The Forehead (Gaetz) will get away with it because Trump proved that you can say and do anything. Notice that not one Republican has called for him to step down. Not one.

He has to deal with a new AG now. Maybe not. This was so bad the investigation started under Barr.

Such things take time, and the pressure will grow on him to explain himself or resign. Additionally, we don’t know what Republicans are saying to him outside the press.

Well, Trump is Trump and Gaetz is a drunken, addicted, kiddy-fiddling stumblebum who is the US Rep for Florida District One only because his very rich Daddy bought him out of trouble, he has an “R” after his name and he hates, just hates abortion and loves, just loves Jesus. And Donald Trump.

But this time might be different. Kiddy fiddling is something you accuse Hillary of, not something you want to defend within your own caucus. And those other R Reps have kids. Nobody wants to socialize with a Short Eyes.

I think he’s done. It’ll take a month or so, unless he bolts to Newsmax, but it’ll happen.

And Barr found it concerning enough to make extensive efforts, since last summer, to NEVER be anyplace Gaetz would be. Maybe because he didn’t want Gaetz hassling him to try to quash the investigation, or maybe Barr just didn’t want any chance of being photographed with Gaetz.

Fox News Guest Blows Up At Former Trump Official: ‘You’re A Grifter’ (Huffington Post, yesterday)

Democratic strategist Chris Hahn raged at Mercedes Schlapp and Tucker Carlson for spreading conspiracy theories about vaccine passports.

A Fox News segment went off the rails Tuesday when Democratic strategist Chris Hahn torched conservatives opposing COVID-19 “vaccine passports,” calling his fellow on-air guest a “grifter” and slamming Republicans for peddling conspiracy theories.

Hahn, a frequent Fox News guest, joined former Trump campaign senior adviser Mercedes Schlapp on the network with host Gillian Turner to debate the idea of issuing documentation that would prove an American had been vaccinated and could travel and enter businesses safely. The Biden administration is working with private companies on a solution but has said it would ultimately be a private sector-led initiative.

A number of Republicans, including Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, have grasped the issue as their latest culture war grievance. Carlson declared it “Orwellian.” DeSantis said it was unacceptable for the government or the private sector to require proof of the coronavirus vaccination to be “able to participate in normal society.”

See, “Bill Barr is the most corrupt piece of shit ever” would actually be the best possible argument one could make to defend Matt Gaetz.

In an attempt to be dramatic you’re using language the covers up the likeliest reason why they’re NOT going to have the moral reaction you’re anticipating: it’s not a child or a boy.

American conservatives have been fine with men chasing teenage girls for decades. It’s mostly been viewed as completely normal: if you’re past puberty you’re an acceptable target for lust; the curved lens of “won’t happen to MY daughter” is just permanently locked in place because a girls’ sexuality isn’t a concern because of her safety or wholeness, but as a symbol of parental virtue; they love the kind of shame-based culture that gives young women few channels to complain within and where authority figures either cover up problems or send away victims; and they fully believe in the kind of “that girl was trouble” “she was asking for it” just-so-stories that cover abuses of power.

There’s silence, but not because some moral hazard has been tripped—just as it wasn’t tripped with Roy Moore or Donald Trump—but because they’re waiting to see the exact level of fuck-up they’re covering for. Gaetz is a fruiting body from Trumpian mycelium with no allies in the more-masked party who he has specifically thrown his weight at—people like Liz Cheney—so there’s also a denominator to the math—is this slick piece of useless shit worth it?

The problem before the GQP is that the last time they gambled that the public wouldn’t give a shit about moral bankruptcy, Dems ran against the “Culture of Corruption” and won big. Matty already has a declared opponent for the party nomination in his district, to whom this whole thing is gonna seem like a convenient excuse to eject a problem child before he ends up costing the party a seat next year.

The wild fucking thing is…I think sex work should be legal and free of stigma.

What I hate is these fuckers that specifically create moral stigmas for sex and specific “weird” sex acts, and legal punishments for sex work…

…but also seem to really like the demimonde of illicit and transactional sex that forms as a direct result of their actions, and see it as completely normal to indulge themselves while also persecuting others.

The problem before the GQP right now is that they’ve spent weeks painting themselves into a corner with regards to sexual deviancy. They decided they couldn’t let a crisis go to waste in NY and turned allegations of sexual harassment on the part of Andy Cumono into a litmus test of one’s dedication to morality and ethics.

It’s generally hard to maintain the stance that being a little handy or saying things that might get misinterpreted is grounds for immediate resignation…but allegations of being a drug fiend and a sexual predator are cool if the DOJ hasn’t officially charged and convicted you yet.

Yeah, but that was really going nowhere, as evidenced by Biden’s victory last November and his continued poll numbers.

Cuomo is where they thought they’d hit pay dirt, since he was already facing a lot of negativity before the news about the nursing homes broke. The sexual harassment allegations were what they thought would be the tipping point, where either they’d take a scalp by forcing him to resign or they could sway voters in the midterms by running on “My opponent supports serial groper Andrew Cuomo!”

Matt Gaetz just blew up that entire scheme and it has gotta have more than a few in the leadership seeing red right about now.

Not really. The singular principle of conservatism is a hierarchy in which “betters” are on top.

That’s also sometimes written as “conservatives believe there are people who the law binds but does not protect, and others who the law protects but does not bind.”

While criminals and perverts pop up in both parties, the way they are treated are different, and when evidence is overwhelming against a conservative, they will try to take as many people down with them as they can (such as Duncan Hunter the Lesser, who dragged down his wife with him over wire fraud and misuse of campaign funds, then pardoned by Donald Trump).

Atheist humour from Laughing in Disbelief:

Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert and Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene secretly filmed an adult film titled Two Smoking Hotties For Christ. The film depicts, “How two courageous cul-de-sac mommies threw off the chains of the deep state and plunged deep into exploring each other’s bodies and firearms.” Many online reviews of the movie praise producer/director Andrew Canard’s vision of freedom, defense of evangelical Christianity, and the American way. It’s a safe bet that both politicians will win many honors at the upcoming AVN (Adult Video News) Awards.

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), the third-highest ranking member of Democratic Party leadership in the House, told HuffPost he’s “insulted” by the position Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W Va.) is taking on the party’s top legislative priority: a giant reform package that includes an expansion of voting rights across the country.

Manchin, the only Democratic senator not to co-sponsor the For The People Act this year, very carefully backed parts of the bill in a statement issued on March 25. While he expressed some support for elements of the bill, he also said that he was primarily focused on finding “a bipartisan solution” to the issues the bill addresses, including voting rights.

For Clyburn, Manchin’s statement prioritizes bipartisanship over the voting rights of Black Americans and other minority groups.

“I’m insulted when he tells me that it’s more important to maintain a relationship with the minority in the U.S. Senate than it is for you to maintain a relationship with the minority of voters in America,” Clyburn said in an interview. “That’s insulting to me.”

Of all the parts of this whole scandal, that is the one is likely to do Gaetz in. Among the unspoken rules of modern conservatism is the one that goes “don’t shit where you eat.” Few things set off the party’s rich donor class more than finding out that their money is funding your perversions. And few things will provoke the leadership to cut you loose than the worry that failing to do so might lead to those same donors cutting off donations until the matter is “dealt with.”

Gaetz isn’t going to resign, at least not based upon what we know now. After all, he got this far with people knowing just what sort of fratboy douchebag he is. But predictions that he’ll weather this storm depend largely upon the idea that the DOJ investigation goes nowhere and we never learn the identity of his victim(s).

Roy Moore did manage to lose to Doug Jones — but he received an overwhelming majority of the white vote. You can always count on white conservatives supporting any outrageous behavior of white Republican candidates who have a consistent record favoring white supremacy and theocracy.

From Friendly Atheist:

Online “Boot Camp” Teaches Anti-Vaxxers How to Spread COVID Conspiracy Theories

It’s no secret that conspiracy theories and misinformation concerning COVID-19 are rampant (however much we might wish we didn’t have to live with this cursed knowledge). But it gets worse.

Some anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists are actively trying to boost the spread of anti-vaxxer pseudoscience by teaching like-minded people how to argue convincingly for their anti-science position… and despite the precarious economic times, people are forking over good money for the chance to learn.

That’s according to CBC journalists Katie Pedersen, Eric Szeto, and Asha Tomlinson, who took part in one such course for a Marketplace (goes to the CBC) investigation. The course — Mastering Vaccine Info Boot Camp, offered by Ohio osteopath Sherri Tenpenny — has existed since 2017, but its current iteration is focused specifically on COVID-19 and the vaccines against it that have become available in recent weeks.

Fans of the Niven books will trash it, I bet.

That short interview mentioned the Amazon “LOTR” project, but that project is a good example of such kinds of fans - and there are a lot of Tolkien fans - already bemoaning what Amazon will bring. Some of that is based on the casting call by Amazon (which apparently mentioned requirements for nudity and sex scenes) and some of the actor choices already. A few of them have, gasp, more melanin in their skin than the actors in the PJ movies.

And Tolkien fans do rightly point out that the Amazon project is not “Lord Of The Rings”. Instead, Amazon was green-lit by the Tolkien estate to do a series on the second-age, which in Tolkien’s universe has minimal description.

Anyway, as many people I have awaited a screen adaptation of Niven’s books. Maybe someday we’ll finally seen some.

just to be clear: having sex with a 17 year-old is not pedophilia, and we need to stop talking about it like it is. In our society, it’s rather gross for an older man to do so, and it’s illegal because we’ve determined that the age of consent is 18, but it’s not “kiddy fiddling” or pedophilia. It’s just against the law for anyone older than I think 19, which is why older boyfriends sometimes find themselves having to deal with statutory rape allegations from angry parents.

What they’re doing is weighing the odds, which in this case are pretty stacked against Gaetz. The DOJ’s confirmed that there’s an investigation, and that it’s been going on for awhile. And that Greenberg just got hit with a third superseding indictment yesterday, which means he’s under a lot of pressure to make a deal to help the DOJ catch a bigger fish. So they’re going to put as much space between themselves and him as possible until he’s either cleared…or the DOJ indicts him.

just to be clear: having sex with a 17 year-old is not pedophilia, and we need to stop talking about it like it is.

But I seem to recall some information that the girl was 14 when they began to have contact, which complicates things…

It is against federal law to transport a seventeen year old across state lines for sex.

Paedophilia is the attraction to minors before puberty. Libertarians sometimes try to parse it as ephebophilia. The specific wording doesn’t matter, they are both minors.

18 U.S. Code § 2423 - Transportation of minors

(a) Transportation With Intent To Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity.—
A person who knowingly transports an individual who has not attained the age of 18 years in interstate or foreign commerce, or in any commonwealth, territory or possession of the United States, with intent that the individual engage in prostitution, or in any sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense, shall be fined under this title and imprisoned not less than 10 years or for life.

What would it take to get you to vote in the next election? How about a $20 fine if you neglected the civic duty?

Mandatory voting with a potential monetary penalty is just one of about 30 election-related bills that have been submitted to the General Assembly this session.

I realize I am a white man and may not understand everything, but, even though Biden’s cabinet only contains 5 straight white men out of 15 members, the criticism is that he doesn’t have an Asian American or Pacific Islander. Sometimes, you’re just going to decide that you can’t find someone you think is a good fit. At some level, doesn’t the diversity he has in the cabinet - and his Vice President - mean he’s got the interests of even the groups not directly represented covered?

If the state law is that sex with someone under the age of consent is rape, then it doesn’t matter if the person is 16, 12, or 10, except as to the degree of the crime. Some of these sex crime laws have differential ages, where if the person over age of consent is x number of years above the age of consent, then there’s higher penalties. In this case, we’re talking about Gaetz who was well above age of consent, having sex with someone under age of consent. That’s statutory rape. Period.

Would you like to also argue over whether the correct term is “magazine” or “clip”? Or how an AR-15 is not an “assault rifle” because it lacks the option for burst/automatic fire? These are debates, just as that between “paedophilia” and “ephebophilia,” that are intended to do two things: Argue that the ignorance of the party that does not use the “correct” term means they cannot intelligently weigh in on a discussion of policy/law or to confuse the issue by using terms that are less commonly used and thus do not carry the same negative connotations as their “incorrect” counterparts.

Or, in short, I don’t give a flying fuck how it might pain you to hear the “lazy definition” used.

- the latest poll indicates that 25% of the U.S. population will refuse to be vaccinated. This will help keep COVID around for a few more months.

-COVID fatigue is the new pandemic. People are heading back to work, the beach, restaurants, bars and hair salons. The downward pressure on R0, from vaccinations and the protection afforded by having been infected, is being offset by less careful behavior.
….

We must to get R0 less than 1.0. If you want to be part of the solution, continue social distancing protocols, even after being vaccinated. We need a drop, in new cases and deaths, of about 90% from current levels prior to being able to relax. Unfortunately, I have little evidence that enough Americans are willing to do what is necessary to stop COVID. Until then, I will dream of lying on a beach in Australia where COVID-19 was effectively eradicated six months ago. **Even now, if the U.S. would really shut down for a month or so, this would all be over, but there is no way that will ever happen**

Evangelical Christians and small-government activists, among the fiercest critics of President Joe Biden and the Democratic Congress, are finding solace in $1,400 stimulus checks that some are sharing with churches and political causes.
In a January Bible study livestream, Virginia pastor E.W. Jackson said a pair of Georgians headed for the U.S. Senate were “demoniacally possessed” and their fellow Democrats were “cursing” the country by supporting abortion access and gay rights. Newly minted senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff were key to Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which passed the evenly divided Senate with no Republican support.

But as the stimulus checks they enabled arrive, Jackson, said his followers should have no qualms about accepting the Democrats’ largess — and passing 10% to his ministry, the 100-member Called Church of Chesapeake.

“They tithe the income they have coming in. That includes the stimulus,” said Jackson, 69, the founder of a conservative political-action committee and an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate and Virginia lieutenant governor. “Whenever God gives us increase, whatever the source might be, we give some to God to acknowledge that it comes from him.

One of the epidemiologists who was doing modelling on the new-at-the-time COVID-19 which was spreading around the world in March last year was asked about shutting things down and re-opening them repeatedly to try and control the epidemic. He was very blunt about it, “You get one lockdown. I will say that I rarely hear anybody insist on the term “ephebophilia” that isn’t a skeevy grown man trying to argue that it should be legal for him to date and bang 17 yr olds because “pedophilia” only applies to kids and he thinks age of consent laws are wrong for saying that a “woman” of 17 can’t consent to sex.

Jerry Seinfeld began dating his now-wife when she was 17; but I’m sure he was sensible enough to avoid sex until she was legal age.

Not so sure about Celine Dion; her husband was 25 years her senior, and he began managing her when she was 12. They both swore repeatedly he didn’t touch her until she was of age, but I’m skeptical.

One of the epidemiologists who was doing modelling on the new-at-the-time COVID-19 which was spreading around the world in March last year was asked about shutting things down and re-opening them repeatedly to try and control the epidemic. He was very blunt about it, “You get one lockdown. One.” After that the fear wears off, the disease, the sicknesses and deaths become the new normal and people get tired of making the effort to prevent the spread continuing, second and third waves.

You can do it once only if the disease is confined to your nation. But if there is a raging worldwide pandemic where other nations are not having effective lockdowns, your nation has to bar others from entering its borders or make sure that anyone who returns from abroad isolates themselves preferably at the airport; otherwise the disease will resurface. And even then, there is a danger that travelers will unknowingly infect others at the airport or in transit to wherever they are quarantining.

re: #104 lawhawk

If the state law is that sex with someone under the age of consent is rape, then it doesn’t matter if the person is 16, 12, or 10, except as to the degree of the crime. Some of these sex crime laws have differential ages, where if the person over age of consent is x number of years above the age of consent, then there’s higher penalties. In this case, we’re talking about Gaetz who was well above age of consent, having sex with someone under age of consent. That’s statutory rape. Period.

Statutory rape, I agree.

If people can lose their jobs over marijuana use, this certainly requires the same standard.

But people have been tossing around the word “pedophilia,” and that’s another matter. A 17-year old is a physiological adult, and sex with a 17-year old victim just isn’t that. Lumping them together blurs the category of a truly vile crime.

Adults can disagree. The best and only thing adults can do is take the jab or jabs. Vaccinations are all that works. Everything else is noise.

Australia had two lockdowns and succeeded in getting the disease under control before there was a vaccine. They opened up prematurely after the first lockdown and then imposed a second one — and the nation seems to be doing just fine.

One of our problems here was that we never had a true nationwide lockdown or nationwide mask mandate. Any state or community that refused to comply remained a source for a new spread. Until the whole world is vaccinated, we remain at risk for a new deadlier strain that is not controlled by current vaccines.

And didn’t much of our problem arise because adults did disagree — the adults that refused to wear a mask and social distance because they thought restrictions were a limitation on their freedom.

I would argue that Delta doesn’t need to impose those requirements because the government does it for them (which is as it should be). I remember flying back when hijacking planes became a thing, and I’m pretty sure it was the airlines cracking down, before the government put uniform restrictions in place. I am not a lawyer, but as I understand the age of consent is between 14 and 17 in most places however many jurisdictions have more specific restrictions like for example statutory rape still applies if the other party is four or more years older than the consenting minor.

Apparently this is done so that a sexual relationship between say an 18 year old man and a 16 year old girl (which of course happens) is not considered illegal but a 30 something man creeping on a 17 year old would be.

Some of them, sure. But as a 17-year-old you also couldn’t vote, get married, sign a lease, join the military, or get non-emergency medical care without parental co-sign. We have to draw the line somewhere, and the fact that some percentage of those below the line have emotional and intellectual capacity beyond the average for the age… doesn’t change that we have to draw the line somewhere, and we can’t individually examine everyone who thinks they should be above the line.

(also, the statutory rape laws about sex with a below-18 don’t apply if the person they’re having sex with is less than 2 years older. This is know as the Romeo and Juliet exception.)

I get this: We lizards are DESPERATE for the pandemic to make sense, to punish “bad” people and reward “good” people through their patience. But as someone said about politics last year, we don’t live in this kind of world. A lot of this is driven by chance. I’m saying that we have perhaps done all we can, considering how unresponsive we were a year ago.

Perhaps we’re best not to tell people to “isolate harder” and stay in perpetual fear of an unknown future. Maybe we don’t depend on Amazon to stay at home forever if we don’t need to.

For me, legal. There’s an age of consent. Whether I agree or not, 17 may or may not be legally eligible to give consent.

So you’re saying if it’s a law, it must be right?

Nope. It was community transmission that caused Australia to shut down for the second time.

As to the general case, consider the records of different states — and even regions in states. You’ll find that the covid-19 case and death rates for enforcing states are much lower than for others.

Then look at influenza this year versus last year.

I’m not going any further with this — the idea that masking and distancing won’t stop a communicable disease went out with the 14th century.

Based on what?

I’m curious—not joking—to see how France is doing with this. I base my doubt of masks on our experience in Eastern Massachusetts. We have a better than 95% mask wearing rate. We are Puritans. We follow the law.

But our case rate still spiked to 10% in early January.

I know what people will say: Everyone else was irresponsible. No. That is unprovable.
I take it to mean that our “street modelling” is wrong. Zeynep Tufecki doesn’t go as far as I do, but she has been skeptical of the common narrative for a little while now.

This is know as the Romeo and Juliet exception.)

unfortunately doesnt apply to over 18’s (in general, not consent related)

For me, legal. There’s an age of consent. Whether I agree or not, 17 may or may not be legally eligible to give consent.

In Texas at the time of the Branch Davidian raid, the legal age for marriage was 14 with parental consent. Since the parents were cult members, David Koresh (in his 30s) was able to legally “marry” girls as young as 14. He did so.

We as a society clearly do not have a handle on what “age of consent” means. As it stands now, it seems to be completely arbitrary, and has nothing to with psychological maturity of the parties involved.

They don’t have a problem:

a. if a Democrat is accused of sex trafficking by some rando on social media, it must be true
b. If a Republican faces similar charges and the Republican is a RINO, then see a. above.
c. If a true Trump worshiping Republican faces credible charges from a law enforcement agency then either:
>> the law enforcement agency is part of Deep State operatives trying to destroy Trump
or
>> the Republican is secretly working undercover with law enforcement to bring down a web of pedophile cannibalistic Democrats.

Simple. Easy peasy!

And personally, I have a problem with a powerful 35 yo getting consent from a 17 yo.

A 17 yo and a 20 yo is one thing. A near 20 yr difference when the minor is a minor is flat out creepy.

France & Massachusetts

France is doing fairly badly. The first lockdown crushed the first wave (which, if you look at the death numbers was massively bigger than it looks here due, I guess, to the lack of testing). The 2nd lockdown did a pretty good job on the 2nd wave, but didn’t manage to get the case rate as low (although some of that could be due to the increased testing rate). Things have clearly been getting worse since January but Macron has been pissing around with half measures until a couple of days ago.

How is masking and social distancing going here? Everybody wears masks on public transport or in shops. Almost everybody wears them outside.

In terms of mortality? Massachusetts is a catastrophe, the same death rate so far as Czechia (although Czechia is clearly intent on overtaking).

Dispassionate scientists will do studies in the future. They will find that some things we sincerely believed in, are wrong. That’s science. I think masking in the general, well, population will be one of those things proven to be ineffective, just as washing the groceries was. Social distancing recommendations have already changed to 3 feet from 6.

I would be absolutely shocked if masking was shown to be ineffective.

Mask compliance on public transportation is very high as far as anyone has reported in Massachusetts. That isn’t where spread is happening. We were hit severely at the start of the pandemic. I don’t think we want to be proud or ashamed of our death rate, nor use it as counting coup, any more than we want to hear about governors “winning” the pandemic.

Though part of the easier to transmit is that people are spending more time indoors with others. The same interactions that are relatively safe outdoors become much more hazardous when indoors.

Have a friend who has been unwilling to join me and another girl friend for outside dining when the temperature is in the 30’s — or even the 50’s. Meanwhile, unless the pandemic is officially over, I won’t dine indoors at a restaurant even though fully vaccinated; at least that’s my current position.

I wouldn’t be shocked to find out they were less effective than we thought(that isn’t to say completely ineffective), or hoped. Especially the way people tend to use them. Put them on when you enter a store, take them off when you walk out and shove them in your pocket with things like your phones and keys, loose change. Put em back on at the next store, fiddle with them because they itch, take them off and set them down on your desk at the office until someone comes to ask a question etc.

The fact that cold and flu transmission has also dropped significantly says that masking is not ineffective, but it’s just one part in a control strategy.
