Chasing Birds

Chasing birds
To get high
I’m never coming down
Chasing birds
Through the sky
I’m never coming down
My heart is six feet underground

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
Dark inventions of mine
The road to hell is paved with broken parts
Bleeding hearts like mine

Chasing birds
Through the sky
And deep into the black
Chasing birds
Say goodbye
I’m never coming back
Here comes another heart attack

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
Dark inventions of mine
The road to hell is paved with broken parts
Bleeding hearts like mine

Chasing birds
To get high
I’m never coming down
My heart is six feet underground

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
Dark inventions of mine
The road to hell is paved with broken parts
Bleeding hearts like mine

Chasing birds

You really can hear the hopeful wingnut glee that there will be massive riots tonight so they can tell themselves that they were right to oppose this verdict.

What the hell would a barbarian like Carlson know about civilization?

Civilization just describes someone primed to do something really violent in a really organized fashion.

From the previous thread:

re: #117 Ace Rothstein

I am happily eating a lot of crow tonight, because here at LGF about a month ago I said Chauvin would walk. This crow actually tastes pretty good!

Added: After looking at the manslaughter charge, I thought there was no way in hell he would walk on that one. I was surprised they convicted him of the other two.

My wife’s recipe for Crow, from one of her other Websites.

One of my coworkers and I were talking about this very legislation today. Since we’re a nationally chartered bank, we can’t offer banking services to cannabis businesses, which is annoying as hell. I’m hoping this passes soon, that pot money is greeeeeeeeen…..

It’s 11:19 Eastern time, 10:19 Central right now and I am seeing absolutely no riots anywhere in the US.

What is happening? I thought the world would be in flames!!

Oh wait. The Black Community wasn’t fucked up the ass.

They Fraternal Order of Police are looking pretty stupid now, aren’t they?

I imagine the National Guard troops are like “Shit, these people are happy! Let’s find a bar and get a Brandy Smash, okay?

Yeah, you betcha, I’m thirsty, right now”

18
Targetpractice  Apr 20, 2021 • 8:37:47pm

So now that the flash of white anger and resentment has passed, they’re trying to regain control over the narrative by pushing the same damned “Just comply with the police!” BS.

Let’s ask Tamir Rice…oh wait, we can’t because he got shot before the cop even had time to order him to drop the toy from his hand.

Or Philando Castile…damn, can’t ask him, the cop shot him dead because his effort to comply got interpreted as going for a weapon and apparently warranted summary execution.

How about Breonna Taylor? Crap, SWAT killed her before she even had time to respond because of a drug bust gone bad.

Anybody else beginning to see a pattern?//////

Remember when Seth McFarlane had Rush Limbaugh guest on Family Guy, because he wanted to reach out and show that conservatives are just like us in the end?

Yeah, fuck that as well.

Nice to display your inferiority complex like that, Scott Greer 6’2” IQ 187.

Former Daily Caller contributor.

Since all conservatives lie unless proven otherwise, and IQ norming becomes difficult beyond three standard deviations (for psychologists, that’s 15 points rather than 16), I would take the 187 as a lie. (I wouldn’t trust the 6’2” either.)

Yeah, his caricature of AOC is another creepy one as well. It’s like, “How the hell can you see what you’re doing with the hood on your head while you draw?”

You could literally teach a class about racism in art exclusively with his cartoons.

IN THEIR WORDS: Midwest law enforcement leaders react to Derek Chauvin trial (Omaha World-Herald)

The police officers and sheriffs interviewed in the article from several states all viewed the trial neutrally and the verdict just (except one who said all involved were inexperienced and there should have been a supervisor on the scene).

Several also note that policing tactics need to change.

Of the Nebraska officers they cited, the closest to me is Scott’s Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman:

“I have no problem with the verdict whatsoever. From the get go, you don’t know everything or hear everything that happened. I can tell you from the moment I saw that video, it made me sick.

“We have something in this country called due process … The officer had due process. I did not watch the trial, bit by bit, but I saw the trial highlights and who the witnesses were and what they had to say. I thought the jury would find him guilty. … I thought the jury had ample evidence to do so and I don’t have any problem that they did so.”

This is what Tucker and the rest of the unruly children don’t get: Chauvin is not being defended by his fellow officers because they see him a scapegoat. They’re throwing his ass to the wolves in the hopes that the verdict will tamp down calls for reforms and reinvestment of police funding into new/expanded agencies. The hope is that the “bad apple” defense will work and they can convince people that they’re every bit as “shocked” and “sickened” by his actions as the public is. If he’d been acquitted today, not a single one of these cops/sheriffs would be saying he needed to go or that the verdict was wrong.

Columbus police released bodycam footage of the shooting of the 15 year old girl. It was definitely no Derek Chauvin sort of situation. He gets there and it is sort of chaos and it looks like she is about to stab another girl. Using deadly force to protect someone else is probably the best excuse he can have.

Wot? Chauvin WAS the supervisor!

Scott County, Iowa, Sheriff Tim Lane

“Training, staffing and public relations is what we need. There’s a lot that is still needed to solve the problems right now in this country.”

“Even though there were multiple officers on scene, most of the officers were completely inexperienced. There was no supervisor on scene to tell the officers specifically what to do when they were doing it. A supervisor on scene directing the officers to reposition Mr. Floyd and to assess his physical condition could have saved his life.”

This goes back, though, to excessive force. She had a knife, and he had a gun. A bullet to the arm or leg if he can’t physically get between the two in time is enough. Even if he’s such a bad shot that he had to hit the chest, why four?

And there it is. “If only we had more money, the problems would go away. Give us more money and we’ll stop killing people.”

That’s all we ever hear. More money for training. More money for staffing. More money for “community outreach.” It’s not that they know they have “bad apples” in their ranks who need to be disciplined/fired, or that they train their rookies to treat every situation like the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. No, it’s that they just need more money, and you’re the one at fault for not giving it to them.

You certainly have a lot more confidence in the ability of someone to carefully hit a limb in the midst of rapidly moving tangle of people.

The general expectation regarding pistol shots, as I understand it, is that you shoot center of mass and continue to shoot until the target is no longer able to carry out whatever they were doing that caused you to shoot. The presumption is that use of the pistol is likely to be fatal. And at best, likely maiming.

Non-lethal arms would be a taser, baton, or beanbag. And even those can kill or maim.

Did you see the screen cap? If he aimed for an arm or leg and missed he could have easily hit the other girl. And you may question the training, but police are trained to fire until the target is stopped.

And if he’d missed shooting her in the chest/torso? And the problem is that they’re trained to think that the only way to stop someone is to shoot until they are dead, which isn’t always true.

re: #46 Belafon

This goes back, though, to excessive force. She had a knife, and he had a gun. A bullet to the arm or leg if he can’t physically get between the two in time is enough. Even if he’s such a bad shot that he had to hit the chest, why four?

There is no such thing as shooting to wound. If you pull a firearm, you are intending to kill. Given the visible knife and the history of tasers not stopping people, the officers reaction is, honestly, appropriate. A potentially lethal threat to a second person equals shoot to stop the armed person.

Still a risk but less. If he shoots once and waits to see if he stopped her the other girl may have taken a knife to the chest. I am not saying this was a good outcome, but I also find it difficult to fault this cop.

My dad told me about this in an Indianapolis Walmart: google.com. A shoplifter, confronted by a security person pulls out a gun and points it at a guard. Another citizen, in the store, pulls out his gun and fires three times at the shoplifter, missing all three times. Where in the heck did the bullets go?

Hopefully into a wall. That is exactly why I hate CCW John Waynes; untrained idiots who put more people at risk than whatever “threat” they’re shooting at. Leave it to the cops who are far from perfect but are also less likely to kill bystanders.

In the Columbus case, the backstop was the car. And fortunately not the other female. I admit to being surprised that the officer shot with the closeness of the two females. But he seems to have threaded that needle quite well.

Officers, as I understand it, are trained to regard knives as just as deadly as guns if the knife wielder attempts to close with their target.

They could have attempted to disarm her
did anyone have a taser
they could have talked to her

we’ve seen Police bring in people who are deemed persons of interest in multiple mass shootings who are heavily armed unscathed.

I’m tired of excuses, they have no fucking latitude for this shit anymore and what is worse, they are completely out of motherfucking touch with what is going on in the country right now. They apparently exist in their own existential real-life game and they treat everyone of us Citizens with no more concern than a figure on a screen.

I have to disagree on this one. There’s not a training course in the world that teaches to shoot someone in the arm or leg. The only possible exception would be specialized sniper training, and a sniper would require a steady rest, time to set up, a spotter, and perfect circumstances to even attempt it. I asked my brother in law, who served as an MP, and his opinion was that, given how close the victim was to the other girl, even a sniper would go for the center mass shot.
The situation is a tragedy since a young girl is dead, but I don’t equate this one with other shootings we’ve seen recently.

ckkatz  Apr 20, 2021 • 10:48:09pm

There was a famous Columbus Ohio case in 1993 you may have heard about.

However, there were a lot of differences from the one today.

In the current one, there were multiple people in close proximity. The knife wielder appears to have been aggressively attempting to close and stab others. Officers had only been on the scene a short time. I suspect that only beat officers (generalists) were present.

And yes, no matter how justified, her death is a tragedy. I suspect that in other situations she may have been a very nice person.

In the 1993 situation, things had been static for hours, allowing time to get professional sharpshooters in place. There were no other people around the gunman. And the gunman held the gun in one position for a long time. Given time, opportunity, and a willingness to use them, there are often a lot of capabilities that can be brought to bear.

feel free, its a free country

was there any attempt at de-escalation?
was there any attempt at communication?
no one had a taser?
no one had a night-stick?
no one had a voice?

it’s ALWAYS shoot and let some divine being sort it out?

You folks are free to pursue whatever imaginary after-report you wish.

to me there are two essential items, the 15 year old girl who is now DEAD, called the police to help her while she was being harassed

she was killed by the very people that she called to protect her

Apparently there was one really tragic mistake committed here, it was that she called the Police.

maybe on a different day, in a different year, I might perhaps be more reasonable about this and less strident and able to accept hard decisions and difficult choices. Maybe the officer did her a favor by not allowing her to be a killer. maybe I am tired of seeing well armed white people armed with semi-automatic rifles and guns being arrested (which is good) with no harm (not that I want there to be any) and yet… here we are….. Maybe I’m simply envisioning a time where a gun isn’t a choice when it comes to keeping the peace.

According to the press conference:

Officers had responded to an attempted stabbing call when police shot the girl at about 4:45 p.m., police said. The 911 caller reported a female was trying to stab them before hanging up, they said.

So either there were multiple calls to 911 or the initial twitter reports were wrong.

re: #67 piratedan

I’m sorry, but the beginning of that post indicates to me you don’t have the first understanding of defense.

The victim was within striking range with a lethal weapon of another person. I’m not sure why there’s an assumption that the knife is less lethal in that circumstance. If the officer tries to de-escalate and the girl lunges, the other girl is at mortal risk. Attempting to close with a night stick or other melee option is the same.

This is not a situation where a mentally ill person has a knife where the officers could back away and let the situation play out.

You are correct that the tragic mistake was her calling police, as in the Greek meaning of tragedy.

The timing is awful given the justice that was just seen earlier today, but holding a knife on another person around the police is not going to end well no matter where or who you are.

If the situation was different and the officer knew for sure the girl with the knife was the one who called, maybe things would have ended differently.

I do agree I wish a gun was not the first choice in a lot of situations, but the duty of police in that situation would be to protect the person at mortal risk.

If further investigation turns up more info, then I’m happy to reassess my thoughts. But tagging this cop as the next Chauvin doesn’t seem to hold up.

The vaccination site near the Greenbelt Maryland Metro stop is offering walk-up vaccines for any adult, “regardless of where they live”.

On Tuesday, Maryland Health Department officials said the mass vaccination site in Greenbelt will offer daily walk-up access for coronavirus inoculations starting this week, though hours and supplies will be limited.

…snip…

Starting Wednesday, walk-up doses will be available for four hours each day or until supplies run out, whichever occurs first. Shots at the federally run site near the Greenbelt Metro station are available to all eligible adults regardless of where they live.

Walk-up access begins two hours after the site opens for appointments, and the schedule varies by day. Walk-up doses will be distributed starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 11 a.m. Fridays through Sundays and 9 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. The site, run by FEMA, can deliver about 3,000 doses per day total. Appointments can be sought through Maryland’s statewide registration portal, onestop.md.gov, or by calling 1 - 8 5 5 - MD-GOVAX.

Supposedly Covid articles, such as this one are not behind the paywall.

Pretty much: that’s how authoritarians think. They’re not concerned about justice, except as a word to beat others with. They want their tribe, via racist cops, to enforce dominance over all the other tribes. And impunity means dominance. So, they’re freaked out that their tribe has been punished for its act, and probably more freaked out that other cops agree with the verdict and are therefore traitors to their tribe.

Regrettably, Richard Dawkins has over the past several years accumulated a history of making statements that use the guise of scientific discourse to demean marginalized groups, an approach antithetical to humanist values. His latest statement implies that the identities of transgender individuals are fraudulent, while also simultaneously attacking Black identity as one that can be assumed when convenient. His subsequent attempts at clarification are inadequate and convey neither sensitivity nor sincerity.

Consequently, the AHA Board has concluded that Richard Dawkins is no longer deserving of being honored by the AHA, and has voted to withdraw, effective immediately, the 1996 Humanist of the Year award.

It’s this thing called the “moral high ground”. People who contract this sometimes deadly disease develop symptoms of an insufferable fragile ego, fits of rage, inability to inhibit speech, and selective memory loss. There is no known cure; researchers are currently focused on curbing the symptoms using exposure to positive media to try to break the impenetrable thought barrier that envelops the victims’ brains. They also say that they don’t feel a breakthrough in treating this disease is likely to happen until the mental conditioning systems that contribute to the development of the disease are broken down and either completely overhauled, or destroyed entirely.

Cities and states might have more money for law enforcement if they weren’t constantly dealing with lawsuits due to “bad apples.”

NYC spends more to settle excessive force complaints against the NYPD than exists budgets for entire cities elsewhere in the US.

$200 million a year each of the past few years.

Cedar Falls, Iowa paid out $8 million to settle excessive force case where black victim was left paralyzed. Cedar Falls police budget is around $45-50 million a year.

Police and localities consider this a cost of doing business and the burdens fall back on the taxpayers, who are often the very persons of color brutalized by the cops that abuse their power on a regular basis.

Get rid of Mr. Smarty-pants!

If you’re not a white conservative, you are expected to calmly manage and de-escalate a swarm of hair-trigger cops with deadly weapons otherwise they’ll shoot you and it’s your fault. If you’re a white conservative, it’s everyone else’s responsibility to wrangle you into taking two goddamn shots like a toddler who refuses to eat his broccoli.

there are 2 reasons to get vaccinated
they are the exact same two reasons to mask, distance, and wash your hands

1 - to protect yourself
2 - to protect others

if you dont want to protect others including your family and friends, protect yourself
if you dont want to protect yourself, i got nothing.

There’s a few assumptions here - namely that the American public knows how bills become law in the US, because it’s clear that one party has completely divorced itself from reality and how things are supposed to work.

This is all about getting a global minimum tax so companies can’t avoid paying tax anywhere in the world (as more than a few are trying to do by setting up in offshore tax havens, when their primary business is in places like US, EU, UK, India, China, S Korea, or Japan).

re: #46 Belafon

There is no such thing as “shooting to wound”. It simply does not exist. Shooting accurately with a pistol is very difficult under ideal situations. Moreso under stress. Deliberately hitting a person in motion in the arm or leg would be a heroic feat for even the most highly skilled marksman, which the typical police officer certainly is not. The idea of aiming for center-mass is that 1) that’s the place you’re most likely to hit successfully, and 2) that’s where most of the vital organs are, damage to which is most likely to swiftly end the situation. The only reason to deploy a firearm against another person is that you intend to kill them. That police feel so comfortable going immediately to lethal intent is a problem we have to somehow fix.

128
lawhawk  Apr 21, 2021 • 6:41:19am

re: #127 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Cops are trained to shoot center mass. They’re trained to keep shooting until the person they’re firing at is neutralized.

There’s no way people can do things like you see in the movie, like firing to disarm someone with a knife or gun. It just doesn’t work like that. The physics makes it virtually impossible.

We’re plateauing in the number of doses administered, despite opening up vaccinations to anyone essentially over 16/18?

Who’s the most likely group not to want to get vaccinated? Trumpists. They’re the ones who insisted herd immunity will save us, except that by not getting vaccinated, they’re preventing that very outcome.

This is what happens when know nothings have completely rotted the minds of the Fox viewers. Peddling woo and junk science nonstop as Fox does on a daily basis is all Fox crowd ever hears, so they refuse to get vaccinated, even though Trump got vaccinated in secret.

Meanwhile, India, which managed to hold the line in their first big wave of cases last year is being completely overwhelmed now with the new more virulent variants, and the cases/death toll are skyrocketing.

India’s cases are going to have global repercussions, and it may undo all the hard work to contain it, especially if a new variant emerges there.

Monday was my D+14 but I went to an outdoor concert last Saturday - smallish crowd, pretty socially distanced, nice breeze…no risk, wore a mask when I wasn’t sipping beer…everyone I was with was >14 days. We had a nice outdoor dinner party with two couples after. Then on Sunday the CDC said if you’re +14 you should reward yourself by hanging out with other vaccinated people and enjoy your shared immunity.

So yeah, go to the movie.

This was not a case of mistaking one’s own pistol for a taser or mistaking a phone/wallet/bag of skittles in the victim’s had for a weapon and making a split-second decision in a potentially life-threatening situation.

From the NYTimes opinion piece on India:

There is anecdotal evidence that the new wave of Covid-19 cases in India is attacking a younger population, including children, and resulting in more rapid disease progression than seen earlier.

There is need for systematic evidence to link the upswing in cases and easier transmissibility and lethality of novel variants. One variant, B. 1.617, that may have originated in India is spreading widely and has been found in other countries.

This is what happened to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

197
lawhawk  Apr 21, 2021 • 8:36:00am

Been toying with the following;

1) most cops never actually draw their firearms in the line of duty.
2) most cops never actually fire their firearms in the line of duty.
3) most cops get inadequate training on firearms.
4) most cops get inadequate training on deescalation of situations.
5) most cops get inadequate training on use of less-lethal means (tasers, etc.)

Given the preceding, it makes sense to reduce the number of cops who carry firearms in the line of duty. Reserve firearms for SWAT/ESU type units to respond to situations. Get cops walking the beat and interacting with the community (they should live in communities where they work would help with the empathy and understanding of the issues/concerns).

This is similar to what several European countries do right now, and the result in far fewer gun deaths at the hands of cops.

It wont stop all excessive force/police brutality/officer-involved shootings, but the reductions would be significant.

To help address training, national standards should be set as a floor for training. States would be free to provide more training (and should), including annual refreshers. Pysch evals should be standard for officers. Online postings suggesting violent responses to various situations should count against cops being allowed to remain on the job. As an aside, the finest cop I ever knew was a detective in Madison in the 70’s. The one time he pulled his revolver, he used it as a cosh and sprung the cylinder in the process making it unusable without repairs. The department issued him an actual blackjack after that and it was the only weapon he ever used in the line of duty.

re: #197 lawhawk

Been toying with the following;

Those other countries don’t have a populace armed with approximately 300 million guns. Unless that is addressed I can’t see sending police out unarmed or poorly armed.

When I was a kid, the LAPD’s uniforms had a place on them for a blackjack. I only remember seeing a couple cops actually carrying one.

Meanwhile, looks like an Indonesian Navy sub has gone missing:

A number of officers here in Minnesota carry nightsticks. My brother-in-law had one, and I know the officers in the local PD that have stopped by my house during the last year’s tumult had them.

Could be bad news on the missing submarine, unfortunately:

Indonesian rescuers searching for a submarine that went missing with 53 people on board found an oil spill on Wednesday near where the vessel dived, authorities said.

The 44-year-old submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali but failed to relay the results as expected, a navy spokesman said.

An aerial search found an oil spill near the submarine’s dive location and two navy vessels with sonar capability have been deployed to assist in the search, the Defense Ministry said.

The missing boat is KRI Nanggala,a Type 209/1300. It is a near sister of the San Juan (Type 209-1100) and is nearly as old (commissioned 6 July 1981).

re: #198 Dangerman

today mrsdm and i celebrate our first day of full vaccine ‘immunity’

in the beginning we were all in the same mask, distance, wash boat.

waiting for a vaccine

yes some would possibly turn out to be allergic or in some other way contraindicated (depending on ingredients, etc)

and maybe herd immunity would have protected them.
if vaccination hadn’t turned into whatever it is - us vs them, rational vs irrational - whatever.

so there will be two groups of not vaccinated.
those who can’t and those who won’t.

some of the ‘won’ts’ will get covid. some of them will survive and some ‘won’t’.
some will become long haulers.
some may never get it and go ‘ha ha ha’ forever.
possibly, some of them may have no problem with masking etc, and just don’t want a vaccine.

it’s different for the ‘can’ts’

they will unfortunately have to continue the basic protocols to protect themselves.
masking, distance, washing.
And be careful.
Those dynamics wont end for them and it is unfortunate.
But it’s not necessarily dire.

i’m thinking about this because today as i said above my vaccination is now at ‘full strength’.

and i’m still masking, distancing and washing for the foreseeable future.
at some point that might change for me. i can ‘relax’ a bit more.
not so much for the ‘can’ts’.

protect you and your own.
there is no other way.

we’d like there to be another way.

there isn’t because this is where we are.
you deal with how things are, rather than how we thought they were gonna be or could otherwise be if only…

they aren’t

The StB was the Czechoslovak Communist-era secret police, a local version of the KGB (they often worked together). And one of my students pointed out that his agent status was almost certainly passed along to the KGB in Moscow.

You’re sort of unreasonable. Yes, that could happen (and that is how we get “WTF it’s raining fish”), but it’d have to actually hit you first - and unlike a tornado on land, a waterspout is a bit easier to spot and avoid. They’re usually not large, also, which means that you would have to be extremely unfortunate for its path to actually intersect with yours.

This goes back, though, to excessive force. She had a knife, and he had a gun. A bullet to the arm or leg if he can’t physically get between the two in time is enough. Even if he’s such a bad shot that he had to hit the chest, why four?

OK, again: shooting at arms & legs is a real no-no. Despite what you see in movies, arms and legs move FAST.

Miss, and the bullet just keeps going. Maybe hits a toddler in the background, maybe goes through a window & kills mom holding baby.

Aim for center mass.

Once you’ve made the decision to use deadly force, you use it. You don’t empty the whole clip into someone. But you do put multiple rounds into them to stop them from presenting a clear danger to yourself & others.

He’s unpopular in New Jersey. A known loud/brash/asshole/bully - but without Trump’s following or adoring base. There is lots of footage of him as a suckup to Trump including the “deer in headlights” moment.

No one trusts him. No one would trust him.
