Does this mean Mo got served or not?

Yes. The Federal Rules of Procedure say that service can be done on any adult living in a home.

At least the justice system, while slow, can deal with a fairly high level of attempted fuckery. Sure, Mo, it’s not like any other clever dickhead has ever tried to avoid service before.

We need to keep every Democratic senator up for re-election and elect more Democratic senators in 2022. Yes, those Democratic senators will be on the right side of the party, and relatively conservative. For the most party, they’d have to be to win over states which are currently Republican. But even if the Democratic caucus in the Senate goes even more right wards, with enough votes, you will be able to actually enact a more left agenda than you could with a slightly more left but smaller Democratic, because there would be enough of a majority to ignore Sinema and Manchin.

Know how Fox News is always yelling real loud because Vice President Kamala Harris isn’t personally at the border solving that problem with her bare hands? Harris’s job has always been a bit more complicated and brainy than that, and it’s specifically to work on the root causes that lead to migration crises and work with Central America and Mexico toward those aims.

And today, Harris is doing that! In Guatemala! And you can watch her press briefing with the Guatemalan president right here!

Sorry, Fox News, she’s still not personally building baby jails, to put babies in. We know that would probably make you feel better. Not gonna happen.

Because Trump doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about and doesn’t understand that killing the filibuster is ultimately in the Democrats’ best interest. He may have been frustrated that he couldn’t take advantage of his majority to just force through whatever horrific garbage he wanted, but Mitch is not nearly the fool Trump is. He knows damn well that as the hard right becomes more of a minority in this country, as American society starts to slide slowly to the left, they are bound to be a permanent minority, and the filibuster is a powerful tool to enable the tyranny of the minority.

The only risk as I see it to the GOP is that they are worried what about what the next Democratic senate might do (as obviously if a GOP Senate kills the filibuster, there will be another Dem Senate eventually).

Think about it, if Mitch had killed the filibuster back when Trump wanted him to, we might have a legit 1/6 commission right now.

But the GOP is also both much easier to get on the same page due to distilling the diversity out of their base, as well as much more likely to get the press to back whatever they do and thus elide any consequences of pushing for that kind of change.

Riley June Williams — the woman with ties to the far right who was shown on video directing people around the Capitol and is accused of abetting the theft of Nancy Pelosi’s laptop — has not yet been indicted. Normally, the Speedy Trial Act gives prosecutors a limit of time — roughly 30 days — to formally charge you after you’re arrested. But with Williams, the government has been using a series of motions to extend this timeline. They currently have until July 21 to indict Williams.

That, by itself, isn’t all that unusual. But amid an ongoing conversation about whether the January 6 investigation will hold the most powerful accountable for the insurrection, I want to point to the existing long unindicted defendants to suggest, again, we don’t really know where this investigation is going.

Tracking which January 6 defendants haven’t been indicted is one way to identify cases that might be more interesting than others. Jon Schaffer’s case got continued for months leading up to his entry into a cooperation agreement on April 16. And Christopher Kelly’s case got continued for months before the government moved to dismiss it on June 1. At least some of these weren’t the boilerplate unopposed motions for a continuance, citing the unprecedented challenge of assembling all the evidence in this case, that have been used in most defendants cases; they were more specific requests for more time to conduct the investigation. As the disparate fate of these two men suggests, you can’t really tell what is interesting about a case if the formal charging is delayed.

Here’s the thing: Yes, it is entirely possible that a Republican majority could take advantage of the lack of a filibuster and do some serious damage in the near future. In fact, it’s more than possible, it’s probable. However, we as a society need to be demolishing the ability of the rich white Republican minority to hinder us from making progress on social issues. I understand; I lived through the Trump years the same as the rest of us, and I see the incalculable amount of damage that unchecked Republican control has done. And it would be worse without the filibuster, I agree. But the more progress we make on enabling progress, the less likely a Republican victory is. If we can get things like basic voting rights, infrastructure, better health care, green energy, and people are happy and they like what they see, it’s going to be hard for Republicans to come out and be like, “We’re against the Democrats and don’t stand for anything,” like they have been getting away with for years.

Interesting article from yesterday on the Apple Store and _non-Apple_ apps:

…snip…

But among the 1.8 million apps on the App Store, scams are hiding in plain sight.Customers for several VPN apps, which allegedly protect users’ data, complained in Apple App Store reviews that the apps told users their devices have been infected by a virus to dupe them into downloading and paying for software they don’t need.

…snip…

Five VPN apps — Prime Shield, Spy Block, Secure & Fast VPN Protector, CyGuard VPN and Upcure — raised red flags because of suspicious ratings and user complaints on the App Store. VPN apps are designed to protect a user’s privacy by routing their Internet traffic through a remote server. But by siphoning all traffic from a phone, they could also obtain passwords and sensitive login information

…snip…

Apple also took down a separate VPN app that wasn’t among the top 1,000 grossing apps after inquiries from The Post. FirstVPN: WiFi Security Master was programmed to tell users, “Malware detected! 36 viruses were found,” according to security researchers, then prod users for $13 a month to block the viruses. Users could have seen this notice after downloading the app, and it could have been used as scareware to get them to subscribe. The notice did not appear immediately after The Post downloaded the app. Security researcher Patrick Wardle independently found the message about 36 viruses embedded in the app’s code. Traditional anti-virus software for iPhones doesn’t even exist because of the way Apple restricts access to the phone’s software.

…etc…

Apple’s tightly controlled App Store is teeming with scams

I understand that the raccoon’s closest relatives are bears. And once they reach adulthood, some are quite unafraid of taking on much larger creatures. Very cute when they are young, though.

Of course, sometimes their dislikes are rather unusual. One night, when I was growing up, a large raccoon took a dislike to one of our Rose of Sharon bushes. Not much left beyond a nubbin of a stump.

Btw, I visually verified that it was indeed a raccoon. As a kid, though, I was fairly accepting of facts, once they were verified. “So it is a raccoon. Oh well, I guess it has its reasons.”

Way back in the day I worked at a Boy Scout Camp for couple of summers. In those days it was legal to keep raccoons and skunks as pets in Pennsylvania.

Several of the camp counselors captured baby raccoons and took them home as pets. The next summer when they returned, everybody pretty much had the same story.

As soon as the raccoon reached sexual maturity, it left “to make its way in the world”. Generally a patch of nearby woods. And all also mentioned that the neighborhood dogs quickly learned to give the raccoons wide berth.

For some reason, I was reminded of this 2011 article:

So right now the two most powerful people on the planet are a naive nostalgic old man from Appalachia and a cloud cookoolander from the Southwest. And nothing important happens without both their blessings? I’m sure this is exactly how the system was intended to work. NATO nations have recognized cyber as a domain of war for a couple of years now, and this is what that means. Kill NATO citizens with a cyber attack, and then wait for special ops and missiles to come knocking.

Of course, hide in Mother Russia and you’re probably safe for the moment, but Mother Russia can also learn about the Economic Instrument of Power.

If the goopers’ pitch to Corporate America is now “Give us money so we can force you to do shit that threatens your existence as a company”, they might not be super thrilled to open their wallets.

My evil too big to fail employer is not going to mandate vaccines for people to return to work. That said, masks are still required for employees in branches and for traversing common spaces in non-customer locations. And probably for that massive room I work in since the powers that be decided to get rid of cubes in favor of having us sit on top of each other.

Enbridge is gearing up for a final construction push on the pipeline, which clips a corner of North Dakota on its way across northern Minnesota to Enbridge’s terminal in Superior, Wisconsin. The Canadian and Wisconsin replacement segments are already carrying oil. The Minnesota segment is about 60% complete. The company has said it plans to put the line into service late this year.

Protesters said the “Treaty People Gathering” was the largest show of resistance yet to the project.

Protesters used a boat on a trailer to block the entrance to an Enbridge pump station south of the main protest site, and about two dozen chained themselves to construction equipment, Minnesota Public Radio News reported. A Border Patrol helicopter hovered about 20 feet (6 meters) off the ground, blowing up sand and dirt, to try to get protesters to leave.

Enbridge told MPR that its workers left the site in an effort to de-escalate the situation.

Never-before-heard audio shows how Rudy Giuliani “relentlessly pressured and coaxed the Ukrainian government in 2019 to investigate baseless conspiracies about then-candidate Joe Biden,” CNN reports.

“The new audio demonstrates how Giuliani aggressively cajoled the Ukrainians to do Trump’s bidding. And it undermines Trump’s oft-repeated assertion that ‘there was no quid pro quo’ where Zelensky could secure US government support if he did political favors for Trump.”

clearly no amount of new evidence would have changed the outcome of Trump’s first impeachment trial. they simply would not have convicted him.

Following up on something I observed the other day.

This guy

wrote this opinion piece

Israel’s political striptease show

What will they do with this flawed man? This flawed man who delivered more peace treaties than any Prime Minister in history and more economic prosperity, this flawed man that transformed Israel into a superpower? Those in this striptease show have only one thing to say, “Crucify Him. crucify him!” Yes, they’re all drunk. They’re drunk on power and revenge. What did he do to make them so angry? It had to be horrible.

but what I find interesting that this isn’t just a “mask off” moment for Christian Zionists, because the Netanyahu-supporters are saying the same thing.

Israel Should Focus on Evangelicals, Not U.S. Jews Who Are More Critical, Dermer Says

Beyond finding fault with American Jewish criticism of Israel, Dermer also lashed out at domestic opponents of the prime minister, calling Israelis “particularly ungrateful” and describing Netanyahu as “something of a Gulliver in Israel” under attack by “Lilliputians doing their best to tie (him) down.”

and this is all part of a bigger picture in which Netanyahu, et al, are willing to go along with the idea Jews that don’t comply with their exact plans are suspect

Israel backs Hungary, says financier Soros is a threat

And, yes, I’m belaboring a point…what these allied groups have in common, an ocean and a religion apart, is that each sees itself as licensed to dictate the belonging, and thus the rights, of everyone else. It’s not just these two, either: the petrostate monarchs and the various European ethno-nationalists and American reactionaries all rub up against one another because their distinct “ideas” are less important than the shared conceit that they, as hegemons, get to dictate terms to the rest of us.

150
The Ghost of a Flea  Jun 7, 2021 • 4:06:30pm

Ur-Fascism is like a machine where you feed in any existing idea and through a series of moulds and compressions the machine replaces the interior complexity of that idea with the same small number of tropes and trite emotional evocations.

It’s not even an ideology, it’s thing that makes ideology impossible because truth is only an aesthetic quality, and epistemology does not exist beyond what has utility for the ur-fascist.

What we’re watching with all these different public figures and political factions that blunder into the same talking points and rhetorical gestures is that homoousian quality coming to the surface.

To no one’s (who has been paying attention) surprise:

Boris Johnson’s Brexit chief admits he ‘underestimated’ chaos in Northern Ireland

Boris Johnson has been blasted for “breaking” promises to Northern Ireland after his Brexit chief admitted he “underestimated” the chaos after leaving the EU.

Lord Frost confessed time is “starting to run out” to fix the problems with sending goods from Britain to Northern Ireland.

And he said the UK Government had “underestimated” the impact the Northern Ireland Protocol, which Mr Johnson negotiated as part of his original so-called ‘oven ready’ Brexit deal in 2019, would have on the country.

Brexit was always about guttural nationalism (in central and northern England), ignoring the complexities that the UK faces in the 21st century.

United Airlines says it, too, won’t hire unvaccinated workers cbsnews.com via @cbsmoneywatch

So what’s to stop people from just lying on their applications or at their interview about it? Will companies have access to a database they can use to confirm vaccination status?

If you got vaccinated at a county event, chances are the county has you on record as being vaccinated - that is how it works up in my neck of the woods.

Only a high of 83F by me tomorrow. I’ve been without air conditioning since late last week, and it has sucked. I have zero energy if the room temperature is over 80F, so I took the day off.

They brought the wrong part today. I’m hoping they get this fixed early tomorrow.

re: #64 Dopamine Fish

Raccoons are generally live-and-let-live critters, but like many wild animals, they take exactly zero shit. They will absolutely let loose against a larger animal if they feel threatened.

Where we live, every few years a mother dies or abandons her young. Then they come begging at our house. Always four of them, and always displaying the broadest range of behaviors: One so friendly it jumps into your arms, lice and all, another that comes up to you. A third that is a bit shy and standoffish and a fourth that is terrified of humans.
