biden has been addressing bipartisanship from the beginning
listening to and responding to what the country wants
mostly not giving a damn what 50 R senators in washington want

if/when/as biden convinces most americans, they pressure their senators and congresspeople. this is how it should be.

not senators trying to ‘sell’ whatever bill they decide is best for ‘the people’

oh, and mcconnell’s an ass

“He’s a first-rate person. Nevertheless, this is a bold left-wing administration. I don’t think they have a mandate to do what they are doing.”

— Sen. Mitch McConnell, quoted by Politico, describing his thoughts on President Biden’s agenda.

i’d say over 70% is kind of a mandate

public polling showing between 74% and 87% support among Americans for seven elements: new job training for coal miners, highway and bridge work, increasing affordable childcare, expanding broadband access, expanding family and medical leave, upgrading public transportation, and investing in clean energy.”

Random post and maybe not the last tonight: I heard the Mamas and Papas’ “Creeque Alley” on an oldies station today (I also heard “Winchester Cathedral,” but that’s not the Mamas and Papas and will have to wait for another day). Anyway, in years before when this song came on the radio I’d have an internal debate: “he didn’t really sing ‘no one’s getting fat but Mama Cass’ did he?” Now it just pisses me off. A fan website claims that it really was referring to the fact that Cass Elliot was the only one making money—as a jazz singer in DC cabarets—when they formed, thus, “getting fat,” but also of course referring to her size. But I did more digging and found that John Phillips didn’t really want her in the group because of her obesity, so it seems there’s little doubt about the dig. And then she has to sing it with them. What an asshole.

Mitt Romney
@MittRomney
A Senate evenly split between both parties and a bare Democratic House majority are hardly a mandate to “go it alone.” The President should live up to the bipartisanship he preached in his inaugural address.

biden has been addressing bipartisanship from the beginning

The stimulus bill and the infrastructure bill have about 75% approval. Sounds bipartisan to me.

Republican elected officials are grossly out of touch with the majority of the Country on pretty much every issue. Bafflingly, even most Republican voters support most Democratic policies, but tribalism and racism keep them voting for politicians who vote against their preferences.

Trump-loving GOP candidate says God thinks she’s ‘cute’: ‘I’ve got this high-powered brain that never stops and drives me crazy’

“That’s when I realized God loves it when I try to talk in my spirit language,” Tshibaka told her congregation at Mount Vernon Foursquare Church. “He thinks it’s so cute that the only person in the world who can understand me is Him, and it gave me the freedom to just start — to just start sounding like an 18-month-old, because in my spirit, I probably was just 18 months old, and then what happened is, over time, I’d start to notice sentences or phrases, or, if you listen to it now, if you were to record it, you could tell there’s a syntax and there’s grammar, and I can tell with my brain that it’s a real language.”

There’s a non-zero chance that this unfortunate person ends up in the US Senate.

The USA might have the most untreated mental illness on the planet. I sincerely wonder if that’s the case.

I have it on pretty good authority that there is no shortage of nutters in the UK. The difference is that they can’t get guns and are therefore much less dangerous. Like their American counterparts, though, they are able to get elected to office, as shown by one B. Johnson.

I get pretty snobbish around people who try to impress with average or mediocre athletic efforts as I’ve known and worked out with people who’ve competed at the US Olympic trials and I’ve met a few Olympians too. I love people who work their hearts out and enjoy their efforts but I grind my teeth whenever someone does the “my average workout skills makes me a superior being”.

Brookings:

Identifying and exploiting the weaknesses of the white supremacist movement

White supremacists have been a leading source of terrorist violence in the United States in the last decade, responsible for 40 plots or attacks from 2011 to 2020. We argue that the threat is dangerous but also that the white supremacist movement as a whole has many weaknesses, some of which can be exploited. In contrast to jihadist groups like al-Qaida at its peak, American white supremacists lack a haven from which to operate; their international ties are also weaker than those of jihadist organizations. The white supremacist movement is also highly divided, and members disagree as to who their primary enemies are and how they should attack them. In addition, they enjoy little public support, and their violence usually backfires, making the movement less popular.

“Plaintiff’s counsel is reminded that litigation ‘asserted in bad faith or for the purpose of harassment’ may be met with sanctions. Here, Plaintiff’s counsel has filed three complaints in this case since September of 2019. The Court has not issued a favorable ruling on any of the claims Plaintiff asserts,” Alston wrote. “Accordingly, the Court’s dismissal of Plaintiff’s … claims is with prejudice and without leave to amend because in the Court’s view, amendment would be futile.”

“At some point, litigation must end,” Alston concluded, citing language from another ruling in the Virginia court.

I always thought Ray LaHood was a good Republican. He was my rep, then was Sec of Trans under Obama. His son is my rep now, and not as good a guy, though not a complete *ss. Heard today Ray L. has been caught taking money from a foreign entity, using it for a home remodel, and not reporting on his ethics forms, from back in the day.

Sigh. There went my good example.

“The Times has reviewed receipts from Cash App, a mobile payments app, and Apple Pay that show payments from Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg to one of the women, and a payment from Mr. Greenberg to a second woman. The women told their friends that the payments were for sex with the two men, according to two people familiar with the conversations,” the newspaper reported. “Some of the men and women took ecstasy, an illegal hallucinogenic drug, before having sex, including Mr. Gaetz, two people familiar with the encounters said.”

“In some cases, Mr. Gaetz asked women to help find others who might be interested in having sex with him and his friends, according to two people familiar with those conversations. Should anyone inquire about their relationships, one person said, Mr. Gaetz told the women to say that he had paid for hotel rooms and dinners as part of their dates,” the newspaper reported. “The F.B.I. has questioned multiple women involved in the encounters, including as recently as January, to establish details of their relationships with Mr. Gaetz and his friends, according to text messages and two people familiar with the interviews.”

The article mainly discussed Gaetz and Greenberg meeting women, and not anything definitive yet about contacts with minors. It sounded more like prostitution with adult partners, a relationship more akin to what brought down Governor Eliot Spitzer, but not guaranteed to bring down a Congressman.

There is actually a Virginia Democrat, Joe Morrissey, who went to jail for his relationship with a minor who worked as an intern in his office; he was also disbarred for various illegal activities. But that didn’t stop his political career. It is possible to brazen this out if you don’t care what the establishment demands of you and if the voters support you. (He was in his 50’s when the relationship started but he ultimately married her ; they now have 3 children. )

31-year-old rancher recovering from Nebraska’s first COVID-related double lung transplant (Omaha World-Herald)

The article notes he had no medical issues or conditions prior to contracting Covid-19.

Before he was hospitalized with COVID-19 in early November, Jake Immink spent most days working on his family’s cattle ranch near Fairbury, Nebraska.

Now Immink, 31, is putting his efforts toward recovery after receiving the state’s first coronavirus-related double lung transplant last month at the Nebraska Medical Center.

“It’s exciting to be here today, exciting to feel normal,” said Immink, who donned a dress shirt Thursday for the first time since he was hospitalized for a Zoom interview, joined by some of the Omaha and Lincoln doctors who cared for him.

While he has a few months of rehabilitation yet to complete in Omaha, Immink said he’s looking forward to getting “back to life” and excited to see his family.

Once he’s released, he will have to take some extra precautions. He won’t be able to ride a horse for the first year. But he will be able to use a four-wheeler.

“I fully expect him to be herding cattle this summer,” said Dr. Heather Strah, medical director of the lung transplantation program at Nebraska Medicine.

Except that, uh, Greenberg used his position as tax collector to use ordinary people’s info to make a bunch of fake ID’s, turning underage girls into women. Not sure if it was identity theft or if he invented whole new fake people… but when Gaetz says “I never travelled with anybody underage, you can check my travel records,” that could be why he thinks his tracks are covered.
