I’m actually worried because I have a number of former co-workers from India, and no way to really know how any of them are doing.

New vaccine blocks COVID-19 and variants, plus other coronaviruses

A potential new vaccine developed by members of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute has proven effective in protecting monkeys and mice from a variety of coronavirus infections — including SARS-CoV-2 as well as the original SARS-CoV-1 and related bat coronaviruses that could potentially cause the next pandemic.

[…]

In tests of its effect on monkeys, the nanoparticle vaccine blocked COVID-19 infection by 100%. The new vaccine also elicited significantly higher neutralizing levels in the animals than current vaccine platforms or natural infection in humans.

[…]

“There have been three coronavirus epidemics in the past 20 years, so there is a need to develop effective vaccines that can target these pathogens prior to the next pandemic,” Haynes said. “This work represents a platform that could prevent, rapidly temper, or extinguish a pandemic.”

Whenever there will be a general purpose coronavirus vaccine, and governments start mandating vaccinations for participation in this or that activity… the howls from the gallery will be loud.

The anti-vaxxers ignore the original SARS and the even more scary MERS. There is reason to think that such outbreaks could occur again, with another coronavirus.

Large scale vaccinations push all the buttons in the conspiracy complex industry. Which here in America we have a plenty.

But I think over the years it will become increasingly obvious that with growing human populations the need for global vaccination programs will be accepted.

Ohio man falsely claims to work for CIA, FBI, and DEA to get out of traffic ticket: ‘I have too much authority’

A man pulled over by police last week in Brook Park, Ohio, claimed to be, variously, a CIA officer, FBI agent, DEA agent, and a U.S. Treasury agent. The bizarre roadside interaction ended with his arrest on charges of impersonating a federal officer, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court.

A question that is mostly a thought experiment:

A Veblen good is a type of luxury good for which the demand for a good increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand, resulting in an upward-sloping demand curve. The higher prices of Veblen goods may make them desirable as a status symbol in the practices of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure. A product may be a Veblen good because it is a positional good, something few others can own.

If you want that good simply because it works in a specific way that no other good does and you spend month looking for the cheapest possible working copy of that good, is it still a Veblen good?

I am bidding on a Leica M (type 240) digital camera which in many ways is the definition these days of Veblen good. Yet if one wants a digital camera that is a rangefinder, well, that’s it. It’s the only one still on the market. Hence the question :)

And people think economics is boring…

Delhi seems to be doing the worst in the epidemic right now, proportionally. Several states (with a majority of India’s population) have introduced total lockdowns, including Delhi which is not really a state, being in a DC like situation, except with greater home rule.

Delhi also is getting swamped by patients from the surrounding urbanized areas that are parts of states that are far poorer.

Neighboring Uttar Pradesh has a GDP per capita of about 1/5th of Delhi’s — about $1,000 in _nominal_ terms. Delhi’s is about $6,000 per person in nominal terms. India’s cost of living is about 1/3rd of America’s using Purchasing Power Parity.

yes, sometimes we forget we are interacting with people.
not just a bot
or a nameless, faceless voice on a phone

though that can be sometimes odd because the first menu navigator voice can be one of those auto-bots

but eventually it’s a representative, it’s customer support - it’s a real live person

companies train at great lengths to keep the humanity from coming through

still when i talk to someone on a support call i always ask how they are or how their day is - even if it’s a website support chat and not voice

i often ask where they are but that can appear kind of creepy

I frequently get random calls from recruiters even though I am retired. They read from a script which goes, “Hello, this is [name] from [company]. How are you today?”

Fuck that. They’re not asking “how I am today” they are reading from a script. Instead of reaching out with “that human touch” I feel enraged that somebody is wasting my time with this useless shit.

Maybe the next time I get such a call I should ask how THEY are doing today.

I read this letter at electoral-vote.com yesterday

it starts

Regarding the discussion about police militarization, it seems an inevitable response to the militarization of criminals. All the bad persons are now armed and armored for war. I don’t blame the police for wanting armored vehicles, helmets, body armor, assault weapons, and the whole kit. Urban policing can go from boring and uneventful to very deadly with no warning. In any situation, they could be going up against firepower that puts a patrolman with a pistol at a big disadvantage…

and it set me off.

here’s some random thoughts in no particular order

it’s silly and lazy thinking that all criminals are armed to the teeth. some are, some arent. and ‘criminal’ covers a lot of territory.

take a look at the list of ‘unreasonable killings’ by police. almost none of those people were armed *at all*. Many were mistaken for being armed - ie cell phones.

then take a look at the escalation of innocuous stops and detainments that eventually led to killing by police. there are so many, do i need to list them?

it’s a mindset, not a fact, that every police encounter has the potential to turn asymetrically violent to the disadvantage of the police.

A beat cop, or a vehicle patrol cop should not be ready for *anything*. A lot, yes, anything, no.

Any more than I walking on the street should be ready for anything merely because there are nuts with guns out there who might target me randomly.

No - there’s SWAT and tactical units.

then, with no-knock warrants, the police go in clearly with might and surprise on their side. Sometimes they GET THE ADDRESS WRONG. They still manage to kill people justifiably unaware that who just busted in are really police. Some of them defend themselves, some didn’t.

Sure, jurisdictions/territories/city-rural are different.

Sane policy should be that an officer be *reasonably* protected *and* well trained to avoid what they can. But no one can avoid everything - neither can I. If an individual isn’t willing to accept some risk of the job, then don’t take it.

We have a broken mindset about what a cop is, what a cop does, what a cop should be facing and what could be dealt with by others.

/rant off

Interesting Guardian article re Biden’s openness as president. But comments made by historian Jon Meacham re Republican voter base frustration is telling:

In March, Jon Meacham put together a meeting between Biden and a group of fellow historians at the White House that lasted more than two hours. What did he learn about the 46th president?

“He’s like an upside down iceberg,” the Pulitzer prize-winning historian says by phone. “You see most of it and that’s not spin: there’s just not a lot of mystery to Joe Biden. The last four or five minutes of his press conference in the East Room [on 25 March] when he talked about democracy and autocracy, that was pretty much it.”

[…]

Republicans made campaign promises in election after election but failed to follow through,[Meacham] argues, resulting in a buildup of frustration among their voters. “We haven’t had a major political party of ours lose its bearings so profoundly perhaps in American history. I wanted to try to give a historically informed understanding of why this has happened now on the grounds that if you have a diagnosis, then at least you can think about treatments.

“I don’t think Trump emerged out of the ether. This was a long time coming because the base itself has been disenchanted and aggrieved by the paucity of the fruits of victory going back to world war two. It’s not just that Trump himself has superpowers; it’s a matter of context. The podcast is basically my understanding of why so many otherwise sensible Republicans signed on to a cult of personality.”[…]

Exactly; IMO, the Casio GW-M5610-1 is the best value wristwatch on the market. Solar-powered and radio-controlled timekeeping, water resistant to 200 meters, stopwatch, lap timer and multiple alarm functions, I’ll take that over a good many other watches out there, including luxury brands. And when you dress it up with a stainless steel bezel and bracelet (an easy and relatively inexpensive mod), it looks great too.

It’s a relatively inexpensive wristwatch, but value being subjective, I’ll take this over a $5,000 model any day.

My refrain has been that Trump is the symptom, not the cause.

Outsiders of the US don’t seem so aware that our culture war is a religious war, and that the US is in a transformative era where it is becomes obvious that the push back against conservative Christianity as a de facto national religion has forced the GOP to take ideological stances that are increasingly shrill.

Specifically white nationalist Christianity. It’s more about whiteness than Jesus. They had to warp their theology two centuries ago to justify African slavery as a moral good, and their white nationalist politics and theology is all intertwined together in an obscene, incoherent perversion justifying evil as good.

Those chicks are only slightly safe once they got to college. But mom, dad, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc are still out there, lurking, unless you’re far enough away, ready to narc on you for even looking at an “unacceptable” boy.

Even back in the 80’s.

It doesn’t amaze me… sort of amazes me… that all those Americans living in states which proudly boast of not having income taxes never come to their senses.

If those states would implement income taxes, at least for those people who on the Federal taxes are in the top three tax brackets, those states would have the revenues to fix all those things that are broken (like roads, water and sewer, toxic dumps, etc.) And to spend more on students, too.

But no, the poison of anti-taxation is too strong.

I suspect it’s a function of the low density of those states. If you’re on the road more, there will be more accidents — that’s why blue New Mexico is on the list. The graph states, it’s fatality rate per _drivers_, not per miles driven.

That’s not to say that that the low density of those states also accounts for a greater anti-government tendency, just in that it’s a lot harder to sweep away your problems under a rug in dense areas, when the effects of poverty are much more visible and much closer to you…

The claim is that someone hacked the machines remotely and altered the vote totals before the receipts were printed. Their thinking is that they can get access logs for the networking gear and prove that some nefarious agent gained access to the network. I doubt routers keep logs that long; that is a LOT of data. And you’re completely batshit fucking nuts if you think any government agency is giving any ordinary citizen any fucking passwords.

re: #10 William Lewis

And people think economics is boring…

yeah, leica is kind of legendary for brand name premium cost.

Exactly. Women exist only in their relationship to men. An assault on a woman is an assault on “her man”. These men are barbaric savages who have no place in civilization. Not that most of them want civilization, thinking that their collection of ARs will make them petty kings in a post civilization world.

The insanity in Arizona continues.

Are you kidding me?

Last week, the state Senate decided to delay the personal canvassing of voters, in which Cyber Ninjas operatives grilled residents about their voting. Republicans in the Senate backed off after receiving a complaint from the U.S. Department of Justice that such action could amount to illegal voter intimidation and civil rights violations.

Arizona Senate President Karen Fann told the Justice Department that if that portion of the project is restarted, canvassers “will not carry a firearm or other weapons” when they knock on citizens’ doors.

When I worked for the County instead of the small city I’m with now, we actually issued building permits for a few of those. I was shocked they pulled permits, but contractors tend to insist on them, being mandated under their licenses and all.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLOX) - The same day one of Mississippi’s top elected officials recommended the action. Gov. Tate Reeves announced Mississippi would opt out of additional federal unemployment benefits.

Reeves has also asked the Department of Employment Security to prioritize pre-pandemic enforcement of eligibility requirements under state law.

Mississippi’s Speaker of the House published a letter asking the governor to take steps to get people off unemployment and back to work.

The benefits will end 6/12. Two months earlier than Federal law allows for.

true that, I think she’s trying too hard to step into some non-existent niche of “progressive-libertarian” so she can maintain some kind of iconic “above it all mojo” which everyone supposedly applauds but has never listed as a reason to cast their votes.

She won in AZ because McSally was worse and she was transparently so in her hypocrisy. She may win again as an incumbent but that could be more due to the fact that the GOP bench has an extraordinary rich vein of whackadoodles to pick from and the state is trending, slowly but surely away from the GOP. All she has to do is support the winning team, by doing things like improving health-care, pimping solar and doing good stuff for the tribes. For some reason she is having issues being as pragmatic as we Lizards are, which raises questions regarding who the hell is she beholden to?

Eh, I’d rather he spend it on something incredibly frivolous (that is a might large hole in the water into which he will throw many, many dollars), that will at least help pay people who built the boat and it’s various parts, and will likely have a crew that will also get paid, than for that money to sit in a vulture capital fund that ruins lives

But I haven’t been paying too much attention to Sinema lately, so I’m not sure what she’s up to. I think you nailed it with progressive libertarian. She’s adopted a bizarre set of principles that don’t really match any constituency. As you say, she may well win simply because the local GQP is so bat shit crazy. Ducey isn’t crazy, but he’s a terrible politician and all sides hate him over his handling of COVID. On top of that he’s got an awful temper. Watch him take a non obsequious question and he gets visibly agitated, turning bright red, sometimes even shaking in anger. It’s embarrassing.

Confederate Memorial Day should be observed, since most of the Confederate dead were ignorant, poor men who were manipulated, tricked and often forced into risking their lives for their slave-owning superiors. They were so ignorant, in turn, because southern aristocrats deliberately kept them that way by almost unanimously opposing publicly funded education. One of the big differences between Billy Yank and Johnny Reb was that Billy was far more likely to be able to read and write.

Thinking about the whole employment/wage/treatment of workers situation, and I have first-hand evidence from all over the country that treating people kindly and paying them a living wage brings results. Long story, so it’s “behind closed doors.”

One of the big differences between Billy Yank and Johnny Reb was that Billy was far more likely to be able to read and write.

In August 1861, John C. Perkins, assisted by Seth Pierce, Frank McGuire, Thomas G. Butler and Victor Wolf, recruited a company of volunteers from Eau Claire and Chippewa Counties. This company was called the “Eau Claire Badgers”. Soon after its formation, a local man sold them a eagle chick that they named “Old Abe” after the President.

They would become Company C, 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.

To this day he’s the mascot of one of the high schools in my home town.

I’m just going to say two things.

1) My dad thought my waist length hair was “unprofessional”, even though I kept it pulled back.

2) I learned in the last year that Black hair products work better with my curls.

I could say more but I’m too tired right now. Work was crazy.

For what it’s worth, progressive-libertarian is probably a decent description of my political philosophy today. But I haven’t been paying too much attention to Sinema lately, so I’m not sure what she’s up to. There definitely seems to be a strain of contrarianism in her politics - which isn’t bad per se - but there doesn’t seem to be any sort of unifying theory underlying many of her actions.

She got the wrong vaccine and it’s Cindy McCain’s voice in her head.

We took him to the oral surgeon and they removed that tooth, did a bone graft to start an implant. We go back on July 12th to finish that.

The other incisor is questionable. The oral surgeon put in a mini brace to try to pull it back in place. If it doesn’t work, we will have tonhave that one replaced.

But he’s eating. I’m sure he’s going to get tired of soup so I have to start thinking up recipes for food soft enough to grind.

It is!

For an origin story, check out this:

One of the people quoted in this is an instructor of my wife when she was at the LBJ School and a god friend of mine (he appointed me to a City Commission for a four year term while he was a City Councilcritter).

It’s a long read. You should save it for later.
