Well, Trump is Trump and Gaetz is a drunken, addicted, kiddy-fiddling stumblebum who is the US Rep for Florida District One only because his very rich Daddy bought him out of trouble, he has an “R” after his name and he hates, just hates abortion and loves, just loves Jesus. And Donald Trump.

But this time might be different. Kiddy fiddling is something you accuse Hillary of, not something you want to defend within your own caucus. And those other R Reps have kids. Nobody wants to socialize with a Short Eyes.

I think he’s done. It’ll take a month or so, unless he bolts to Newsmax, but it’ll happen.

Democratic strategist Chris Hahn raged at Mercedes Schlapp and Tucker Carlson for spreading conspiracy theories about vaccine passports.

A Fox News segment went off the rails Tuesday when Democratic strategist Chris Hahn torched conservatives opposing COVID-19 “vaccine passports,” calling his fellow on-air guest a “grifter” and slamming Republicans for peddling conspiracy theories.

Hahn, a frequent Fox News guest, joined former Trump campaign senior adviser Mercedes Schlapp on the network with host Gillian Turner to debate the idea of issuing documentation that would prove an American had been vaccinated and could travel and enter businesses safely. The Biden administration is working with private companies on a solution but has said it would ultimately be a private sector-led initiative.

A number of Republicans, including Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, have grasped the issue as their latest culture war grievance. Carlson declared it “Orwellian.” DeSantis said it was unacceptable for the government or the private sector to require proof of the coronavirus vaccination to be “able to participate in normal society.”

What I hate is these fuckers that specifically create moral stigmas for sex and specific “weird” sex acts, and legal punishments for sex work…

It’s generally hard to maintain the stance that being a little handy or saying things that might get misinterpreted is grounds for immediate resignation…but allegations of being a drug fiend and a sexual predator are cool if the DOJ hasn’t officially charged and convicted you yet.

Yeah, but that was really going nowhere, as evidenced by Biden’s victory last November and his continued poll numbers.

Cuomo is where they thought they’d hit pay dirt, since he was already facing a lot of negativity before the news about the nursing homes broke. The sexual harassment allegations were what they thought would be the tipping point, where either they’d take a scalp by forcing him to resign or they could sway voters in the midterms by running on “My opponent supports serial groper Andrew Cuomo!”

Matt Gaetz just blew up that entire scheme and it has gotta have more than a few in the leadership seeing red right about now.

That’s also sometimes written as “conservatives believe there are people who the law binds but does not protect, and others who the law protects but does not bind.”

While criminals and perverts pop up in both parties, the way they are treated are different, and when evidence is overwhelming against a conservative, they will try to take as many people down with them as they can (such as Duncan Hunter the Lesser, who dragged down his wife with him over wire fraud and misuse of campaign funds, then pardoned by Donald Trump).

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), the third-highest ranking member of Democratic Party leadership in the House, told HuffPost he’s “insulted” by the position Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W Va.) is taking on the party’s top legislative priority: a giant reform package that includes an expansion of voting rights across the country.

Manchin, the only Democratic senator not to co-sponsor the For The People Act this year, very carefully backed parts of the bill in a statement issued on March 25. While he expressed some support for elements of the bill, he also said that he was primarily focused on finding “a bipartisan solution” to the issues the bill addresses, including voting rights.

For Clyburn, Manchin’s statement prioritizes bipartisanship over the voting rights of Black Americans and other minority groups.

“I’m insulted when he tells me that it’s more important to maintain a relationship with the minority in the U.S. Senate than it is for you to maintain a relationship with the minority of voters in America,” Clyburn said in an interview. “That’s insulting to me.”

Of all the parts of this whole scandal, that is the one is likely to do Gaetz in. Among the unspoken rules of modern conservatism is the one that goes “don’t shit where you eat.” Few things set off the party’s rich donor class more than finding out that their money is funding your perversions. And few things will provoke the leadership to cut you loose than the worry that failing to do so might lead to those same donors cutting off donations until the matter is “dealt with.”

Gaetz isn’t going to resign, at least not based upon what we know now. After all, he got this far with people knowing just what sort of fratboy douchebag he is. But predictions that he’ll weather this storm depend largely upon the idea that the DOJ investigation goes nowhere and we never learn the identity of his victim(s).

It’s no secret that conspiracy theories and misinformation concerning COVID-19 are rampant (however much we might wish we didn’t have to live with this cursed knowledge). But it gets worse.

Some anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists are actively trying to boost the spread of anti-vaxxer pseudoscience by teaching like-minded people how to argue convincingly for their anti-science position… and despite the precarious economic times, people are forking over good money for the chance to learn.

That’s according to CBC journalists Katie Pedersen, Eric Szeto, and Asha Tomlinson, who took part in one such course for a Marketplace (goes to the CBC) investigation. The course — Mastering Vaccine Info Boot Camp, offered by Ohio osteopath Sherri Tenpenny — has existed since 2017, but its current iteration is focused specifically on COVID-19 and the vaccines against it that have become available in recent weeks.

Fans of the Niven books will trash it, I bet.

That short interview mentioned the Amazon “LOTR” project, but that project is a good example of such kinds of fans - and there are a lot of Tolkien fans - already bemoaning what Amazon will bring. Some of that is based on the casting call by Amazon (which apparently mentioned requirements for nudity and sex scenes) and some of the actor choices already. A few of them have, gasp, more melanin in their skin than the actors in the PJ movies.

And Tolkien fans do rightly point out that the Amazon project is not “Lord Of The Rings”. Instead, Amazon was green-lit by the Tolkien estate to do a series on the second-age, which in Tolkien’s universe has minimal description.

Anyway, as many people I have awaited a screen adaptation of Niven’s books. Maybe someday we’ll finally seen some.

What they’re doing is weighing the odds, which in this case are pretty stacked against Gaetz. The DOJ’s confirmed that there’s an investigation, and that it’s been going on for awhile. And that Greenberg just got hit with a third superseding indictment yesterday, which means he’s under a lot of pressure to make a deal to help the DOJ catch a bigger fish. So they’re going to put as much space between themselves and him as possible until he’s either cleared…or the DOJ indicts him.

It is against federal law to transport a seventeen year old across state lines for sex.

Paedophilia is the attraction to minors before puberty. Libertarians sometimes try to parse it as ephebophilia. The specific wording doesn’t matter, they are both minors.

(a) Transportation With Intent To Engage in Criminal Sexual Activity.—

And even then, there is a danger that travelers will unknowingly infect others at the airport or in transit to wherever they are quarantining.

Australia had two lockdowns and succeeded in getting the disease under control before there was a vaccine. They opened up prematurely after the first lockdown and then imposed a second one — and the nation seems to be doing just fine.

One of our problems here was that we never had a true nationwide lockdown or nationwide mask mandate. Any state or community that refused to comply remained a source for a new spread. Until the whole world is vaccinated, we remain at risk for a new deadlier strain that is not controlled by current vaccines.

And didn’t much of our problem arise because adults did disagree — the adults that refused to wear a mask and social distance because they thought restrictions were a limitation on their freedom.

I would argue that Delta doesn’t need to impose those requirements because the government does it for them (which is as it should be). I am not a lawyer, but as I understand the age of consent is between 14 and 17 in most places however many jurisdictions have more specific restrictions like for example statutory rape still applies if the other party is four or more years older than the consenting minor.

Apparently this is done so that a sexual relationship between say an 18 year old man and a 16 year old girl (which of course happens) is not considered illegal but a 30 something man creeping on a 17 year old would be.

As a former seventeen-year-old, I will repeat what I said a while back, that a woman of seventeen can indeed consent to sex.

Some of them, sure. But as a 17-year-old you also couldn’t vote, get married, sign a lease, join the military, or get non-emergency medical care without parental co-sign. We have to draw the line somewhere, and the fact that some percentage of those below the line have emotional and intellectual capacity beyond the average for the age… doesn’t change that we have to draw the line somewhere, and we can’t individually examine everyone who thinks they should be above the line.

(also, the statutory rape laws about sex with a below-18 don’t apply if the person they’re having sex with is less than 2 years older. This is know as the Romeo and Juliet exception.)

They did it EARLY. Early, early, early, before community transmission. New Zealand is helped by it’s geography. Australia just seems to have good fortune, though even they have had outbreaks.

I get this: We lizards are DESPERATE for the pandemic to make sense, to punish “bad” people and reward “good” people through their patience. But as someone said about politics last year, we don’t live in this kind of world. A lot of this is driven by chance. I’m saying that we have perhaps done all we can, considering how unresponsive we were a year ago.

Nope. It was community transmission that caused Australia to shut down for the second time.

As to the general case, consider the records of different states — and even regions in states. You’ll find that the covid-19 case and death rates for enforcing states are much lower than for others.

Then look at influenza this year versus last year.

I’m not going any further with this — the idea that masking and distancing won’t stop a communicable disease went out with the 14th century.

I’m curious—not joking—to see how France is doing with this. I base my doubt of masks on our experience in Eastern Massachusetts. We have a better than 95% mask wearing rate. We are Puritans. We follow the law.

But our case rate still spiked to 10% in early January.

I know what people will say: Everyone else was irresponsible. No. That is unprovable.
I take it to mean that our “street modelling” is wrong. Zeynep Tufecki doesn’t go as far as I do, but she has been skeptical of the common narrative for a little while now.

In Texas at the time of the Branch Davidian raid, the legal age for marriage was 14 with parental consent. Since the parents were cult members, David Koresh (in his 30s) was able to legally “marry” girls as young as 14. He did so.

We as a society clearly do not have a handle on what “age of consent” means. As it stands now, it seems to be completely arbitrary, and has nothing to with psychological maturity of the parties involved.

The freeze here in Texas knocked my company’s positive rate - not people who got sick here but worked here and got sick from outside activities - from around 50 new cases per week, to less than 20 no more than a month later. People were forced to isolate.

France is doing fairly badly. The first lockdown crushed the first wave (which, if you look at the death numbers was massively bigger than it looks here due, I guess, to the lack of testing). The 2nd lockdown did a pretty good job on the 2nd wave, but didn’t manage to get the case rate as low (although some of that could be due to the increased testing rate). Things have clearly been getting worse since January but Macron has been pissing around with half measures until a couple of days ago.

How is masking and social distancing going here? Everybody wears masks on public transport or in shops. Almost everybody wears them outside.

In terms of mortality? Massachusetts is a catastrophe, the same death rate so far as Czechia (although Czechia is clearly intent on overtaking).

Mask compliance on public transportation is very high as far as anyone has reported in Massachusetts. That isn’t where spread is happening. We were hit severely at the start of the pandemic. I don’t think we want to be proud or ashamed of our death rate, nor use it as counting coup, any more than we want to hear about governors “winning” the pandemic.

Though part of the easier to transmit is that people are spending more time indoors with others. The same interactions that are relatively safe outdoors become much more hazardous when indoors.

Have a friend who has been unwilling to join me and another girl friend for outside dining when the temperature is in the 30’s — or even the 50’s. Meanwhile, unless the pandemic is officially over, I won’t dine indoors at a restaurant even though fully vaccinated; at least that’s my current position.

I wouldn’t be shocked to find out they were less effective than we thought(that isn’t to say completely ineffective), or hoped. Especially the way people tend to use them. Put them on when you enter a store, take them off when you walk out and shove them in your pocket with things like your phones and keys, loose change. Put em back on at the next store, fiddle with them because they itch, take them off and set them down on your desk at the office until someone comes to ask a question etc.

Spread is happening, but I only know where it is not. Not in public transit, and not in my downtown. The city would tell me if it were in my building. From what I’ve read, a small number of people cause the most spread.

The second was valued at $600 per adult earning up to $75,000 ($1,200 for couples earning up to $150,000) and $600 per child. After those income limits, the payments phase out.
