Former Guy Shuts Down Horrible Blog Because Nobody Was Visiting and Everybody Was Mocking Him

Politics • Views: 18,742

And now, some great news to start your news day: Donald Trump permanently shuts down blog month after launching.

Trump rolled out the blog last month after being absent from social media since January, but his effort to regain some of the attention he received with his headline-grabbing tweets largely failed. An adviser told The Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey that the former president wanted to open a new “platform” and didn’t like that this platform was being mocked and had so few readers.

I admit I never visited Trump’s blog, but I saw excerpts posted on Twitter and it was truly awful. The same old garbage he used to tweet, except he had no character limits and could create giant walls of unreadable narcissistic gibberish with no paragraph breaks.

It was really bad, but now it’s gone. Like his presidency, but quicker.

I don’t know if anyone has explained to her that a lawmaker’s job is, literally, to change the fucking rules?

I don’t know what this is, unless she’s so scared of fucking up that she refuses to do anything. It’s like lawful stupid as an alignment.

More people went to his domain today than were going on an average day to see his blog posts - to see what was no longer there.

It was a colossal failure, which is odd since overwhelming majority of GOP in Congress has bent the knee and pledged fealty to support/aid/covering up Trump crimes as though Trump has real power and support. Guess lack of interaction and support from social media has real effect. Parler isn’t driving traffic.

He’s banned from other platforms, and the first wave of plea deals from 1/6 are being announced today.

Guy he pardoned was talking about having a coup like Myanmar did, and he’s continued surrounding himself with the worst people in the world.

The blog failed in under 3 Scaramuccis. Heck, my old blogspot went on for … checks notes… almost 2 decades.

It would be better to get a human involved early where software can easily flag the shady reports for review.

Analysis-Politicking general puts Bolsonaro at odds with army leaders

Pilloried for his failed stint as Brazil’s health minister and caught in the crosshairs of a Senate probe on the pandemic, General Eduardo Pazuello sought refuge last week before a friendly audience at a political rally in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello attend a rally at the National Monument to the Dead of World War II in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, May 23, 2021. REUTERS/Stringer
With President Jair Bolsonaro’s arm draped over his shoulder, the active-duty general and former minister grabbed a microphone — and quickly turned his personal crisis into an institutional one.

By violating a ban on politicking by military officers, Pazuello has invited possible punishment from the armed forces or embarrassment for their commanders, say former generals and military scholars.

In Brazil, officers may take on civil government roles as a secondment, but they are forbidden from engaging in political activity or openly stating their party membership or political views.

In the 10 days since Pazuello drew cheers at that rally alongside the president, the army has remained silent.

On Tuesday, Bolsonaro named Pazuello “secretary of strategic studies,” a senior role in the presidential palace, months after replacing him as health minister during a deadly COVID-19 surge.

For military brass concerned that the armed forces are too entangled with an unpopular government and its shaky handling of the pandemic, Pazuello’s case is a canary in the coal mine. The president’s embrace of the brazenly political general suggests that for some officers allegiance to Bolsonaro is starting to trump military protocol.

I do think there’s some fear that if you eliminate the filibuster, the next time the GOP controls both chambers and the presidency, there is going to be a shitton of very bad legislation getting passed. And the way our system works, it will take at a minimum 2-4 years to undo that bad shit - which makes it harder to do good shit once you’re elected.

I also think there’s a class of politician today that isn’t actually interested in doing the hard work of governing (this, I think, includes the vast majority of the Republican Senate caucus). I don’t know if Sinema falls into that category, but if the filibuster goes away, I can see a lot of people who are currently in elected office no longer liking the job because not everything dies in the Senate and they’re going to have to take actual hard votes on stuff that they will then be held responsible for.

Personally, I still think the answer is going back to a “real” standing/talking filibuster rather than the stupidity of the current cloture vote system.

Glenn Greenwald got charged on some trumped up charges of cell phone hacking by Bolsonaro’s goons — also, his husband, David Miranda is now a Brazilian congressman from (I believe) a left wing splinter of Lula da Silva’s party. I suspect he’ll be fine there if Bolsonaro goes away.

Rep. Gozar should be turned over to the Ethics Committee.

Woodrow Johnston, the vice president of McShane LLC, a consultancy that had been hired by the party to investigate electoral fraud, wrote on Nov. 4 to Sarah Ashton-Cirillo in a Facebook Messenger chat, telling her that Rep. Paul A. Gosar (R-Ariz.), one of his firm’s clients, was preparing a “Brooks Brothers Riot” in Arizona. That was a reference to the Republican protests that disrupted vote counting in Florida after the 2000 presidential election.

“We might need to do the same here in Nevada,” Johnston wrote, according to copies of the correspondence given to The Washington Post by Ashton-Cirillo, the authenticity of which Johnston did not contest. “Which means we need to get the Proud Boys out.”

I keep wondering where this faith that if the filibuster is left alone by Dems, Repubs will continue to reciprocate comes from. Perhaps it’s because it’s become obvious in recent years that Repubs don’t feel constrained by the filibuster anymore, that what they can’t pass through legislation they just sit on their hands and allow a Repub pres to put in place through EOs and agency directives/policies. For example, the continued abuse of the 2001 AUMF to justify whatever overseas operations the WH wishes to conduct without official Congressional oversight or approval.

You are right about this. The way the Senate operates now could be a driving force in the potential collapse of the system. I don’t believe the filibuster as it exists is a good thing but rather it should be trashed. I was only saying I understand some of the reasoning for not wanting to abandon it.

I’m not entirely sure Republicans, in the Senate at least, actually want to pass legislation. I think most of them are smart enough to know that their purported agenda is incredibly unpopular and passing it would likely mean most of them are out of office the next time they’re up for election. I think they’re actually mostly fine with the status quo because it allows them the pretense of doing something without the consequences of actually doing it

The counter-argument to “Repubs don’t want to really pass legislation because they wouldn’t get reelected” should be pretty obvious by now: They don’t think the voters should have a real say over who controls the government. If they can succeed in putting who they want in the WH, then odds are they have the power at the state level to put whoever they want in Congress as well. And at that point, it doesn’t matter how unpopular their legislation is, there’s no real political danger to enacting it over voter disapproval.

re: #69 Targetpractice

I keep wondering where this faith that if the filibuster is left alone by Dems, Repubs will continue to reciprocate comes from. Perhaps it’s because it’s become obvious in recent years that Repubs don’t feel constrained by the filibuster anymore, that what they can’t pass through legislation they just sit on their hands and allow a Repub pres to put in place through EOs and agency directives/policies. For example, the continued abuse of the 2001 AUMF to justify whatever overseas operations the WH wishes to conduct without official Congressional oversight or approval.

It’s basically that the filibuster has a conservative bias. Progressives have an ambitious agenda for government to accomplish, and conservatives just want to cut taxes, which they can do through reconciliation, because they don’t believe in government, and if they abolish the filibuster, the legislation genie is out of the bottle for the next time the Democrats are in power.

“Sometimes, the friend of your friend is still your enemy, and the enemy of your enemy is also your enemy”

Obviously Greenwald is not in alignment politically with Bolsonaro, just as he is not in alignment with the GOP in this country. Bolsonaro, after all, is a crazed homophobic fascist who praised the torture and detention of alleged leftists during the 1964-85 dictatorship.
Bolsonaro does seem to be obliged to put up with him, though. That could change even (perhaps especially) if the replacement is another fascist.

That depends on what you define as “the children aren’t in much danger.”

There are three children in my town who are now orphans because their thirty-something parents both died of Covid-19. (For some reason the state has been really slow at identifying their next-of-kin, so they are still staying with another family in town as a temporary foster family, with help from others in town).

This is a league that is nearly 70% African American, but only a handful of coaches, let alone management, are African American.

If it protected our democracy, it wouldn’t be stopping legislation aimed at letting more people vote.

It’s the Senate itself that is an obstacle to progress and democracy. After all, technically, a majority of the Senate can reflect fewer than 20% of the voters of this nation and, that means, theoretically 10% of the voters can stop what the other 90% want (e.g. a Senator wins with 50.5% of the vote — so only half the voters in the state support them). The Senate and the Electoral College are dooming this nation.

Is Bibi toast yet?

Minutes before midnight and the clock running out, it’s official - Bibi is effectively toast.

Ynet: Lapid Informs Rivlin He Has Succeeded in Forming a Government

An amalgam of parties from across the political spectrum reached agreement Wednesday night to form a government that spells the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12 years as prime minister.

Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid struck deals with his partners in the so-called coalition for change with less than an hour to go before a midnight deadline that would have seen the mandate for forming a government return to President Reuven Rivlin and likely sent Israel into its fifth round of elections since April 2019. For the first time in Israeli history, the coalition agreement includes an Arab party.

Lapid called Rivlin with minutes to spare to inform him that he had successfully put together a government. Rivlin congratulated Lapid, saying that he expects Knesset to convene as soon as possible to vote to ratify the government.

It’s a done deal. Only thing that he can do now is delay the inevitable by a week via his top parliamentary crony. And his top crony can be replaced with a parliamentary vote that’s almost certainly gonna happen.

My doctor noted that I am down 8 lbs from the last time I was in her office, over a year ago. I’ve also started taking daily half-hour walks around my town to get some exercise in, since I seem to have plateaued in my weight loss and I still technically have like 30 lbs to go to get under the “obese” line.

About 5 years ago, I finally noticed all the weight I’d put on since college. I maxed out over 270 lbs, I was one tubby sumbitch. I immediately lost 55 lbs, gained about 15 back, and hovered around 240 all the way up until this year, when I finally re-instituted (permanently) my dietary restrictions, getting me the ~10 lbs down. And now the walking.

Although my weight is considerably lower than others here, my weight did climb about 10% over what it usually is (that way it sound more than if I cited my weight gain in pounds).

I’ve been walking more to reduce that back to my normal weight.

The ship sank less than five miles from the shore. It is carrying nitric acid and hazardous cargoes. Some of Sri Lanka’s most pristine beaches have been fouled with pollution.

The article includes photographs.

Fears of environmental disaster as oil-laden ship sinks off Sri Lanka (BBC, five hours ago)

A chemical-laden cargo ship is sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka, sparking fears of an environmental disaster.

The Singapore-registered X-Press Pearl had been on fire for almost two weeks before the blaze was put out this week.

Hundreds of tonnes of oil from fuel tanks could leak into the sea, devastating nearby marine life.

The Sri Lankan and Indian navies had worked jointly over the past days in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent the ship from breaking up and sinking.

But rough seas and monsoonal winds hampered the operation, just outside the port of Colombo.

“Salvors are trying to tow the ship to deep sea before it sinks to minimise the marine pollution, but the rear area of the ship has drifted,” Sri Lanka Navy spokesman Captain Indika Silva told the BBC. The stern appeared to be resting on the seabed.

My metabolism has always been blistering. I went to the doctors for something back in like 2005 and I weighed something like 118 pounds. I’m 5’11” and that scared the hell out of them. They spent most of the office visit doing the “stabby hands” around my belly trying to find the liver cancer or the colon cancer, to no luck. I finally did tell them when I cottoned on to what was bothering them that 140 was really the top I’d ever managed, and that was during my cycling days. Now of course I noted with alarm that I was 170 and that I am definitely not a 32/32 in the pants anymore. I did manage to lose roughly 3 pounds over the last week or so, but I’ve decided I really do like ice cream in the evenings, and I doubt that’s going to help shed pounds.

It has been about two months since I saw the VA ophthalmologist. During that visit, he did the standard “let’s paralise your irises so we can see your retinas better” eyedrops.

Weirdly, by the next day, my brown irises were slowly recovering, but they had a narrow bright blue ring around them.

My wife commented my eyes looked weird yesterday. I took a look in a mirror. The thin blue ring is now about 1/4 of each iris, and the dark brown is now almost tan.
