i know cars arent the best example
nevertheless

lets forget licensing, registration and law enforcement of the rules.

i can voluntarily take advanced driver training, learn evasive manouvers, anticipate situations etc. this might reduce my car ownership and driving insurance rates.

when i drive a car or sit as a passenger there is a sort of agreement and i accept the risks that certain things could happen. out of my control.

someone else could accidentally, negligently, or even on purpose damage my vehicle, or injure or kill me.

even if i did nothing wrong, everything right, including using my advanced training.

even as a pedestrian not driving at the time, I or my estate can also sue if im hit. and there could be criminal penalties as well.

there is no equivalent societal agreement.

someone else owns a gun. fine.
that should not put me at risk of being deliberately shot, let alone accidentally.
not in my own home, not through walls, at school, work, or anywhere else.

i should not have to get my own gun to protect myself against any joker i come in contact with in tennessee who now may have a gun.

i should not have to take advanced training to protect myself so he can ‘exercise’ his 2A rights.
because nothing i do will protect me against his carelessness or recklessness, let alone some crazy’s deliberate attempt to randomly kill me.

there should be zero risk to me with you exercising your 2A rights.
i should not need a gun to be in my own home.
i should not need a gun to venture out in public.

and i shouldnt have to do anything to protect myself from you mishandling your 2A rights.

Kansas Senate Majority Leader Gene Suellentrop (R) “reeked of alcohol, struggled to speak or walk, and threatened the Kansas Highway Patrol officer who stopped him in the early hours of March 16 for driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 in Topeka,” the Kansas Reflector reports.

When the officer approached the car, Suellentrop called him “donut boy” and complained this was “all for going the wrong way.”

I think that’s licensed individuals, not physical shops, so it’s not a fair comparison, but the number of gun dealers alone is pretty bad.

Too many of us like to give themselves the power to kill someone if they lose their temper for a moment, with no thought as to whether that’s the responsible thing to do.

Don’t even need to go there. Everything they’re proposing would have been acceptable as part of the original militia acts that, for one thing, required militia members to own a military class musket that was little good for anything but warfare of the type practiced then. Membership was : “free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia,” the “excepted” being the big sticking point in those days and what most fights about the militia were about. Essentially everyone wanted to get out of having to do drill.

Essentially we have the same problem - everyone wants their toy without having to have the responsibility - “Drill” - for it.

I did my dissertation on the Shakers and have a whole chapter on the Shakers wanting an exemption from militia duty because they were pacifists. Most states granted them an exception based on their beliefs, but New York held out. In the ensuing war of petitions, the Shakers framed their argument around the notion that citizenship is defined by a set of rights and duties. They argued that they fulfilled other duties of citizenship (road maintenance, taxes) but wanted out of this one.

I am not a martial artist but I have learned a few related skills over the years. At the time of the Michael Brown shooting in 2014, I was not shy about saying that I thought it was open and shut murder, with no conceivable justification for shooting the kid from 30 feet away. A wingnut I know demanded to know, “What would you do if a 300 pound thug charged at YOU like that?”
As I explained, that very thing did happen to me while I was a deputy sheriff. It never crossed my mind to draw my Colt Python and shoot the miscreant. Instead, I stopped him with a snap-kick to the crotch. It connected perfectly. I went down too from his momentum but I got right back up, while he writhed in agony on the ground. The suspect thought he had died and gone to hell for some minutes, but he made a full recovery in plenty of time to stand trial.

There’s nothing white about Christianity. Jesus was a Jew. So were all of the original apostles; the apostle Paul was a late addition, and a very controversial one, at that. Jesus’s teachings were very explicit that all people are to be treated equally, no matter who they are, what they’ve done, or what they look like. Why do Conservatives keep failing at comedy?

It isn’t because they keep punching down.

It isn’t because to become a successful comedian from the ground up typically involves spending time in a big city (because how else can you get a large enough crowd to cover your costs?) and that in turn means you need to have material that big city people find amusing, and tendency towards being liberal trends hand in hand with population density.

It isn’t because comedy is about empathy…

Or at least it isn’t just because of those things…

It is because comedy at its purest form as it first emerged in human beings, is a way to send the message “nothing dangerous is going on right now, you can relax.”

This message is antithetical to the Republican Rage Industrial Complex, whose victims/viewers must be kept primed with anger 24/7. Republicans can’t allow their base to relax… and that is one of the deepest reasons why conservative comedy doesn’t work.

Earlier this week, Bakker interviewed right-wing conspiracy theorist Steve Quayle, who spent two programs warning about aliens, demons, trans-dimensional beings, and “diseases that are designed to initiate cannibalism in human beings” and turn them into literal zombies. On the heels of those programs, Bakker interviewed End Times conspiracy theorist Tom Horn, who warned that an asteroid will strike the Earth in 2029, unleashing an alien virus that will give rise to the Antichrist.

On Thursday’s program, Horn discussed his recent book, “The Wormwood Prophecy,” which claims that the government is covering up the fact that an asteroid known as Apophis will strike the Earth in 2029. While scientists say that Apophis will simply pass by our planet in 2029, Horn insists that it will actually strike the Earth and fulfill the prophecy in Revelation 8: “The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.”

“I believe Apophis is the asteroid that is talked about in the book of Revelation, chapter eight,” Horn said. “It is what is called ‘Wormwood’ in the Bible.”

The Virginia GOP abolished holding a primary in favour of holding a nominating convention.

Because these are conservatives, they are all stabbing each other in the back and accusing each other of corruption.

As a nomination method, conventions are easier to manipulate than primaries because local party leaders control the application process, decide who is eligible to vote and pick the convention location.

“The whole thing about a convention is to disenfranchise as many people as possible and tilt it toward the candidate of choice for that committee,” said former congressman Denver Riggleman (R-Va.), who lost a June convention held in Lynchburg, his rival’s home, in a congressional district larger than New Jersey. The bulk of Riggleman’s supporters lived far north of there.

When I was in Iceland, I had the chance to taste their famous fermented shark meat. It made me appreciate just how close they must have been to famine in winter, that they would put a piece of that stuff in their mouths more than once.

In the category of “Accused Republican criminals don’t resign, they double down”:

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota—South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg, who is facing criminal charges after running over and killing a man last year, is celebrating a pending promotion in the U.S. Army Reserves—which the family of his victim called a “slap in the face.”

Ravnsborg has refused to step away from his role as the top law enforcement officer in the state in the seven months since he slammed into Joe Boever on a highway, allegedly while reading political news on his cellphone during a drive home from a GOP party.

And on Thursday, Ravnsborg revealed that the accident apparently hasn’t hurt his military career either since he has been recommended for promotion from lieutenant colonel to colonel.

“Today—I was notified that I made the promotion list to full COLONEL in the Army Reserves,” he said in a Facebook post that included the full-bird symbol for a colonel.

An attempt at impeachment failed, as too many Republicans are allies of Ravnsborg.

Sea bugs used to be cheap garbage for poor people. Somewhere along the line rich people figured out it apparently tastes good, and all of a sudden it was a delicacy and the price skyrocketed.

I’m sure a lot of “how did people start eating…” started off as poor people trying anything to not starve.

Eh, yes and no. Basically the desirability of lobster has largely depended upon access to fresh lobster, since it has to be cooked within 2 days of capture to remain edible. What that meant is it was pricey if you lived away from the coast for most of human history, while those who lived on the coast saw it as either a staple of their daily diet or as peasant food because it was so abundant that anybody could go down to the ocean and get their own.

It’s only been in the last couple centuries that the inventions of refrigeration and vacuum-sealing have made it possible to transport fresh fish and shellfish from the coastlines of the world to inner regions fast enough to preserve the flavor and edibility.

The allegations

In 1988, authorities looked into allegations that prominent citizens of Nebraska, as well as high-level U.S. politicians, were involved in a child prostitution ring. Alleged abuse victims were interviewed, who claimed that children in foster care were flown to the East Coast of the United States to be sexually abused at “bad parties”. The claims primarily centered on Lawrence E. King Jr., who ran the now defunct Franklin Community Federal Credit Union in Omaha, Nebraska, and alleged that the ring was “a cult of devil worshipers involved in the mutilation, sacrifice and cannibalism of numerous children”. Numerous conspiracy theories evolved, claiming that the alleged abuse was part of a widespread series of crimes including devil worship, cannibalism, drug trafficking, and CIA arms dealing.

COBOL supports multidimensional arrays, but has no built-in matrix functions, so you’d have to roll your own matrix functions. IBM’s COBOL natively supports XML and JSON message creation and parsing.

So, in some breaking news out of Czech Republic, looks like the longstanding rumors that PM Andrej Babiš was an agent of the notorious Czechoslovak Communist-era secret police, the StB (státní bezpečnost, “state security”) are indeed true. They found his identity card in Slovakia, in the old StB archives. A lot of those records were destroyed during the collapse of communism, but not all of them.

And worse yet…he was a volunteer. He willingly and knowingly signed up to be an agent, an informant. What that means going forward isn’t clear - the story broke just a few hours ago here.

Babiš has long denied it, but now, it seems like there’s irrefutable proof.

Police in Sri Lanka on Thursday arrested the reigning Mrs. World for pulling the crown off the head of the winner of a Mrs. Sri Lanka beauty pageant and allegedly causing injuries. She was later released on bail.

Caroline Jurie, who won the Mrs. World 2020 competition, was accused of hurting Pushpika De Silva, who won the Mrs. Sri Lanka title at a televised pageant held in Colombo on Sunday.

Moments after De Silva won the title, Jurie, who is also Sri Lankan, came on stage and snatched the crown from her, saying she was ineligible because she was divorced. Jurie then gave the crown to the first-runner up, declaring she was the winner.

In a statement on her Facebook page, De Silva denied being divorced.

So, in some breaking news out of Czech Republic, looks like the longstanding rumors that PM Andrej Babiš was an agent of the notorious Czechoslovak Communist-era secret police, the StB (státní bezpečnost, “state security”) are indeed true. They found his identity card in Slovakia, in the old StB archives. A lot of those records were destroyed during the collapse of communism, but not all of them.

And worse yet…he was a volunteer. He willingly and knowingly signed up to be an agent, an informant. What that means going forward isn’t clear - the story broke just a few hours ago here.

Babiš has long denied it, but now, it seems like there’s irrefutable proof.

We’re still dealing with increases in cases of covid19 in these parts due to wider spread of two variants - B.1.1.7 and B.1.526 - both of which are more virulent than the original covid19 strain that did so much damage this time last year. The former was first identified in the UK (hey, how’d that get here?!) and the latter was identified first in NYC (USA! USA!)

And yet, people want to reopen schools faster and loosen restrictions, even in this area. That is stupendously counterproductive, since kids and people under 55 are the largest pool of cases at the moment, and they’re also the ones unable to get vaccinated until April 19 at the earliest unless you have health conditions.

It’s a particularly risky time here because you’ve got pandemic fatigue, wishful thinking that the vaccine is the sole solution, and we don’t have to worry about new cases or deaths because those are “manageable”.

It’s a race to get more people vaccinated than the new variants can spread and infect more people.

Not sure how that’s supposed to work, but he’s got his panties all in a twist about it. I can’t wait for Sunday when I’ll get to argue with him about how responsible gun owners should be pushing for more regulation, and if they’re not, then they’re not responsible and are part of the problem.

I have to wait until at least April 19 because I’m in good health, don’t have one of those essential jobs (I can WFH - permanently), and I’m okay waiting my turn as people who need it get it first.

That said, I can’t wait to get it, because that’s ultimately the best defense to stop the pandemic and get the economy moving again. I just worry about schools reopening too fast because of the fatigue people have with home schooling and the problems with remote learning. Had everyone followed protocols closely, we wouldn’t be in this mess, but enough people in enough places made that impossible, so we’re just trying to minimize further damage.

Minnesota is fully open to eligibility, so many of my friends and co-workers are now getting vaccinated. I had a co-worker who had his appointment yesterday over lunch. I like Sen. Gillibrand, but her take misses the point.

The GOP had years of control in DC and did nothing about any infrastructure. They punted. They delayed.

Mostly, they pushed the burdens to states and localities and out of the federal government’s hands all while insisting that the only path forward was tax cuts for the millionaire class.

Well, that bill too has come due. The GOP are obstructionist treasonweasels and they are going to block action on infrastructure no matter how many concessions Democrats provide. The GOP aren’t coming in to this as honest or rational partners willing to accept a compromise infrastructure plan. They’re out to block it. McConnell openly stated as much. Other GOPers too.

Since they’ve made their position clear, there’s no reason for Democrats not to go all out to get every priority on infrastructure included in these bills.

What’s the GOP going to do when Democrats pass this (and it’s popular among a majority of all Americans across party lines)?

They’re going to try and take credit for it, just as some of the treasonweasels who voted against the Biden relief plan are trying to take credit for the relief checks and funding for localities that the GOP specifically opposed.

The main thing I’m nervous about is the ridiculous drive from here to the far side of downtown Minneapolis. I absolutely hate that drive, and the anxiety of finding a parking space in the garage and finding my way to the right area in the massive hall (though there’ll probably be a stream of people headed in the right direction, at least). I can’t wait to get the shot itself, but I know I can’t let my guard down until our level-headed and science-minded governor fully relaxes the restrictions and tells us the science says it’s safe. He’s been doing a good job taking care of us so far, and I’m not about to doubt him yet.

Technically, as an employee of an essential business, I could have gotten the vaccine earlier; however, I was only officially made an employee last week (after eligibility already opened). I suspect that once my paperwork went through and the state picked up the change in status, they bumped me up in the line. Difficult to say, but it’s a moot point now. The company did send out a survey that indicated that they may be providing on-site vaccinations for their employees, which would be a little bit surprising and a whole lot cool.

Back in the late 40s Conservatives endlessly published alleged union abuses which led to the Taft-Hartley Act which enabled Right To Work For Less. They sensationalized the attack on columnist Victor Riesel who was blinded in an acid attack by alleged union members. That led to the McClellan hearings in the late 50s that looked at labor corruption which Robert Kennedy was involved in.

Also add the hard core anti-communist stances of George Meany which backfired the multiple “Operation Dixie” unionizing efforts in the South which all failed.

I watched an episode of Chopped last night where they used chicken feet as part of an Asian-themed episode. Apparently, they are a tough component in a dish when run in a limited-time tournament format like that; the traditional method of serving them involves cooking them until the talons are soft and will not scratch someone when they are eaten. Otherwise, the talons must be removed from the feet. One of the chefs (a white guy, natch) served them with the talons, defending himself that it was traditional to serve them that way, and was corrected by a Chinese judge that this is only when they can be cooked sufficiently.

This comes from the NYT. The article states we have over 50 000 open vaccination appointments in this state because no one wants them. Sigh.

I saw Gussie Busch driving a six-horse team of imported English driving horses, pulling a replica of one of Queen Elizabeth’s carriages in a horse show in St Louis once. He was in his 80s then, and these were Big Strong horses. The show ring also served as an ice hockey rink in the winter, so you know the size. The exit gate was maybe 16 feet wide, and set to the side of one end. As the demo was over, he brought them up into a real spanking trot and did a couple of figure eights and then aimed at the gate at full tilt. No one in the arena could breathe. All the special guests riding in the carriage were probably not breathing, either! He hit the opening perfectly and went out at full speed. The man may have been an autocrat, but he could sure handle the reins!

I remember being charmed beyond belief the first time I came to NY and wondered why so many buildings had doors four feet off the ground on the side entrance, and somebody explained there used to be platforms at that height, because that was where the carriage trade got into the store. Also, of course, that’s when I learned why the carriage trade was called that.

I don’t care. The fact that they’re even having the conversation is going to have a ripple effect on the people who shout BUTBUTBUT SEPARATION OF POWERS!!!! There will be arguments. Many of them. And loud.

Kinda have a mixed reaction to this “court reform” commission: yes, it’s certainly worthwhile to have a Presidential Commission open up the issue; and yeah, there are a lot of “reforms” that the Judiciary (in general) could stand to have implemented, but OTOH, that “Separation Of Powers” thing isn’t just rhetoric: there is a huge, nation-wide, disgracefully-well-financed movement which has spent many years insinuating “originalist” (i.e. extremist partisan right-wing ideologues) jurists into virtually every level of state and Federal courts: they are not likely to give up even the least bit of ground without extreme political combat.
