Lyrics
sink into the ground wide and steady while the burning
flickers to a glow out the temple of your ear
while the levy of our predicament’s unyielding -
love come flood through here

in and round the walls of your heavy-minded palace
suddenly the air goes miraculously clear
un-cupping your brim of the never-ending chalice
in rushes love’s atmosphere

body, you’re the bell sounding through the heavy pulling
ringing out a calm from the belly of your sway
all there is to do now is really re-remember
that love is and tune its way

body is your bell sounding through the heavy pulling
ringing out a calm from the belly of your sway
all there is to do now is really re-remember
that love is and tune its way

Right, Tucker is only saying that whites are losing their voting rights because scary brown people are being imported by Jews to vote. It’s not the white replacement theory at all.//

Today I went to bridal/prom stores to find a new dress to wear to my granddaughter’s wedding. I attended my grandson’s wedding on Zoom because Z & I were getting our 2nd Pfizer shots that day!

Anyway, the good news: I found a nice dress at the second store I visited. This happens to be the same store where I bought the dress that I wore to my youngest son’s wedding in 2008.

The bad news: It needs a shitload of alterations because I am about the size and shape of a fire hydrant!

The worse news: I need “foundation undergarments” or what they used to call back in my great-grandma’s day, “a corset.”

I understand completely. Our treatment of black people is inhuman. Has been, still is.

We need to do a total reset on our relationship with minorities in this country. “Equal rights under the law” is just that.

If we aren’t living up to it, people need to go to prison.

That will stop the abuse fast. Fuck with peoples’ rights, got to the greybar motel for ten years and concentrate on and repent your sins.

Because some cops became cops because they are sociopaths and enjoy killing people: black, white, yellow, brown. Some just focus in on black people.

Why do bank robbers rob banks? That’s where the money is.

Why do pedophiles hang around the Brownies and Cub Scouts, Vacation Bible Schools and Youth Religion retreats? That’s where the kids are.

ckkatz  Apr 12, 2021 • 8:26:16pm

Exactly!

Looking at the body cam footage, I see a situation that was completely under control until the third officer walked up and intervened.

The driver appears completely compliant until the third officer physically intervenes. At which point the driver attempts and succeeds in breaking free of the original officer.

Then the third officer basically steps between the original officer and the driver, draws a pistol and fires, killing the driver.

The third officer interfered with an apparently uneventful stop and unilaterally ensured that it went completely off the rails within seconds.

re: #107 austin_blue

Two male cops walk up to the car, one on each side. Cop on the driver’s side is black, trailed by a white female (?, hard to say, but that’s what I’m hearing) cop, shooter. Cop on the other side is a white.

Black cop has the kid outside the car and is trying to lace him up. Seems to be having trouble getting the cuffs on. Kid is still docile. Shooter walks up and reaches for the kid’s right arm, which he is using to grip his left arm behind his back.

As the shooter touches him, he pulls his arms apart and gets into the car. Black cop tries to pull him back out. They struggle. Shooter pulls a gun and tries to get a clean shot on the kid. Black cop pulls back as the kid puts the car in gear. Shooter fires at him at least once, hitting him in the torso as the car rolls forward. Shot distance, maybe ten feet.

Kid struggles at :43, shooter pulls gun at :47, fires at :52.

Both of the other cops look at the shooter with a “What did you just do?” look. Neither of them has drawn a weapon.

Didn’t quite see it that way. Before the female officer tries to grab him the arresting officer is already having trouble getting the cuffs on and Daunte tenses and moves toward the drivers door at which point the first officers stops trying to cuff him and moves his body around to half block him from moving and gives him a verbal warning he says “Don’t…don’t do it, don’t do it” That happens before the other officer tries to grab his arm.

Isn’t that cop 101? If it isn’t, isn’t that a good reason not to be certified as a cop?

Ah, that explains why they came out so fast with the “accident” story line. Sorry officer, but that still shows an utter disregard for human life that rates as 2nd degree murder to me.

My guess is they’ll wait to see the outcome of the Chauvin trial; if he’s found guilty, she’ll be indicted but if he walks, they’ll find an excuse to avoid an indictment.

Oh, dear, a 25-year veteran?

Seems like after 25 years on the force, you would know that the service gun is on the strong hand, and the Taser is on the weak hand.

Getting confused after being a police officer for 25 years about where your lethal and non-lethal weapons are on your belt seems like a really stupid defense.

If I was an attorney, I would play the body camera footage and fuck the cops.

Do you really think she warned of tasing twice and then yelled taser taser taser! as a cover because she really intended to murder someone and knew she would need it for plausible deniability?

It may be stupid but it is pretty clearly what happened. It doesn’t remove her culpability, but it certainly isn’t intentional murder.

The cop who shot Walter Scott in the back while Scott was running away… yelled into his radio “OMG he took my taser”. And then walked over to the body and put his taser in Scott’s cold dead hand.

Honestly, once the Taser was deployed, lethal weapons should have been required to be kept in a locked box in the squad car trunk unless orders from above said they can use them. It is very rare to run into a situation that can not be handled with less lethal weapons like the taser. I knew a cop in Madison who the only time he pulled his firearm, he used it as a blackjack and damaged the revolver in the process. They actually issued him a cosh to use after that and he never pulled his firearm again in a 30 year career - through the 60’s & 70’s I might add. He remains one of the best cops I’ve ever known.

A lethal firearm on every hip combined with the unconstitutional idea of qualified immunity is why we have the problems with police that we do.

🌹UOJB!  Apr 12, 2021 • 9:36:19pm

My Spidey sense is telling me that there are several things that just don’t fit.

Among them

The City Council just fired the City Manager and gave the Mayor control of the police force.

The Mayor hasn’t fired the police chief who insists that the officer must go thru the internal review process.

What did the victim’s girlfriend do? Did she use her phone? Was she threatened?

Why was the body cam footage immediately released?

Was that officer involved in other shootings? Did she pull the same stunt before without a body cam?

Why does a 25 year police veteran mistake her pistol for a taser?

Was she called onto the scene after the other two officers?

Was this deliberately done to trigger a mistrial or hung jury in the Chauvin trial?

There’s something here that’s just not right that we’re precluded from seeing!

I would much rather be a consultant on Emergency Response work, which was the last fifteen years of my working life.

But again, I’m happy to be done with it, unless someone gets their ass in a crack.

Then, if you want me to work for you, you need to make me very happy with a very good day rate. I’ve got the medical covered, but you need to make it rain on my house.

hi

On the subject of police officers and the use of weapons only when the officer or others are in imminent danger, we have that in the Nebraska Panhandle tonight.

Authorities investigating Alliance police-officer involved shooting (Scottsbluff Star-Herald)

According to a press release from Alliance Police Chief Philip Lukens, an officer with the Alliance Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Saturday, April 10 at approximately midnight. The driver of the vehicle fled the city and the officer pursued, however, due to extreme driving, the officer discontinued the pursuit.

A short time later, an officer was dispatched to a report of an attempted carjacking at knifepoint. While this was occurring, another officer who was bringing a prisoner into the jail on an arrest observed a vehicle drive into the police department parking lot at a high rate of speed. The driver was screaming for help, while the driver in the vehicle involved in the earlier pursuit was chasing and ramming the driver. An altercation occurred and the officer discharged their firearm.

The suspect fled. Additional officers were called and an officer observed a fight in progress at Third and Box Butte where the same suspect was allegedly attempting to carjack the driver of another car at knifepoint. The suspect was apprehended without incident.

Box Butte County Attorney Terry Curtiss was notified and his office took over the officer-involved shooting investigation, Lukens said. They requested the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate the shooting incident. There is body cam footage of the incident, which will be released from the police department as soon as the county attorney deems appropriate.

Car-jackings at knifepoint and ramming cars in the police department parking lot seems like an imminent threat.

The Panhandle Public Health District says that persons aged 18+ are now able to get the vaccine. Moreover, pharmacies in Wal*Mart and Safeway are now able to administer the vaccine under the federal distribution programme, as well as some physicians.

Additionally, the Pfizer vaccine will be available here soon, as refrigeration capacity for the vaccine has been installed here. Currently the Moderna and Johnson+Johnson versions are the only ones available.

Three have been captured, two escaped. The motel is owned by a county commissioner.

Victim, suspects identified in ‘convoluted’ Rapid City motel homicide, kidnapping (Rapid City, SD Journal)

WTF with the criming around here. Scottsbluff, Alliance, Chadron, Rapid City. Did someone turn on the anti-Bat Signal?

Five suspects have been identified in relation to a Friday Rapid City homicide but none are charged with murder and four are accused of assaulting and kidnapping the fifth defendant.

The homicide involves a shooting inside a motel room, a group that fled in two vehicles, a standoff with people from one of those cars, two at-large suspects, kidnapping and possibly meth distribution, according to the Rapid City Police Department.

Paramedics also found a holster and magazine but no gun on the fifth defendant who was kidnapped and assaulted, according to his police report.

This case is “very convoluted” and “very, very far from being wrapped up,” police spokesman Brendyn Medina said Monday.

Infection risk in the Panhandle has increased (possibly due to the B 1.1.7 variant arriving here).

Positivity rate has increased to 10.4%.
Highest age groups are 20-29 and 40-49.
Women are still two-thirds of cases.
Only three people are in hospital.
One-third of Panhandle residents are now vaccinated.

Only one town is at high risk (Sidney). Thirteen are at moderate risk, and seven are at low risk. Three remain at no risk (including mine).

Biden Republicans? Some in GOP open to president’s agenda (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jay Copan doesn’t hide his disregard for the modern Republican Party.

A solid Republican voter for the past four decades, the 69-year-old quickly regretted casting his 2016 ballot for Donald Trump. When Trump was up for reelection last year, Copan appeared on roadside billboards across North Carolina, urging other Republicans to back Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Nearly three months into the new administration, Copan considers himself a “Biden Republican,” relieved by the new president’s calmer leadership style and coronavirus vaccine distribution efforts. Copan is the type of voter Biden is counting on as he pushes an agenda that’s almost universally opposed by Republicans in Washington.

We also have central air but it doesn’t run in the day unless it’s over 95F outside, after 11 PM it runs if it is over 76F inside.

Most expensive bills are September and October. Those are between $900-$1100.

Crap, for some reason I got bumped off-line.

We have a state-owned electric company (socialism for the win).

We have an electric water heater, and replaced our electric range with a gas one a few years ago (that’s helping now in the Days of No Furnace).

Lighting is a mix of incandescent and florescent. Incandescent lamps are mostly 60W or 75W, the exceptions being two 4W lamps in the ceiling fan (that’s usually the only lighting we use in our front room), a 15W front porch lamp (that’s really all you need), 2x150W flood lamps for the back porch (usually turned off), and a 300W lamp in the cellar (to keep our pipes from freezing).

yeah I calculated I’d need a a 50 KW solar panel array and the ability to store about half of what it generated to power me through the night. The cost has to come down. I’m still waiting on panel power densitiy/cost ratio to get near a usable level. It’s like the PC waiting for the Internet to give it enough of a purpose that compensates for the cost.

I renewed my driver’s license on-line today. The state, however, outsourced its services to a private corporation, which charges $4 for its service and $1 for a “security fee” (whatever that is).

Ugh. There may have been a better setup for getting World Series tickets in ‘07 (which was a disastrous example of one of the first times that they were available online) in Denver than to get a vaccine appointment.

You’d think they could just set up a wait list for the appointments themselves rather than just sending out the invites and then expecting people to be able to predict the time the schedules for the week get released, and then be online within 30 minutes of that.

That is completely foreign to me. Here in the upper Midwest, my electric bill ranges between $100-$200/month for a single-family home with 4 people; I have an electric oven, all LED light bulbs, and a family that is very intensive on their electronic devices. My dryer is gas, as is my water heater and furnace. This causes my gas bill to fluctuate between $20/mo in the summer, when my only gas usage is the occasional laundry run and keeping the water warm, and $150/mo in the dead of winter when the furnace runs constantly. All told, the worst combined utility bill I’ve ever paid has been $400 in one month, and that was with an extra $100 on the electric bill when my heat was out for a week and I was using electric space heaters to keep my house warm in the bitter below-0-°F-daytime cold.

That’s what Nebraska did; the public health districts started wait lists (sorted by priorities of age, essential workers [which caused teachers to threaten to strike when Gov. Ricketts refused to include “government schools”], and certain conditions). Those wait lists were then incorporated into a statewide system.

The public health districts telephone, E-mail, or come visit you at home to tell you when your appointment time is.

Minnesota’s mass vaccination invite system does this. You get an invite, you log on, and they give you a list of the available appointment times. You might have to have a go a few times to get a time slot, with how many people are using it, but you don’t have to rush to try and get an appointment by logging on at 5 in the morning or whatever time.

I think my particular provider network’s system is more like your state’s than not, but the problem is, I’ve tried on 10 different days to see time slots and the response is always “at the very least, any facility you wouldn’t need to borrow your family’s ski condo the next day due to the distance are booked solid”.

And then I called their phone side this morning and leaned that:

-there are appointments only on some subset of “Wednesday through Sunday”; NO location sets Monday or Tuesday appointments.

-the locations set their available windows up only 1 or 2 days in advance, and only for a week at a time.

-Centura releases the slot schedules as soon as it receives them, rather than batching them all out.

All of which add up to:

For any particular facility, there’s an unpredictable 30-to-60 minute window each week when there are open appointment slots.

Note, however, that I did just say “particular provider network”. There isn’t one master state clearinghouse in Colorado for all providers. And considering that too many of our insurers are exclusive-provider orgs or HMOs, I can sort of understand why they’re trying to parcel appointments out by provider rather than configuring and collating at the government level.

re: #119 Chrysicat

That’s a nightmare. To give you the complete picture, here are the ways the state officially says you can get a vaccine in Minnesota:

1) Work with your primary care provider, they’ll tell you when you’re eligible (we all are now, this was from the beginning) and help you get an appointment.
2) Register with the state. They send an email with links to the CDC Vaccine Finder and to a MN-specific map. The map is more like the lottery system; you give it your location and eligibility, it scans the map and finds available appointments at all pharmacies near you. It’s only pharmacies, though; private care providers aren’t listed.
3) Once you’re registered with the state, you’re added to a waiting list (they call it a random selection, but I assume it’s a weighted pool). When you’re selected, you can choose from a list of available appointments at mass vaccination sites run by the state. This was the option I wound up going with, and Mrs. Fish will probably end up with.

My mother is in Chicago. Aside from how messed up the system in Illinois is, I’m trying to work her around vaccine hesitancy issues (she’s not sure whether the vaccine has been vetted enough, and this is a woman who had polio before there was a vaccine).

She knows I’ve been completely vaccinated since February, though she is not aware my wife had her first shot already.

I’ll try to take another stab at this tomorrow with her. Hundreds of millions of doses of the various vaccines have been administered around the world, with virtually no issue (there has been concern over the AstraZenica vaccine, but I do not have sufficient knowledge to know whether the blood clot issue with it is a real concern or a spurious correlation).

Tell ya what - if I can kill you with my vaccine, you have a valid point. However, in this case, the opposite is actually closer to your analogy: You, the unlicensed gun owner carrying concealed, represent a valid threat to me because I don’t know if you are armed and your weapon can kill me without any fault of my own. You should have to present a card that says you are not carrying a gun to be allowed to function as a member of public society.

Private businesses are still doing this in 2021.

Wedding venue refuses gay couple because of what “God says in the Bible” (LGBTQ Nation)

The venue says it’s the real victim of religious discrimination because they were “respectful and kind” about their anti-LGBTQ policy.

(They are respectful and kind bigot and lawbreaker Christians. And they’re the real victims.)

The estate has since stood by its decision, claiming that while they’re happy to serve or “welcome” vendors, guests and employees of all orientations, they “believe in the sanctity of marriage.”

“Highgrove has always welcomed vendors, guests and employees of all orientations and we do not discriminate against a people or group,” their statement read. “We believe in the sanctity of marriage as God says in the Bible that marriage is between a man and a woman and we choose to honor Him above what the world decides what marriage should be.”

And between a man and several women, and between a man and the girls he captured in combat, and a man and all the women and all their concubines, and the woman he raped, &c &c &c but sure, your book is the paragon of marriage morals.

Side note on the blood clot and bleeding side effect of some CoViD-19 vaccines:
I recently saw an article about an article published in a prestigious medical journal, where Norwegian researchers noted that those who get this side effect have sky high numbers of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in their blood stream.

Which is consonant with both the hypothesis among some researchers that when giving the vaccine, the intramuscular needle nicks a blood vessel and deposits some of the vaccine in the blood stream, as well as the hypothesis that some individuals immune systems react much more strongly to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In the first case, researchers are looking into whether aspirating when giving the intramuscular injection to confirm that a blood vessel hasn’t been nicked will put a dent in the number of occurences of this side effect combo.

It will depend on how many doses were administered to the populations involved. You have to look at total doses administered, doses administered by gender, race, and age. Given that we’ve only started dropping age requirements to 16/18 in parts of the country, that means that the number of vaccinations in below 40 population could be quite limited. Identify the issue and get ahead of it before it becomes more serious - or realize that it was a correlation not causation situation and that these people had conditions that influenced the outcomes seen. Or statistical fluke (like coin flipping heads 5 times in a row). Either way, we want to be careful.

We have a tankless water heater to save energy and gas furnace and oven. For electric we have all LED lighting, no TV but 3 modern box computers that run all day and an electric dryer. We also have central air but it doesn’t run in the day unless it’s over 95F outside, after 11 PM it runs if it is over 76F inside.

I just got used to my PG&E bill. It wasn’t until a solar salesman showed me that my rates in 2011 when I bought the house were 13 cents and today I pay 24 cents that I realized it really has doubled in just over a decade. So we’re getting solar with battery backup.

We’ll still have about $75/mo in gas for stove and heat…though we tend to run the house cool most of the time.

My WTF Facebook moment today:

My Dad died recently of stage IV NSCL cancer; during his last two weeks his only social interaction was through facebook because he’s extremely hard of hearing & tech challenged. His leather crafting group, his friends, his family were his normal FB interactions. At the end he was severely depressed, approaching suicidal, and refused to eat most days (we kept him alive by making smoothies with muscle milk & frozen fruits at the bitter end, he just would not eat.) When ever he went to facebook, instead of getting encouraging posts from his family and friends, FB topped his feed with plane crash, shipwreck, riot, and other disaster videos. That was what he watched his final two weeks. Strange thing now: My FB is now infested with plane crash vids.

I read that it was somewhere around 57%. Which, if it were the only vaccine on the planet, I’d be like “get it in me.” Compared to the rest of them, though, It’s really low.

Before I started teleworking at home my electric bill from the Los Angeles DWP was $70/month. But now it’s averaged $195 since last March because of the heating & air conditioning. When the air conditioner starts up in my main room the power meter goes into overdrive even when I set it to 85 degrees.

It sounds very likely that you could use better insulation, if you own you should look into subsidy programs at the local electric company. If you rent, try someplace else?

interesting features in the new version of Wordpress:

From HTTP to HTTPS in a single click
Starting now, switching a site from HTTP to HTTPS is a one-click move. WordPress will automatically update database URLs when you make the switch. No more hunting and guessing!

New Robots API
The new Robots API lets you include the filter directives in the robots meta tag, and the API includes the max-image-preview: large directive by default. That means search engines can show bigger image previews, which can boost your traffic (unless the site is marked not-public).

Single apartments in my area that are vacant—the rent starts at $1950/month unfurnished. Utilities not included.

Not to mention Mississippi is not a huge tourist destination so we’re at less risk from the variants and we have far more temperate winters down here so it’s a hell of a lot easier to spend time outdoors and keep distance from people. Our afternoon highs have been at least 60 for the last few weeks.

with the necessity of work-from-home, it’s become apparent that it is not simply sitting people in a different chair. a whole lot of incidental and semi-hidden costs have fallen on workers that used to be paid by their employers

dedicated space to work, electric, heat/ac, supplies, computers and adequate broadband, telephones and on and on

meanwhile a lot of those costs have gone down at the office. sure rent is stuck for now, and some electric, though i’d guess less. but supplies, phone, and a host of other things have dropped to near zero for those at home employees. (eta - i.e. that those companies used to pay for when people came to ‘the office’)

i cant say how many employers have seen this and picked up the ball by either increasing salaries or reimbursing those expenses.

for those who aren’t, well, you just got a pay cut that’s going right to the corporate bottom line

As Targetpractice said last evening, there can be complications related to vaccines or medications rushed to market, although the circumstances can justify the policy. There is another issue; trials have perhaps tens of thousands of participants. When dealing with extremely rare occurrences, as in this case where the reaction is 1 in a million, trials are not likely to detect such a problem. In any case, the medical community has to weigh risk vs benefit. For a potentially lethal disease like coronavirus that also has long-term serious effects, the benefit of protection can be well worth this risk.

We went solar 2.5 years ago. It’s amazing; NJ has a really good solar credit program and our panels face due south on the back of the house. The solar credits pay for like 90% of the loan and our electric bill from March to October is $5.

We got an extra 2kw added to the system for having an electric car, so our numbers are padded a bit, but even without that, we’d still be doing great.

My brother got solar installed a few years back in western NY. Panels are south facing and on the back side of the garage. His monthly electric bill is $5 or less. Since he generally heats the house with a wood stove and uses well water he is to a large degree semi-independent. City water has come out along the road, but he’d have to pay for the connection (trench and 2” pipe) from the road to his house - which is not a short distance away. He’d consider it simply due to the cost/effort to keep himself in the treatment supplies for the well water.

You are correct that the real estate management div of every fortune 500 company is loving every minute of this pandemic.

Hahahahahaha. I have lived in Bisbee for 15 years. It’s not as cheap as it used to be, the broadband sucks, jobs are scarce, and monsoon season is slowly fading.

At least you can have a cold brew at Tombstone. I know the brewer there, he’s really good.

It must be a series; YouTube recommended for me Johnson walking around a British town with Robert Plant. Gotta check these out thanks!

Dead thread but anyway — unless your employer pays you from the moment you step out of your front door in the morning to the time you close it behind you after you get home, a 1-hour commute each way to the office or workplace is effectively ten hours of unpaid labour each week they get free from you. On top of that it’s ten hours of your life you’ll never get back when compared to working from home.
