The campaign for D.C. statehood just got a big boost, Greg Sargent
washingtonpost.com

One of the most nettlesome objections to extending congressional representation to the residents of Washington, D.C., is that it requires a constitutional amendment. Many Republicans say this, which is hardly surprising. But it’s also the position of Sen. Joe Manchin III (d-w.va.), whose opposition could doom the effort.
Now, however, several dozen leading constitutional law experts are weighing in with a new letter that seeks to demolish this argument once and for all, making the case that granting D.C. statehood is absolutely within Congress’ constitutional authority. This should give the cause a big boost at a critical moment.

I did not understand the issue Manchin was objecting to, and now it makes more sense, but this letter responds to his objection.

Is that Manchin’s reason for objecting, or is that his excuse for inaction?

I think the real “issue” Manchin has with granting DC statehood is having to explain to his constituents in WV why he would vote to give *Those People* another two guaranteed Democratic Senators and a voting Rep: the “Constitutional” issues are just so much smoke…..

My cynical take is that Joe Manchin wants to be the center of attention or hold out for more for his constituents…

Edit: My even more cynical take is that this is a good way to solve the “constitutional issues” as long as he gets some more bacon for his constitutents.

Commerce Department security unit evolved into counterintelligence-like operation, Washington Post examination found

Incoming Commerce leaders from the Biden administration ordered ITMS to pause all criminal investigations on March 10, and on May 13 ordered the suspension of all activities after preliminary results of an ongoing review, according to a statement issued by department spokeswoman Brittany Caplin.

“While police have not confirmed how he got inside, local media reports that the man dropped his phone inside the statue and was trying to retrieve it, BBC News reports. He fell inside, hanging upside down, and was able to call for help. However, police have not confirmed how the man got inside the dinosaur.
Police are awaiting the results of the autopsy to find out the cause of death.
The Stegosaurus statue, which advertised an old cinema, has been removed, BBC News reports.”

The stegosaurus was removed because once the guy’s body was gone, it went ex stink.

To me the most noticeable thing about the video is the mother acting like a toddler and letting go of the balloon when her mind switched from holding the balloon to slapping the existing child over her refusal to cooperate with the stunt ruining mom’s party.

the event was not staged for the child, like a birthday party

It could be the opposite: as long as Manchin is not the linchpin vote, he can kinda get lost in the noise and still tell his constituents “hey, it’s not quite what I wanted, but I’m not calling the shots in Washington.” Now, if the filibuster is gone, his vote IS the linchpin: if he wants something to pass it passes and if not it fails. Nowhere to hide. So, having the filibuster there means he can still say that he’s not the linchpin vote, and whatchagonnado. Which breaks down on a little bit of thinking, but that takes…a little bit of thinking.

However, from what I’ve heard he honestly seems to believe this comity shit. It seems possible to me that this whole exercise of trying to put together a Jan 6 commission is designed mostly to show Manchin and Sinema and any more squishes that you can fucking forget about ten gooper Senate votes for basically anything besides keeping the lights on.

There still are a lot of places where one of Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema are the deciding votes — all Senate-confirmable positions. He was already able to scuttle Neera Tanden’s nomination to OMB because of that.

Rasmussen Reports, which Trump regularly promoted throughout his one term in office because it gave him consistently stronger approval ratings compared to other pollsters, informed its readers that Biden is “on track for his highest 3-day average daily presidential job approval % of his new presidency.”

Trump fans were not shy about letting Rasmussen know their displeasure, however

A new Ipsos poll finds 56% of Republicans believe the 2020 presidential election was rigged or the result of illegal voting, and 53% think Donald Trump is the actual President, not Joe Biden.

of course if TFG won the election in 2020, then he’s been elected to the Presidency twice. That means (under current rules //) he’s ineligible to run in 2024

otoh, his second term seems so much more competent that his first.

the r’s are not negotiating in good faith
quelle surprise

Joe Biden is following the script and has just made a concession to the Republicans, knocking $500 billion off the $2.2 trillion he originally wanted. The Republicans followed their script as well, instantly demanding much more in the way of concessions. Their proposal is $568 billion, but about $300 billion of that is normal spending that happens every year. It is like the Republicans raising their offer to $1.4 trillion, but counting the current annual $800 billion in Social Security payments as part of it. So the Republican plan has only about $225 billion in new spending, about 10% of what Biden asked for, and the Republicans didn’t raise this in response to Biden’s new bid…”

If it takes white guilt to make you raise a good child (which I’m sure doesn’t actually apply to her), then I rank it up there with needing to believe in a god to do the right thing. I would hope you would do the right thing regardless, but I’ll take the result.

Incoming Washington Post editor leaves behind an AP debacle
Caving in to GOP trolls

Eric Boehlert

I had not realized it (duh), but Sally Buzbee is an important editor at AP, at the same time AP gave in to right wing “outrage” about Emily Wilder’s college pro-Palestinian tweets, and terminated her employment soon after she was hired. That puts the finger on both the AP and WaPo.

Charlie Pierce may not be as young as he was, but he came out with two posts on his blog today that are especially worth the read:

Bob Dylan Is 80-Years-Old Today. His Soul Is Infinitely Older.
He’s been calling America’s bluff since the day he rolled into Greenwich Village.
esquire.com

Daniel Ellsberg Is 90 Years Old and Still Causing Trouble
The man behind the Pentagon Papers is back with some horrifying revelations about the American Cold War government.

I’m old, too, but not in this class!

suspect the same, the “proprieties must not only be observed, but embraced” otherwise the media would crucify them in the fiery flames of “bi-partisanship” not being observed. Doesn’t matter how many times the GOP reverses direction, argues in bad faith or flat out lies because after each instance, the memory meter of the media is reset to zero. Naturally, this only works for Republicans, because as also evidenced by the media, everything that a Democrat says is “forever” and no change or considered rethinking on a policy or statement over the last 40 years is allowed without review of ulterior motives or squishiness.

For all we know, Biden has spoken to Manchin to adopt this very position and provide cover for the expected GOP behavior. Giving them every opportunity to hang themselves.

While I understand the need, it delays actual work getting done and implemented and we’re just one unexpected death or accident removing a senator from voting throwing us into deadlock and playing into McConnell’s clutches. In short, I loathe it and it all boils down to expected media narratives and who sets them.

Look on the bright side. Most of the Senators most at risk for imminent death (by seven to three, if I recall correctly) are repugs.

So there is some hope Manchin may eventually see the light. Not holding my breath though, and Sinema and others would have to agree to reform the filibuster as well.

Senate Dem Joe Manchin was outraged that his Republican colleagues were suggesting they would filibuster and sink the bill to create a 9/11-style commission into the Capitol attack, Politico Playbook reports.

No. No, there is not.

Seriously, fuck him sideways all the way back to Charleston.

I know there’s a lot of pearl clutching when it comes to “what should dems do with manchin?” They’re doing this exactly right. They keep bringing stuff up for votes. They keep trying to negotiate with Republicans. Republicans don’t negotiate in good faith, and then in order to bring stuff to a halt, they’re not going to invoke cloture, which means nothing moves forward. Each one of these things is gonna eat at Joe Manchin. Give him a couple of months and he will be what is known in the cigarette-addicts society as a “reformed rake,” and they can turn out to be the most militant rakes in the barnyard.

A comprehensive free trade deal between the UK and Norway is at risk of collapsing as the Christian Democrat party fears such a pact would hit farmers in Scandinavia’s richest country too hard.

The Christian Democrats party (Krf), part of the current coalition government, plans to block opening up the Norwegian market to British beef and cheese, fearing non-tariff access would put many farmers in the country out of businesses, according to a Krf party insider.

They call it “constitutional carry” because of the way they intentionally misinterpret the 2nd amendment. There are a number of states that allow it. I helped keep Wisconsin requiring training when our CCW permit law was passed and I firmly believe it’s required to fit the “well regulated” clause; we can’t say no weapons but we can say you must know how to use them and otherwise be qualified. But our current SCOTUS won’t agree because they’ve been told not to.

It was much earlier, but I think he posted that his voice returned and that he and his wife were figuring out where he should go to get checked out. Then I got sidetracked with a backlog of unopened mail and balancing the checkbook, making dinner, and setting glue mouse traps all over the place. Not sure what’s happened since…

The concern is not about death rates . Death rates are not a consideration for the racists in Texas and elsewhere designing a society where a race war of attrition is the goal.

The new gun law is designed in Texas to eliminate or otherwise oppress vast swaths of the black and Latino population. Full stop.

It is designed to intimidate liberals into submission and racial minorities who think they will somehow be spared the hate meant for everyone not considered “white enough”.

This grand plan has been in the works for decades. It has been openly bandied about online since the internet broke wide in the 90’s. The broad acceptance of overt fascism in the Republican voting bloc now means the plan can finally be implemented.

And it still won’t be enough.

I believe it’s toxic feminity. These women “police” the idea of women, and it really jumps out at you once you notice. The few trans friends I have on Twitter seem to agree with this take.

One of the things I’ve noticed in homophobic men is that they are terrified that if gay men have equal rights they will treat them the way they have always treated women. I wonder if there isn’t a similar mechanic involved here?

Merrick Garland’s DOJ will appeal Judge Jackson’s order to release Barr’s memo about his decision not to prosecute Trump for Obstruction of Justice in the Mueller probe.

They’re going to let Trump, Barr, McGahn, Junior, Ivanka - the whole wretched lot of them walk.

It’s just like Obama letting Bush, Cheney, and the banksters off the hook in ‘09.

I’m sympathetic to the idea that feminists who want to do so can set up some women-only spaces in society. However, it seems extraordinarily difficult to do that in a way that is not intrinsically offensive to trans people, and the TERFs don’t appear to even be trying to avoid giving offense.

Are the refusing to release the memo because it is cogent to an investigation or indictment?

I’ve seen him a couple of times at the grocery store in Vail, it’s almost as if it’s fairly obvious that he’s trying to come off as unassuming, one can hardly blame him. One time I made eye contact in the checkout line and threw him a rock on with my hand, he smiled and nodded.

He has a house on Forest Road. Very expensive.

TFG who was fucking president of the fucking united fucking states four months ago is a totally delusional lunatic:

“As massive crime in the 2020 Election is becoming more and more evident and obvious, Brnovich is nowhere to be found. He is always on television promoting himself, but never mentions the Crime of the Century, that took place during the 2020 Presidential Election, which was Rigged and Stolen.”

this about an R running for senate in AZ
