To really be considered a hypocrite, you need to be seen as actually believing the things you say/do.

And I don’t think any rational person could argue that Mitch McConnell believes in anything other than whatever he says on a given day is “right.”

Consider also that the J&J issues with the Emergent Biosolutions facility is due to Trump steering business to that company despite known issues with quality control.

Biden inherited that mess, and that aforementioned article tries to magic balance fairy that Biden admin knew there were problems before EB ruined 15 million doses.

Biden inherited a bunch of bad decisions by Trump, and trying to fix everything immediately is impossible. We’re paying the consequences of his know nothing approach.

Trump also seemed to think that preventing other countries from getting vaccinations from the US somehow helps the US in the long term. That’s grossly short-sighted as new variants mutate into existence from replication. We’re seeing that with Brazil where new variants are occurring almost daily now due to unchecked spread. Stop the spread, you reduce the variants that could prove even deadlier or more easily transmissible than the current ones in circulation.

Right now, it looks like the variant that became dominant in UK is also the leading variant here in the US (gee, how’d that travel ban work?).

China’s digital yuan cryptocurrency is expected to give its government a vast economic and social monitoring tool, and strip users of their anonymity. Beijing is preparing the digital currency for international use, and designing it to be unconnected to the global financial system, to permit more centralized control. The cryptocurrency is accessible from the owner’s cellphone or on a card, and it may be spent without an online connection. Analysts and economists say the digital yuan could gain a foothold on the fringes of the international financial system, allowing people in impoverished nations to transfer money internationally. With a trackable digital currency, China’s government could impose and collect fines as soon as an infraction is detected, or enable parties sanctioned by the U.S. to exchange money outside of sanctions.

One of the many reasons I don’t like that NYT article, here is a sentence from that:

What part muons play in the overall pattern of creation is still a puzzle.

The burden of working within a superstitious population is that trying to describe reality gets bogged down in religious terminology.

Another bad bit from the article:

Muons are an unlikely particle to hold center stage in physics.

Who is to say what is “center stage”? And historically, the muon played an interesting role in demonstrating the reality of special relativity. Muons are created in the upper atmosphere (from very high energy collisions) and can be detected then on the ground. But they should have decayed before hitting the ground. Yet since these muons are moving so close to the speed of light, in their reference frame they reach the earth’s surface much sooner than their half-life. See:

Tonight on HBO:

Exterminate All The Brutes
hbo.com

Exterminate All the Brutes, from acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro, HBO’s Sometimes in April), is a four-part hybrid docuseries that provides a visually arresting journey through time, into the darkest hours of humanity. Through his personal voyage, Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history, digging deep into the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism — from America to Africa and its impact on society today.

Based on works by three authors and scholars — Sven Lindqvist’s Exterminate All the Brutes, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, and Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s Silencing the Past — Exterminate All the Brutes revisits and reframes the profound meaning of the Native American genocide and American slavery and their fundamental implications for our present.

Another pet peeve of mine, and even science videos like the one I posted do this: show particles like muons or electrons as rotating balls.

They are not rotating balls.

The only reason a video like that one uses rotating balls is because explaining what is happening takes a lot of words.

Just don’t believe things like muons and electrons and such are rotating balls.

They are not rotating balls.

They do have angular momentum (actually , “spin”, but it can be expressed in units of angular momentum).

But not because they are rotating balls.

Because muons (and similar particles) have a charge and have spin, they can precess when put in a magnetic field.

This experiment determined that precession is not what is should have been by some tiny tiny margin.

In that video the talking head speaks while showing an image of a top rotating. But that top is also precessing. It’s that precession which matters.

It’s one of those things in modern physics that is non-intuitive but important: muons (and elections and such) have spin, but they are not balls which are rotating.

UPDATE:

Forget the 15 million doses already thrown out. The true scope of EB’s disastrous rollout of vaccine manufacturing may total more than 62 million doses ruined due to lax scrutiny and oversight and glitches in their protocols.

FDA hasn’t cleared those 62 million doses for release over ongoing concerns about contamination.

Officials at EB pretty much said that they can do fixes to their systems or make drugs, but they can’t do both.

Other issues found during audits of the facility included mold contamination, improper cleaning of equipment, insufficient training of employees and raw materials not being tested, according to the Times.

“Do you want me to make drugs or fix issues? I don’t have time to do both,” a senior manufacturing supervisor would say when quality concerns arose, according to The New York Times.

Guess fucking what - you should not be doing both if you’re more than willing to let safety lapses occur.

Nate Cohn finally figures it out

“Beyond any provisions on voting itself, the new Georgia election law risks making election subversion easier. It creates new avenues for partisan interference in election administration. This includes allowing the state elections board, now newly controlled by appointees of the Republican State Legislature, to appoint a single person to take control of typically bipartisan county election boards, which have important power over vote counting and voter eligibility.”

“All of this represents an obvious threat to American democracy. And yet the risk of election subversion has been overshadowed by the fight over new restrictions on voting, especially by mail.”

So much so. I had the best day ever in a thunderstorm at an outdoor show on about 30 hits of acid. We’d thought it was weak, so took more, when it was just unusually slow to hit. The drums echoing around Soldier Field were magnificent.

Belafon  Apr 7, 2021 • 2:35:26pm
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has had quite a week. On Monday, McConnell threatened American businesses with “serious consequences” if they spoke out against the rash of GOP voter suppression laws sweeping the nation. On Tuesday, he doubled down, saying, “My warning to corporate America is to stay out of politics.” McConnell quickly added that he wasn’t “talking about political contributions,” because of course not. Effectively—‘shut your traps and donate, or else the GOP will quit doing your bidding.’

Perhaps being extorted isn’t sitting so well with the GOP’s corporate donor base. On Wednesday, McConnell tried to put a more genteel spin on his threat.

“I didn’t say that very artfully yesterday,” McConnell told Kentucky reporters, referring to his explicit threat. “They certainly are entitled to be involved in politics. They are,” he conceded, referring to the corporations that have spoken out against Georgia’s voter suppression law. “My principal complaint is they didn’t read the darn bill,” he said of corporate CEOs.

Gosh, golly gee, what a relief. For a second, it seemed as though McConnell had declared both the free enterprise and free speech of the corporate sector dead all in one breath. American businesses had to either toe the GOP line or suffer the consequences. It was quite a reversal for McConnell and Republicans, who have spent decades prioritizing the rights of corporations over the rights of everyday Americans, even when lives were on the line. But with corporate profits no longer aligning with Republicans’ ongoing culture war, McConnell was drawing a line in the sand.

Let’s be clear: the damage has been done. McConnell may be trying to soften the blow and give himself an out, but that threat was heard loud and clear in board rooms across the nation. And this is by no means the end of the story. The GOP’s grievance politics will continue to be at odds with a culture that is rapidly outstripping Republicans and the increasing number of corporations trying to market to that culture.

My grandfather, an old Missouri farmer, used to refer to certain set in their ways Missouri farmers as “Ol Mossback farmers” usually with the additional comment “sitting on their front porch with their casket. Waiting for the end of times.”

This is obviously where the phrase came from.

His ‘End of Times’ reference was about the End of Times panic waves that ran through the United States in the mid to late 1800’s. We inherited a bunch from those waves. Including Jehovah’s Witnesses and Louis Armstrong’s ‘When the Saints come Marching In’).

Cultural memories can be fascinating. I wonder what we will end up from the Trump era.

This is excellent. The area mentioned has a lot of poultry raising and processing facilities. And employs a lot of non-citizen farm and factory workers. Another portion, although maybe not this year, are 18-25 year olds brought in from overseas (usually Eastern European and FSU countries) for seasonal work in the tourist industry. (They don’t get much money, but get a chance to live in the US and party for minimum wage.)

Additionally, a lot of the population is seasonal vacationers visiting the Atlantic Coast Beaches. Getting a bunch of the locals vaccinated before the tourists hit, and then perhaps encouraging the tourists to vaccinate when they visit in the summer, is a great move!

Finally, the area is badly under-served medically.

Or at the very least, a solid focus by Fox News and other Republican-aligned media outlets on how terrible she was, even if they avoided saying anything explicitly bigoted?”

“Yet Republicans seem far more interested in demonizing Coca-Cola and Major League Baseball these days than they are in bashing the vice president. They didn’t even bother to make the case that she was under-qualified during the campaign, even though she was only in her fourth year in the Senate. Surely that would’ve been an easy line of attack. Another pet peeve of mine, and even science videos like the one I posted do this: show particles like muons or electrons as rotating balls.

They are not rotating balls.

The only reason a video like that one uses rotating balls is because explaining what is happening takes a lot of words.

Actually, words are almost entirely useless. Particles like electrons and muons are taken to be point particles in the standard model, and trying to describe in words how a point particle can have intrinsic angular momentum (as if it were a ball rotating about its axis) basically can’t be done.

We can’t think that way. With the GQP becoming increasingly dependent on low propensity non college educated voters as high propensity college educated voters shift to the Democrats, these new state voter suppression laws may be self defeating. We must fight to win the midterms.
