A 7% rise in the corporate tax rate, on a corporation making billions a year, amounts to a couple of hundred million dollars. It’s chump change to them to pay another lawyer a million dollars to figure out how to get them a couple hundred million in tax breaks. And then they get the benefit of having supported a popular bill, and they don’t have to pay for it!

Looks like if everything goes right, California will “reopen” on June 15. Though there may still be mask requirements.

The light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible.

I was just linking that story. Color system to go away by mid June. It’s not too late for other states to catch up…but we’ll have a few outliers I’m sure. Waiting to see the spike in Texas in two weeks around the Rangers game.

I know a lot of progressive types have been less than happy with Sinema over the filibuster, but I sort of see her point with this:

“When you have a place that’s broken and not working, and many would say that’s the Senate today, I don’t think the solution is to erode the rules,” Sinema told the Wall Street Journal this week. “I think the solution is for senators to change their behavior and begin to work together, which is what the country wants us to do.”

There’s a lot of Mr Smith Goes To Washington optimism in that sentiment. And it rests largely on the hope that Senators aren’t fucking cowards, which recent history suggests they mostly are. But I guess the follow up question is, “and what if the GOP just says ‘fuck you’?”

That doesn’t seem to be a question many opposed to the filibuster have bothered to answer.

re: #20 KGxvi

Yeah. It’s all well and good, if your opponents are principled and their oppositions to the majority are, at worst, misguided. However, what the senator from the Great State of Denial seems to be refusing to acknowledge is that no elected Republican will ever, ever vote for anything a Democratic Party member brings forward. EVER. They are not opposing legislation on principle, but literally just because they stand for opposing Democrats, no matter what. Their pure party line vote on the American Rescue Act demonstrates this; it was a wildly popular bill, even among Republicans, and they voted no, to a man.

I’m okay with retaining the filibuster as “Mr.Smith” was required to use it. To turn it into a requirement that 60 people vote for every measure was to break it, and that needs to be fixed.

However, in accordance with the US Flag code, the flag shall be placed at half-mast on the day of and the day after the death of a sitting US Representative or Senator.

As such, the flag should remain at half-mast until tomorrow at sunset.

It’s the latter. They are focusing on all the wrong things when judging these sleazeballs “by their fruits”. They are focusing on God, Guns, Abortion, and not on the real fruit of a person’s life - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

God Is Still Using Trump to Usher In New ‘Kingdom Era,’ Says Elijah List ‘Prophet’ Veronika West

The “prophetic” Elijah List newsletter promoted a post Monday by “prophet” Veronika West recounting a very complex “dream/vision encounter” that she says revealed “that God has not yet finished with His anointed vessel, President Donald John Trump.” Elijah List publisher Steve Shultz assured readers that the dream “most assuredly came from the Lord.”

According to West, the dream involved a stairway to Heaven made up of living multicolored stones on which the word “TRUMP” appeared in gold, “in ascending order, starting from the bottom of the stairway—touching the nations—to the highest of heights in heavenly places.” As West tells it, each letter of Trump’s name appeared with a corresponding word: Truth, Righteousness, Unity, Mercy, and Peace.

On a subject that hasn’t got as much play as maybe it should have:

How Credit Suisse got tangled in the Archegos Wall Street chaos

Credit Suisse announced Tuesday that two top executives would resign and that the Swiss bank would take a $4.7 billion loss as the fallout from the collapse of a large hedge fund continues to wreak havoc on Wall Street.

Credit Suisse, which is based in Zurich, said it expects to record a $960 million (900 million Swiss francs) loss this quarter after exiting positions with an unnamed U.S. hedge fund. Various media reports have identified the fund as Archegos Capital Management, a private investment firm that went bust in recent weeks after leveraging risky positions in U.S. and Chinese media companies through major banks.

*snip*

The implosion of New York-based Archegos is one of the largest collapses of a hedge fund since the 2008 financial crisis, sparking calls for tighter oversight of Wall Street from lawmakers including Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. It’s also drawn scrutiny of what critics describe as a lack of transparency tied to some trading contracts and to family offices, the private investment vehicles of wealthy individuals.

washingtonpost.com

More at the link, but this caught my attention because when this first came out 10 days ago (Friday, March 26) it was said that Bill Hwang was a big Christian.* He’s also banned from trading, but he was able to do all this through a “family office.” It also appears he was heavily, heavily leveraged.

There’s a lot more to the story; Credit Suisse is not the only banking institution coming out pretty dinged.

Anyone who claims to be a prophet is actually a profit (seeker that is).

(“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits.” Matt 7:15-20)

I don’t care about golf. I don’t care about the Masters. But I would laugh my ass off at the look on Trumps face when he heard that they’d either cancelled or moved it because of the Jim Crow law. That would be the only way golf could ever give me a moment of good because all golf really is, is a way to ruin a good walk.

I’ll say it, I used to play golf. I sorta enjoyed it. It is a game that is frustrating as hell, but by the time I finished, I could almost make par on 9 holes. But golf is all about being a Good Ol’ Boy’s club; Augusta National is infamous for its role in demonstrating that over the last two decades. Golf isn’t going to move The Masters; if anything, they’ll announce that because of the new voting laws, they’re going to add a second tournament to Augusta in the fall.

That’s because love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not the sole province of Christianity. They do not own those traits.

No, they don’t, which is why many non-Christians are more Christian than many Christians. And I frequently say that these right-wing fucknuts will be very surprised when they stand before St. Peter’s Gates and they see some of the people who they would never believe could have entered heaven because they didn’t believe in White American Jesus.

Of course they don’t. But that doesn’t make them the real teachings of the one we call Christ. Orthopraxy means right actions; right living. That respects those teachings far more than right belief - orthodoxy. We are told a small number of things to do and that is all we should really concentrate on. ” For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?”

Augusta National, where the Masters is held, was racist as fuck even after Tiger Woods totally dominated the field and won green jacket after green jacket.

They are old boy network white supremacist adjacent for decades. That institutionalized racism and bigotry doesn’t disappear. They’re fine with supporting the state’s voter suppression efforts. What gets them changing their tune? Losing sponsorship money and TV deal money if the networks don’t cover it.

My wife and I started playing golf together about six years ago…haven’t played in about two years because we’ve had other priorities, but now that we’re both vaxxed, I think I can talk her into going to the driving range and then maybe hit our little 9 hole course we like.

It’s a good way to spend a part of a Saturday morning. Plus, bloody Marys after 90 minutes walking.

If you are tired of golf, or never cared for it, look into disc golf, aka Frisbee golf. Inexpensive, all ages, environmentally friendly, all seasons and weather. And more fun. In the last year of Covid the users have exploded by two or three times.

In 10 years there will be more Disc Golf courses in United States then there are Ball Golf courses. Already there are 8,000 US disc golf courses compared to ball golf at 14,000. Disc golf is adding 300 courses a year. Ball golf is adding nothing.

KSID radio in Sidney, Nebr.

SIDNEY - The deaths of two Western Nebraska Community College students at the Sidney Municipal Airport last week appeared to be an accident, according to Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub.

Schaub says Yemin An, 21, of South Korea, and Zhaoxin Chen, 24, of China, were fatally injured when they were working on an airplane engine inside the school’s Aviation Maintenance Facility at Lloyd Carr Field south of Sidney on Thursday, April 1. Both were sophomores in the school’s Aviation Maintenance Technician program.

The families of An and Chen were notified through the assistance of the South Korean and Chinese Embassies.

Autopsies were completed on Monday morning.

The article goes on to say that other students who gave statements to the Sidney Police or Cheyenne County Sheriff were terribly shaken by the incident, though the police have not released what happened at the airport.

Alas it looks like the Court of Appeals judge being bought by the GQP will win but that’s expected up here in gerrymander land.

The only real hope for Wisconsin is that we can make the redistricting from the current census work for us rather than against us.

Republican congressional candidate Sery Kim has filed a $10 million dollar defamation suit against the Texas Tribune because the publication described her recent racist comments as racist. Kim is one of 11 Texas Republicans running in a special election to replace the late Rep. Ron Wright, who died of COVID-19 in February. The Tribune article reported that Kim had lost two of her biggest supporters after saying “she does not want Chinese immigrants in the United States.” She doesn’t deny making these remarks, which are racist. She just chafes at the Tribune correctly labeling them as such.

As others have previously pointed out, the 7% rise may not have any effect on the taxes paid by multi-billion dollar corporations that pay no taxes. In general, taxes = Sum over all brackets [tax rate x taxable income]. These companies apparently have managed to have 0 taxable income after adjusting for all their deductions and credits. So there have to be other changes to the tax code to get money out of these corporations. I am not an accountant — so perhaps someone here can explain the circumstances under which a higher tax rate would force them to pay taxes.

This is correct. So much so that I view the only tax reforms worth considering are the ones that redefine what’s taxable. Just focusing on rates is a mistake if paying tax at all is basically voluntary for big corporations.

Would I sound paranoid if I wondered whether somebody pushed them and somebody else turned on the engine and… “we were just trying to scare them, just a prank, we didn’t know it would…”

I doubt it. Starting an aircraft engine is a little involved and there is some slight warning before it starts turning fast enough to hurt someone.
One careless person can walk into a running engine, either on a plane or a test stand. Since there were two victims, I think it is much more likely that an engine on a test stand broke loose and swung or jumped into the two victims. For light planes, the test stand is a cart and is held down with chains, usually two of them.

re: #83 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

Try disc golf. 8,000+ courses in the US, fun, cheap, egalitarian. Based on sales records, our sport grew by almost 3 times in the last year. We also have our first $10 million athlete.
