Becca Stevens - “I knew from the onset of this project that I wanted to incorporate Turkish & Macedonian poetry in my writing. Writing for “The Eye” started with an oud demo sent to me by Michael League. Mike’s original demo was titled “Crozish Oud” because he thought it sounded like something David Crosby would write on guitar. I listened to it on loop while searching online for “modern Macedonian poets” that I liked. I found Nikola Madžirov’s poetry and style really spoke to me. His poem ‘The Eye’ stopped me dead in my tracks. It had the right sentiment, color/mood/feeling, and length.”

The Eye (Lyrics)
Poem by Nikola Madzirov
Translated by Sasha Dugdale

Open one eye only (x3)
The horizon is in the closed eye
Open the seashell
No solitude will escape
The stones on the riverbed drink up time
The dead fish swim towards the sun

Open one eye only (x2)

Open the sky
With one eye only (x2)

Open one eye only
The world is a young tree on a building site
Windows are rivers of our uncertainty
In my hands I keep a home
A prayer room in a hospital garden

Open one eye only (x2)

Open the sky
With one eye only (x2)
Open the sky
With one eye

An estimated 38,680 people died in traffic crashes last year, the most of any year since 2007, the agency said in releasing preliminary numbers. Final numbers normally come out in the fall.

The increase came even though the number of miles traveled by vehicle fell 13% from 2019.

Motorcyclist deaths rose 9% last year to 5,015, while bicyclist deaths were up 5% to 846. Pedestrian deaths remained steady at 6,205, and the number of people killed in passenger vehicles rose 5% to 23,395, according to NHTSA.

Deaths involving a large truck fell 2%, while traffic fatalities among people 65 and older fell 9%.

The early history of electric motorcycles is somewhat unclear. On 19 September 1895, a patent application for an “electrical bicycle” was filed by Ogden Bolton Jr. of Canton Ohio.

In case you had any question of what the GOP is about and who (not what) it stands for:

GOP Leaders to Meet With Trump on Agenda

Former President Donald Trump will meet with the Republican Study Committee in New Jersey next week to talk about the conservative agenda, the New York Post reports.

“At Republican Study Committee, we’ve been very busy as we develop the consensus conservative agenda for the future of the Republican Party, and that agenda is the Trump agenda,”

Not what Joe said. “I don’t think, right now, we need to be bipartisan.” Now, aside from the really funny fact that Joe accidentally said the opposite of what he meant, the reason he sounds funny there is because he inserted the “right now” as a way of signaling that things could change. Joe isn’t an idiot. He knows an enormous amount of money may flow to West Virginia in a Democrat-only reconciliation bill, and he’s not absolutely taking that off the table.

Just how many times does he have to be clubbed over the head with the reality that his “friends” across the aisle are using him to achieve their own ends before he changes his mind?

I don’t know what Manchin’s deal is, although if he was simply being a crypto-Republican there are better ways to do it than make yourself look like an idiot and a chump. I’d expect Biden and Schumer have a far better idea than we do.

I have even less read on Sinema, whose position seems to be “purple monkey dishwasher.”

Manchin is vulnerable.

As I lamented on election night, the inability of the Dems to flip the ME and IA senate seats really hurt the chances of the Dems to do what is needed.

Manchin is a Democrat in a sea of frothing religious right-wingers in WV. He could be kicked out of office by the next Trumper. Manchin probably wants this job for life… thus he’s doing what he thinks he needs to do.

Sinema is more likely just not up to the job.

She may be thinking that by pleasing McConnell that the latter won’t send out the attack forces after her. But she’d be mistaken in that.

I personally think that Manchin’s view of WV politics matches the state’s cultural petrification in the 1980s: “Good Ol’ Boy” politics where everybody yells and screams for the cameras, but still treat each other like buddies behind closed doors. And it certainly fits with how he keeps acting as if he’s been personally betrayed when Senate Repub “moderates” vote with the party leadership time and again. While he certainly wants their support (if not endorsement) in his future reelection bids, the impression given is of Charlie Brown thinking again and again that this time Lucy won’t pull away the football.

Sinema’s just a walking example of what happens when Dunning-Kruger and the Peter principle collide together.

Look, because Senator Manchin is a complete fucking asshole, our choices are apparently “half an infrastructure bill” or “nothing”. I don’t like it either, but if those are our choices, honestly, I’ll take half the infrastructure bill. It’s not Biden’s fault that there are two nominal Democrats in the Senate who are actively trying to derail his agenda just because they want to feel important.

My proposal: Agree to cutting the bill ask down to half, but it all has to be new spending. None of this creative accounting horseshit of moving funds from side of the ledger to the other and calling it “new,” as has been the heart of virtually every Repub “compromise” bill offered so far.

Likewise, none of this “revenue neutral” shit that really amounted to stealth cuts to existing social safety net programs. If Repubs want the funding in this bill to be “revenue neutral,” then they’ll agree to new/higher taxes to pay for it. Otherwise they’ll have to do like they did with the Trump Tax Cuts and agree to more deficit spending. At least this time, the economic growth sparked will have a real chance of paying things back.

Donald Trump does indeed believe quite genuinely that he — along with former senators David Perdue and Martha McSally — will be “reinstated” to office this summer after “audits” of the 2020 elections in Arizona, Georgia, and a handful of other states have been completed. I can attest, too, that Trump is trying hard to recruit journalists, politicians, and other influential figures to promulgate this belief — not as a fundraising tool or an infantile bit of trolling or a trial balloon, but as a fact.

Trump’s Planned ‘Reinstatement’ Is No Joke

Seth Masket: “If Trump is trying to recruit allies for his reinstatement, at what point to we treat this not as a delusion but as a coup attempt? He kinda has priors.”

Lilly Goren: “Usually this turns into a civil war of some kind, at least if the deposed king is still wandering around. #Machiavelli had a lot to say about what to do with bloodlines, though that was much more in keeping with principalities and monarchies and not elected democracies/republics.”

Jonathan Bernstein: “It’s quite possible that Trump doesn’t realize what he’s proposing is flat-out illegal.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Given that summer is right around the corner and people are acting as though the pandemic is over in the US (it isn’t, but they’re acting like it), it’s a good reminder to see which states are managing to get their residents protect from covid, and which are failing miserably.

The results are entirely predictable. GOP dominated states are severely lagging, particularly those in the South. The Northeast is doing particularly well, but even in states where they’ve got high vaccination rates, the vaccination rates drop among communities of color, and those are some of the most vulnerable people during the pandemic because they’re often in the jobs that see the most risk: service jobs that can’t work remote, like food service, retail, supermarkets, etc.

Which is why the media will simply avoid the topic or (having failed that) treat the matter as “unimportant.” The GQP and their buddies in the “liberal media” have latched onto their chosen talking point: “Trump’s losing influence, he’s not going to be a problem going forward, so why talk about him as if he matters?”

What’s funny is that the pandemic is finally starting to make people realize this, as people are refusing to come back to work for places that pay substandard wages. I only wonder if it’s a permanent thing, if people truly are fed up with being paid peanuts for shitty jobs, or if people will willingly return to being wage slaves in more “normal” conditions.

Goodbye Tex-Ass-Hole! Scared of an indictment coming your way???

Allen West, the Trump-loving chairman of the Texas Republican Party, has abruptly resigned after less than a year on the job.

In an announcement posted on the Texas GOP’s website, the party revealed that West “has submitted his irrevocable resignation,” although he “will remain at the helm of the Texas GOP until a new Chairman can be selected.”

The party gave no reason for West’s resignation and would only say that he “will take this opportunity to prayerfully reflect on a new chapter in his already distinguished career.”

Using a scapegoat to avoid accountability is the most overused tool in Trump’s arsenal. And the MAGAts are running with it, convinced that the email dump finally “proves” that Dr. Fauci was deliberately lying to the American people in order to sabotage the effort to deal with CV.

Of course, none of the “revelations” mean what they think they mean. Knowing the origin of a virus doesn’t mean much if it’s already running rampant in your civilian population, so “lying” about a lab leak doesn’t give Donny an out. And commerical-grade masks being ineffective fits with Dr Fauci’s admissions that he advised against masks at the beginning to dissuade hording of medical-grade masks, rather than the supposed “bombshell” that Donny was right about masks being unnecessary. Finally, a physicist asking/suggesting HCQ as a treatment for CV is not proof that Donny was right to push is any more than the same physicist declaring climate change a “hoax.”

It’s like when Hillary’s emails were made public, confirmation bias is running wild among those who are looking to prove that the person they think a criminal truly is one.

re: #69 Targetpractice

Fauci was also concerned that a run on masks would limit access by actual health professionals to that critical gear in the early stages of the pandemic, because if health professionals got sick and died, it could quickly lead to the collapse of health care delivery systems across the regions where the outbreak struck first and hardest.

It was a calculated decision. And once it became clear that masking general population would be beneficial, that’s what Fauci recommended and suggested.

Trump ignored it. He ignored it in the micro sense - not masking in his own sphere, and refused to insist on others masking or imposing masking despite evidence that it would reduce spread and save lives.

The origin of covid19 doesn’t change Trump’s disastrous handling. Once it entered the US, Trump’s response made every aspect of the pandemic response worse.

The disease could have arisen in nature AND been a lab leak. After all, the lab studies viruses it discovers in nature all the time. Virologists could have brought the disease from another part of the country into the lab for further investigation and then it could have accidentally escaped (no modification to its genetic code) due to an inadvertent mishandling.

There’s a fair argument to be made that a lot of those people figured one of two things was going to happen: They were going to ride the TCJA to a larger Congressional majority in the midterms (which, to be fair, seemed to be conventional wisdom at the time) or that Trump was basically guaranteed a second term and so there was no rush because they’d get everything they wanted come 2021.

Yet neither was really the first item on his agenda in 2017, abolishing the ACA was and he was prepared to do everything in his power to make it happen. The TCJA was the fallback, passed largely because the clock on reconciliation was ticking down and they needed something “major” to run on the following year.

Bibi’s gotten used to the opposition being so disorganized that all he had to do to remain in power was keep them too busy bickering with each other to pose a real threat to his rule. It never occurred to him that all that stomping on his enemies would eventually unite them just to see him finally gone from office.

going to have a take here that is likely not going to be very popular… while many of us are pissed off at Joe Manchin and Kirsten Sinema for their positions on the filibuster and getting legislation passed and playing into the hands of the GOP and the “do nothing” paintbrush that they use to justify their criticisms on Congress and Government (and to be honest I am as well) I need to remind us all that this is brought to us courtesy of Mitch McConnell.

This “standoff” doesn’t happen if McConnell doesn’t lean on his fellow Republicans and that they GO ALONG WITH IT to perpetuate this farce.

If the GOP Senators were “allowed” to vote their conscience on certain issues, we would likely have some creaky semblance of bipartisanship and see slower incremental change, but change all the same… instead, they enable McConnell to have an inordinate amount of leverage in what gets passed and what gets voted on and to illustrate that he is the one who has the final say (which is twisted to say the least) in regards to being a hurdle that refuses to be cleared.

In a way, Manchin and Sinema are quaint, misguided, stupid and out of touch with how the GOP actually is and while that is indeed infuriating they are right on this one thing… it doesn’t have to be this way. The REASON for why it is this way boils down to Mitch McConnell and the scorched earth tactics approach to Government and the spineless members of the GOP caucus who could simply ignore him and cast votes as they wish.

Your tax dollars being used to fund Christianity, via the block grant, the discriminating conservative’s favourite vehicle for theft.

At least 10 states divert federal welfare funding to anti-abortion clinics (The Guardian, today)

At least 10 US states have siphoned millions of dollars from federal block grants, meant to provide aid to their neediest families, to pay for the operations of ideological anti-abortion clinics.

These overwhelmingly Republican-led states used money from the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (Tanf), better known as welfare or direct cash aid, to fund the activities of anti-abortion clinics associated with the evangelical right. The clinics work to dissuade women from obtaining abortions.

The states in question:

Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas have used federal Tanf funds to support anti-abortion clinics.

The revelation is to be published in a report by the accountability group Equity Forward, which was provided exclusively to the Guardian. Equity Forward produces investigative research on human rights, gender equity and sexual and reproductive health and justice.

These 10 states funneled the money through “Alternatives to Abortion” programs, part of state budgets established by conservative legislatures and often run through state health departments. They not only send millions in federal welfare funds, but also state taxpayer dollars to such centers.

Exactly. You deal with the situation as it is, not the situation you wish it was.

And I believe that so much of the talk about how Joe is playing some long game with the Repubs is wishful thinking at this point. The man has spent more time in recent weeks trying to sell his own party (and the public) on whatever “compromise” that Senate Repubs insist they’d be willing to back than the bills his own party are trying to pass. This is not a chess master who’s trying to set the country up for his announcement that he’s suddenly okay with abolishing/reforming the filibuster, this is a man who is desperately chasing unicorns.

There has been none done I can find.

The point of crisis pregnancy centers isn’t cost-effectiveness, it’s to shame women or delay them from getting an abortion.

The few which give out newborn items such as diapers also require women who get the items to work in proselytising for Christianity or attend Bible classes.

No religious outfit is “cost-effective.”

In the most egregious example in The Guardian article, for years Pennsylvania used both TANF block-grant money and state tax money to the tune of tens of millions of dollars to set up CPCs in Michigan.

Therefore the “benefit” to Pennsylvania taxpayers was exactly 0.

As for cost-effectiveness, the religious zealots like the Catholic Church or evangelicals could not care less (since they run CPCs).

(long read, full study)

A Web-Based Geolocated Directory of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) in the United States: Description of CPC Map Methods and Design Features and Analysis of Baseline Data (National Institutes of Health, March 2020)

Abstract

Background

Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) are nonprofit organizations that aim to dissuade people considering abortion. The centers frequently advertise in misleading ways and provide inaccurate health information. CPCs in the United States are becoming more medicalized and gaining government funding and support. We created a CPC Map, a Web-based geolocated database of all CPCs currently operating in the United States, to help individuals seeking health services know which centers are CPCs and to facilitate academic research.

Objective

This study aimed to describe the methods used to develop and maintain the CPC Map and baseline findings regarding the number and distribution of CPCs in the United States. We also examined associations between direct state funding and the number of CPCs and relationships between the number of CPCs and state legislation proposed in 2018-2019 to ban all or most abortions.

McGahn can refuse to answer questions outside that narrow line of questioning, including queries about communications between McGahn and other administration officials that do not appear in the public version of Mueller’s report.

That limited scope raises questions about how much the committee and the American people will learn from McGahn’s interview beyond what’s already publicly known.”

The Russians are deorbiting the Pirs ISS module, which is being replaced with a new docking module. Pirs mean “pier,” which I think is a great name for a docking module. The new module’s name, nauka, means “science.”

As if we really expected Crackhead Mike to do anything sane…

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell Skewered for ‘Craptastic’ Lawsuit Against Dominion and Smartmatic That Alleges ‘Ghosts in the Machines’

The filing has been described as a “nonsense,” “half-assed,” “craptastic legal job” filled with “baloney” and “lunacy” that is even “cringier and more incoherent than” than even Lindell’s critics expected. One attorney called it a “flaming bag stuffed with feces” because it attempts to litigate similar issues in a separate U.S. District Court from where Dominion sued Lindell originally — among other alleged transgressions.

Lindell seems undeterred by his critics.

He’s going to continue calling for a coup until he’s locked up.

lawandcrime.com

The law firm that brought Lindell’s action, Barnes & Thornburg LLP, should close up shop and end business, because there’s some serious professional responsibility violations going on, along with piss-poor lawyering. Wrong venue. Trying to file suit in a completely different venue from original venue. Lack of jurisdiction. It just goes on and on.

B&T clients should review all of their filings and positions, because it’s clear that B&T is more than happy to mismanage and advise on any lawsuit, no matter the merits. They’re willing to file frivolous lawsuits that do nothing but cost the client. Sanction the heck out of B&T.

B&T is willing to flambee its reputation by associating with Lindell. Good for them.

Judges don’t take kindly to clear fuckups on basic civil procedure, like knowingly suing (or countersuing) in wrong jurisdictions, countersuing in a federal district court knowing that there’s an action in a completely different federal district court between the parties on the same/similar set of facts.

Yet neither was really the first item on his agenda in 2017, abolishing the ACA was and he was prepared to do everything in his power to make it happen. The TCJA was the fallback, passed largely because the clock on reconciliation was ticking down and they needed something “major” to run on the following year.

And the GOP doesn’t even talk about repealing the ACA anymore, because their attempt to do so was toxically unpopular. Now they just pursue court challenges against it, and try to sabotage it when they control the executive branch.

I was reading one of #lawtwitter’s threads on the subject - I don’t remember which one - and the author basically said explicitly that there are already general counsel telling him that they will refuse to take their business to B&T in the future because of this disaster of a lawsuit. The thread from @AkivaMCohen is particularly savage, and specifies in detail all the ways in which they fucked up as a matter of law.

Gilded crap is still crap.

Trump hasn’t built a luxury building in years, and his namesake NYC tower is ancient compared to Billionaire’s Row. People are trying to flee from Trump thanks to his toxic and criminal syndicate relationships, which allows the bargain hunters to seem to get in at a discount.

Trump’s also back trying to sell a bunch of buildings from his portfolio to raise money, and that will also backfire as people look to downrate his buildings, again for the same reason - it’s a dumpster fire.

Maybe it’s just the parochial view from NYC, but AFAICR, the gilt has been off the lily of Trump properties for many years now: no one (outside of shady Russian oligarchs looking to launder funds of questionable origins) has been willing to pay a “premium” for living/renting in a Trump building in this century - if not earlier.
Supposedly, that’s the reason why TFG had been centering his development interests on golf properties in recent years: less investment required, reasonably-positive cash flow, the name still has (some sort of) cachet, and less likelihood of having to crash and bail….

It’s been one hell of a long time, but I could probably still use one of those machines (I was a teacher’s assistant in high school, and used one to run off copies of worksheets and tests).

I think I could as well. It looks like a miniature version of the printing presses I ran in my after school job many years ago. I still have all my fingers.

Gaetz who is under federal investigation and Jordan, who should be.

That’s all the GOP could muster for hearing McGahn’s testimony under oath about Trump’s misconduct and the Mueller report.

Glad to know they’re interested in learning facts and truth about what happened. They again make it clear that they don’t care about facts or information and would rather spew misinformation and agitprop to stay in power.

While I’m at it, it’s also clear that Trump’s spewing crap again about how Facebook hurt his feelings and that this somehow is an affront to those who voted for Trump.

Heck fuckface von clownstick, more people voted against you than voted for you. Record numbers in fact. Trump has never won a popular vote. Ever. He’s lost by millions of votes.

But again, every one of these utterances goes back to his original worldview - he does not accept any election results where he is not the winner.

George P. Bush is selling mug cozies saying how Trump thinks he’s the only Bush who got it right. Way to insult your father, mother, uncle, grandfather, and presumably also his Planned Parenthood supporting, great grandfather Senator Prescott Bush, not that Donald Trump would know anything about him.

I’ll add him to the list of elected officials even more craven than Ted Cruz along with Greg Pence.

I remember having this fear the last time I helped somebody get unstuck (which is now a thing I can do again! Yay!) He had his truck buried up to the axle in mud. In his defense, he was clearly trying to show off for his girlfriend, whom he had taken down to the local makeout spot for a little Friday night action.

An hour ago, NBC via MSN:

TV news stations become apparent target in cyberattack

First it was gas. Then it was meat. Now it’s local television stations.

At least two TV news stations have been completely offline since Thursday in what cybersecurity experts say appears to be a ransomware attack on their parent company.

ABC affiliate WFTV in Orlando, Florida, and NBC affiliate WPXI in Pittsburgh, which are both owned by the Cox Media Group, were told Thursday by managers to shut down company computers and phones.

“We are only able to communicate with each other over personal phones and text messages,” said a WFTV employee who wasn’t authorized to speak for the company and requested not to be named.

So far both stations were able to still put together local broadcasts, but have been limited in what they can do. Cox didn’t reply to requests for comment. But the event appeared to be the latest U.S. incident of ransomware, where hackers will infect a network and hold its files hostage while demanding payment, said Allan Liska, an analyst at the cybersecurity company Recorded Future.

@AkivaMCohen said the same thing in the tweet I linked. My guess is, this guy was intentionally vague during the client vetting/approval process, the partners signed off on it, he filed this absolute turd of a lawsuit and now they’re in full-on damage control mode. Complete with the Godfather-esque “I made him an offer he couldn’t refuse” meeting where he was offered a chance to summarily resign or be fired… out of a cannon.

if there’s anything all of this demonstrates, it’s just how many fourth-tier law schools there apparently are in the world, because even stuff that a non-lawyer knows would be unpalatable gets offered up by these guys.

Quick takeaway: George P. Bush is that guy who is in love with fascism and who has never ever in his life been subject to real actual oppression by any authority ever.

This includes the drunken, falling off the curb disturbances that local cops conveniently wrote off as he stumbled home from college parties and his family connections made sure he never would have suffered any consequences.
