Most students in America are only taught about a handful of important Black Americans in history class. Here’s a look at why schools should teach students about race and why certain parents are opposed to that shift. #DailyShow #TrevorNoah #School

re: #304 No Malarkey!

Liz Cheney will probably lose her seat to a fascist who will eagerly support Trump’s effort to seize power in 2025. An article in vox.com suggests that anti-fascist Republicans might want to bite their tongues for now so that they will be in a position to oppose Trump’s coup attempt in the next election.

They’re already on it.

Bouchard announces primary bid against Cheney in 2022 (Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune, March 4, more at the link):

Wyoming state Sen. Anthony Bouchard has announced he will be running against Rep. Liz Cheney in the 2022 Republican primary.

In a news release announcing his campaign last week, the hard-line conservative state senator said he was running to oust Cheney for her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in inciting a riot Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol.

“Wyoming was President Trump’s best state both times he ran,” Bouchard said in a statement announcing his campaign. “That’s because Wyoming voters are strong conservatives who want our leaders to stand up for America, defend our freedoms, fight for our way of life and always put working people first as President Trump did.”

“Liz Cheney’s long-time opposition to President Trump and her most recent vote for impeachment shows just how out of touch she is with Wyoming,” he added. “Wyoming taxpayers need a voice in Congress who will stand up to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, and not give them cover. That’s why I’m running for Congress.”

Bouchard’s announcement is not just bluster: As of Jan. 20, he had an official website soliciting donations for his campaign and had formally filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission.

I got CL’d. Just posted below that Liz Cheney will probably lose her seat to a fascist who will eagerly support Trump’s effort to seize power in 2025. State gets 75%? Reminds me of some of the more enlightened and generous slave owners who rented out their slaves and allowed the slaves to keep part of the resulting income. This happened occasionally among those who owned skilled workers, like the masons who built the White House. I don’t think any of them let the slaves keep 3/5 though, which was their Constitutional value.

Reminder of a couple of things. In GA, and most of the south, the Athletes that would be good enough to make endorsement money will be 95% black.

When it comes to paying college athletes in general, your feelings about black people will correlate with your feelings about paying players.

I happened to be in Texas when I was in the 7th grade, ca. 1961. This is the level at which Texas History was, and still is, a required course. Our Texas History teacher, a Miss Jones, was a true believer. She actually shed tears when she talked about the Alamo. She also believed in the contented slave myth and cited Stephen Collins Foster as a source. When it came to the Civil War, she referred to Confederate soldiers as “our boys” when she waxed eloquent on their heroic resistance to the invading Yankees. She pictured the latter as a gang of hairy ruffians recently imported from the swamps and caves of Europe.
There was one oddity in her generalized worship of the heroes of the Texas Revolution: She was strangely ambivalent about Sam Houston, who was arguably the most important, and certainly the most competent, of them all. Years later, it dawned on me that this was probably because Houston had later been deposed as Governor for denouncing, and refusing to sign, the Ordinance of Secession or support the Confederacy in any way.

It might be useful at this advanced date to remind younger Lizards that this site, and our esteemed host, played a pivotal role in exposing the Bush Guard docs. I have never entertained any notion that he, or we, should be embarrassed by this now, though it probably did help W get re-elected. The docs were an obvious fraud, pure and simple. It’s the kind of thing that is best left to Republicans since it suits their skillset and their audience much better than it does ours.
I do not believe for an instant that Dan Rather was complicit in the fraud though. Poor Dan was taken in, mostly because he still had an inadequate understanding of the internet and technology in general.

Del Valle was a real, historical fascist and an ardent admirer of Benito Mussolini. He was assigned to the US Naval Attache’s office in Rome when Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in 1935. He got himself attached to the Italian army as an observer and wrote a glowing account of the invasion and subsequent campaign, Roman Eagles Over Ethiopia. He joined far right causes even before World War II, and while still a serving officer of the Marine Corps.

I’ve always the Turd Blossom was behind the whole thing. A pre-emptive release of a fake document to get ride of a story that was, in fact, true?

That’s some Texas Politickin’!

We don’t like her. However, an actually sane right wing will actually contribute ideas to the debate — either good ideas that can be used, or bad ideas that in trying to explain why they’re bad can lead to good ideas. That won’t come from neo-Confederates, or people talking about Jewish Space Lasers or Cannibal Pedophile Conspiracies.

And critically, they won’t try to violently overthrow the US government.

Not much of a choice really. Park management sent out a memo to all tenants to either get your yards in order or WE WILL. Don’t really like the idea of paying someone to do something I can do. That and I only took 5 heads off and I knew more or less where they were at. Someone not familiar with the yard probably would have taken them all off.

If he’s going for an insanity defense, there’s no set length length of confinement.

If sentenced and he serves his time, it’s still up to the institution’s psychiatrists to decide when he gets to leave.

Yep, Cheney is toast. The fascists are going to make every effort to purge elected officials who would oppose Trump’s coup after the 2024 election. Dog help us.

There’s been talk of a Republican civil war since I was in high school… I did not except “fascist” to be one of the sides in that civil war. I figured it’d be social conservatives vs business conservatives with foreign policy hawks hoping which ever side won would let them continue bombing people.

But the social conservatives have apparently turned into white supremacists (or maybe they always were and the mask finally slipped) and have bought in on the Trump Train.

I’m not a big fan of our de facto two party system, and while I would really enjoy seeing a multi-party system develop in the US, I know there are too many structural obstacles to a multi-party system (435 in the House, electoral college, state legislatures that are way too small - in California we have 80 in the Assembly and 40 in the Senate).

It’s weird, being VP is really a mostly worthless political job - your electoral future is tied entirely to someone else’s job performance, you rarely get space to do anything publicly productive - but having the job is one of the surest ways to get the presidential nomination of your party.

Even if you don’t count Truman, LBJ, and Ford (all former Veeps who took office after death/resignation), you have:

Nixon in 1960 (and again in 1968, 1972)
Humphrey in 1968
Mondale in 1984
GHW Bush in 1988 (and again in 1992)
Al Gore in 2000
Joe Biden in 2020

I suspect Harris will be the Dem nominee in either 2024 or 2028. I suspect Pence will try to run in one of those two elections as well (and a Harris vs Pence general would be… something).

And I looked up the town, found that it’s fairly remote (no train, just bus service) but there’s a Jomon archaeological site nearby with a museum. Further looking found a book in English about the Mawaki site, which I downloaded. Except for the “really, you need a car here” part (and I suspect there’s probably a taxi service) it would be a completely geeky place for someone like me.

But my Japanese needs to get better so I can read the exhibit tags, which in this fairly remote place are likely not in English.

tl;dr, forget the squid, there’s a Jomon site with a museum! *geeks out*

I’ve never been there, but I used primary documents from the region in Japan (Noto Peninsula) that spent money on a giant squid statue in my dissertation (I have visited similar areas slightly south on the coast in Fukui, and the same goes there). There was an earthquake five or six years ago and reports revealed that the population is sparse and heavily weighted toward those in the 70-90 yo age range. It’s a dying zone. The money should have been spent more wisely, but for the first time since the earthquake people are paying attention to them.
