So, I guess things aren’t nutty enough in the South Carolina Republican party—now Lin Wood and Will Folks are going at it. (brings back thoughts of Todd Kincannon—remember him?)

Famed First Amendment attorney Lin Wood blasted me and my news outlet on Telegram this week, questioning a recent characterization of his surprisingly viable campaign for chairman of the South Carolina Republican party (SCGOP) as a “circus.”

“Will Folks, the ‘objective journalist’ who authored the above article for FITSNews falsely describes my campaign for chair of the SCGOP as a ‘circus,’” Wood wrote on his Telegram page…

Let me be clear on something: When GOP delegates cast their votes later this month, I hope Lin Wood wins.

I do not believe he is going to win … but I sincerely hope he does.

Why? Because the installation of someone like him at the helm of the SCGOP would generate more web traffic than I know what to do with. Seriously … I could put in a swimming pool based on those page views.

fitsnews.com

Just a refresher about Folks:

FitsNews is a “conservative” site that hates almost all SC legislators, but Dems more than most. But they do have the contacts with everyone in the legislature—you just need to be aware of how their “tone” is applied.

The guy who runs it, Will Folks, was the one who came out about an affair with Nikki Haley, complete with text messages, when she was running for governor. But then he endorsed her. He’s kinda nuts. ballotpedia.org

A Malian woman has given birth to nine babies at once — after expecting seven, according to Mali’s Minister of Health and the Moroccan clinic where the nonuplets were born.

It appeared to be the first time on record that a woman had given birth to nine surviving babies at once.

The five girls and four boys, and their mother, “are all doing well,” Mali’s health minister said in a statement.

The mother, 25-year-old Halima Cisse, gave birth to the babies by cesarean section on Tuesday in Morocco after being sent there for special care, Mali’s top health official announced.

Alaoui, the clinic director, told The AP that as far as he was aware Cisse had not used fertility treatments. The Malian health ministry did not provide any other information about the pregnancy or births.

I agree 100% with you. She received some form of fertility treatment.

As far as I know, the Dionne quintuplets, born in 1934, were the largest number in a single birth without fertility assistance. In that case, they were identical, so from a single egg.

And I remember it in the Seventies.

And no, Nero did not thrown Christians to the lions for being Christians. (Damnatio ad Beastias was a death penalty imposed by Nero’s regime, and he blamed Christians for the Great Fire in Rome, but they were thrown to the lions as penalty for arson, not Christianity, even if the accusation of arson was false)

Henryk Sienkiewicz’s 1895 novel “Quo Vadis” and its 1951 film adaptation popularized the imagery of Nero feeding these Christians to the beasts.

The four beer store owners in Whiteclay, Nebraska (population 14) who had their licenses revoked by the state for selling five million cans of beer a year across the state line (two miles) to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation have lost their case against their lawyer. The claim was he provided incompetent defence for their case to have their beer licenses restored.

Whiteclay is in the Panhandle, northeast of me in Sheridan County. The county commission offered support to the store owners because a substantial portion of the county tax base came from those four stores. The state withdrew their licenses because Whiteclay has no police department, Sheridan County refused to patrol it with the sheriff’s department, and it was constantly filled with inebriated Native Americans.

The town exists because in 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt withdrew the “Whiteclay Buffer” (a four-mile zone prohibiting anyone from living there) from Nebraska, after consulting no one. He believed this would improve trade with the Ogallala Sioux on the reservation.

Instead, alcohol sellers immediately set up shop in Whiteclay to bootleg across the state line into the reservation. The reservation has been trying to stop the sale of alcohol to the reservation for over one hundred years.

Judge rejects malpractice claim against former lawyer for Whiteclay liquor stores (Omaha World-Herald)

The owners of the stores say they will appeal the case.

Regular jobs are hard to come by in Whiteclay. The only steady work aside from ranches and farms was the beer stores. Since the beer stores closed, Dollar General opened a store there.

My parents are survivors of the great Palm Sunday outbreak of 1965. My mom’s house was literally jumped over by the tornado that decimated their small Indiana town. 33 years later, another tornado took an almost identical path through the town. I remember my parents taking us out of school early so we could go be with our grandmothers, and the town’s Barney Fife rolling around blaring from his car’s PA system that residents should seek shelter immediately, as another tornado had been sighted.

There are always ideologues who are more married to the ideology than their charismatic leader.

The Cult of Trump has a strong fascistic bent to it, but it is also celebrity worship.

Cheney objects to the celebrity worship part.

The purists among the GOP, the few who remain, reject the corruption that Trump embodies. But they still hold dear to the far right ideology.

I shudder to think what would have happened if they’d picked a better candidate to rally around. Or were his unique batch of bad qualities the reason the base picked him in the first place? I think Trump’s obvious defects are a big part of why the base loves him so much. In particular, the GOP base has been marinating in resentment for decades, and Trump is the single most resentful person on the planet. Most of the rest of the GOP contenders are crooks who are on top of the world because they are getting away with their crimes, and it is very difficult for them to be authentically resentful.

A three-times convicted sex offender from Omaha has been arrested by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department (seat: Council Bluffs, Iowa) for the thirty-eight year old kidnapping and murder of an Iranian student, Firozeh Dehghanpour, from the University of Omaha in Nebraska.

The cold case was reopened and the sheriff’s department sent clothes and other items to be tested for DNA. Nebraska had recently required convicted sex offenders to submit DNA, which the state also forwards to the FBI.

Fingerprint, DNA led officials to suspect in 1983 slaying of UNO student (OWH)

I think it’s because the character he played on TV represents what they all wish they could be. Many MAGAs live vicariously through people like Trump because he’s that no-nonsense, hard-nosed, SOB who is a billionaire as a result and has the guts to put the libs in their place in a way someone like Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, or some other RINO doesn’t. I used to be part of a charity called One Spirit. They match you with a kid, elder or family on Pine Ridge and you send what they need directly to them. There are no stores except liquor stores and convenience stores anywhere near there. You have to drive to Rapid City to get to a decent grocery store. Not possible if you’re too poor to own a running car. I spent about 5 years running huge boxes of everything from non perishable food, clothes, school supplies, a sewing machine and a ton of fabric, and on and on. I had money then, lol. It was a great experience. But that family fell apart when mom got busted with a pot plant she took from a patch she had tucked away from the house, the oldest dropped out of school and no one could figure out where they all disappeared to. Dad was an alcoholic, I think the oldest boy took the siblings and went to live with relatives. I think about them a lot.

It’s a fucking shame a decent grocery store and assorted other stores aren’t the tax revenue bonanza liquor stores seem to be. It’s disgusting what the government of South Dakota has allowed.

I should add that One Spirit has helped with other reservation project. There’s a bison herd now with a place to process the meat. A center for youth to learn computer skills and get help with school work, along with a program to help kids get better educational opportunities. There is still a huge need for mental health care and addiction issues. Progress is slow. It takes the rest of us to get involved just to provide the basics. We were Democrats the entire period we had a mortgage. Even when I supported Dubya’s and McCain’s presidential runs back when I was a Michael Tottenesque “liberal hawk,” I was still a registered Democrat and voted for Democratic candidates downballot. Sure. But those insurrectionists intended a slaughter at the capitol — if the above-and-beyond efforts of the Capitol Police and DCMPD had been unsuccessful in their defense of the premises and its occupants, Miley would have been ordered to bring martial law to the district, removed if he refused, and other flag officers might have felt duty-bound to obey.

I would agree it’s a pretty damn low fucking bar to clear to actually abide by our Constitution and laws, the fact remains that well over 70% of the current GOP caucus can’t/won’t clear it. It is the fact that isn’t being echoed by our media enough.

Which tells me that there are a few unkind additional truths, namely that our media doesn’t believe in those institutions any more than the GOP does. When it comes to the actual environment that you operate in, you shouldn’t be calling “balls and strikes” as if you’re “above the game”. If the GOP “wins” this game, they’re likely to be amongst the first against the wall. The fact that they “don’t see” that or believe that it couldn’t happen just shows that they are seriously piss poor students of history.

Political scientists name our current political system the Sixth Party System (the Fifth being the New Deal Coalition).

They are not agreed when the Sixth started, but generally point to the Civil Rights Era, with the current party system being cemented in place by Ronald Reagan.

Political party systems in the USA seem to last about thirty years before there is a realignment or the collapse of a major political party.

I don’t think Liz Cheney cares about Celebrity Worship. I think that she cares that the Mango Mussolini has lied about the results of the election and is still trying to take over the country, even after he got his ass kicked.

If you have ever seen a bull riding competition, you’ll understand.

Trump is the guy that got shot airborne off the bull 1.2 seconds after the gate opened.

You traditionally got no score if you didn’t ride the bull for 8 seconds. Trump wants us to believe that not one did he ride the bull for 8 seconds, he also got the highest score ever for an eight-second ride.

When I was in college these were taught as the start of American political realignments:

1776
1789—Ratification of the Constitution
1824—Death of the Federalist Party and collapse of the Democratic-Republican Party
1860—Republicans come to power
1896—Democrats turn Populist
1932—FDR coalition
1968—Nixon’s Southern Strategy
1994—Gingrich Revolution
And probably 2016—Trump Retrograde.

119
sagehen  May 6, 2021 • 10:15:00pm

Southern Strategy was an election strategy, but Nixon governed as really not such a right-winger — EPA, OSHA, Title IX, Title X, guaranteed federally funded dialysis, wage & price controls…

I’d date the Reagan Revolution as the realignment of my early adulthood, then the rise of the Obama coalition (which Biden is advancing).

Me neither. I payed it off a year before I retired in 2016.

Oh, and I got an unsolicited letter this week where a guy offered me a cash bid of $830,000 for my house.

On the one hand, it’s a lot of money. On the other hand, where would I go that is this close to what I love about Austin? The Symphony, Opera, and Ballet performance space is literally three blocks away from our house. I pay +/- $1,100/month in property taxes because we don’t have a State Income Tax here.

Rumor has it that the house next door got a $1.4 million cash offer last week. I think it’s accurate. We really don’t put houses in the inner neighborhoods up for sale. They are put up for auction.

Let’s be clear here about for which someone is willing to put up $1.4 million bongo buckaroos:

It’s a 50’ X 150’ lot. The front house is an updated 3/2, maybe 1,400 sq ft, at most, built in 1950 and clad in transite shingles. It’s in really great shape and though it’s pier and beam, it’s just flat as a strap.

An old greenhouse was converted to a studio living space ten years ago, which maybe has 250 sq ft. The old garage at the back of the property (slab) has been plumbed out and electrified, but is still just a nice 400 sq ft studio.

Downtown/near downtown neighbors are getting priced out of their homes. Hell, if I hadn’t been a smarty pants on a couple of investments after the crash in the late 80’s, I certainly couldn’t afford to buy here in my neighborhood today and would be hard pressed to still be able to live here.

By the way, we bought our house in 1997 for $155,000. At that time, our 50’ X150’ lot was valued at $25,000.

Our most recent property tax bill says the dirt is worth $475,000. This is bullshit. Our house value, in the same time frame, increased by $122,000.

The guy who wants to buy my house for $830,000 is a shill for a Real Estate Investment Trust who want to buy our property, scrape the house, and build a fucking McMansion.

No. Just no fucking no.

How the Right’s War on ‘Critical Race Theory’ Taps into the Powerful Religion of American Innocence (Religion Dispatches)

I would never pick a fight with the formidable Michelle Goldberg, but I must pick a tiny bone in respect to her new take on what the Right is up to in the current public school wars.

After aptly noting how the entire history of the modern Right’s rise could be traced to white Christians’ resistance to school desegregation and anything remotely affirming of queerness in public schools, Goldberg pivots to the new assault on “critical race theory” (I will follow her in using quotation marks, as the Right’s new target of choice is no more than a crude caricature):

Now the Christian right has more or less collapsed as anything but an identity category. There are still lots of religious fundamentalists, but not, post-Donald Trump, a movement confidently asserting itself as the repository of wholesome family values. Instead, with the drive to eradicate the teaching of “critical race theory,” race has moved back to the center of the public-school culture wars.

There is nothing even slightly wrong with Goldberg’s pivot, but she leaves out how religion continues to play a central and decisive role in the new anti-wokeness campaign, which of course is far broader and deeper than its eruption in our schools and colleges. She leaves out how the remaining “identity category”—whiteness—carries profound religious significance in a culture that long ago baptized whiteness and canceled any possible white sin through the blood of the Lamb.

LifeSiteNews, an often faith-themed website that snopes.com describes as “a known purveyor of misleading information,” announced the Facebook ban on its own website Tuesday (May 4).

“Facebook has just permanently banned LifeSiteNews’ Facebook page,” the announcement read. “This apparently is not a temporary measure: It is gone for good.”

The announcement quoted LifeSiteNews marketing director Rebekah Roberts, who framed Facebook’s decision as “another case of Big Tech silencing free speech on their platform.”

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the removal of LifeSiteNews’ page to Religion News Service on Wednesday, saying, “we have removed this page for repeatedly violating our COVID-19 policies.”

Obstruction of the ability to act with impunity.

Think twice before you whip out your phone and record a cop. You could be arrested. (South Florida Sun-Sentinal)

Taking smartphone videos of cops in public could shine a light on police misconduct — but it also could land you behind bars.

A divided Florida appeals court ruling on Wednesday upheld the arrest of a woman who filmed officers outside a movie theater.

The decision in a Boynton Beach case comes amid the nation’s racial justice awakening, after deadly police encounters with Black citizens were caught on camera. And it leaves open the question of whether a person recording George Floyd’s murder could have been arrested in Florida.

Officers had the authority to arrest a young mother named Tasha Ford who recorded them detaining her teenage son in 2009, based on a 2-1 opinion by judges at the 4th District Court of Appeal.

“In short, she obstructed their investigation and processing of her son’s detention — a lawful execution of their duty,” Judges Melanie G. May and Edward L. Artau wrote.

Property prices inside large cities go through a climbing stage that is quite dramatic, as a city grows.

Your offer of $830k would have been what a house in San Diego would have gone for… a few years ago, before the pandemic. Now the prices have really taken off as supply dwindled down to nil.

This is part of what is driving the socio-political divide in this country, the urban vs. rural division that now is mapped quite well to our two largest political parties.

Folks who estimate the price a home can sell for at Realtor dot com have the value of our house up over 150% of what we bought it for eleven years ago. (I’m guessing that’s a stretch.)

It is pictured in the entry, though the picture is out of date. (The house has been repainted, wood siding repaired, fence removed, roof completely replaced, garage torn down after the roof collapsed - replaced with a locally constructed 8 x 12 storage shed.)

74 sickened in COVID-19 outbreak at Peoples Church in Salem (Associated Press)

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon health officials say at least 74 people linked to a church in Salem have contracted COVID-19.

The Oregon Health Authority started investigating the outbreak at the Peoples Church on April 6, The Statesman Journal reported. The state did not release information about the outbreak until Wednesday.

The church’s website and Facebook page indicates in-person services and events continue to be held there including Mother’s Day services scheduled for Sunday. Officials at Peoples Church declined to respond to questions from the newspaper or acknowledge their specific outbreak.

“We are concerned about the COVID-19 surge in Oregon. This statewide increase has impacted our entire region, including our church family,” church spokesman Brent Kintz said in an email on behalf of church leadership.

No you’re not or you wouldn’t be having in-person church services in a county that’s been listed as “high” or “extreme” risk for the last several months. You’re concerned about the money in the basket, and you don’t care how many parishioners or other townspeople you kill or sicken to get it. Moving on:

Last year, Peoples Church joined nine other Oregon churches in a legal effort to overturn Gov. Kate Brown’s COVID-19 restrictions. The complaint, filed by California-based Pacific Justice Institute, argued that restrictions on churches violate constitutional protections for religious freedom.

According to the church’s Facebook page, Lead Pastor Scott Erickson and his wife, Bonnie, both were hospitalized with COVID-19 last month.

My house, bought for 226,000 EUR in 2003 (15 year loan, now paid off), 4 beds, bath, 2 wc, living, kitchen, 135m2 habitable (2 floors), on 323 m2 terrain.

15 minutes bus + 20 minutes train from central Paris.

Fuck knows what it’s worth now.

(In American 135m2 is 1,450 sq ft, 323m2 is 3,472 sq ft).

(The first time it was sold, in 1954, it went for 1,100,000 ancienne francs, the next time, in 1967 it was 72,000 nouveau francs).

(Ignoring inflation, that means the first sales price was 1,676 EUR, the second was 10,827 EUR)

(When it was built it was part of the largest bidonville (shanty town) in France, largely inhabited by Portuguese economic and political refugees).

It’s a shock to come to a major city on the west coast and see the price differences. Real estate demand and speculation created and entirely different economic realm.

That is why California population growth has slowed. California-hating wingnuts have over the years claimed that people are fleeing California, as if California is some horror. Well, if one is a right-wing atavist California may scare you, but the real reason people leave California is because it becomes too expensive to live here unless one 1) inherited some money, or 2) bought property here decades ago and sold them for giant profits, or 3) have hit it big in success in one’s chosen field of employment.

This same scenario will play out anywhere there is a sustained population boom. That is why our Austin friend now finds people cold-calling with cash, since Austin (like Dallas) has a long run of a population boom.

And to generalize: life on this planet is proceeding down the same path. Resource competition is driving the flow of money, land is being bid up around the world, the remaining old forests are being denuded as our billions and billions of fellow humans need more resources and space.

The timber industry in the US tries to convince people they are able to plant new trees as fast as they cut down old ones. While that may be true for a while, if one looks at say google maps and the satellite images, it is easy to see that “managed” forests look like quilts, with patches and strips of different ages.

What is not discussed is that as the US population grows so will timber demand. This is going to be quite consequential for Canada as well as the US.

Globally, the demand for housing is minimal compared to the demand for agriculture. The latter is why the Amazon is disappearing, not the former, though Manaus is growing quite quickly.

Getting back to American society and politics: the Trump cult will never really accept these kind of realities. When Trump first campaigned part of his schtick was the America and the world had un-depletable oil. Again, the market is at best a mechanism to help balance supply and demand and to direct capital flows to where they can do the most benefit.

The Randy Aynnies of America have made it into an ideology: an unregulated market as some idealized natural state of human existence and interaction to be striven for. It is not.

We have proven, time and again, that an unregulated free market is essentially anti-human in its nature. It makes no account of safety or health of the people that participate in it. The only way to have a “free” market that respects the liberty and sanctity of its participants is to regulate it, and quite heavily at that.

It needs to be regulated to ensure that it continues to benefit all participants: producers and consumers, employers and employees, creditors and debtors, etc…

Thank you, Dr. Science.

Could dinosaurs have caught COVID-19? (BBC Science Focus Magazine)

After all, how would a Tyrannosaurus Rex put on a facemask?

We can’t know for sure if a dinosaur could be infected with COVID-19, but studies of coronavirus genomes indicate that they originated after the dinosaurs went extinct. There is evidence that dinosaurs were affected by other diseases, however.

Palaeontologists have identified many ‘palaeopathologies’ on dinosaur bones, which indicate various maladies including bone cancer, gout, a bone infection called osteomyelitis and infestation from parasites.

In one famous case, the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton nicknamed ‘Sue’ was found to have many holes in its lower jawbone. The holes are similar to injuries seen in modern-day birds infected with a parasite called Trichomonas, which makes it difficult to swallow and breathe.

In the legislative and gubernatorial elections in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin’s DMK Party (a social-democratic party) has won the state elections in a landslide. The DMK formed the Secular Alliance with other left-leaning and centre-leaning parties.

Mr. Stalin became the party president in 2018. In 2019, the party swept most of the seats for the state in the national congress. In 2020, they swept most of the municipal elections.

Mr. Stalin is an atheist; he ran in the election supporting secular governance (as opposed to Hindu Nationalism), opposing the caste system, and supporting science.

India’s Prime Minister Narenda Modi and the opponents in the election have already called to congratulate him.

The Biden administration has sought to portray Afghan security forces as well equipped to handle the war on their own, but that view appears starkly different than the reality on the ground. Since May 1, when the United States formally began its withdrawal, the Taliban has taken territory in practically every corner of the country.

Six military bases collapsed in northern Baghlan Province Thursday. On Monday, in the western province of Farah, a military base was overrun. In the south, aside from nearly encircling the capital of Helmand Province, the Taliban seized a key dam in neighboring Kandahar.

At least 139 pro-government forces and 44 civilians were killed in Afghanistan the past week, the highest death toll in a single week since October, according to data gathered by The New York Times. The fighting has displaced thousands of families, and an important hospital in the country’s south has had a fresh influx of wounded and dead.

The articles touch superficially on Q beliefs and what the believers are up to in Sweden, but what they write is bad enough. They also have talked to experts as well as MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) and the Swedish Security Service (“SÄPO”), who unanimously describe QAnon as a security threat.

My state senator’s bill to turn Nebraska into a libertarian paradise has failed in the Unicameral.

Plan to replace all taxes with consumption tax falls short in Nebraska Legislature (Omaha World-Herald)

It needed 25 votes to pass. The vote was 23 Aye, 19 Nay, 5 Abstain, 2 Absent.

If passed by the Legislature and approved by voters, LR 11CA would eliminate virtually all state and local taxes in Nebraska and instead apply a consumption tax on all services and new goods. The measure would allow local governments to impose their own consumption taxes in addition to the state tax.

Erdman, who introduced the consumption tax idea last year, touted it as a solution to Nebraska’s “high tax” problems. He said people and businesses would be drawn to the state because they would not have to pay income, sales, property or inheritance taxes.

The same argument in reverse (high taxes) is also used by Republicans here to explain away youth “brain drain” from the state (not crappy conservative policies, because conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed).

The same argument in reverse (high taxes) is also used by Republicans here to explain away youth “brain drain” from the state (not crappy conservative policies, because conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed).

Massively regressive, since the poorer you are, the higher percentage of your income you have to spend.

More:

He [Sen. Steve Erdman] said the consumption tax would be applied to a much broader base than the current sales tax. It would apply to all new goods — but not used ones — and all services. The current excise tax on fuel would remain, however.

People would pay the tax on many items not now covered by the sales tax, such as food, medicine and new homes. They would pay it also on services such as vehicle repair, legal advice and haircuts. But used cars and existing homes would not be taxed.

Businesses would not have to pay taxes on their inputs, such as farm machinery, raw materials or accounting services.

To relieve the tax burden on low-income Nebraskans, all residents would get monthly checks from the government. The amount of the checks would be based on the consumption tax rate and the federal poverty level for each size of family. The checks would go to families no matter their income level.

He hasn’t said what they would be, but you can bet the first time the state was in a budget crunch (probably the first year of that debacle), those cheques would be ratcheted down to near nothing.

I don’t think a “consumption tax” (sales tax) on vital medications and services like auto maintenance or haircuts would be very popular, particularly when counties and municipalities could also impose “consumption taxes.”

When I was on the village board, I led a defeat to a proposed measure which would impose a 1/8% sales tax in the village. Afterwards, the business owners in town thanked me for that. (It didn’t endear me to my Republican colleagues on the board though.)

As the city council and mayor’s election in Omaha approaches (May 11), the letters in the Omaha World-Herald are getting more strident.

Mayor Jean Stothert (R) is seeking a third term in office. She is opposed by business owner RJ Neary (D).

Republican voters are trying to paint Democratic candidates for city council as “radicals” and “socialists.” (The only socialist in Nebraska government right now is Sen. Megan Hunt, who represents west Omaha in the Unicameral.)

Somehow they managed to make the bill awful in a different way than having child genital inspectors.

The legislation was initially stalled before being attached to a charter school bill, which passed smoothly through a Republican controlled state house last Wednesday. Lawmakers stripped a previous clause from the bill that could have allowed schools to inspect the genitals of student athletes to confirm their gender. Now, a birth certificate will determine where a student can play.

Lemme guess, Florida won’t let you change your birth certificate. Plus charter schools.

States really need a single-subject law for bills. Plus charter schools are crap.

And since I posted summaries elsewhere:

Qanon infiltrerar myndigheter (EN: QAnon infiltrates government agencies)
Apologize for translation issues, but should give you a hint (blame teh Google):

MJ came across a QAnon believer who worked as a coach for the Swedish Public Employment Service. In addition to QAnon, the coach also seemed to spread spiritualism, new age, other conspiracy theories, etc.
The article also superficially touches on which channels QAnon propaganda is spread via, such as GAB, Telegram, 8kun, as well as their involvement in the events at the Capitol in Washington D.C. 2021-01-06.
It goes a little superficially on what are the beliefs of the QAnon (un) faith, such as “cabal”, satanic world elite, “deep state”, mentions the overlap with similar anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, m.m.
The author of the article has also spoken to experts at QAnon and the Security Security Service (“SÄPO”) and MSB about QAnon, where fears are expressed that the QAnon movement can (and has) been used by foreign powers for influence operations, but also that it can instill courage in individuals, or groups of, QAnon believers to commit acts of violence.
The article concludes by describing how Morris got tired of AF and plans to start a company instead, and that he has reported the incident to JO (Justice Ombudsman).

re: #238 Teukka
Qanon har kommit till Sverige - riktar in sig på småbarnsföräldrar (EN: QANon has come to Sweden - targeting parents of small children)

(…) There is a father from western Sweden who fled to Poland with his son, several mothers who lost custody of their children, an editor-in-chief of a Swedish alternative science journal who nods in agreement, and a former police officer who assures that Swedish authorities infiltrated by Satanists and pedophiles.
The Bali Man lets them in one by one in the video conference. Guests receive spiritual counseling from an American medium who says she is a psychic. She advises that one should not trust society. The Bali Man continues:
- Share this video as much as you can. We really need to get this out, these are serious things.
The video with the Swedish parents was posted online in February 2021 and has today been viewed over 26,000 times on The Bali Mans Facebook account. From there, it has been further divided into 50 other groups that gather close to half a million members around the world.
His productions are spread via social media such as Youtube, Telegram, GAB or Parler. As recently as March this year, he released a similar video about Denmark.
It is largely the message of the American Qanon movement that is spread in The Bali Mans video broadcasts. He has participated in a podcast with the online cult and he has had several guests in his movies online who are supporters of the conspiracy sect. The infamous online cult is convinced that the world is ruled by a devil-worshiping elite who kidnap children and drink their blood to remain young themselves.
(…)
The Bali Mans video shows five Swedish parents that SvD was able to identify. All have fought infected and divisive custody disputes. They have either been sentenced to limited access to their children or the children have been taken into care with the support of LVU. In all cases after final judgments in Swedish courts. The children are thus with the other parent, or they live in a family home.
In despair over the court decisions, several of the disappointed parents have turned to The Bali Man.
(…)
Central Sweden, April 2021. The phone rings and a woman introduces herself on the other end of the line. It’s the woman in tassel from The Bali Mans video. We have tried to get in touch with her on several occasions. (…) The woman seems to be central to The Bali Mans Swedish activities. The Bali Man herself states that she “has the network in Scandinavia”. She is also the one who invited the Swedish parents who can be seen in the video.
At the same time, she is a staunch supporter of Qanon and frequently spreads the group’s worldview to her over 8,000 followers on social media. She is the administrator of a Qanon group on the Telegram app with over 600 members, where she describes herself as “Qanon in Sweden”. Both Swedes and people from other countries frequently post the online cult’s message in the forum.
This is about misinformation about the vaccine and covid-19, so here are some writing in English in posts shared in the group:
“Sick devil-worshiping fucking aliens!”, “The vaccine does not protect against covid, which does not exist either”, and:
“This damn vaccine killing industry, they’ve been trying to kill us for 100 years with their lies and poisons.”
Conspiratorial predictions and misinterpretations of major world events are made, and pedophiles and spiritualism are written about. But sometimes it is about fascism and racism, which is usually seen in right-wing extremist circles.
(…)
Southern Sweden, April 2021. Michael Zazzio is the editor-in-chief of an alternative medicine journal and site called “The Science of the 21st Century”. Like the ex-police and the Qanon woman, he also appears as an expert in The Bali Mans videos.
On a daily basis, Michael Zazzio is the CEO of a company that claims to be involved in education. He is also a member of a company that sells colloidal silver. During the pandemic, a lot of misinformation has spread that the substance would help against covid-19, which is rejected by authorities several times.
In The Bali Mans video, Zazzio talks about alleged child abductions and Satanists.
- We have a system where pedophiles found organizations, it is a hierarchical system. They in turn try to get some to control and decide. That way, they get access to children, he says in the video.
(…)
In the next part of the reportage series “Nätkulten”, we will look at how The Bali Mans organization has established ties to Swedish corona demonstrators and which international celebrities he leans towards in order to market himself. Celebrities who far from always know that they are used in conspiracy theoretical contexts.
- This is the first time I hear about these madnesses, says the world-famous philosopher Noam Chomsky when SvD tells how The Bali Man uses his name in his marketing. “

And the last one:

Protestledaren: “Jag är uppkopplad mot Jesus” (EN: Protest leader: “I am connected to Jesus”)

”(…) I ask if he can really feel at home in all the groups that follow, it’s a great mix. - I do not feel at home with everyone, but I feel a strong empathy with people who have strong opinions and who feel very lonely. Is that loneliness the common denominator for all those gathered, you mean? - Yes, and it is justified. It may be a little rude to claim that the state and the media are the virus, but there is truth behind it. The problem is that we lack leadership. The Swedish leaders are changing all the time, they have lost confidence, we do not have a strong leader in Sweden who shows the way for the people. And it shows in the crowd. (…) What about his own movement, Freedom and Truth, how does it relate to the grouping Freedom Sweden? Those who claim that they are behind the demonstrations and list Filip Sjöström as “vice chairman” on their various sites. I hear in Fililp Sjöström’s voice that this is sensitive. And he emphatically denies that he is part of the movement. - I was a bit involved in Freedom Sweden when we were to start it. But they were not the ones who organized the first demonstration. And I no longer engage in Freedom Sweden at all. (…) Is it a conscious choice that you have so far not spoken publicly about your faith and about God? - Yes, it’s a little charged. There are different vehicles for contacting God, and He may have different names. And I have chosen Christianity as the vehicle. But you can hardly dismiss all science and all it has given? - No absolutely not. But it has lost the universal intelligence of God, all that science cannot explain. When you have contact with God, you know what truth is, but when you are stuck in science, there is no truth. I want to make people feel that there is something bigger than science. Security? Certainty? - Yes, God. I believe this: a great leader in the future must have contact with God. There is a navigation. And so it was in the past. The great leaders had the ability to convey the vision of God, the divine. Today we have leaders who get lost in science, they do not have a clear vision. - I feel that I have a penchant for things like this and have come into the world to be a leader. (…) “

Yes, Democrats are spending money. Money that needs to be spent, because you and your kind have fucked up literally everything in this country, and it costs money to fix it.

Austerity, which became an obsession among policy makers across the US and Europe during the Great Recession, caused unnecessary suffering and unemployment for tens of millions of people. In the US, it took over a decade to get U6 unemployment back down to 8% (2007-2017). U6 unemployment includes people who are involuntarily underemployed, and people marginally attached to the workforce.

Hardcore no people are less than 20%. A lot of people would get vaccinated if it were easy, or are waiting a bit to be sure. Even many hard no people will take it if it’s mandated.

Business owners are getting scared the longer that the return to “normal” takes because their choices right now are to either raise wages/benefits or restrict services to what can be conducted with the staff they have on-hand. So they’re pushing for the third option that they really want: Force people back to work at existing starvation wages by cutting them off from any government help.

“President Biden took office more than three months ago, but Republicans are not any closer to accepting his victory now than they were then.”

“The latest CNN/SSRS survey, released on April 30, found that 70 percent of Republicans believed the false allegation that Biden did not legitimately defeat former President Trump; just 23 percent said Biden legitimately won. Meanwhile, Democrats (97-3 percent) and independents (69-27 percent) said Biden had won fairly. These numbers are very similar to what CNN/SSRS found in mid-January, just before Biden’s inauguration.”

“And this lack of movement is really the story.”

This scrolled by in my news feeds:
Many QAnon followers report mental health diagnoses (upi.com)

QAnon is often viewed as a group associated with conspiracy, terrorism and radical action, such as the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. But radical extremism and terror may not be the real concern from this group.
QAnon followers, who may number in the millions, appear to believe a baseless and debunked conspiracy theory claiming that a satanic cabal of pedophiles and cannibals controls world governments and the media. They also subscribe to many other outlandish and improbable ideas, such as that the Earth is flat, that the coronavirus is a biological weapon used to gain control over the world’s population, that Bill Gates is somehow trying to use coronavirus vaccinations to implant microchips into people and more.
As a social psychologist, I normally study terrorists. During research for Pastels and Pedophiles: Inside the Mind of QAnon, a forthcoming book I co-authored with security scholar Mia Bloom, I noticed that QAnon followers are different from the radicals I usually study in one key way: They are far more likely to have serious mental illnesses.

Significant conditions

I found that many QAnon followers revealed — in their own words on social media or in interviews — a wide range of mental health diagnoses, including bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and addiction.

[…]

Psychology of conspiracy
Research has long revealed connections between psychological problems and beliefs in conspiracy theories. For example, anxiety increases conspiratorial thinking, as do social isolation and loneliness.
Depressed, narcissistic and emotionally detached people are also prone to have a conspiratorial mindset. Likewise, people who exhibit odd, eccentric, suspicious and paranoid behavior — and who are manipulative, irresponsible and low on empathy — are more likely to believe conspiracy theories.

[…]

More serious problem

It’s possible that people who embrace QAnon ideas may be inadvertently or indirectly expressing deeper psychological problems. This could be similar to when people exhibit self-harming behavior or psychosomatic complaints that are in fact signals of serious psychological issues.
It could be that QAnon is less a problem of terrorism and extremism than it is one of poor mental health.

Counting for Thursday’s election for the Scottish Government has started, and some of the results are starting to come in. The elections operate under a sort of hybrid system, where about 2/3s of the members of the parliament are elected into constituencies representing an area using the first-past-the-post system, but there is also an additional vote where you vote for a party rather than a candidate, and the remaining members of the government are selected from party lists using a proportional representation count. The system has been designed so that it’s very hard for any single party to gain an overall majority, and so coalition governments have been the norm. (The outgoing government was a coalition between the SNP and the Greens.) The results that have come in are from the constituency vote, the party list results come tomorrow.

So far, there hasn’t been any surprises, the seats that have been declared have been holds (For the SNP, and one for the Lib Dems.). There’s been some swings of votes (Both to and from the SNP.) that some commentators have been trying to make sense of, but so far there’s been no obvious trend that could be a game-changer.

EDIT- Spoke too soon. The SNP have taken East Lothian from Labour. That’s the first change of seat.

EDIT EDIT- Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon keeps her seat.

So why is Super Chicken Mo Brooks dodging Swalwell’s subpoena?

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) has been evading efforts to serve him a complaint in Rep. Eric Swalwell’s lawsuit against the Alabama Republican over his role in inciting the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, according to Swalwell’s lawyer.

“We have been attempting to serve our complaint on Mo Brooks for more than a month,” Philip Andonian told Punchbowl on Friday.

“I talked to staffers in his D.C. office who promised a response from someone, which never came,” he continued. “I sent the complaint and a waiver of service form in a detailed email to his chief of staff and counsel, which to date remains unanswered.”

The lawyer said that “[i]t seems clear that Brooks is choosing to make a political stunt out of a part of the process that essentially is a formality, which is unfortunate.”

Yeah, that’s who these assholes who accuse the rest of us of “fear of normalcy” sound like. They want to go get drunk at the bar, they want to gorge themselves at the local restaurant, and party at the local club without worry. And because they can’t enjoy themselves without masks and social distancing, they accuse us being the “buzzkills” who are keeping them from having a good time.

In other words people who get upset over simply being inconvenienced.

Seeing this on Facebook with the jackasses alternating between “Blue Lives Matter/patriotic flag hugging” and “Thuggish Police State” depending on how they perceive government action affecting their privilege and convenience. Minor thing at the Whole Foods I frequent…they had created one spot to wait for an open register, with an employee directing traffic. That’s no longer the case. You can wait in line at any open register. Also, they had been separating the entrance and exit—all one way traffic. Now everything is two ways again.

The interrogation of witnesses on September 11 starts - classified FBI material closes the doors (svt.se) (Swedish)

After several attempts, the interrogation where a person in Sweden is heard for the first time about the 9/11 attacks could begin today. But the special nature of the case quickly closed the courtroom doors.
The hearing, which is conducted on behalf of a court in New York through Södertälje District Court, takes place at Attunda District Court. This according to the court due to the fact that the case received so much attention.

Back in the Scottish elections, another gain for the SNP- they’ve taken Ayr from the Conservatives.

This, combined with the SNP gain in East Lothian, is big news, but ironically, it may mean they also lose a seat. The overall regional vote for the list MSPs is weighted towards parties that have popular regional votes, but not less constituency MSPs, so the SNP gaining two constituency MSPs in the same region could mean they lose a list seat or two that they might have otherwise gained when the regional votes are counted up. (If this sounds complex, yes it is.)

EDIT: Here’s someone on BBC explaining this.

So you invented the US’s poor representation system, just the long way around.

Addendum:

Holding a hearing in a high-security courtroom, behind closed doors and with gag orders is not something that is easily accomplished in Sweden.

What I don’t get is they say they are using excess mortality rate as a base to determine total covid deaths, but I haven’t seen any excess mortality count that high. I think the report I saw last month had excess mortality close to 600000 which was definitely more than reported covid deaths but I haven’t seen anything close to 900000 reported for excess mortality.

re: #361 Belafon

So you invented the US’s poor representation system, just the long way around.

Well, perhaps I didn’t explain the situation as clearly, given that the system of elections for the Scottish Government are both deceptively simple and complex. It attempts to balance both the advantages of a first-past-the-post constituency system (Elected members can represent a local area.) with the advantages of a proportional representational regional system. (Parties with a popular vote that would not be represented because they have a significant level of vote within a region, but the votes not concentrated within the specific locality of a constituency, can also be represented in the Scottish Government. For example, the Green Party in Scotland.)

So, what that means in practice is: in the Scottish Government elections, you have two votes:
1) A vote for your local constituency: in my case, it’s the constituency of Glasgow Provan. I would vote for a particular person for a particular party to be the Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) for that constituency. This vote is first-past-the-post. More than half of the MSPs are elected this way.
2) A regional list vote for a party, this vote is for a party. The votes are calculated in a Proportial Representation basis with relation to which constituency MSPs have been elected, and biases against which party has been most successful on that account versus how popular that party is on the regional list vote. So, if your party didn’t win any constituency MSPs, but the vote was high enough in general in that region, the party will win list MSPs, that is extra MSPs, selected from a list selected by that party. (This list will be on voters’ ballot papers.) MSPs elected on the regional list are equal in power to MSPs elected to a constituency. Indeed, every single leader of every single party in the Scottish Government was initially elected as a regional list MSP. Various “small” parties, such as the Greens, have often been able to enter and be a part of the Scottish Government as a result of the regional list component of the Scottish Government elections.

As you might guess from my description above, there is a question: can you game this system? Well, theoretically, yes, you can potientally game the system. However, given that it’s playing first-past-the-post against proportional representional methods that depend on a quick reaction to a first-past-the-post that might neither be cut and dried nor representative of a trend, the chaotic element of that makes gaming the system a great deal more difficult.

re: #125 austin_blue

No. Just no fucking no.

hell, make him a counteroffer. 1.5 million. for that kind of money, presumably you could buy further out and just drive in once in awhile.
