure.

Looks like the promised line of ‘severe weather’ is about to arrive at Chez Katz. (Thunderstorms, 60mph winds) Of course severe is a relative term. I would suspect, based upon reports in lgf, it might be classified more as ‘normal’ in other parts of this beautiful country.

Looks like the line of severe weather has passed me by. I am not heartbroken at missing the excitement.

We know who Lindsay is really afraid of.

Merrick Garland scares the shit out of him.

Yeah, but saying that he needs to have an assault rifle to protect his neighborhood from the Attorney General of the US doesn’t have quite the same impact…..

I just saw a recipe for a grilled kimchi-cheese sandwich and I am totally making this as soon as I can find quality kimchi (the Korean market about 15 miles away sold homemade kimchi, but stopped recently—I am heartbroken).

The powerhouse, though, is kimchi/natto in combo. So good. The kimchi breaks down the sticky, stringy natto and it will keep you going all day.

If the “gangs” wanted to lure Graham out of his stronghold house all they would have to do is carry a TV camera and microphone.

i’ve also said this before - the way to get support for a more robust background check system is to make sellers, including dealers, and private individuals somewhat responsible for who they sell to

not completely. not absolutely. not strictly liable.

Some.
take reasonable precautions not to sell to a potential mass killer. that means more than just ‘looking them up’

just a reasonable person standard the same as we all face every day when we interact with the public ourselves. no more and no less.

you can’t predict everything.
some things are obvious.
i applaud this particular seller.
though right now they do hide behind laws that allow them to say ‘i did what i was required to do”.

and all for just a tiny fraction of total sales.

It’s irrelevant. The QOP wants apartheid, and they will get it. The mechanics of voting don’t mean anything. We’re likely living through the last good government in America. Biden, presiding over the Last Republic, likely to pass with him.
