Russia waving a limp dick around and they know it. Go ahead, expel a few US diplomats. We’ll freeze your oligarch’s funds and seize their American holdings. We know Putin answers to them at some point.

So, a few days ago, Czech Republic expelled 18 Russians from the Russian Embassy in Prague, on the grounds that they were strongly believed to be working for the SVR and the GRU. In retaliation, the Russians expelled 20 Czechs from the Czech Embassy in Moscow - which was almost the entire staff.

The new Czech Foreign Minister (sworn in only hours ago) just threw down the fucking gauntlet to Putin…either restore the 20 Czechs back to the embassy in Moscow, or Czech Republic will expel everyone from the Russian Embassy until the numbers of current embassy staff are respectively equal (IOW, five people).

Moscow has 24 hours to comply.

No, actually, as usual, he’s misrepresenting the facts. The jury did NOT convict based on public pressure; if there was any evidence of this, a motion for mistrial would be swiftly dispatched to the court. The conviction was secured because there was a massive amount of evidence that piled up against Chauvin, including his own superiors testifying that he did not act in accordance with MPD practices for the use of force. The public pressure campaign only ensured that the case went to trial in the first place.

Just because the overwhelming public opinion agreed with the verdict doesn’t mean it influenced the verdict, or that the verdict was wrong. Public opinion favored guilt because we saw the video, just like the jury did.

And I really should have pointed out that that’s the truth he accidentally stumbled upon. If it had not been for a brave woman coming forward with video of the incident, convincing others to either show their own recorded videos or give their own eyewitness accounts, then there would have been no public outcry and Chauvin’s superiors would have quietly swept all this under the rug as “Black man dies of heart attack in police custody.”

What made this conviction possible was the public becoming outraged because of the evidence that was right in front of their faces and demanding that those responsible be held accountable. And it is that truth that Ben and other wingnuts see as an aberration from a system where white cops can act as fascist thugs without accountability.

Yep, that’s all true and accurate. And we know for a fact that the MPD really REALLY wanted to sweep this under the rug, as during the lead-up to the charges being filed, it came out that Chauvin had 22 reports that were not actioned in his 19 years on the force. Guy was a complete fucking asshole, but they planned on keeping him on the force all the way up until some poor teenage girl who really didn’t want to be a hero pulled out her cell phone and started recording.

We have a dog who’s a favorite of all the grandkids and very friendly. Unless you’re a dog, in which case he wants to fight.

Havoc (named appropriately) once tried to tear through a chain link fence to get at a dog next door. That dog happened to be the Marine corps mascot (neighbors daughter is a Marine who was caring for it and was visiting). Biggest, most muscular bulldog I’ve ever seen. He totally ignored Havoc, which really pissed off Havoc (who weighs about 16 pounds).

Anyway, Havoc’s tag says “I have issues”.

Wonderful little dog but totally nuts.

Here he is with Lacy, the floofy dog.

This kind of point by point refutation of Republican garbage is important.

But an alternative and much simpler argument is equally valid: “The GA voting law was enacted by GA Republicans as a result of their losses in 2020, an election in which no voter fraud was found. Therefore, this law is just another case of GOP voter suppression.”

One reform that should be considered in view of all of this is truly independent review of police body camera video in all use of force incidents. Body cam video under control of the police system is very easy to suppress.

And they do it all the time, how many times have we heard that the body cams were switched off or malfunctioning in the last 4-5 years of police incidents? I’m starting to think that, if we can’t do it that way, at the least implement a mandatory minimum punishment (maybe not jail time, but X months unpaid leave plus a demotion, or something) for an officer-involved shooting or other questionable use of force where body cam footage is unavailable, compounded if the body cam in question is tested and found to be working after the incident.

I wonder if this had something to do with the CIA’s rejection of young Tucker’s application when he graduated from college in 1991? Tucker was otherwise eminently qualified. He had already demonstrated real journalistic talent, something he continued to show until the early 2000s when he went full goober-grift, and his father (the pioneering gonzo journalist Dick Carlson) had just finished a stint as director of the Voice of America and had been appointed Ambassador to the Seychelles.

To clarify, blatant homophobia would not have been a disqualifier at CIA in 1991, though the winds of change were already stirring, especially in intelligence work. A casual attitude toward political violence would be, though. They take their assassinations seriously.

I’m a late Gen Xer, from the early days of the latch key kids. It seems to me that a lot of Gen X didn’t get parented well since our parents were working so much in the 80s and 90s. This means, among other things, that we never learned how to parent well ourselves.

Early Millenial here and I was definitely a latchkey kid. Both of my folks were active military until I was in high school, which meant when I wasn’t staying with a babysitter I was by myself at home. Even when my sister and I stayed with our grandmother in the summer months we were latchkey kids during the week because she was still working at a furniture store while we grew up.

So it doesn’t surprise me in the least that my generation have a hard time dealing with parenting, especially when so many of us lost our jobs, our savings, and months/years of potential earnings during the Great Recession. It’s hard as fuck to be a parent when you don’t even have the money to move out of your own parent’s house.

This is exactly why I thought the verdict was guilty as soon as they came back after only 10.5 hours of deliberation. That jury was very diverse, one of the finest that they could’ve put together from the State of Minnesota. There was no way in hell that any of the Black or Hispanic people on that jury would’ve voted to acquit based on the weak theories put forward by the defense. The only remaining option was that they had either hung, or voted guilty - but a hung jury usually asks lots of questions, asks for read-backs, it takes a pretty long time for them to decide they’re hung.

Congrats on getting the vaccine!

Hopefully you are now calibrated. ///

Are you of House Pfizer or House Moderna?

The front went through the western ‘burbs of DC around 11:30. At 11:00 the temperature was 63degF . At 12:30 it was 54degF. As of 3pm still getting heavy gusts of wind and the Dulles Airport planes are in their storm pattern. (Low and directly over my house.)

But the sun is out and we did not get more than a few drops of rain. I guess that I will need to mow the lawn soon.

House Moderna. We’re getting some occasional gusts now, but there was wild weather to west with reports of hail. Some folks in our neighborhood are reporting power outages, so there’s that.

you all know my position on gun accountability:
control your weapon at all times
you and only you are responsible for your weapon.

Draconian enforcement for **demonstrated** irresponsibility.
- your freedom (jail)
- your finances (criminal fines, civil suit exposure)
- your future (loss of 2A forever)
After a few cases the lazy and merely careless will clean up their act - they will learn to take their personal responsibility more seriously - or else.

i have seriously considered that every civil or criminal jury should be all gun owners only

i think it could work

It’s not about guilt or innocence, it’s about white dominance and petty tribal warfare. Even those wingnuts who’ve admitted that the evidence was sufficient to warrant Chauvin’s conviction have whined that it was “wrong” because it was “mob justice.” They wanted him to walk free not because they genuinely believed he was innocent, but because they could then get off on “librul tears” and images of cops beating and tear-gassing protestors.

Better still: Dan White was the originator of the “twinkie defense”. In short, he argued that he had been eating too many Twinkies at the time of the murders, and that was obviously a symptom of mental illness and diminished cognitive capacity, and therefore he was not guilty, ladies and gentlemen of the jury (which they bought).

I’m oversimplifying, but not by much.

For way too many on the US right, arbitrary murder of black people by cops is an essential part of their disgusting world view. I’m sure they regard it as a poor substitute for the pleasures of a real lynch mob, but they will still defend it at all costs.

Sorry to hear about the power outages. I am very fortunate that the lines inside my neighborhood are buried. Not that falling trees don’t target the above ground feeder lines going into my neighborhood.

As I am sure you are quite aware, the whole concept of “House of” is such a humorous reminder of how much this division of people into “Them” and “Us” is ingrained into human nature.

I wonder if two major parties is too small a number and whether we need to go with a much larger number of parties. Of course, the current Israeli experience is a counter-example.

There’s virtually no circumstances under which wingnuts would agree that a cop deserved to be convicted. Why? Because cop unions have spent years turning the subject of police reform into a political fight where agreeing that there need to be reforms means you are “anti-cop/pro-crime.” So they always have to hedge any approval of a cop being convicted with blathering about “Just comply with the cop” or “He was no angel.”

Time and again, persons of color are stopped in a disproportionate fashion, and no contraband, weapons, or other infractions found. Yet, they’re killed at a higher rate than whites while whites have more guns, contraband, or other infractions.

To clarify, blatant homophobia would not have been a disqualifier at CIA in 1991, though the winds of change were already stirring, especially in intelligence work. A casual attitude toward political violence would be, though. They take their assassinations seriously.

They do psych profiles as part of the employment process. My father passed his (he made more as a University janitor with a fair bit of seniority than he was offered as an entry level map maker with his BS in Cartography) and I’ll bet Mr Tucker failed his.

I think we need a balance, because I definitely don’t want to be in the same position as Israel. However, the primary goal that I’d love to see accomplished in my lifetime, over and above the end of the two-party system, is to get true democratic representation. If I recall correctly, the clubs existed and were significant political and social forces even back in Roman days. So your timeline seems valid to me.

Even the Ancient Greeks had the issue of people dividing into interest groups and facing off in the streets. One example was in Athens the government divided the citizenry into 10 tribes (phylai) randomly across all geographic areas. (Kleisthenes’ reforms circa 508 BC) I do not think that it ended the strife though.

I guess that people dividing into interest and membership groups and battling it out on the streets is not a new thing. And unfortunately, there still seems to be a lot of bloodshed involved, despite humans supposed progress over the intervening millennia.

PBS is running a multi-part documentary about Larry Krasner, Philadelphia’s new (2018) progressive DA. He’s got HUGE battles with the police department. Part of the problem is that the union membership, voting members who chose union leadership, is about half retired cops. People from the Rizzo era.

In the first 2 eps, Krasner and his staff discovered that a bunch of the old guard in the DA’s office, people who are way too cozy with the cops, wiped their hard drives in the weeks between his election and swearing in. They found hidden paper files, buried in boxes nobody thought they’d go through, with a list of hundreds of cops on the do-not-call list, people who couldn’t testify because they had documented history of lying on reports, perjuring themselves on the stand, tampering with evidence, etc.

(he fired almost half the DA office in his first week; for good reasons he and his team chose not to detail to the press).

Among his first initiatives were to eliminate cash bail for non-violent misdemeanors, not file cases for marijuana possession or prostitution, and narrowing the criteria under which juvenile offenders are put into care.

I’m so fucking excited to see the next episode.

re: #120 A Three Hour Tour

Why does the Dangerman Doctrine seek to disqualify intelligent people like me, my wife, and adult children with good reasons not to own guns from serving on criminal and criminal juries?

it doesn’t. i’d have no problem with a defendant opting out of only gun owners, but why would they?

and not all juries - just those involving the demonstrative misuse of a weapon.
i dont mean like armed robbery.

forget the hardware, focus on the behavior.
“control your weapon at all times” is the rule.
it’s your gun.
- who but you, the legal owner, could possibly be responsible for your safely carrying, transporting, storing, brandishing, discharging, transferring (loaning, gifting, selling).

my overall goal is to reduce the number of gun deaths, injuries and incidents by culling out only the nutters, careless, and reckless, while leaving the rest of us alone.

my thinking is to cede all pro gun arguments - no matter what convoluted idea these people come up with.
Work with “all rights come with responsibilities”.
It’s something very hard to argue against.

same with juries.
there are more responsible gun owners than careless ones, so i think juries would still be fairly represented.

thanks to the NRA, right now the nutters are the public face of all gun owners.
I think the quietly responsible ones arent thrilled with this.

i have faith that not enough gun owners would want to reach a public verdict that whatever obviously idiotic thing this person did is somehow ok….

and after the verdict, it would be almost impossible to argue against 12 gun owners concluding this individual should lose his freedom, finances and future 2A rights.

of course it’s all just dumb theory

re: #139 Dangerman

it doesn’t. i’d have no problem with a defendant opting out of only gun owners, but why would they?

and not all juries - just those involving the demonstrative misuse of a weapon.
i dont mean like armed robbery.

forget the hardware, focus on the behavior.

That doesn’t answer the question about why you’d even consider a plan where only gun owners may serve on certain juries. And you state that defendants could opt out of that requirement “but why would they”? That seems like a rather biased statement in favor of gun owners. I at least would appreciate more insight into your thinking as to why gun owners would be better jurors than citizens who choose not to own firearms.

I have a quality CEO. This is an older, well-off, white man.

Dear all,

On June 1, I sent a message to you in the wake of George Floyd’s death. In that note, I said that horrible murder was part of a history of racist violence against Black and brown people in our nation and that we all had a responsibility to contribute to the fight for equal treatment and against racism.

Yesterday’s murder verdict means that Derek Chauvin is being held accountable and that is an important step. However, we all know and we have all seen that racism continues to pervade our society. We have so much more work to do.

We have our own work to do to deepen and intensify our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Fund. I will refer to this at next week’s all employee meeting. In the meantime, as each of us responds in our own way to the events of this week, including the verdict and still more current news of police violence against people of color, I encourage you to engage with and support each other.

This is a moment for all of us to demonstrate that we are part of a community that cares not only about one other, but also about eliminating racism and injustice in our society.

Thank you and stay safe,
Matthew

Upding for truth. Arizona has few to no penalties. A co worker’s son took grandpa’s glock to school and killed himself with it. They handed the gun back the next day along with thoughts and prayers for an “unspeakable and unavoidable tragedy”. If gramps had his shit together a teenager would still be alive.

re: #127 ckkatz

The fundamental divide in Ancient Greece (and elsewhere) was between the wealthier few (who thought they should be the rulers) and everyone else. Kleisthenes’ reforms actually gave a boost to the “haves,” but it also broke up some other groups that had been a problem.

Well, when they got to America, they had to kill indigenous people first in order to steal their land to have wealth to protect. Checkmate!

Actually they didn’t. We all seem to forget that first contact, a century before the English started colonizing, killed off the vast majority of the population (we obviously can’t produce good numbers), so those 17th century arrivals found the surviving remnants, but they also found vast swathes of empty land, and had no idea that it had ever been inhabited.

Not exactly. The colonizers moved into the coastal villages emptied out by plague, they knew people had died en masse and celebrated that God had killed the natives for them—they also raided their grave goods—starting a pattern of fucking over and killing the post-apocalytpic survivors whose territory they had occupied. What they “didn’t know” about was how much more sophisticated the tribes further into the continent were prior to the pandemic…but they didn’t change their fundamental position that the land was theirs by divine right and the natives had no right to resist.

The nicest possible reading is that these people were just fine with mass death because they viewed themselves as having a divine right, and then they followed through on that divine right by engaging in as much ethnic cleansing as possible. Which is slightly better than “did it deliberately”…but then some dudes actually did take a shot at deliberately using disease against the natives precisely because they thought it would be effective.

Interesting case today in Fairfax County, Virginia.

As you already know, traffic stops can provide the law officer with probable cause for crimes. This allows him to search the car for evidence of other crimes.

Use of a traffic stop for that purpose is referred to as a “pretextual stop”. And selecting black drivers for pretextual traffic stops is informally referred to as “Driving While Black”.

In April, 2018 a black DC firefighter was stopped in Fairfax County, Virginia for driving over a center line, taking too long to pull over, and having tinted windows. During the stop the officer searched the car and found two handguns and hundreds of Oxycontin tablets. In July, 2019 the firefighter, faced with up to 10 years in prison, agreed to a plea bargain and was sentenced to 3 years in prison.

In September, 2019, the officer was suspected of lying on some of his 400 traffic stops and an investigation started. In May, 2020 the officer resigned from the Fairfax County Police in return for no internal investigation files being placed in his personnel folder. He moved to Brevard County where in August, 2020 he was hired by the Sheriff’s Office. As investigation was not completed, the Sheriff’s Office had not been informed of it.

Also in 2020, the firefighter’s attorney heard about the investigation and requested the video from the stop. The new Fairfax County DA decided to provide it to the attorney even though he did not legally have to do so.

The attorney reviewed the tapes and found out that the firefighter had not driven across a center line, had pulled over promptly and did not have tinted windows. This eliminated the pretext for searching the car.

The Fairfax DA is moving to void all of the officer’s convictions and moved to free the firefighter from jail. The judge ruled today to free the firefighter. The Brevard Sheriff’s Office has fired the former officer. But no charges have been filed against the former officer.

D.C. firefighter to be freed from prison after conviction based on Fairfax County officer’s false claims is thrown out

That doesn’t answer the question about why you’d even consider a plan where only gun owners may serve on certain juries. And you state that defendants could opt out of that requirement “but why would they”? That seems like a rather biased statement in favor of gun owners. I at least would appreciate more insight into your thinking as to why gun owners would be better jurors than citizens who choose not to own firearms.

i definitely do not think ‘better’.

there is no incrementalizing this with assault rifle bans, stiffer background checks, waiting periods, and on and on.
the r’s are against *everything* and anything.
and we still sort of treat them as honest brokers on the other side of a legitimate argument. they are not but we cant seem to break that image of them.

so i drop 100% of the ‘gun control’ stuff and focus instead on demonstrable, inarguable bad behavior.

politically in my head i’ve tried to take away any possible opposition to it - the usual suspects and the bizarre.

i concede all the 2A ‘interpretation’s, *national* databases, bans, buy backs, mandatory registrations, insurance etc. they are all non starters against this group because they will not budge.

instead i focus on:
- every right comes with some responsibility - let em try arguing gun ownership doesnt.
- you, the gun owner, has total responsibility for controlling your weapon - let em try arguing someone else does and not you.

— i added only gun owner juries as another incentive to make this idealistic package in my head more palatable - let em try arguing such a jury would be biased against the defendants.

in my little world there are only two bad long term outcomes
the right never agrees that gun owners have any responsibility so this never gets off the ground.
or
it somehow manages to pass and the all gun owner juries don’t work and it goes amok.

either way they have delegitimized themselves past redemption (imo)
would we then be better off with them having said the quiet part out loud? i think so.

otoh - maybe, just maybe the 95+% of responsible gun owners actually do manage to ID and cull out some of the reckless, careless, crazies

maybe some gun dealers come to realize the minuscule incremental profit on sales to nutters isn’t worth the exposure

ok, i also want a pony

This is a rational proposal for dealing with the US cult of the gun, although I don’t agree with the juries part. I’m a big fan of eliminating the idea of “accidental discharge” of a firearm from the law. Every gunshot has a responsible party, and that responsible party should be held responsible for all civil and criminal consequences of that gunshot.

But rational responses to the US cult of the gun aren’t going to get the job done, since gun nuts and the rest of the US right are completely irrational, and way too many in the mushy middle persist in pretending the right isn’t completely irrational.

When I talk about a negligent discharge it isn’t an excuse, it’s a crime. It’s the term I’d use for any round fired unintentionally, and I’m good with all of them being some level of crime. The worse the harm, the worse the crime, up to some level of homicide.

i came back to look up a recipe.

in my world:

the legal gun *owner* is responsible for anything and everything associated with a weapon.
they have total authority and control over how it’s used, misused, stored, transported, transferred etc.

who else but the legal owner?

it is possible for someone else to *also* be responsible.
say if you loan it to someone.
you *still* remain primarily liable for the judgment and circumstances of the loan.
it’s your gun.
the other person is also liable for what happened while it was in their possession.
dont lend your gun to anyone who isnt as responsible as you.

a child is never responsible. in my world a child cannot be a gun owner:
- they cannot possibly assume total personal responsibility for anything and everything. they can’t even fully understand what it means. they cannot control their weapon at all times

Lots of articles about the future of Stone Mountain being “in doubt.” Baloney! It has no place in the modern world except as an example of racist propaganda. Instead of jackhammering the image of Lee, Jackson, and Davis off the rock, though, I think we should add the Gates of Hell to the left so the 3 traitors appear to be riding into them. If enough money could be raised we could add Lincoln, Sherman, and Grant pursuing them on the other side.

I’m using it as a broader term. I agree with your example. I’m expanding it to include the jackass who fails to clear his weapon before cleaning it and lodges a 9mm slug in his ceiling. That’s not murder, and one is freely allowed to damage one’s own property, so what do we call that? It’s a negligent discharge, and cause for revocation of your firearm rights.

Perhaps for something like that suspension pending retraining? Treat incidents like that as being more akin to a moving violation that accrues points against your drivers license with training being able to remove the points as Wisconsin does with drivers?

Point taken. Make a new crime out of any negligent discharge that isn’t presently criminalized.

re: #194 DesertDenizen

When I talk about a negligent discharge it isn’t an excuse, it’s a crime. It’s the term I’d use for any round fired unintentionally, and I’m good with all of them being some level of crime. The worse the harm, the worse the crime, up to some level of homicide.

* potential harm

unless you are pulling and pointing your weapon in response to an actual imminent threat to your life, you are brandishing and that’s threatening.

in my world brandishing even without discharging is a heinous act
that you didnt shoot, and that no one got hurt, is irrelevant.
you used it as a threat and therefore lost control of your weapon
the danger was imminent to everyone in the vicinity.

the rule is clear:
control your weapon at all times or risk draconian enforcement.
lose your freedom, finance and future (that means 2A rights)

I can get behind that. No harm to life merits a suspension, not a lifetime ban. But retraining is required.

I agree. I’m also concerned about the idiots that aren’t even brandishing, like my example of a discharge during cleaning, or an inappropriate one at the range.

Kemp appointed him, so I already have trust issues. I don’t know anything about Rev. Mosley, so I will reserve judgment and say it’s time for change. Hopefully this is the beginning of progress.

The Klan still gathers at Stone Mountain. There just aren’t huge rallies up there anymore, they’re more on the down low about it. When I first moved down here, back in the mid 80s, I rode a bike almost everywhere and one morning I saw full Klan regailia on a half a dozen guys headed to the parking lot of a city park I rode by daily. The town I live in features a huge old building full of Civil War and assorted racist memorabilia. With a sign on the front door that says White History Year. In 2021. Smack in the middle of a downtown rejuvenation with restaurants, shops, a railroad museum, and lots of other little locally owned places that aren’t peddling racist souvenirs. And no one really bats an eyelash. Georgia has a lot of growing up to do.

You do not change and improve behavior this way any more than you would by taking away someone’s drivers license for doing a rolling stop at a stop sign that did not cause an accident. DUI? Sure. Minor infraction? No.

Your argument doesn’t quite match. This would be the equivalent of rolling your car though your fence. If you stop in your yard its probably ok. But if you stop in your neighbor’s yard on top of their kids, that’s a totally different thing.

The question is though, is discharging a round unintentionally a minor infraction? Does it depend on where it is and the power of the round? A 9mm round in an apartment building is much more dangerous than a .22 in a rural home on several acres.

BTW, 20 minutes is plenty at the end of the day. I like to go about a half hour to 45 minutes. Did an hour ride the other day and it felt longer than I needed. But the 20 minute rides are good because you can squeeze one in between meetings and not necessarily need to shower. Throw in a 5 min warm up/cool down and it becomes 30. Math. Huh.

People are just getting sloppy. Careless. Even lazier mask-techniques. My local grocery store is not as dedicated to cleaning their carts (and they don’t stock the hand-wipes at the door as they had prior 12 months. Then again, I see many people just not using them anymore… sigh.)

One of my friends told me last night that he has made a point of leaving a few discreet footprints on Dan White’s grave in Golden Gate National Cemetery. (His grandfather and Rep. Leo J. Ryan are also buried there and that’s why he visits.) Mayor Moscone is buried in the cemetery in Colma, just south of San Francisco, which he also visits from time to time.

The longer this goes on the more we learn.

The CDC guidance on fomites is that transmission through surfaces is rare. The grocery store would be better served installing or upgrading air filtration than all the cart cleaning.

One reform that should be considered in view of all of this is truly independent review of police body camera video in all use of force incidents. Body cam video under control of the police system is very easy to suppress.

Another reform that should be considered is to look at who is routinely reported to the Department as a bad cop. It’s not unusual for 5% of LEOs to account for 50% of complaints in a municipality.

And those costs cost a community a shot-pot of money.

Three strikes and you are out.
