Yesterday the committee marking up the state medical cannabis bill voted it out to the floor of the Unicameral for debate.

One Republican amended the bill to only allow it to be used for eleven conditions, rather than the original bill Sen. Wishart proposed allowing a physician to prescribe it any way he or she deemed fit.

The argument for that was, “If we don’t impose bumpers on this, then a referendum might go on the next ballot like they did in South Dakota, and then we wouldn’t be able to regulate cannabis at all.”

Apparently, there’s absolutely no regulations on cannabis in places like Colorado or Michigan.

Correction, that’s seventeen conditions, not eleven.

Both the medical cannabis and police training bills were advanced by the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee. The cannabis bill, sponsored by Sen. Anna Wishart, originally said people could get the drug for any illness that a health care practitioner determined it could relieve. However, committee members adopted an amendment that lists 17 specific diagnoses to qualify, ranging from epilepsy and cancer to terminal illness, severe nausea and severe or chronic pain.

Sen. Steve Lathrop, chair of the Judiciary Committee, said the proposal is a thoughtful approach to regulating marijuana.

“It’s for prescribed conditions. It’s not in a form that people can smoke or use recreationally. And I think that’s a really thoughtful way to approach this. The real challenge is if we don’t do something about it in the Legislature with Sen. Wishart’s bill, then we run the risk of having a situation like we have up in South Dakota where they just put recreational and medical marijuana all in one petition initiative and it all passes and we find ourselves in a position where we are unable to regulate it,” Lathrop said.

I never even wanted to get out of my chair when I smoked pot. Pot made me awful at everything except listening to records. I gave up on it quickly, but I may pick up some edibles if it’s ever recreationally legal in MN. I’m retired, still have lots of records and I want to see how it feels now.

I haven’t smoked anything in ten years. Quit smoking anniversary is tomorrow! Pot consumption is edibles or tinctures.

I LOVE tinctures because a couple of drops is all I need to quell a lot of my chronic pain. Edibles are fun, but a bit hit or miss because I’m a huge flyweight. Sometimes they can ruin my brain for awhile. But that’s OK, I don’t really mind. :D

It turns out those nasty hiccups I was having were caused by an abcess in my belly. The surgeons took great care to clean the operated area, but some bacteria still managed to hang on, and well, *hick*.

After four days back in the hospital being flushed with antibiotics and having the membrane pierced, I am home now with a little pouch I empty every 3-4 hours or so, more antibiotics to take, and no hiccups.

I’m on the mend (again), but this time it’s for real.

It doesn’t stop the pain, but does make it easier to tolerate. And it does help getting to sleep.

I’d suggest gummies, which come in different strengths. I’d recommend trying no more than 10mg at first. My MIL uses 8 mg at night and is happy. Get some 2mg Gummi
es and you can control the dosage better.

Please keep in mind that edibles can take a while to have an effect, so don’t be tempted to take more until at least an hour after the first dose.

The gummies are also cheaper than flower.

At the beginning of World War 2 my father was stationed at Camp Warren an Army Post at Cheyenne Wyoming. He got there in early summer. On his first morning there and multiple subsequent ones, it snowed.

At the ‘Club’ one evening he noted his surprise that it was snowing this late in the season. The other folks at the club said that there would likely be snow, even if just some early morning flurries, for quite some time. And that included the Fourth of July.

My father replied that he might be from New York City, but that even he wasn’t so stupid as to believe that it would snow on the Fourth of July. So they all made a bet. (A round of drinks.)

What an ordeal! So glad things are better now. DECADES ago my MIL was in the hospital in St Louis, and my husband and I were visiting. There was a teenage girl there in the waiting room, visiting with a group of her friends. She was in for intractable hiccups. They had been going for days. I can still remember her, and the fear that it would happen to me has stayed.

Oh yeah. Beaver Creek is open for another week after Sunday, Vail for another two weeks. Mary Jane closes on 9 May, Breckenridge says they’re staying open until 31 May (!). A-Basin is TBD, they’re pretty good about staying open through Memorial Day, I skied there on 4 July 2019.

A couple of days ago, there was a discussion on lost car keys and fobs.

I had a fob for my car (replacement, over $200) missing for several days before I found it.

After that I looked into options for finding lost fobs.

I ended up going with a Bluetooth tracker called “Tile”. (There are a number of Bluetooth trackers and some wireless ones, including ones that you can attach to your pets.)

The Bluetooth trackers allow you to ring the tracker (which should be on your keyring) from the cellphone. With a range of maybe 50-100 ft. If you are searching for your cellphone and have one of the trackers, you can also ring the cellphone from the tracker.

Often there is a network of these trackers enabled (sometimes a subscription is required) and if a network member tracker detects your reported lost tracker, it will send the network server the location where it was detected.

Catholics in Nebraska will be obligated to go back to in-person Sunday Masses starting in May, the state’s three dioceses announced Wednesday.

Diocese of Lincoln Bishop James Conley joined Omaha Archbishop George Lucas and Grand Island Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt in planning to end the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation on May 23. The dispensation was put in place last March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conley said Catholics have a grave obligation to return to in-person Masses “because the Eucharist is at the heart of what it is to be a Christian.”

British-American legal interpreters are hard to find, so the demand could delay the case for years, possibly even long enough that the case has to be simply thrown out due to the statute of limitations—despite the fact that, obviously, a British lawyer is perfectly capable of being understood in an American courtroom.

This actually happens on a regular basis in the countries that once made up Yugoslavia. The language situation in the Balkans is so unusual that there is no consensus, either among native speakers or linguistic researchers, about what to even call the … thing people speak in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Outside the region, it’s usually referred to as “Serbo-Croatian,” but neither linguists nor the people who actually speak it like to call it that. When asked what language they speak as part of a census, some people in the Balkans simply mocked the question, writing “our language” or, its insensitivity probably owing to distance, “Eskimo.”

That comment about Serbo-Croatian made me wonder about whether India / Pakistan uses translators for Modern Standard Hindi and Modern Standard Urdu. Basically, it’s overall the same language (“Hindustani”) but Urdu has done a lot of borrowing from Arabic and Persian and uses a variant of Nastaliq (a Persian calligraphy based on Arabic) for its alphabet. Hindi, on the other hand, uses Devangari characters and is more heavily Sanskrit based. But the languages are generally mutually intelligible (with the exception of the specifically borrowed vocabulary). Hmmm.

A 2019 state task force study found that Nebraska ranked behind all of its neighboring states except Wyoming in broadband availability. A year ago, BroadbandNow, a California-based research firm, ranked Nebraska 48th in terms of access, price and speed.

A bill in the Unicameral to improve rural Internet service advanced on its first reading 42-0 (seven senators were not present).

After Jan. 1, any new broadband project funded in part by the state’s Universal Service Fund must provide speeds of 100/100 (100 megabits per second download and 100 Mbps upload), which some senators referred to as the “Cadillac” of internet speeds.

Currently, the federal and state definition of broadband is a speed of 25/3, which was described as barely adequate today and inadequate for future uses, such has high-tech agriculture applications and business needs.

According to a recent estimate, 80,000 of Nebraska’s rural residents lack internet that delivers speeds of 25/3, with nearly twice that number lacking 100/100 speeds.

A couple of Republican legislators are objecting to cost of expanding rural broadband service, raising the spectre that areas with 10/1 service or less would not be improved.

Democratic Senator Justin Wayne upset all the Republicans by suggesting that maybe Internet service should be done the same way as our electricity (publicly owned), as corporations only care about profit, not service.

The governor has a scaled-down bill from that which is already on the floor. Sen. Wayne is going to try to bring in publicly-owned Internet service in that bill.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Authorities are alleging that a two vehicle collision on Nebraska Highway 92, that caused one of the vehicles to rollover, was intentional.

According to law enforcement officials, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have arrested a Colorado man following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 92 near Scottsbluff.

The NSP announced in a release that the crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. Monday when a Hyundai Santa Fe and Audi A4 were both traveling on Highway 92, west of Scottsbluff.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver of the Audi intentionally struck the Hyundai several times, causing the Hyundai to roll and come to rest on the roof of the vehicle,” the NSP reported.

Nebraska authorities say that troopers and officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene. The driver of the Audi, Fabian Hernandez, 31, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was arrested for willful reckless driving, 2nd degree assault, and violation of a protection order.

A protection order had previously been issued against Hernandez for one of the occupants of the Hyundai, according to the release.

March 31 (UPI) — A New York village has been barred from enforcing zoning provisions that allegedly thwart the ability of Orthodox Jews to worship in their homes pending the resolution of a religious discrimination lawsuit.

Both sides in the suit — the federal government, which claims the Village of Airmont has made it impossible for residents to have home synagogues, and the Rockland County municipality, which argues the provisions strike a balance between religious freedom and public safety - consented to the enforcement ban.

Niger says it thwarted an attempted coup just days before the inauguration of the next president.

March 31 (UPI) — A federal judge has ruled in favor of a Texas death row inmate seeking new DNA testing to prove his innocence.

U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle for the Southern District of Texas said Ruben Gutierrez, 43, is entitled to have fingernail scrapings from the victim tested. She said the Texas statute that guarantees the DNA testing of materials was unconstitutionally applied in the case.

All twelve crewmen were killed; my father’s body was recovered several days later.

Great nations that once spanned the globe have been reduced to backwaters or also-rans because they either could not or would not invest in new technologies and new ways of doing things. The solar molten-salt power plant at Tonopah in Nevada filed for bankruptcy last year and it hasn’t supplied electricity to the local grid since middle of 2019. The financial returns weren’t keeping up with the expense of operations, especially after the control system failed and melted part of the tower supporting the molten-salt tank.

Storing heat rather than electricity seems to be a non-starter for grid solar generators. Good try but…

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA4) has filed a bill (HR 281) to require an oath to God before anyone can testify before a US House committee.

Resolved, That clause 2(m)(2) of rule XI of the Rules of the House of Representatives is amended by striking “may administer oaths to witnesses” and inserting “shall administer the following oath to witnesses: ‘Do you solemnly swear or affirm that the testimony that you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?’”.

Johnson lies about this and says that this is the oath administered in courtrooms across the country (including the “so help me God” line).

This is identical to his attempt last year.

The bill to force Christian oaths into House witnesses has fifteen co-sponsors, all Republicans. Those include alleged Christian sexual predator Madison Cawthorn and alleged Christian sexual predator Matt Gaetz.

This bill first popped up last year over Democrats who left out “so help me God” accidentally or on-purpose.

Christian schools have the right to be bigots. Taxpayers should not have to fund that.

Elizabeth Hunter says she became suicidal after Bob Jones University administrators grilled the former student about her sexuality for tweeting “happy Pride” and writing a book with lesbian characters. She was fined, sent to anti-gay counseling and removed from her job at the campus TV station. Veronica Penales says she’s told officials at Baylor University, where she is a sophomore, that people leave anti-gay notes on her door, but they don’t investigate. Lucas Wilson said he graduated from Liberty University with “a profound sense of shame” after being encouraged to go to conversion therapy.

The three are among 33 current and past students at federally funded Christian colleges and universities cited in a federal lawsuit filed Monday against the U.S. Department of Education. The suit says the religious exemption the schools are given that allow them to have discriminatory policies is unconstitutional because they receive government funding. The class-action suit, filed by the nonprofit Religious Exemption Accountability Project, references 25 schools across the country.

In making their false-memory version of the past, the religious right in this country want to portray the 1950s as morally superior to today. However, as these films demonstrate, a great deal changed in the 1950s in regards to American society bucking the moral authority of their more prudish grandparents who imposed morality codes in the 1930s and 1940s (in film, radio, comics, etc.) See also the birth of Rock and Roll.

The right wing in this country plies nostalgia to sell their agendas. But nostalgia is a fluid thing. The “golden years” change for each generation. Today’s gray hairs look back to before 1965, but that is only because that is when they were children.

In reality the 1950s was a period of great change around the world. And American societal norms changed too, and trying to hold that back is what brought about the cultural eruptions and unrest in the 1960s.

Monument, Colorado is in trouble with separation of Church and State and using city property and tax money to support religious views.

A Boy Scout wanted to erect a monument on public land to honour veterans, and raised $50,000 to do this.

The city allowed him to use a publicly-owned cemetery for this.

So he used the money to erect the monument, which contains the following inscription:

“Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul, the other died for your freedom. We honor those who made freedom a reality.”

When contacted by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (an organisation which primarily consists of Christians) about erecting a Christian monument on public land, on March 19 the city council held a secret sale of the land to the Boy Scout’s family.

Now the city is making the absurd argument that because this is private land, they are not responsible for what’s on it. (Cue the Satanic Temple erecting a monument to Baphomet and see how fast the City of Monument changes their tune).

The MRFF is seeking details of the sale and is prepared to go to court to get them.

The monument also uses the seals of each military service, which is prohibited by law without the Department of Defense’s approval. As such, the monument appears to show a DOD endorsement of Christianity.

Lawyers for the town (a RWNJ Christian outfit) tried to shame MRFF for “attacking a child” though MRFF never said anything about the Scout and only addressed the constitutional issue in a letter.

Town of Monument refuses to remove religious memorial (Colorado Springs Indy, March 29)

The town of Monument has issued a letter saying it won’t remove the memorial placed in the town-owned cemetery bearing a Christian message, a controversy we previously reported here (March 10).

The letter, from First Liberty Institute, a self-described firm “dedicated to defending religious liberty for all Americans” which stands for largely conservative causes, asks the Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s founder and CEO Mikey Weinstein to apologize to the Boy Scout who arranged for the memorial to be funded and installed last October.

“We have no issue with the Boy Scout,” Weinstein says by phone. “We have issues with the Boy Scout troop and the town of Monument, and government dollars being used to place it and maintain it. And what of the illegal absconding of the logos of the Department of Defense?”

He’s referring to the attachment to the memorial of the service branches logos, which are trademarked and protected from usage without permission.

My SWAG was that each job would cost, in salary, equipment, office space etc. maybe $50,000 a year on average which is probably lowballing it but it was a number. That meant the 6 million jobs would cost $300 billion a year paid for by the electricity produced, before construction costs, materials, equipment, distribution, profits etc. were factored in.

The really cheap energy source today is gas, in large part because it’s not a big employer so salary costs are very low. To match gas, renewables need to be low-employee-count per GW of capacity as well and due to the nature of renewables (lots of individual hardware units spread over a large area of the landscape) that’s difficult to achieve.

The yearly fee works out to watching 4 games at Dodger Stadium in the good seats.

I get the MLB package for free, as a T-Mobile customer. (Perks, baby.) I do pay for a service that allows me to stream home games, but that costs me $40/year.

we are fortunate. there’s not much we do, or did ‘out’
my entire extended family all work from home.
we miss dining out but only a little - take out has worked well for us for a year because it’s mostly about the food. only some about the ambiance and service.
we dont do sports, bars, amusement parks, beaches and the like
months at a time on the road motorcycling is behind me now.
we have a pond.
mrsdm does miss her parents - it’s been 2 years. and after she gets shot #2 we will carefully pilgrimage up to NJ.

I am trying to get more work from home since the tourist season is a non-starter so far this year. (I was supposed to have my first ship tour today, they are cancelled until June)

In any case, I get out once a week, usually a weekday morning, to do grocery shopping. Period. I go for Friday walks with an expat friend who lives down the road and see my daughter at the weekends (she works as a live-in caregiver for an older lady who has been vaccinated).

Rough numbers from memory… the US uses about 400GW of electricity on average, peaks and troughs seasonally but it’s a good basis to work with. The supposed 6 million renewables jobs cost $300 billion a year. If half the US electricity demand is met by renewables with that size labour force then each GW-year, that is 8760GW-hr, of electricity costs $650 million dollars in salaries alone. Wholesale cost for a GW-year of gas-fired electricity is about $350 million (discounts for quantity!), direct to the grid with all expenses covered.

Coal is more expensive than gas because it’s more labour intensive and materials intensive. It’s cheaper to pipe gas from wellheads in Texas to CCGT plants in California than ship coal by railcar from South Dakota to Labadie MO.

however those that are being ‘purged’ not because they are not ‘in agreement’ but because they espouse a certain kind of deliberate hate.

they are perfectly welcome to be part of the complicated business of politics.
They can be people with different interests with the objective of finding a *common* way forward with others who disagree with them.

First they need to become well-intentioned people who merely see the world differently.
For that, they’ll need a value system that is in some way valid.

Then they have to accept the notion of democratic participatory (by everyone) politics and you don’t always win or get what you want instead of authoritarian and dictatorial power, domination, and force of will.

This is a lot of work and a fundamental change in thinking.

I don’t waste any energy holding out hope.

This is the one area where Bill Maher is in full agreement with MTG. He has periodic rants on how people are more vulnerable to serious Covid outcomes if they are not keeping themselves fit. He can be and is often a total jerk.

Classical red flag, when a person in power does not practice what they preach, be it vaccine, CoViD, or climate change… Lost count on how many times I’ve seen that one…

So, got done watching Godzilla vs. Kong.

Not bad - it’s a BDM (big dumb movie), your typical popcorn summer film. It’s fun, and there’s some good kaiju brawling to watch, but it is, of course, a CGI-fest (granted, very well-done CGI) and oddly, doesn’t have the goofy charm of two suit actors trampling all over a meticulously made miniature Tokyo set on the Toho Studios lot.

It has it’s moments, and it can be pretty gonzo, particularly a plotline involving Hollow Earth, which is a callback to some of the wackier plot points of the ’60s and ’70s Godzilla films (like the Seatopians of Godzilla vs Megalon, for instance). And for you more hardcore Godzilla fans, an old foe makes an appearance - and it was fun.

If I’m Delta, I’m making phone calls to real estate agents in Minneapolis (their next-biggest home base, after they bought out Northwest Airlines a few years back).

Delta is probably looking at adding capacity to their other refueling locations too.

We watched it last night and had some streaming issues. Those tech issues aside, it was a beautiful movie to watch. Far from the dark/dank night shots of fights we have been accustomed to with other recent kaiju movies including earlier Monsterverse and Pacific Rim franchises, the main fights were in daylight and clear to watch.

That makes a big difference.

The story was nothing to write home about and mostly predictable, but the scene stealer was the young girl who communicated with Kong via sign language. She was captivating.

We have been seeing a massive surge of companies doing the right thing politically over the last decade or so. That tells me that money sees which side is going to win, and that gives me hope.

Exactly. Corporate America is abandoning the GOP. It has actually been an uncomfortable, though usually profitable, partnership for a long time. A lot of corporate types are acutely aware of the historic divide between themselves and the smaller businesses and more localized interests that make up the true Republican base, ie the “high hats” vs. “the cowboys,” or “Wall Street” vs. “Main Street.” The split has been a very long time coming, since this division has existed since the early 19th century, but modern developments, especially globalization, have brought new stresses. Many corporate CEOs also see chaos and even a danger of general collapse in the GOP’s headlong plunge into conspiracist insanity and evangelical superstition.
