Talk of high school in the last thread reminded me of this now pleasant memory: in French class two girls in the row in front of me were passing notes (yes, they used to do that) and when one dropped the note the teacher asked who dropped it. I quickly said “I did.” The teacher took the note off the floor and without opening it, put it on her desk, then continued with class. She clearly knew I had nothing to do with it. I’m convinced that that’s why I got an A and not the usual B, which I deserved.

Punish Domestic Terrorists  Jun 3, 2021 • 2:26:17pm

It should be pointed out that Greenwald has been manufacturing outrage for decades. The left stopped buying, but the right is fully addicted to the stuff and can’t be happy without it, so he went where the customers are. The Intercept brought him in when he had already been dishonest for decades.

I really hate Microsoft Edge.

That said, in the latest trials and tribulations of Firefox not working correctly, the comment edit box buttons here don’t show up, and “Post It” doesn’t work.

So breaking down and using the overly-promiscuous Edge, I shamelessly direct you to a new article at the right-hand column of LGF:

Have you tried the Brave browser?

I have not heard of it. I went to read about it, and note that it seems to help fund cryptocurrency scamming, and I’m not interested in supporting Peter Theil:

Brave uses its Basic Attention Token (BAT) to drive revenue. Originally incorporated in Delaware as Hyperware Labs, Inc. in 2015, the company later changed its name to Brave Software, Inc. and registered in California, where it is headquartered.[23]

By August 2016, the company had received at least US$7 million in angel investments from venture capital firms, including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, Propel Venture Partners, Pantera Capital, Foundation Capital, and the Digital Currency Group.

In November 2019, Brave launched Brave Ads, an ad network which returns a 70% revenue share to users.[25] Ad clients included the company’s partners like Vice, Home Chef, ConsenSys, eToro and others.[25]

Features
Basic Attention Token

Basic Attention Token logo
The “Basic Attention Token” (BAT) is an open-source, decentralized ad exchange platform based on Ethereum.

In an initial coin offering on 31 May 2017, Brave Software International SEZC sold 1,000,000,000 BAT for a total of 156,250 Ethereum (US$35M) in less than 30 seconds. An additional 500,000,000 BAT was retained by the company, to be used to promote the adoption of the platform.

In early December 2017, the company disbursed the first round of its ‘user growth pool’ grants: a total of 300,000 BAT was distributed to new users on a first-come first-served basis.

In case you’ve ever wondered why professional chess players are known as Grandmasters, the title was originally bestowed on players at the 1914 St. Petersburg chess tournament by the tsar, so there was a vaguely masonic quality to it all. I recently acquired a replica of one of the tournament sets, though the black set was not red stained. I just haven’t had a red stained set in a long while and kind of like it, so I chose that. Yes, I do suffer from Chess Set Acquisition Syndrome. We meet as a group on Wednesdays. Not to try to get clean, you understand. Just to gloat over new sets.

Jennifer Rubin: “I have argued that Democrats put H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, first.”

“However, there is a separate measure not included in either bill that could go far to improve ballot access: Requiring that no voter has to wait in line to vote for more than 30 minutes.”

“Reduction of wait times should theoretically be agreeable to both parties and all voters. It has nothing to do with ‘voter security,’ and everything to do with eliminating barriers to voting.”

when you get into the weeds there would be issues with enforcement and probably other things

and of course the R’s dont really want to make voting easier

though it could be interesting to see how they’d pretzel logic theirselves objecting to the idea

Re: Last thread’s discussion of drones as civilian weapons.

There is quite a bit of well-informed speculation about this in the darkest corners of the web. It is one reason I think the goober terrorists will be massacred if they actually launch the shooting war for which they lust.
There is more to this than their ignorance of how real warfare, especially insurgent warfare, is conducted.
They are completely uninterested in any method of combat other than personal small arms. This attitude is profoundly embedded in their worldview and lifestyle. I believe that rationalizing the opportunity to use their guns is one of their most important motives for adopting the crackpot doctrines and conspiracy theories they publicly represent as their motivation.
The psycho-sexual penis extender cart is drawing the batshit horse.
They are therefore incapable of adjusting their methods when those methods fail. THE METHOD IS THE MOTIVE. If survivors see that guns have only a subsidiary role (which has been the case in military combat for centuries) there will be no reason to fight and they will quit.

Let’s hope this is the political kiss-of-death.

Donald Trump endorses Gov. Greg Abbott for reelection (June 1, 2021, Texas Tribune)

The endorsement comes before the Texas GOP Primary, where another candidate has already declared (former state senator Don Huffines) and others are considering declaring.

Trump has managed to upend party primaries before: It is not normal for the nominal party leader to endorse one candidate over another.

re: #71 EPR-radar

It looks like the drug companies’ embargo on selling death penalty drugs to death penalty states is remarkably effective at highlighting the essential barbarism of capital punishment.

States can still get them.

Last month, the Guardian revealed that Arizona spent a jaw-dropping $1.5m on a batch of pentobarbital in October, a sedative which it now hopes to use as its main lethal injection method.

Pentobarbital is one of the drugs used to arrest status epilepticus (seizures which won’t stop), meaning Arizona is putting people with epilepsy in danger of having another important drug cut off.

Barbiturates are all prescription drugs and controlled substances. Whycome killer states don’t have to follow the law?

They also need brutes for the gas chamber job. Aside from using frickin’ candles to test to see if the chamber is properly sealed, you get this.

The documents record how prison staff engaged in role play during last year’s tests. Guards acted out as inmates who resisted going to their death, screaming: “This is murder”, “I’m innocent”, “You’re putting me down like an animal”, and “This is against everything America stands for”.

Not only that, for the gas chamber protocol, Arizona is breaking its own law. The specification is for sodium cyanide, but they bought a brick of potassium cyanide (which might not work correctly in the chamber, torturing the prisoner).

But since when did conservatives give a fuque either about the law or cruelty?

As a Catholic, I’m curious to know if the Biden-Harris Embassy in the Holy See will promote respect for Catholic teaching on family and freedom of conscience - or whether we can simply expect more political stunts like this.

I’m curious to know if Gov Ricketts will promote respect for Catholic teaching on health care, environmental protection, immigration, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless. You know, the stuff Jesus actually talked about. A lot.

Or is Gov Ricketts more of a Paulian than a Christian, and he only cares about the issues that Paul obsessed over after Jesus wasn’t around to say anything more to anyone about anything.

The reason Arizona changed to lethal injection:

Arizona’s first gas chamber execution in seven years took 18 minutes before the condemned man’s heart flat-lined at 9:30 last night.

That’s seven minutes more than it took death row inmate Don Harding to die by cyanide poisoning on April 6, 1992.

Harding’s gruesome death prompted a change in law to allow inmates who committed murder before 1992 to chose between the gas chamber and lethal injection.

Governor Ricketts cares about none of that. He cares about power and money. He is a good living argument that religion does not make you a moral person though.

That massive amount of Pentobarbital that Arizona bought was also illegal to sell to the state; it is blocked to states with the death penalty by the owner of the drug, Danish firm Lundbeck.

The only way Arizona could have obtained it was by the state committing a crime.

87% of my state is now vaccinated against Covid-19, which is pretty phenomenal considering some of the problems we had to overcome (Trump, Ricketts, lack of infrastructure in rural areas to store the Pfizer vaccine, lack of Internet service across large swaths of the state, lack of distribution networks outside of hospitals when some counties don’t even have a nurse, &c). We should top 1,700,000 people vaccinated this week (out of 1.9 million people).

Next door in Wyoming it’s YOLO for them.

It’s so hard to get a picture of my cat Nicki because she just doesn’t like her picture taken, but she was acting like a speedbump on the floor this afternoon, so I whipped out my phone and snapped a few pictures and actually got her purring and meowing before she decided she’d had quite enough. Here’s one of the pics.

Nicki has been with me since October 2012, she was picked up as a semi-feral kitty being fed by kids at an elementary school. She’s warmed up a lot over the years, to the point where if she REALLY wants something out of me and I’m still in bed, she will climb on top of me. It took a long time for her to trust me. (On the other hand, she loves my brother, because she knows he will bring bacon over when he visits.)

The town hall will take place from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center, located at 908 Yellowstone Avenue in Alliance.

This is self-immolation. He’s making damn sure that the voting machine companies destroy him completely.

Pillow magnate Mike Lindell is trying to re-litigate the election with a second lawsuit against voting machine companies involved in the 2020 presidential race.

The Minnesota MAGA enthusiast filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday alleging that voting technology companies Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic engaged in a racketeering conspiracy “to suppress free speech and extort silence from dissenters.”

Dominion sued Lindell’s company, MyPillow Inc, for defamation and demanded $1.6 billion after Lindell leveled a series of false allegations about the company’s voting software in the wake of the 2020 election. Defamation suits by Smartmatic and Dominion, Lindell claims, amount to a racketeering conspiracy to suppress the wild accusations about the companies’ products.

Such lovely people.

JUNE 3—A 70-year-old Ohio man who told cops he was a “Trump man” confessed to repeatedly urinating and defecating in front of a neighbor’s home because the residents “are Democrats and support Joe Biden,” according to a police report.

Jerry Detrick, the accused septuagenarian serial pooper, was cited Sunday for littering after the homeowner caught him in the act around 3:15 AM in Greenville, a western Ohio city.

Investigators say that Matthew Guyette called 911 after spotting a man squatting down and relieving himself near a privet hedge outside the home Guyette, 59, shares with his husband. Upon being confronted by Guyette, the suspect got up and walked away from the property.

Based on a description provided by Guyette, police subsequently identified Detrick, a retired high school teacher, as a suspect in the predawn pooping.

GOP asked undercover activist to ‘recruit’ the Proud Boys to interfere with the 2020 election: report

A transgender poker player and progressive activist who went undercover and cozied up to right-wing extremists. A state Republican party desperate to see Donald Trump win. A Vegas-based GOP consultant. The Proud Boys.

In the months leading up to the 2020 election, Sarah Ashton-Cirillo, a self-described progressive activist, embedded herself in GOP circles as part of her research for a book on right-wing extremism. What she found was a Republican consultant desperate to team the Proud Boys up with the Nevada GOP in order to challenge ballots and flip the presidential election.

“These guys were too stupid to look into my progressive politics,” Ashton-Cirillo told The Daily Beast in a phone interview this week, “because they were so eager to tokenize me.”

Facebook to end a longtime exception made for politicians who break its rules

Facebook plans to announce Friday that it will no longer automatically give politicians a pass when they break the company’s hate speech rules, a major reversal after years of criticism that it was too deferential to powerful figures during the Trump presidency.

But Facebook doesn’t plan to end the newsworthiness exception entirely. In the cases where an exception is made, the company will now disclose it publicly, the person said — after years of such decisions being closely held. And it will also become more transparent about its strikes system for people who violate its rules.

Normally, folks like Lindell should be treated like people who stand on street corners and scream incoherently. But considering the events of January 6th, I wonder if talk like this should invite a visit from the FBI.

And in all likelihood, this will land on the desk of Judge Patrick Schiltz, a Trump appointee but one who has done things like confirming the constitutionality of the governor’s mask mandate, and a man not known for suffering fools lightly (although that is hardly atypical of federal judges). In which case, may God have mercy on their souls.

Well, if you’re going to accuse somebody of doing the RICO, apparently it’s go big or go home. In this case, naming the lawyers as non-party co-conspirators to the racketeering.

Merrick Garland’s Justice Department, though, seems to have little appetite for holding Trump accountable for his other misdeeds, even opposing efforts by others to do so. It recently asked a federal judge to dismiss lawsuits against the former president relating to the forced clearing of protesters at Lafayette Square in June of 2020. As we have written about elsewhere, the department has also been jealously guarding the secrecy of the Office of Legal Counsel under Trump, refusing to turn over a memorandum relating to the department’s decision not to accuse Trump of obstruction of justice following the release of the Mueller report. And the department has been defending the assertions of executive privilege of Trump’s DOJ over Congress’ subpoena of former White House counsel Don McGahn, until recently when the department partially backed down by agreeing to allow McGahn to testify about publicly released portions of his prior testimony to special counsel Robert Mueller.

Why Is Merrick Garland’s DOJ Covering for Trump?

Dude. Everything causes SIDS. EVERY. FUCKING. THING. You know why? Because SIDS is one of the most poorly-understood phenomena on the planet. No one knows why otherwise healthy infants die in the dead of night. Therefore, literally everything that happens up to a baby’s death is a cause of SIDS. Did you have sex with the mother the night the baby died? Congratulations, it’s SIDS!

Let’s recall Trump lies about everything but the one thing he hates more than anything else is not being the center of attention. Why not believe that this is just his ploy to keep his base agitated and his name as the top topic of conversation? See we are talking about him because of these stories that he believes he will be reinstated in August. And then it will be postponed to a later date. His grift is unending as is his need to be on the front page.

re: #104 Dangerman

If we wanted to get things done, we needed more than 50 Senators, given that 2 of them are Manchin and Sinema. Reich should know better. Biden is constrained, unless he can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get these 2 obstacles to change their minds.

So, Robert, you think things would be better if we had let Trump get re-elected? Really? Do you think it would be better if the Georgia Senators were Republican? How many judges would Biden be able to appoint to the bench? How many Cabinet members would have been approved? Do you think the Covid Relief bill would have passed? What is wrong with you?

In the filibuster era, “control” of both houses only occurs if you have 60 members in the Senate. So Democrats do not have “control” of the Senate, therefore Reich’s statement fails on its face; the premise is invalid, therefore the conclusion is invalid.

This seems to be the new RW talking point —- every Democrat is Socialist, Communist, or Marxist. And the base regurgitates this nonsense on any platform they have available. My FB Trumpster acolyte responding to a friend who objected to her screed against Democrats and Biden: “When they turn our country into a totalitarian Marxist state, I wonder how that will work for you”

Technically, the filibuster could be considerably weakened or even abolished with 50 Senators —- but that doesn’t appear to be happening and there’s nothing Biden can do about that.
