No red counties left in Kentucky, but many green ones as the pandemic ebbs thanks to the vaccines.

So you all might remember me commenting about going to a Alpaca ranch this summer. The Name of the ranch is The Tenacious Unicorn Ranch. A documentary about the ranch drops next year. Here’s a trailer for it. CW/TW: They are very pro firearms & self defense and for a very good reason. Behind the tag for those not interested.

There is a rancher just west of town who raises alpacas.

Once in a while in the county newspaper crime report, there will be entries for “deputies dispatched to wrangle alpacas on US-26.”

(Wrangling livestock is most of what our sheriff’s department does.)

I keep getting these stupid calls disguised on caller ID as some person’s name or a medical facility. When I say hello a recorded message is telling me that I am in legal trouble and to hold on for a fraud officer to take my information. If I decline, officers will be dispatched to my house. I hang up of course and block the number, but it’s annoying. Both numbers appear to be the same person from the little bit I could find online. I have no idea what the scam is, but some sort of fuckery is afoot.

There’s just a new round of spam/scam calls going around. Recently, they even started a couple of group texts, which got me really mad because there’s no way to opt out of a group text (at least on an iPhone), and so at random hours of the day my phone would blow up with people stupidly replying “STOP” to the original text. I wanted to tell them, “You’re just confirming your phone number is active to these bastards,” but that would’ve done the same thing to my number.

Way old scam. They want you to send “money”, usually prepaid debit cards or gift cards to stop enforcement actions.

[Nominally] interesting programming on local ABC (though not, IMHO, worth preempting Jeopardy! for) a debate with eight of the gang of candidates for NYC Mayor in this fall’s election. My first thought that they were just a gang of idiots, and watching would be a waste: but - and I will congratulate myself on changing my mind: I mean, they’re still a gang of idiots; but it was useful to get a handle on the inadequacies of the various candidates.
At least one decision was easy: I’m NOT going to vote for Andrew Yang…..

I see they’re on the front page at NPR.

There’s a 6-foot-tall fence going up around the Tenacious Unicorn Ranch in rural Custer County, Colo. The people who live there say they need it because they’ve been the target of harassment since they relocated the trans-friendly ranch there in 2020.

The perimeter fence will add security to the ranch, which also has newly installed security cameras. There’s a tension on the property, so much so that co-owner Penny Logue and fellow owner Bonnie Nelson, both transgender women, carry pistols at all times. One wall of the communal geodesic-dome ranch house is stocked with various assault weapons.

“There’s some degree where we want that [militaristic] perspective,” Nelson said. “All we want is to be left alone.”

There are a number of videos on YouTube of people trolling such callers.

There are also those who specialise in the ones who call you up and say there’s something wrong with your computer and ask you to start Windows Remote Assistance so they can “help” you.

Those counter-criminals have tools to take over that person’s computer as they are setting up Remote Assistance, doing things like erasing critical files or even locking them out of their computer by setting a master log-in password then restarting the computer.

There is a whole community dedicated to baiting scammers. I use that word intentionally because they call themselves “scambaiters”. Their origins lie in the deep history of the Internet with the Nigerian email scams, known as “419 scams” after Section 419 of the Nigerian penal code, which addresses such scams.

Yep. The RW nut jobs stirred up a hornets nest when they pulled their shit. The LBGT LGBT+ Communities & Allies all pulled together and provided both material & financial resources* to the ranch. There were some who went out to the ranch for the sole purpose of defending it. That was not something the rwnj’s expected. Nor did they expect the negative impression that such a move would leave in the area as the ranch is actually pretty well regarded. At this time they have seemed to back off. But, sadly, that can change at any time. And if it does, well we don’t abandon our sisters, we’ll go back if needed.

* I will proudly say I gave both. Materials ordered from Amazon & delivered to the ranch as well as cash to help feed the volunteers. That’s how much I believe in this place.

The obvious solution to that little problem is for Chauvin to serve his time (preferably a lengthy prison sentence) in solitary.

re: #52 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Now, if you aren’t watching the video, you are probably imagining that the person speaking is some kind of cartoonish combination of Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady” and the reanimated rotting corpse of stupid dead Phyllis Schlafly. But no, it appears to be a younger person named Kara McKinney. We don’t know what happened to her to make her this way, cringing about the “grossy itty-bitty degenerate details” of everybody else’s naughty nookies. But here she is.

Apparently she thinks the “pride” in the seven deadly sins refers to “gay pride.” So she’s not the brightest star on OAN.

Speaking of bright stars, McKinney’s guest was Jesse Lee Peterson, a 72-year-old Black pastor and professional wingnut who last appeared on Wonkette when he was ASTOUNDED to learn that men go down on ladies’ crotch bits WITH THEIR MOUTHS. He said “men should not be doing that because it’s like eating out of a trash can.”

He said, “You have the dirt coming out, blood, other people’s sex stuff, disease, and y’all eat it out?” He was also horrified to learn that womenfolk also do those things to men with their own mouths. “I asked the women if there were many women who knew about this and I was stunned at the answer. I thought it was like a slut thing! I didn’t know normal women do that to men.” His friends reassured him that all women are sluts.

Peterson did not know all these things were so popular! He said later in the segment in question that women are not supposed to be having orgasms. “Any woman that’s climaxing is becoming a man, because it’s not normal for a woman to do that.” Got that? Orgasms? Not normal. Dirt coming out of the vaginas? That’s just how it works!

There’s no way a major party nominee skips the debates. First, it’s free tv to talk directly to voters. Second, if they don’t go there is going to be a week or two of “why are they hiding?” stories and mockery on the internet that will swallow up their ability to do any sort of campaigning. Every stop, every interview, every town hall will feature a “why won’t you debate your opponent? What are you afraid of?” question.

What I want to know about the Trumps is assets - liabilities. Given Trump’s demonstrated lack of business acumen (including bankrupting casinos and the single largest business loss tax write-off of all time) I think it reasonable to assume that his net worth is actually rather pitiful, and that Trump is permitted by his creditors to LARP as a rich guy only to improve their chances of getting paid because new marks get swindled.

It’s another instance of the old story: If you owe $50k to the bank that you can’t pay, you have a problem. If you owe $50 million to the bank that you can’t pay, the bank has a problem.

Not really false. As I remember it, at the beginning of the Pandemic they said they were going to stop paying rent. I think it was a ploy to get their landlords to negotiate (plus perhaps they got some govt funds). Not sure if all the factories will remain open.

Yeah: I’ve always thought the old saw about Trump running for President mainly/solely to protect himself from legal liabilities relating to his shaky, scam-riddled finances wasn’t really a joke. I have considered this to be the sober truth for years now.

I could have sworn I saw somewhere (probably Ravelry-a site for fiber people) that the ranch was moving up to northern CO? Where they are now looks kind of marginal for all that livestock.

When I was young, I wanted to be a musician. My dad had me talk with a number of great musicians, who all advised against it.

Having said that, he supported my goals and did what he could to help. As I got older, I had the opportunity to perform with some amazing musicians, whose shear talent blew me away.

I got mumps after entering college and lost hearing in one ear. Which basically put an end to my ambitions.

Since then, I’ve thought alot about the advice I was given early on. I observed that some of the phenomenal musicians I’d performed with were never successful or recognized. And I was advised that talent alone wasn’t enough. It appears that was good advice.

The point being there are a lot of great players out there who are barely scraping by.

Long and short of the Chauvin defense filing is that they’re asking for probation because the lack of a criminal record basically obligates them to, but their real hope is that the judge will buy into their plea that Derek’s gonna die in jail unless he gets a wrist-slap sentence way shorter than the mandated minimum. And they want the judge to wrap all three convictions together when doing the sentencing, so that Derek can be out just that much quicker.

Veteran’s microphone cut off when he discusses Blacks’ role in establishing Memorial Day

What at first blush appeared to be a short audio malfunction at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony in Markillie Cemetery turned out to be anything but.

A ceremony organizer turned off the microphone when the event’s keynote speaker, retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter, began sharing a story about freed Black slaves honoring deceased soldiers shortly after the end of the Civil War.

The microphone was turned down for about two minutes in the middle of Kemter’s 11-minute speech during the event hosted by the Hudson American Legion Lee-Bishop Post 464.

Cindy Suchan, who chairs the Memorial Day parade committee and is president of the Hudson American Legion Auxiliary, said it was either her or Jim Garrison, adjutant of American Legion Lee-Bishop Post 464, who turned down the audio. When pressed, she would not say who specifically did it.

Suchan said organizers wanted this part excluded because it “was not relevant to our program for the day,” and added the “theme of the day was honoring Hudson veterans.”

So the asshats are going with the “He persisted” defense, saying they asked Lt Col Ketmer to revise the speech and only cut the mic when they realized he had not done so.

Lt Col Ketmer says they asked for a “revision” less than 24 hours before he was to speak, sent him a copy with the “revisions” that did not show the sections they wanted changed highlighted as indicated, and he felt he lacked the time to properly write a new speech before his appearance.

Even if I had reason to question Lt Col Ketmer’s version of events (I don’t), it was still incumbent upon the people asking for revisions to speak with him before he approached the podium to make sure he’d made them. If they let him step up to the mic without knowing what he was going to say, then that’s on them and shows piss-poor management.

It seems to me that the soundtrack to a show is often more central to success than some may assume.

Debris was a total failure in this regard.

And this is where 1960’s (American) TV shows shined often - the producers hired some top composers for themes.

One of the leading companies on supersonic aircraft went belly up this week, and others are struggling. Boom has a demonstrator test plane that they’ll be flying later this year, and the production plane is supposed to have 55 passengers, which is about half that of the Concorde. Size matters. United is betting that there’s a market for first class high speed flight point to point.

If they manage to overcome the sonic boom over land, then it opens up flight to more destinations and cross-country flights. Noise is one of the factors that severely limited Concorde destinations.

Today’s electoral-vote.com

the FEC concluded that Pecker coordinated with the Trump campaign because Pecker had contact with Trump’s then-fixer, now jailbird, Michael Cohen. Cohen told Pecker that the company would be reimbursed. Cohen pleaded guilty to this offense (among others) and was sent to prison for it. So far, Trump himself has escaped any form of punishment for this campaign finance violation. The FEC considered taking action against Trump, but the Republicans on the Commission blocked all action saying that pursing the matter was not the best use of agency resources. Actually, the whole purpose of the FEC is to enforce election law.

Common Cause vice president Paul S. Ryan (not the politician) noted that all the people who did the dirty work for Trump have been punished, but Trump, who masterminded the scheme has walked. The Dept. of Justice could yet take action against Trump, but it has to move fast since the statute of limitations on this expires in August.

SCOTUS decisions dropping today.

First up: Van Buren v US. Misuse of computer systems by a cop to search LEO databases for money. An individual “exceeds authorized access” when he accesses a computer with authorization but then obtains information located in particular areas of the computer—such as files, folders, or databases—
that are off-limits to him. Barrett opinion, joined by Breyer, Sotomayor, Kagan, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh. Thomas wrote dissent, joined by Roberts and Alito.

Surprising mix. Gorsuch is somewhat unpredictable — but Barrett and Kavanuagh are unexpected. I was originally surprised by Roberts — but then, decided that he is a real fan of unconstrained police power, along with his clear fondness for voter suppression.

So it looks like United thinks it can make money on this. Apparently target service date is 2029, so I wouldn’t try booking your tickets yet.

Looks like they aren’t waiting for the results of the NASA X-59 sonic boom reduction project so they must only be planning to fly supersonic over the oceans. Tickets are going to be obscenely expensive to hit breakeven if that’s the case as the Concord showed. These will either never go into service with United or the trips become a Veblen good and only the very rich will indulge in them.

He owns a plan that is currently rotting at an Orange County NY airport because he can’t afford to fly it and do necessary repairs. There’s no way he’s buying a supersonic jet that would be even more expensive to buy and operate, even though he’d get prestige and status from doing so.

Expect the MAGAts to go nuts over this:

The U.S. Justice Department has reportedly launched an investigation into Blue Star Strategies, a consulting firm linked to President Joe Biden’s son, for potential illegal lobbying.

Hunter Biden sat on the board of Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company that was one of Blue Star’s clients. According to Politico, the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s Office is involved in the probe, as are lawyers in the National Security Division at the Justice Department’s Washington headquarters. The Delaware office is also investigating Hunter Biden for potential tax violations, the news outlet said.

Blue Star Strategies is a Washington lobbying and public affairs firm that also has offices in Brussels, Buenos Aires, Paris and Vienna.

The reported probe comes as Hunter Biden, who served on the board of Burisma from 2014-2019, has denied any wrongdoing with his work for the energy company, despite claims from former President Donald Trump and his allies there was a conflict of interest with his father serving as vice president in the Barack Obama administration.

Considering that pace of vaccination in US has slowed considerably, and supply is pretty plentiful in the US, delivering doses to other countries to help them get the vaccination rates up is a huge deal. The pandemic isn’t over just because the US has vaccinated.

Oh, and China has managed to massively expand their vaccination efforts in May. They’ve now gotten more than 700 million doses out, more than half of that in May. While the US is slowing down in vaccinations, China is accelerating their vaccination efforts.

The problem is that there are many other countries that are seriously lagging, due in large part to lack of access to vaccines in the first place. That’s particularly true for Africa and Central/South America. India is a known vaccination provider, but they’re still dealing with being overwhelmed by cases and lack of raw materials for vaccination production.

Just finished Jim Davidson’s Everest book ,The Next Everest. He was on the mountain during the 2015 Nepalese earthquake that killed 19 people in base camp and thousands more throughout the country. He came back in 2017 and summitted this time and described the same problems of people forced to wait for slower climbers. On the way to the summit, he mentions seeing 3 bodies including one that died the previous day.

Pictures like this one show how crazy the touristization of the mountain has become. I hope the guide companies have become more responsible since ‘96, but I kind of doubt it. There’s too much money in it to turn away those that shouldn’t be there.

Stitt makes a lot of space for anti-vax sentiment, saying it should be a personal choice rather than a public health issue.

“They both have given all their children various vaccinations required for school and recommended by doctors,” the fact check said. “They both do not support changing current state law on mandated vaccines. They both believe these decisions should be made by the parent in consultation with doctors.”

The Tulsa-area private school that Stitt’s children have attended reported the highest rate of vaccine exemptions for kindergarteners in the state, at 24%, according to 2017-18 survey data from the state health department. The statewide rate was 2.2%, although many private schools declined to report.

I can testify that it’s easy to stay cheaply in Vegas as well (a $40 resort fee doesn’t mean as much if the base fee is $65). There are plenty of places to go and things to see that don’t cost anything like that.

I have (and drink) a lot of cheap booze at home, for precisely this reason. If I’m having drinks out somewhere, where I’m using restraint and drinking to enjoy, then I order nicer stuff.

Yeah, it tends to be slick and inelastic compared to sheep’s wool. That said it is also lovely.
I think it’s odd that they don’t give sizes on at least some of their skeins (neither weight nor yardage) on their website. I’m sure you could ask, but I didn’t since I’m not in the market currently. The Bay Area just isn’t so cold that I need more cozy knits than I already have.

I had a co-worker at a former company who would only drink Tito’s. We kept a handle of Tito’s behind the bar specifically for that reason. I had a few Tito’s and Cokes, and it was pretty good, but not such a standout that I would buy it on the regular.

OOPS! Looks like the Moron Church marks are embracing Trump just like every other cult!

A couple weeks back, there was a fair amount written highlighting the degree to which different faiths believed — or didn’t believe — the notion that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were near the top, with 46% nationwide believing the unsubstantiated conspiracy theories blaming widespread election fraud.

Nearly four out of five Trump voters in Utah believe the election was stolen from the ex-president, which includes some political independents and a whopping 71% of self-identified members of the Republican Party.

I have some control. I’ll admit, when I first started drinking, I was trying to drink through my depression, and that did NOT WORK. I managed to pull it back from the brink, and nowadays, while, yes, I still drink a fair amount, I feel like it’s by choice (I don’t feel like I “have” to drink) and I also have clear plans to stop drinking and go to bed.

I can’t drink a shot, a beer or wine due to Humira, blood thinners and metformin.

I’d be curious what the job distribution looked like geographically. I think something like 25 states terminated the enhanced unemployment last month. If the job gains were evenly distributed despite that then I’d say it is pretty clear unemployment benefits had nothing to do with it.

I had to take several nutrition classes at Kaiser where we were told the most we can eat is half a banana. As for fruit we were told eat fruit but stay away from all fruit juices except V8 and we have to limit the number of tomato slices in a salad since tomatoes are considered a fruit.

It’s obviously comparing bananas and grapes, which just sounds more interesting than apples and oranges, but I’d expect grape juice to have a lot more sugar.

I don’t think my friend is on insulin yet, which is probably the big difference. He has no way to compensate for more sugar intake.

During one conversation this week, a reader chastised us for not reporting about the dangers of COVID-19 vaccines. She scolded us for not reporting “the other side.” And while a classic textbook definition of journalism is getting all sides to a story, not all sides should be afforded equal weight. That doesn’t set well with many folks, but it’s the truth. Journalists aren’t stenographers and their obligation is to the truth, as best it can be ascertained. And yet that means that we must make reasonable judgments about facts, their context, and must be able to support what we write by credible, accepted sources.
