re: #438 Jay C

Kinda have a mixed reaction to this “court reform” commission: yes, it’s certainly worthwhile to have a Presidential Commission open up the issue; and yeah, there are a lot of “reforms” that the Judiciary (in general) could stand to have implemented, but OTOH, that “Separation Of Powers” thing isn’t just rhetoric: there is a huge, nation-wide, disgracefully-well-financed movement which has spent many years insinuating “originalist” (i.e. extremist partisan right-wing ideologues) jurists into virtually every level of state and Federal courts: they are not likely to give up even the least bit of ground without extreme political combat.

The structure if the courts is entirely up to the other two branches, other than there must be a Supreme Court.

I mentioned this downstairs, but I have a wingnut friend of mine who genuinely believed I’d get shot going into downtown Minneapolis today because of violent protests. I guess I should’ve mentioned that the people doing the violence were the ones that wanted George Floyd to be murdered and are now hoping his killers go free.

The structure if the courts is entirely up to the other two branches, other than there must be a Supreme Court.

Which is the core of the problem, IMO: any significant “reform” (of which even the mildest of proposals, of course, are likely to be vigorously opposed and hysterically spun as “ZOMG!! ILLEGAL LIBRUL COURT-PACKING!!11!!1! by the Usual Lobbies), has to have the support - or at least, minimal opposition- of the Executive Branch, AND pass both Houses of Congress to become enacted.
And that’s a dubious proposition, IMHO.
And I’d love to be proved wrong.

Yes, changes to the courts requires the other two branches. The study itself just to give some empirical data to what would otherwise be considered a completely biased assessment. It will take Congress to approve the changes.

I guess that it’s official now:

DMX, chart-topping rapper with gruff voice and hardscrabble life, dies at 50

DMX, the gruff-voiced, chart-topping rapper who electrified listeners with songs such as “Party Up (Up in Here)” and “X Gon’ Give It to Ya,” drawing inspiration from his hardscrabble life while also emerging as a star of action films and crime thrillers, died April 9 at a hospital in White Plains, N.Y. He was 50.

His family announced the death in a statement. His lawyer, Murray Richman, told The Washington Post on Sunday that DMX had been hospitalized after a heart attack. He said he had no knowledge that DMX had suffered a drug overdose, as reported by TMZ.

As I’ve said before it is not the white race we want to replace. After all, I am white and I don’t plan to check out any time soon (though cancer may have other plans). It is, rather, the dumbest third of the white race we would like to see replaced. This is because, let’s face it, if you’re white and you’re still dumber than a box of rocks after a thousand years of privilege, dominance, and conquest, it is probably time to give someone else, anyone else, a chance.

AP: Anti-Government Bundy arrested twice in two hours at Idaho Statehouse

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Anti-government activist Ammon Bundy was arrested twice in two hours Thursday on suspicion of trespassing at the Idaho Statehouse. Police said he returned to the Capitol building shortly after bailing out of jail on the first arrest.

It wasn’t immediately known why Bundy was at the Statehouse.

It marked the fourth and fifth times the man known for leading a 2016 armed standoff at an Oregon wildlife refuge has been arrested in Boise since August, with all but one occurring at the Statehouse.

Bundy has been banned from the government building since August after he and dozens of others — many of them members of his People’s Rights organization — staged a series of protests at the Statehouse over coronavirus-related measures

He should be charged as a habitual offender.

Snatched an appointment for a J&J vaccination locally.

So I have two appointments next week, one for J&J, one for Moderna. Trying to figure out which one to cancel. The J&J location is more convenient for me so I’ll likely cancel the Moderna one.

There appears to be a lot of Moderna vaccine available in San Diego county.

But of course the question comes up - which vaccine is better?

I guess for 2-dose system the Pfizer is superior, and the J&J is the only single dose vaccine available now.

J&J ended up being tested on newer variants compared to the others, so the comparisons aren’t quite 1-to-1. They all keep people out of the hospital.

J&J ended up being tested on newer variants compared to the others, so the comparisons aren’t quite 1-to-1. They all keep people out of the hospital.

That’s what I am finding by looking at the high-hit google links.

Still, I guess my general concern is that as the virus population grows and new variants emerge, we’ll have to go back for “boosters”.

One thing that is a strike against Moderna is the large volume of the injection. I guess some people get a lot of soreness from that.

In the end, I think I’ll simply settle on convenience.

re: #88 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Yeah, the one-and-done bit about J&J is attractive.

My wife and I got moderna, my oldest (25) and youngest(16) have received pfizer (youngest has gotten 1/2) and my middle got J&J. Sore arms and a 12 hour headache with the J&J are all the symptoms we’ve had, though friends have gotten a bit more with moderna and J&J.

I think the moderna ones is superior. If I had a choice that’s the one I would choose.

which vaccine is better? The one you can get. When you can get multiple, pick one.

J&J ended up being tested on newer variants compared to the others, so the comparisons aren’t quite 1-to-1. They all keep people out of the hospital.

I got the J&J, and lost 40 pounds, gained three inches in height, my manhood doubled in size and now people keep confusing me for a young George Clooney.

Get the Moderna.

re: #74 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I had a dental appointment Wednesday. Their office is a father-son team. I ended up with the father (probably late 60’s) this time. He was saying that they both got the Moderna. He had no second dose issues, but said that his son was sick in bed with flu-like conditions for three days.

Of course, I had to mention that age and experience beat youth and energy. And more seriously noted that a lot of older folks did not get badly affected by the 1918 Pandemic. The current theory is that there had been a series flu outbreak back in the 1890’s which may have conferred some immunity to those who had it. Also, a lot of the deaths from the 1918 pandemic were apparently due to the victims’ highly reactive immune response.

I had the Pfizer vaccine. About 36 hours after the second shot I felt tired for a couple of days. _Not_ bone-tired coming down with a bad illness; Just tired. I also had muscle soreness in the injection site for about 3 days.

I told the nurse doing the second injection that I had not felt either the first or second injection. She said that the vaccinations were with a smaller needle than typically used.

I agree that the most important thing is to just get vaccinated. Having to choose which vaccine is a problem of riches. In the end, as was noted, all three provide significant effectiveness in preventing hospitalization and death.

If one and done, and easily accessible vaccination site ensure being able to get vaccinated, the medical authorities I have heard recommend going that route.

I understand that the effectiveness numbers associated with each vaccine are from slightly different tests and measurements.

My nephew was in a J&J clinical trial this year to determine whether 2 shots would improve effectiveness; it wasn’t until this week that they brought in those in the trial and disclosed he was in the placebo group. They immediately gave him the vaccine; he was exhausted for the next day and a half but otherwise no problems.

The most surreal I’ve seen so far has been a BBC radio dance channel switching from “Dance Anthems” to National Anthem.

But there was also a BBC Northern Ireland channel covering a debate in the devolved parliament in which a member from the SDLP was talking about death in the COVID era, and how people can’t even be with their dying family, never mind mourn them in a funeral, and then it suddenly crash-cuts to the face of Phillip and the National Anthem.

Of course, some people have been dubbing other tunes on top of the National Anthem…

All the European royalty are cousins of some sort. Liz and Phil are 2nd cousins, I think. Or maybe 3rd.

That’s why it was so important that Elizabeth’s children and grandchildren married people who absolutely positively no relation at all.

There has a been a trend in the most recent generations of royals across Europe of marrying commoners (for lack of a better term).

Felipe VI (who’s mother, Sophia, was born a princess of Greece and Denmark) married a commoner. As has Fredrik, Crown Prince of Denmark. Wilem-Alexander of the Netherlands married a woman from Argentina. Harold V of Norway probably started the trend marrying a commoner back in the 1960s.

Of course, all of those royal houses are still related somehow.

Iirc, Victoria is about 14th in line to the BRITISH throne, thanks to the intricacies of dynastic relationships. Her younger brother, Carl Philip, is actually ahead of her in the British line, since the UK still adheres to male primogeniture, while Sweden has switched to absolute primogeniture. Carl Philip is 4th in line to the Swedish throne, behind Victoria and her children.

Actually, male primogeniture has been eliminated, but only for people born since 2011 (the year of the Act). So Princess Charlotte is ahead of her younger brother, but Princes Andrew and Edward and their descendants are still ahead of Princess Anne.

ETA: Also, Princess Anne’s youngest grandchild is #22 in succession — and will be #23 once Harry and Megan’s daughter is born. Then they start down the list of George VI’s siblings…

I believe Queen Victoria used to refer to Tsar Nicolas as “Dear Poopsie” in letters because he was her grandson, and so she’d probably cleaned one or two of his nappies on occasion, and what is a grandson going to do? “Grandmother, could you please stop using the scatological term of endearment in letters? white replacement theory:

Appearing with his friend Mark Steyn, who was filling in at 7 p.m. ET, Carlson invoked “white replacement theory,” a racist conspiracy theory that imagines White people are being intentionally replaced by immigrants.
“No, no, no,” Carlson said, insisting that he wasn’t parroting the theory.
But then he said “this is a voting rights question. I have less political power because they’re importing a brand new electorate. Why should I sit back and take that? The power that I have as an American guaranteed at birth is one man, one vote, and they’re diluting it. No, they are not allowed to do that. Why are we putting up with this?”
His remarks came in the context of a conversation about how the government treats migrants who cross the southern border — one of the most frequent topics on Fox.
Moments earlier, Carlson seemed to predict that he would spark outrage: “Now,” he said, “I know that the left and all the little gatekeepers on Twitter become literally hysterical if you use the term ‘replacement,’ if you suggest that the Democratic Party is trying to replace the current electorate, the voters now casting ballots, with new people, more obedient voters from the Third World. But they become hysterical because that’s what’s happening actually. Let’s just say it: That’s true.”
