That took some changes since they used to be able to. And did it consistently enough that there were threats to have the monarch appoint enough peers to be able to change their rules.

Vaccine reluctance dropping across the country fast

A shrinking percentage of Americans are expressing reluctance to get a Covid-19 vaccine: 17%, down from 22% in January. Vaccine hesitancy is declining in most states.

Vice news.
the least quelle surprise thing of the day

“As Republicans make a sweeping voter suppression push nationwide, they insist it won’t have any real impact on voters’ ability to cast their ballots. But a look at how voter turnout shifted in 2020 shows a strong link between states making it easier to vote and voters actually turning out,” Vice News reports.

“In 2020, the states that showed the biggest jumps in voter turnout were almost uniformly states that also made it dramatically easier to vote, often by allowing everyone to vote by mail. And the states that saw the lowest turnout increases were all ones where it’s hard to vote—and where lawmakers kept onerous rules in place—like bans on mail voting—in spite of the pandemic.”

Old white male voters. Women have to prove that their name change for marriage or divorce is their real name. And closing off mail in voting affected people who were disabled.

Good point. It’s easy for me to vote because demographicly I am likely to be a solid R voter. Surprise on them that I’m a solid D and have been since my first election during the Clinton years. I came of political age during the last gasps of bipartisanship before Newt and Hastert murdered it.

New York state’s highest court on Tuesday cleared the way for a former contestant on “The Apprentice” to sue Donald Trump for defamation, after the former U.S. president called her a liar for accusing him of sexual assault.

Trump had argued before leaving the White House on Jan. 20 that Summer Zervos could not pursue her case because a sitting president could not be sued, but the state Court of Appeals said in a brief order that “the issues presented have become moot.”

Zervos’ case will now return to a Manhattan trial court, where her lawyers may have an opportunity to question Trump under oath. The case had been on hold during Trump’s appeal.

“Now a private citizen, the defendant has no further excuse to delay justice for Ms. Zervos, and we are eager to get back to the trial court and prove her claims,” Beth Wilkinson, a lawyer for Zervos, said in an email.

Biden didn’t waste political capital on trying to build bipartisanship in Congress when he had bipartisan support for his bill nationwide. Poll after poll showed strong support for doing this, regardless of the obstructionist GOP in Congress. So he got it to done.

I believe that he’s got right to fire the SSA administrators. That’s not the case with DeJoy at USPS. Biden would need the Board of Governors at the USPS to dismiss DeJoy.

My gut feeling is that he’s trying to maintain some continuity all while trying to move things forward. USPS and SSA are two parts where he’s running into the obstructionist treasonweasel GOPers Trump installed.

WATCH: Man throws rocks at church windows, causes $40K in damage days before Easter

An unidentified man threw dozens of rocks into nearly 50 windows and doors at a California church early Monday morning, causing thousands in damage.
The man was caught on camera throwing rocks at Cornerstone Christian Church in Antioch just days before Easter.

“The video cameras, all the surveillance doesn’t even look like he tried to get in, and he could’ve because some of the windows were totally broken out,” Senior Pastor Steve Miner said.

The church had just finished landscaping the property.

The man picked up some of the newly placed river rocks and threw them at about 50 windows on the church, causing about $40,000 in damage.

I think it goes back to the Nixon Administration: standard (longstanding) GOP bullshit about the Post Office costing too much, too much Civil Service protection, too much “political” interference, etc. (i.e. BS) - so it got spun off into the quasi-independent “Postal Service” it is today.
Which of course, did little/nothing to deal with the main dichotomy in how the PO was looked at: i.e. “deliver the mail in a timely manner” vs. “don’t lose money”

Immersive, far-right media has poisoned not only political independence, but it has poisoned the American people themselves. In theory, taking power out of the hands of a few people and spreading it among larger subgroups and committees should prevent corruption. But when you have a full 40% of the population fully immersed in a cult that thinks exactly alike on every political topic, there is no end to the corruption.

USPS was designed to deliver mail to everyone and the postal rates were determined not by distance or density, but on the cost to process on average. That’s why a first class mail to someone living in the middle of nowhere Alaska costs as much as sending it to someone the next town over in NJ. It’s not about money, it’s about the constitutional obligation to provide mail service. It was an essential part of government, and the GOP has decided that it should be run like a business, because that’s how they view everything.

Never mind that businesses routinely fail (see also, Trump, Donald J), and that the post office is not supposed to fail.

re: #83 lawhawk

I hate that “government should be run like a business” canard. Business exists to make money, government exists for the good of the people, and much of that includes doing things the private sector cannot or will not do. To accomplish this we pay taxes and for some uses, pay fees to offset cost to tax dollars. It’s not about profit.

Unfortunately I have no doubt that those thug cops would have killed her or anyone else who tried to intervene. Filming Floyd’s murder was a genius move because otherwise the cops wouldn’t even be facing justice. They would have lied their way out of criminal charges altogether. Floyd is not the first or only Black man to be choked to death by cops.

Darnella Frazier, at 17, changed the world by filming George Floyd’s death.

Her video is at the heart of this trial, the $27M settlement for Floyd’s family, the national racial reckoning, and so much more.

And, she is haunted by what more she could have done.

Tell me this couldn’t be one hell of an origin story for a black female superhero.

One of the few cops I know is a retired trooper from a Western state. She dropped me from FB because I was spreading “hate” about cops, allegedly.

The hate being I was pointing out cops know they are being filmed at every given moment and they’re still killing Black folks left and right.

We got insanely lucky that the variants weren’t more widespread before the new administration’s vaccination catch-up effort kicked in. If we had been stuck with the former administration’s complete lack of a plan, we’d all be dead.

Canada has no national ID card I am aware of. We do have something akin to a U.S. SSN but that document has no photos and nothing on it except a name so pretty much useless to ID someone with.

Continuity of government is the other reason I forgot to put in my post, and it is a big one. People underestimate just how much gets disrupted when there is a mass exodus of seasoned and trained personnel.

Not one of trump’s appointees is “seasoned” nor “trained”.

Seasoned, yes. They’ve held the positions for some amount of time. I didn’t say they were well seasoned. Though maybe they will be, with salt and pepper, if they skate from the horrific damage they’ve done and the vast unwashed break out the pitchforks and torches.

New Zealand has no national ID. A driver’s licence, passport, or Kiwi Access card is the de facto photo identification. The last of these is primarily to provide proof of legal drinking age where you don’t posses the other two forms of identification.

The standard “voter ID” used for our elections is a small card, printed on heavy paper, mailed out to every voter on the rolls by the Electoral Commission. You take it with you to the polls, the poll worker takes it off you, crosses out your name in a copy of the roll for your electorate, and hands you your voting papers.

Postal and early voting are no more onerous.

The two craziest anti-China kooks were Navarro and Stephen Moore (ok, there are many of them) and they easily found their way into the administration. But once they put up a couple of tariffs, they were only around to talk bigly and kiss Trump’s ass biggerly. We need a measured approach to China, I believe. They are not adversaries, but our most important competitor. And we need to maintain that distinction because we need to cooperate with China on a range of issues. I think these guys share a lot of blame with Trump for the anti-China/Asian sentiment we’re seeing now.

re: #152 Dangerman

The UK doesn’t require voter ID, I don’t know why it’s on that list.

We have an Electoral Register, that’s a bit like the US registration to vote system but it’s more inclusive, being resident and eligible gets you placed on the Register automatically. When an election is forthcoming (we have Scottish Parliamentary elections on May 8th, by coincidence) the Electoral Commission sends out a reminder card to all voters on the Registers saying which ward they’re registered in, where they can vote, the date of the election, what the election is for and the like.

I like to vote in person if I can and I usually take my reminder card to the poll because it’s got all the info the poll operators need but I don’t have to, I could just turn up and give my name and address, no specific ID required.

Personation is a specific criminal offence, pretending to be someone else and voting in their place but it happens so infrequently it’s headline news when someone actually does it.

That Gaetz is being investigated for sex trafficking is unsurprising. That he’s admitting that it somehow involves someone who is underage means that he’s being investigated for child sex trafficking. His own statements essentially corroborate the sex trafficking bit, and he’s quibbling over the child part.

He is entirely fucked (legal opinion).

He was trying to get ahead of it by floating notion of quitting Congress early to work for Newsmax.

The final straw of his dumbfuckery is that he botched a separate investigation by exposing his father was wearing a wire in an FBI investigation.

So fuck all of them and here’s hoping he spends a good long time in a federal B&B.

re: #268 lawhawk

That’s what stuck out to me: He’s not denying he had sex with this “ex-girlfriend,” he’s denying that she was underage. And yet he thinks his best defense is to present himself as the “victim” in all this by concocting this story of “extortion” that the FBI allegedly is covering up to protect one of their own.

Gaetz claims he’s being smeared to “take him out of the conversation.”
As if he had something to say.

Simplest explanation: He intended to “retire” to take up a job at Newsmax in order to get ahead of the allegations. But now that they’re out there, that job offer is likely to get quickly rescinded as he’s been rendered radioactive.

That’s how it worked here until about ten years ago when Republicans here in Texas needed to keep more blacks and Latinos off the rolls.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro isn’t having a good week/month/year: in addition to the country taking over the “COVID Death Spot #1” distinction, all three of Brazil’s military services resigned in unison, as a protest against Bolsonaro’s misgovernment.
Kinda like the opposite of a coup, though: usually the President goes, and the generals stay: but it’s still pretty unprecedented. More to come, I’m sure.

It sorts of makes sense, Gaetz’ claim of someone saying they have photo evidence of him with child prostitutes — assume that in the real world there are no pictures because even he wasn’t stupid enough to go there. That means there’s no evidence so “someone” saying that there are such pictures is a lie. That means the accusations of under-age sex are also lies because the two accusations look the same and one is a lie so the other accusation is false too. QED.

Basically say anything and everything like an octopus spraying squid ink, scuttle scuttle scuttle and hide under a rock for a while and hope the news cycle finds another Shiny! real quick. Isn’t it about time for another Hunter Biden revelation?

So Matty’s “defense” is that his dad was approached on March 16th by a retired DOJ official who demanded $25m or else he’d go to the press with false allegations that Matt had engaged in sex trafficking with an underaged girl. So his dad immediately went to the local FBI office, who asked him to wear a wire in order to catch the alleged ex-DOJ official on tape detailing the extortion. And the whole thing was supposed to end in a sting tomorrow that would catch the guy, which is why he went to the NYT tonight to burn Matt with this story. And is demanding the FBI make the tapes of this alleged conversation public to prove his innocence.

Atop this, Gaetz also insists that the DOJ tried to get a woman he brought to a dinner with Tucker Carlson and his wife to accuse Matt of…something, apparently hoping that Tucker would give back him up on live TV by suddenly “remembering” this dinner and the woman in question (spoiler: Tucker doesn’t remember).

And Matt babbled about how the alleged ex-official also claimed to have pictures of him engaged in sex with kids, which he insisted don’t exist and so will never be made public.

It says something that once he came back from commercial, Tucker characterized this as the weirdest interview he’s ever conducted.

What stands out to me about Gaetz’s interview…is that Tucker was effectively an observer. He sat there and allowed Matt to hang himself on live TV, seemingly at a loss of how to steer this interview in a direction that would look and sound less incriminating. When the alleged dinner was brought up, Tucker could only lamely say he didn’t remember the woman that Matt claims he brought as a guest.

I’m not sure you could have orchestrated a more damning display short of his declaring on live TV that “THE BITCH SET ME UP!!!”

And there seems to be a growing undercurrent that I imagine to crest tomorrow: That this is all somehow “revenge” for Hillary and “Emailgate.” How could that be when the whole thing started under Barr? Obviously Barr was “Deep State,” he wanted to protect the DOJ and so started an FBI investigation…that was kept quiet until after the election, because he wanted to just suddenly spring all of this months after he’d left office.
