Anglo-Saxon political traditions?

So, a monarchy? Goddamned Nazis? Do they want people to ignore that Saxony is part of modern Germany these days?

It’s all so convoluted dumbassery masquerading as something smart when all it is is warmed over Nazism and GOPers showing their white nationalist/autocratic tendencies.

re: #282 DesertDenizen

In another universe I ate my 1911 in a bipolar mixed episode. There is a reason I no longer own firearms. We cannot forget the preventable suicides caused by easy access to firearms.

This is why I refuse to own a firearm, even though I’ve always adored shooting for sport. I would be a danger to myself and my family if I kept one in the house. My opinion, I shouldn’t HAVE to make it my own choice; I should be legally barred from owning a gun.

The brazen excuses that right-wing shitsmears come up with to justify their grift is …

… I dunno, at this point, kind of an art form?

At some level, the fact that the Fox News-watching yokels just wave this tidal wave of stealing away to focus on Dr. Seuss, Mr Potato & trans kids is just confirmation that they really don’t deserve to have Nice Things at all, really.

More from downstairs

Lubbock has an interesting ballot proposition coming up on May 1.
Lubbock, Texas, Proposition, Abortion Ban Within City Limits Initiative (May 2021)

A “yes” vote supports amending city ordinances to outlaw abortion within city limits and declaring Lubbock a Sanctuary City for the Unborn.

A “no” vote opposes amending city ordinances to outlaw abortion within city limits and declaring Lubbock a Sanctuary City for the Unborn.

It’s pretty draconian.

The arch-conservative city administration opposes it on legal grounds. Last year, they consulted an outside legal firm on its legality and the result was a very emphatic “No.”

The yokel right-to-life gang is undeterred, since the law is of no consequence to them. A few years ago, when there was still an actual abortion provider in Lubbock, I posted an eyewitness description of these crazies in action.

East Texas pastor Mark Lee Dickson is the driving force behind this:

Of course, to them that doesn’t count, both California and Andalusia are both names of partial Arabic origin. Assuming they know that, of course.

(California was a mythical pagan, pro-Muslim Island from a Spanish romance from around that time, ruled by Queen Califia, whose name was obviously a derivative of the Arabic title “Khalifa”.

Andalusia is a Latinized form of the Arabic al-Andalus, which is an Arabized form of the Germanic name “Vandal”.

It may be ridiculous to believe that most conservatives believe that anthropogenic climate change is real but if you can _convince_ them that climate change denial puts them in the minority of conservatives, it just might get more of them to question their own beliefs.

FWIW, even Matt Gaetz is an climate change believer — even I believe a believer in anthropogenic climate change, Though any one from Florida who doesn’t believe it exists is a few standard deviations above the normal level of self delusion for Trump supporters…

Segregationists yammered quite a bit about the “Anglo-Saxon heritage” during the Jim Crow era.

The Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America was extremely active in the years and months leading up to the unveiling of the Lee Statue in May 1924. In contrast to hyper-visible and violent white supremacist organizations like the Ku Klux Klan, the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America cultivated a respectable image and branded themselves as an alternative to the Ku Klux Klan; however, the spread of white supremacist organizations through the ranks of respectable society indicates the means, membership, and momentum of individuals with white supremacist beliefs to influence legislative outcomes.

I wonder about that “Anglo-Saxon” architecture they yammer about.. the last native English architecture I can think of is Tudor before the Gothic and Classical style periods re-imagined up through Victorian times but in any case all these styles are adaptations and evolutions of earlier Italian, French, and Greek designs…. hardly “Anglo-Saxon.”

The cultural influence of ancient Greece is curious amongst our racist American loony-birds. It is not uncommon for many of these creatures to consider Greeks to be “too swarthy” to be counted among the purely “white”. Why they insist of counting this style as “anglo-Saxon” is beyond me.

Oh, on the contrary:

The majority of conservative politicians believe in climate change, they’ve just accepted that it will happen because their base assumption is that anyone that suffers and dies in the process deserved it. There are many belief systems, but they are a unified bloc in envisioning what comes next as an opportunity to prove their ideology. They engage in denial because they refuse to accept that it will be a problem, but because they can’t say the entirety of what they think—that people who suffer and die will deserve it—they have to occlude their precise belief with a broader denial.

Which is a least part of why alongside climate denialism they want to shut down both refugee and immigration programs: their fantasy is a walled nation where they can redistribute resources and land in accordance with their priorities. It’s shock doctrine stuff: create the problem, monetize the problem, attempt to monetize the solution, socialize the losses.

The racists want the world to collapse because they think it will prove the inferiority of others and create opportunity to formerly codify America as a white ethnostate. The Social Darwinists simply don’t believe that the rich should be stopped to save the poor, but also fantasize about a proving ground for their more violent fantasies of superiority. The conservative Christians want an apocalypse (pre millenial dispensationalists), a theocracy (post millenial dispensationalists), and further substantiation they’re the truly virtuous people rewarded by God (prosperity gospel)…or all three, since these people aren’t really cleaving to any idea, even a theology. The very, very rich individuals and institutions see collapse as an opportunity to acquire more capital while also devaluing human life and normal people’s capital.

This is what the Republican Party now is: a solidarity between chauvinist groups that would prefer devastation that grants them more license to conscientious change that would diminish their power by acting recognizing more people as worth of life and freedom from suffering.

i understand the fear here.
if they take his on everyone’s say-so, they could take mine.
absurd maybe, but way less absurd and more possible than ‘biden is coming for your guns’.

- there should be a mechanism to get the firearms removed from those who might be on the edge

- there should also be a due process mechanism to get them back because whatever standard is used to remove them, could easily be abused by others seeking to cause trouble. like the wrong people on no-fly lists etc.

but here’s the overarching point:

in most of these situations, what is the actual harm in having multiple weapons taken away - even for a time while due process, well…processes?

it can’t be “then i have no way to protect myself”.
because from what? and how with this arsenal?

this is NOT that situation they paint of the scared abused spouse who needs a gun today, not three days from today, for personal protection, so all waiting periods are unfair

Funny: when I see the term “Anglo-Saxon architecture” I think mainly of wattle-and-daub huts with thatched roofs (and only one interior wall to separate the people from the livestock).

Time to call it a day. I’m reading that though there’s no known motive yet for the FedEx shooting, law enforcement has seized computers and other electronic media belonging to the perp.

I imagine they’ll find out in short order what his online presence looked like, what sort of things he was reading/posting about, etc., and they’ll probably be able to deduce a plausible motive soon enough.

And with that, good night Lizards and stay healthy.

Every gun restriction is part of the slippery slope which inevitably leads to the jack booted thugs confiscating all of their guns so that they can’t defend themselves from the globalist one world government tyranny.

The core of whiteness is an incoherent gathering-up of shiny historical and cultural objects, plus famous people, to create a false continuity in which what is good is “white” and what is bad isn’t.

This action needs to be looked at in those terms: there’s no specific intent, just an aestheticism that the participants desperately want to view as having greater meaning than aestheticism.

“Well, technically that excludes White people” doesn’t matter because every reification of whiteness is built on contradictions and arbitrary inclusions/exclusions.

Semantics can’t land a strike because they’ve already abandoned the idea of meaning.

Yep.

The thing you see in common with all these reactionary nutters is that they don’t really believe in meaning as a thing unto itself that has value or constrains choice; they believe in authority that can transform meaning freely to justify itself. Words don’t mean anything outside of their utility, and thus concepts and ideals that should be solid are hollow.

The other thing that accompanies this a base assumption that they are, individually and collectively, in the top half of whatever pyramid-shaped hierarchy they’re dabbling in. They never think about the ramifications of any particular concept in terms of being the subordinate or how the system could invert…which is why all their plans either turn into a spectacular bonfire or a pump-and-dump scheme.

This is why it’s so hard to discern an authentic reactionary from a scammer: both are using a framework—words and concepts exist only to the extent they’re functional in the moment—to ends that easily dovetail.

I like the phrase “axiomatically dishonest” for summarizing right wing arguments/apologetics.

What they are really for is horrid, so all arguments in favor of right wing policies must be more or less dishonest to cover this up, as long at they aren’t in a position to impose a final solution by force.

Memories of Grandma Bacon’s banana shortbread cookies

1 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
2/3 cup icing sugar
1 cup butter, softened
2 medium ripe bananas, mashed
Juice of 1/2 medium lemon

Preheat the oven to 375˚F
In a medium bowl, combine the flours, cornstarch and sugar.
In a separate bowl, mix together the butter, banana and the lemon juice. Slowly mix together the dry ingredients until fully incorporated.
Drop the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden. Remove and let cool on wire racks.

Okay—

the “Anglo Saxon” bit isn’t indicative that’s there’s something wrong with these people. Nor does the gross “America First.”

Their stated records as paranoid authoritarians who don’t believe in democracy matters.

Focusing on the aesthetics and the symbolic indicators compared to what they say on a regular basis is an error.

The racist mask fell off a long time ago. The election of Donald Trump was the big reveal. Ever since then it’s been just festooning the White Power uniform with more and more gaudy medals and polishing the buttons. This Anglo-Saxon Caucus medal is just the shiniest one yet.

It’s both, really. Fascists run more on aesthetics than they do on their lying word-vomit. In fact, once someone is known to be a fascist, treating what they say as anything other than lying word-vomit is a category error the US press routinely makes.

E.g., just look at how the George Washington in their image is a disgusting cross between Trump and Mussolini.

Did not Trump claim that he was looking into whether to start a new political identity?

And did not Linda McMahon just start a group to funnel even more money to Trump?

I had posted this earlier upstream. I/we did covers of Peter Frampton tunes in the 70’s. He took some shots for the marketing, teeny bopper, which was lame, but talent wise he’s a damn good player. Did talk box before most. Back when a talk box could blow your amp up.
And why I post this is because just last week I heard George Harrison singing in my head.
This tune.
And today he posts this. He’s got a new album/CD/MP3 whatever you want to call it coming out.
And this is just nice, as I suspect Peter is.

I am here for just a few minutes. I just viewed and purchased another Frontline show. It is called American Insurrection. It is about the riots that DT encouraged before and during Jan 6th. I will say yes it is a bit disturbing but it must be understood that this has been going on for quite a while. And the fact that one Oath keeper has pleaded guilty this is only the beginning of fighting this menace.

Matt Gaetz’s former girlfriend has told friends she’s worried that the woman who is key to the federal government’s sex-crimes investigation tried to get her to incriminate the Florida lawmaker on a recorded call,” Politico reports.

“The revelation raises the possibility that federal prosecutors have two top cooperating witnesses: the woman who was an alleged sex-trafficking victim when she was a minor and the Gaetz associate already indicted for that crime, former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg.”

Upper part of the mountain is the business, great steep high alpine terrain: Whale’s Tail, Horseshoe Bowl, Lake Chutes, always a good time. Lower half of the mountain, for a guy like me, it’s ho hum, not enough pitch to be exciting. Both of these aspects is why it’s just a great place to ski.
