LYRICS

I can feel my breathing, it’s so nice
It’s like a blanket of my life
Let me stay here for forever
In this state of classical denial
Cranking Mrs Dalloway
Moby Dick, trip on a whale
He’s kind of just like me
We’re thirsty for the deep

I’m gonna rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
I just don’t care, I just don’t care
Rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
You think I care, I just don’t care
I just don’t care
I’m barely there
I just don’t care

Count on me to show support for
Winston Smith in 1984
‘Cause battling Big Brother feels more meaningful
Than binging zombie hordes
Take me off to Neverland
Hanging with your Yossarian
He’s kind of just like me
We fight ‘til we get free

I’m gonna rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
I just don’t care, I just don’t care
Rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
You think I care, I just don’t care
I just don’t care
I’m barely there
I just don’t care

I’ve been here, an open mind
I can see without my eyes
Frodo jonesing for the ring
Soon I’ll be dead, smiling
Smiling in the tree

I’m gonna rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
I just don’t care, I just don’t care
Rock my audible
Headphone Grapes of Wrath
Drift off to oblivion
You think I care, I just don’t care
I just don’t care
I’m barely there
I just don’t care

That is what the GQP does. Make everything worse, then blame the Democrats for it. And the media say “why won’t the parties get together and fix this?”

This morning in Huntington Beach, conspiracy dupe protesting in front of an open Baskin-Robbins. The Rocky Road to free-dumb! Taste the tyranny!

One of the kids in my boy scout troop was the son of an aviation simulation pioneer named Rudy Frasca. Rudy also loved to restore vintage planes, esp., WWII planes. It was a treat to go out to their airfield and see the planes. I don’t at all remember what I saw though. I know several were used in various war movies.

ETA: sorry, it was the video of the vintage restored plane ditching in the prior thread that made me think of this.

He also voted against medical marijuana while in office. But now there is money to be made. Fuck him.
See the Tea Party? He loved him some Tea Party. Who are now the Freedom Caucus who are now openly fascist but John is a good guy.

Rudy Frasca, who died last May at age 89, was famous in the aviation world, mostly for his developments in flight simulation but also for his collection of warbirds. Here he is with his P-40E Warhawk:

He also owned a Mitsubishi Zero, a Spitfire and many others but the humble Piper Cub was probably his favorite.

What’s the same in both nonbootable configurations?
Video card? The case power button? Are other pci cards present?
You could have gotten a bad replacement motherboard or power supply, but it’s more likely something that was not swapped out.

Notes from home:

* My brother got the Moderna vaccine (#2) on Thursday and it KICKED.HIS.ASS. He said his chest hurt like he’d cracked a rib or two. He’s mostly recovered but it laid him low on Friday and Saturday. I congratulated him on having a vigorous response to the vaccine—“at least you know they didn’t give you a placebo.”

* Then we had some maundering and noodling about post-vaccine life, including the need to wear masks. But hey, we three are now completely vaccinated and that is great! Five months ago (after the election) the vaccine rollout looked like shit and I was thinking it’d be this fall before I got the vaccines. Joe Biden took the bull by the horns and got this going. Can you imagine what it would be like if The Former Guy had gotten reelected?

On board video, no expansion cards. Only thing I haven’t swapped out is the cpu. I’m going to need to get it tested with a known good one and that could get expensive.

The shooting took place up in Northwest Austin. Apartments up there are not cheap. Arboretum Oaks (site) charges $1200 for a 600 sq ft 1/1. Lots of students from UT live up there.

Cleaned out my basement window wells earlier. Just the way the fence and house is creates a spot for leaves to gather. Got a vac shredder and as I was clearing I see a red and blue….. it’s a vinyl Trump sign. Had to bend over and pick it up. Fuck me.
Most around here have taken off their bumper stickers and signs down, but one family a few doors away, who belong to a “church” that forbids dancing still has their Trump bumper stickers on.
How the fuck does that work?

The Detroit News, October 2, 2020:

Lansing — In a landmark ruling with far-reaching implications, the Michigan Supreme Court decided Friday that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer violated her constitutional authority by continuing to issue orders to combat COVID-19 without the approval of state lawmakers.

The state’s high court ruled 4-3 that a state law allowing the governor to declare emergencies and keep them in place without legislative input — the 1945 Emergency Powers of the Governor Act — is unconstitutional.

The court was unanimous in ruling that a separate law — the 1976 Emergency Management Act — did not give Whitmer the power, after April 30, to issue or renew any executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic after 28 days without Legislative approval.

The ruling, which was requested by a federal judge earlier this year, serves as advice to the federal court and indicates how the court would rule on a suit challenging Whitmer’s emergency powers.

My problem is that even though I’ll be in the theoretically ‘immune’ category by next week, I still don’t want to go out do things like see the Phillies or go to a restaurant for fear that’s it’s still irresponsible to do that shit. I really need to read up on this stuff more.

This is a million dollars in 100s:

As you can see, it’s not an overly impressive pile. Back in the day I worked briefly for an armored car company. I had their rural route, which was pretty cushy compared to the in-town pick-up routes: Just a few stops, mostly at small town banks. One of our non-bank stops was a sheriff’s office. They usually had a few thousand dollars in cash, bail money and fines, but one day they had a little over a million bucks, mostly in hundreds.
I couldn’t help asking how they had come across such a stash. They explained that a local fatcat had been arrested for murdering his wife’s lover. The judge set his bail at a million dollars. After some back and forth and a 48 hour delay, the fatcat’s lawyer arrived at the sheriff’s office with the required loot in a brown paper bag.The fatcat was duly released. I never did learn how the case ended.

Long before you got there? You mean back in the 1980s when you were paying ISI billions to overthrow the central government?

We’re having a springtime santa ana today. Don’t like it. RH is down to 9%.

Loquats are not happy. They are a couple of weeks away from being ripe, and days like today just messes them up. Many were sunburnt a couple of weeks ago during out hot spell.

There is a slight chance of rain in a few days, but it is likely not going to be much at all, more like a morning drizzle.

It’s going to be a dry year ahead. We didn’t get nearly enough rain in the winter.

More “recent” than US involvement is British Empire and British East India Company’s First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842)

Lots more debacles in Afghanistan before and after that do not involve the USA

yeah, but we’re apparently still the bad guys.

Ever since WWII we have played cop/empire-builder in south-west Asia.

All too often the expense (whether in dollars or lives) has been justified by what seems like good arguments at the time.

But the reality of humanity and this planet is working against us. We can’t run the world. No one can.

We can enforce our will on a locale, for a time. We are so rich we can do that.

But time works against us, too.

I, for one, think this whole effort of the US, which emerged strongly with the Spanish-American War, to be the global hegemony is coming to an end.

We’ve spent our wealth. We’ve done our invasions.

Whether in some parallel universe there was another outcome I do not know.

But the current outcome is that we have frittered away so much, when we need to be working for the well-being of humans in coming centuries.

Because the coming centuries are going to be difficult.

Blaming all of this on us …

Which I did not do.

What I hope we realize is that as a nation we have often made choices that had expenses that were not worth the cost.

Getting outside of the mythology of America, which permeates so much of popular thought in the US, and looking at us as an outsider, we have made many investments in war machines and have executed many wars… but for what?

When the US was expanding westward - by killing the natives and rewarding the US combatants by giving them the land they conquered - one could argue there was a real return on such warfare.

But being a global policeman (post WWII) has at best intangible value. If one is worried about “legacy” and hoping you’ll be remembered in a thousand years, every US President from Truman thru Trump will meet the goal of being in history books a thousand years from now (assuming there are humans writing history books.)

But in the here and now, our policing the world has cost us much.

There’s a house in the next town who had a Trump 2020 3x5 yard sign that was up until a few weeks ago.

It’s now, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For Trump”.

Um…. what are we blaming you for? An economy on the mend, jobs coming back, a competent vaccine rollout nationally, and Trump facing lawsuits/prosecutions, all while his followers are facing trials and plea deals for their insurrection. And Stone faces tax evasion charges.

Trump killed 500,000+ Americans. That’s the only metric that matters. He wrecked the nation, undermined our natsec, and subverted democracy to try and stay in power despite losing in a landslide.

Empires are parasitic by nature. They infect the colonizing population to do the will of empire—even then the benefits concentrate in a tiny number of people—then spread to the colonized—not only sucking value from them, but trying to make the accept the “logic” of empire. Both the colonizer and the colonized end up suffering…though not to the same degree…while only the parasitic organism itself thrives.

That’s where we are: the parasite has now reached the point that it doesn’t need Americans as vehicles of transmission, so it can just…do colonial fuckery to Americans until they’re all drained and broken.

What we did in other countries, to other people, was a test run of tactics now being applied with the country. Once it became profitable, the “us” and “them” distinction that defined banana republics and CIA coups and our colonial holdings and proxy wars was dissolved in favor of a narrower “us” containing only the very rich and the institutions that form a perimeter around them and a broader “them” that is…most of us.

The basic premise of colonialism was the racist and ethnocentric assertion that the colonized must prove their humanity by complying with the wants and needs of the colonizer day after day. The basic premise of many, many different aspects of what’s happening in America right now—with labor, with policing, with environmental issues, with homelessness— is that people are supposed to prove their humanity by having utility to the capital-holding class day by day.

…and the parasite is never going to stop of its own accord. As crises increase, the parasite will just adjust the us/them boundary again and again, such that nobody suffering deserves their life and thus the parasitism isn’t the real problem…ever.

This is why I’m obsessed with anti-colonialism; because it’s needs to be graphically reinforced that the people that told themselves they were the good guys who beat the Nazis then went right back to doing shit the Nazis used as a template. As long as humanity can’t admit that the pattern remains the same, that it’s not just a few bad apple societies that doing wrong-think, then it’s just going to keep happening.

Earlier this week San Diego county changed their Vaccination scoreboard from % of population vaccinated, to % of goal vaccinated.

The goal is 75% of the population, so to compare to old numbers I have to multiply the new numbers by .75 .

So we’re at about 29% of the county fully vaccinated.

That should rise sharply the next couple of weeks as there was a ramp-up in two-shot vaccines at the start of April.

185
lawhawk  Apr 18, 2021 • 4:34:28pm

Well, I’m finally going to try and get myself scheduled for vaccines for the Mrs. and myself. Tomorrow is the first day either of us are eligible here in NJ. We’ve been counting down the days and hours, as we are the last in our immediate families to get vaccinated-eligibility. We’re close to the back-end of our friends too, so once we’ve got our vaccine doses, we could begin to inch back towards normalcy.

Until then, masking/social distancing.

Wait. That’s what post-vaccine looks like too, though we’ll be able to do more with more people.

Eating at a restaurant might be a neat experience. Outdoors. I’d look forward to that.
