Eric Boehlert:

‘…”It’s time the media stop covering the GOP as a political party - it’s not,” tweeted SiriusXM radio show host Dean Obeidallah. “Today’s Republican party is a white nationalist, fascist movement and those exact words need to be used by the media so everyone gets the threat the GOP poses to our nation.”

It’s clearly a conservative movement that’s flown off the rails, and resembles nothing we’ve seen before in modern American politics.

Just in recent days:

• Republicans in Arizona running the clown ‘audit’ of the 2020 election are searching for traces of bamboo in paper ballots to prove they are counterfeits smuggled in from Southeast Asia.

• A Colorado State representative referred to a colleague as “Buckwheat” while addressing the House.

• QAnon loyalist and Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene aggressively confronted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in the halls of Congress, and falsely accused her of supporting “terrorists.”

• 124 GOP-friendly retired generals and admirals released an open letter spreading the lie that President Joe Biden stole the election, while labeling him a “Marxist” and “tyrannical” threat to America.

• A Republican lawmaker in Michigan wants to force non-partisan “fact checkers” to register with the state and face $1 million fines if public officials prove “wrongful conduct” in their work.

Nervous about claims of “liberal media bias” though, the press holds back’.pressrun.media

The Democrats apparently were determined not to run a partisan investigation, even though the GOP has great success running umpteen partisan Benghazi investigations. The GQP will protect Republican officials from having to answer questions about their involvement in the attack.

We also need to replenish the rainy day fund. We needed it in 2020 (and used it), there will come a time when we need it again.

We’re also going to need to put some aside for fire needs. In fact, I can see a lot of better uses for it than an across-the-board tax refund.

Republicans hate statewide elections for everything which is what Ballot initiatives are. That’s because all of their attempts to gerrymander are useless.

This is also why Republicans are against the popular election of senators. Because, it would give them control, against the wishes of the majority.

$100 billion surplus: Newsom expands budget as California awash in tax money, federal dollars

[…]

His proposed budget includes $35 million over five years to pay for “universal basic income pilot programs.” It’s built on the idea of giving lower-income people a set amount of money each month to ease the stresses of poverty that make it harder for people to find full-time jobs and stay healthy. Critics say free money provides a disincentive to work.

He also included money to give Medicaid benefits to people 60 and older living in the country illegally. California already pays for health care for children and adults up to age 26 in that immigration category.

Newsom said he wants to spend $11 billion to build what his office termed “a modernized transportation system for the next century.” That includes not only repairing decayed roads and bridges, but more spending for the state’s troubled bullet train, other public transportation, the state’s ocean ports, and projects around the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

[…]

There’s enough items in Newsom’s budget to drive Fox News hosts into thousands of hours of on-screen whining.

It’s worth noting that Jack Sellers is a Republican. In fact, four of the five members of the board of supervisors are Republican. Not a one of these people is supporting senator Karen Fann and her “audit.”

The biggest issue is providing Fann and her criminal bunch of “auditors” passwords and information about routers. That’s because the county’s routers carry traffic beyond just election traffic. Sheriff Penzone is very unhappy, says it would be a security compromise. (He’s right.)

Investigation: Marjorie Taylor Greene filed homestead exemptions on 2 homes, violating state law

“…Channel 2 investigative reporter Justin Gray pulled records showing that the Greenes are getting the tax break on two different homes in two different counties.

In a statement, Greene’s office told Gray to mind his own business and called it a “pathetic smear” when he asked them about the homestead exemptions.

Greene still owns a North Fulton county home, but also bought a $610,000 house in Floyd County last year in the 14th Congressional district, which she represents.

Here’s a little more info/analysis of the Jan. 6 Commission (Daily Kos)

Thompson and Katko have crafted legislation to create a commission modeled after the 9/11 panel. It would have 10 members, half of them appointed by Democratic congressional leaders, who would also appoint the chair. Republicans would appoint the other half, including the vice chair. Critically, if the chair and vice chair agree, the panel would have the power to issue subpoenas. So, problematically, they can veto each other’s efforts to subpoena witnesses or documents. On the other hand, the chair is given sole power to get information from federal agencies and to appoint staff.

That, New York University law professor Ryan Goodman tells Greg Sargent at The Washington Post, gives the forces of truth a chance to prevail. “Thanks to powers invested in the Chairperson alone, the Democratically-appointed members would have significant control over the direction of the investigation,” Goodman said, helping to prevent Republican appointees from “engaging in mischief.” He added that the “Chairperson would be able to move ahead quickly with getting information from the government without needing a vote,” saying that the chair can “appoint staff” who would “shape how the investigation and hearings unfold.”

Her reality show tanked badly… she drove cross country in an RV with half a dozen trans women of approximately her age, who’d been very helpful during her transition. Possibly, they are in San Diego rather than El Paso though. They are all journalists. Harassed every time they were at the border. One had their passport information (or perhaps the fast-track border crossing info) change ethnicity from “White, Non-Hispanic or Latino” to “White, Hispanic or Latino” without their knowing it and I believe they had to use a FIOA inquiry to find that out.

I heard Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” on the radio today and decided to learn it. I really don’t have much of a problem playing C-shaped barre chords anymore, so it’s not hard. I have one of those six-degrees of separation things going though. My good friend from our high school band played drums for Joey Molland’s Badfinger for several years—lots of state fairs and the like and I saw them a couple of times. It wasn’t nearly like the original lineup, but the fans loved it.

My friend is the guy who runs the studio in rural Wisconsin where Cory Wong has gone a few times to sit in on sessions that I’ve posted about before. I was thinking how fun it would be to have a couple of Badfinger songs under my belt the next time I go to see him, but now he’s got some super quality session people playing there, so it would be nothing more than quaint.

After the Joey Molland experience he toured with the Gin Blossoms for a few years. There are stories to tell, but I won’t break confidentiality.

So anyway, I’ve decided that I’m going to spend my spare time this summer—apart from research, etc.—learning tons of classic pop songs.

Does anyone here watch Bull?

They obviously want the viewers to believe that fine lawyering and cleverly picking the right jury is key to success in trials, but…

My takeaway is that all of their victorious verdicts, every single one of them, is down to them having two excellent investigators on staff — one cyber, one shoe leather. It always the investigators who find the critical info to inform the strategy. Every single goddamned time. All of their clients would have been convicted without the kind of investigations that no public defender, and damn few private attorneys (even from top-dollar white shoe firms) would have done.

There is no civil war in the Republican Party—the Confederates won long ago.

Instead, we are witnessing the end of a long molting process as the GOP slithers into its final form: a counter-majoritarian, fascist entity.

Republicans are shedding their masks and hoods, spitting out their dog whistles and outright embracing the Big Lie and the violent insurrectionists, conspiracy theorists, and racists who make up the party’s base and, increasingly, its representatives in Congress.

The Reverend Megan Rohrer, who uses they/them pronouns, was elected bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) in America’s Sierra Pacific synod, based in Sacramento, California, for a six-year term. This makes Rohrer the first openly transgender person elected to serve as a bishop for a major Christian denomination in the nation. Notably, Rohrer was actually the first openly transgender person to be ordained in the ELC back in 2006, and again, the first openly transgender person to serve as a pastor back in 2014.
