LYRICS:
Every day I walk out in this torn up world
And I fight to survive
I’m laughing when I make it to the Saturday
And I’m alive
Carrying your smile with me
Carrying your smile with me

Everywhere I look I see this world slipping down
That low road, day by day
And I just go on working for the things I need
And making my own way
Carrying your smile with me
Carrying your smile with me
Take a walk on the troubled side of this old town
Take a walk on the broken streets and the buildings falling down
Look at all these kids with nothing but trouble in their eyes
Trouble in their future, trouble in their lives
Some bridges are falling down
Some bridges are still around

Take a walk on the shaded uptown avenue
Some people are doing well no matter how they do
And I know there’s more to life than what you own
But I see so many good things, things I’ve never known
Some bridges are falling down
Some bridges are still around
Every night I listen to the sound of the street
Lying in my bed
I love to see the dreams that are dancing there
In the light above your head
And sometimes I get so weary
And when hope is caving in
You fill me with your love and your laughter, Baby
Until I get back up again
Carrying your smile with me
Take a walk on the streets of this divided town
Carrying your smile with me
Take a walk on the smoking edge of the battleground
Carrying your smile with me
Take a look at the situation
The poverty and the desperation
Take the time for the realization
Everyday I’m
Take a walk in the daylight
Carrying your smile with me
Some bridges are falling down
Carrying your smile with me
Some bridges are still around

People were talking in the previous thread about Benson, AZ.

During the trip down to New Mexico my brother and I both noticed the rather consistent mounting of metal gates on all ground-level doors and metal bars across ground-level windows on a lot of house in Albuquerque. (Which apparently has an issue with break-ins and petty theft. Which was mentioned to me more than once by residents and people running AirB&B locations.

My brother mentioned that it reminded me of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia where the homes in the middle class neighborhoods and gated communities were similarly fortified and to a degree little walled compounds unto themselves.

I also noticed while driving in more rural areas lots of places with serious postings about cameras, no trespassing signs, and implicit threats to simply shoot said trespassers. And while I was down there my internet ads heavily went towards ads for security systems, plus the occasional ad for installing solar.*

* - My brother remarked as well that the houses in the region seemed to have a lot less solar and solar water heating equipment in place than he thought it should have given the climate.

A week or so ago I was at a dinner party (didn’t want to). So we’re standing on the front porch and a slight Hispanic fellow was coming our way with one of them popsicle carts. One of the guys starts railing about ” the Mexicans”. I say this guy is working hard chasing his dreams. So as he gets close I flag him down and bought every treat in the cart. Lucky for me it was almost empty and I ended up paying 70 dollars (yikes). The look on the assholes face was priceless though.

And a lot of those “mexicans” ancestors were in North America well before his came across the pond.

Part of the New Mexico trip was me driving north along the Rio Grande and you see signs for the various 17th century land grants made by the Spanish crown in that area.

Many places in the world, I think, one will find it typical that the local “middle class”, i.e., those who can afford their own dwelling or business, will as a matter of habit put bars on doors, gates on driveways and shop fronts, and even wire on top of fences.

IIRC, when I’d go to Tijuana, many walls were topped with broken glass bottles (instead of razor wire.)

Coming from fly-over America (where we often didn’t lock our doors), all of this used to strike me as very unfortunate for people who live in such regions.

Now as I’m older I’m a bit more understanding, but I think the problem of petty thievery is one of those things that manifests when a society is broken.

I write that because now-a-days one can be accused of inviting a thief if one doesn’t maximize defenses.

I take great pleasure in telling such people that if they’re worried about an undocumented worker, whose knowledge of English might well shaky at best, taking their job….what does say about not only their job, but more importantly, what does it say about them if they can be replaced by anyone capable of demonstrating their ability to breathe?

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jun 13, 2021 • 11:03:01am

In the ancient days, the early towns and villages were built to protect the inhabitants (and their animals - people and their animals often resided together). Thus the town was surrounded by a wall of some sort.

It’s all the outworking of our hyper-aggressive (for a primate) territoriality.

Cultures that developed from many centuries of living closely together seem to be better at not having so much defensiveness. From living in Japan, and visiting Hong Kong, the contrast with other places I’ve been (e.g., Tijuana, Bangkok) is really quite striking.

And this has nothing to do with “race” (ugh).

And I suspect that what is really going on, say in Latin America, is that when a culture starts out based in conquest and slavery, the effects downstream is one where there is a deep distrust of authority and law, for good reason.

When authority and law means oppression, people live in fear. Enough generations of that, and I can see how a culture reverts to the original nature of human settlement (i.e., building a fortress for your family and animals.)

“Lawlessness”, which is romanticized in American entertainment depicting the “wild west”, is not how a society can thrive.

And this gets me back to Trump and his gang. Yes, I think we can call it a “gang”. Americans, especially the lily-white GOP, go on and on about gangs from Mexico and central America. But that is because those “gangs” are the other gangs. Trump and his supporters, in their quest for autocratic dystopia, are very much like any other gang around the world. They just have more money.

After five hours of parliamentary chaos and speeches interrupted by shouting and curses with elected officials on the Israeli right being ejected for inappropriate behavior one after the other, Bennet and Lapid have just been sworn into office in less than a minute. The first as current Prime Minister and future replacement PM, and the latter as current secretary of state, current replacement PM, and future PM.
Most of this country has spent the whole day worried until the very end that some sort of trickery would bring it all down at the absolute last minute.
There’s massive celebrations in the streets, even in the relatively small city I’m in.
It’s unreal.

Although if it would have been up to the Crime Minister, a fifth election would have been just fine. He was trying to sabotage today’s vote to ensure that right to the very end.

A few years back, when the house across the street had been rented out to some dodgy people, and the house next to it had been suddenly abandoned by a family that had lived there for years and had squatters take up residence inside, my wife woke up one morning to find that someone had stolen the left front wheel off her car in the driveway sometime in the night.

Walked on the beach with friends this morning - so we went a bit further down than the dogs and I normally go. There’s this pretty cool house / holistic center…always like seeing it from the sand.

Also, the bridge on the bike path has been closed due to some minor erosion issues…hopefully they get it fixed this summer.

#Russia’s state media is portraying Capitol insurrectionist Richard Barnett as an innocent victim of gov’t persecution. He was happy to talk to Russian state TV. Imagine what would have happened to any protester who broke into the Kremlin and propped his feet up on Putin’s desk.

The chrome dome there is Kiselyov, who is basically TV’s chief propagandist. I’m at a loss to explain what the hell this is besides utter pointless trolling. They’re trying to get the population used to the idea that anyone who says a word in public or online against the government is a terrorist and foreign insurrectionist, and then they’re going on about what an injustice it is that some guy invading a legislature is being persecuted for having a full trial with independent defense.

Russians will either believe a lot of stuff through constant osmosis or simply not care, but as a whole they’re not stupid and are quite willing to distrust the Russian government (witness the pathetic COVID vaccination rate). I’m thinking more and more that Kremlin-level control over elite behavior is disintegrating, and that these assholes are just spouting nonsense because it feels good and there’s nobody to stop them.

Yeah but he’s a long way away from the power and legal protections awarded to him by virtue of his position, which he desperately needs at this time. Also, term-limit legislation is about to be brought to a vote in the Israeli parliament that could almost certainly make it so that he can’t serve ever again.
Plus there’s the fact that the smaller sharks in his party are already smelling blood in the water (three of them), and the first steps in the Likud’s succession wars started last week, ahead of schedule.

You know, if I live to be 94, I’d like to be as spry and with it as Queen Elizabeth. This is not an endorsement of the monarchy, I am still a small-r republican (“we got rid of them in 1776”), but holy crap I wonder what her regimen is that she keeps up a pretty heavy schedule.

“…The complaint, filed last month, argued that the mandate is unlawful and forces “employees to be human ‘guinea pigs’ as a condition for continued employment.”
The judge took particular issue with the complaint equating the mandate to medical experimentation during the Holocaust, calling the comparison “reprehensible.”

But U.S. District Judge Lynn N. Hughes rejected that argument. In his ruling, he wrote the lawsuit’s claim that the vaccines are experimental and dangerous “is false, and it is also irrelevant.” The hospital system’s requirement does not violate state or federal law or public policy, he said.

“Methodist is trying to do their business of saving lives without giving them the covid-19 virus,” Hughes wrote. “It is a choice made to keep staff, patients and their families safer. Bridges can freely choose to accept or refuse a covid-19 vaccine; however, if she refuses, she will simply need to work somewhere else.”

Jennifer Bridges, the lead plaintiff “who has raised more than $100,000 for her legal battle on GoFundMe, said she would not give up despite the case being thrown out.”

She’s discovered how easy it is to raise wingnut welfare, and doesn’t want it to end.

I worked for that hospital as a temp after I left Harris County Central Data Processing while waiting for my invested money to come through to pay for move back up here to PA. It was a nice enough place to work, they even tried to get me to stay and go full time for them. But I was already set on leaving Texas.

Gay Teen Worried He Might Be Christian (The Onion)

LOUISVILLE, KY—At first glance, high school senior Lucas Faber, 18, seems like any ordinary gay teen. He’s a member of his school’s swing choir, enjoys shopping at the mall, and has sex with other males his age. But lately, a growing worry has begun to plague this young gay man. A gnawing feeling that, deep down, he may be a fundamentalist, right-wing Christian.

“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” Faber admitted to reporters Monday. “It’s like I get these weird urges sometimes, and suddenly I’m tempted to go behind my friends’ backs and attend a megachurch service, or censor books in the school library in some way. Even just the thought of organizing a CD-burning turns me on.”

Added Faber, “I feel so confused.”

The openly gay teen, who came out to his parents at age 14 and has had a steady boyfriend for the past seven months, said he first began to suspect he might be different last year, when he started feeling an odd stirring within himself every time he passed a church. The more conservative the church, Faber claimed, the stronger his desire was to enter it.

‘Pick a Sunday:’ Indigenous leaders ask Catholics to stay home, push for apology (CTV)

Indigenous leaders in Saskatchewan are calling on Catholics to stand in solidarity with residential school survivors by not attending church services.

Felix Thomas, chief of the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation northeast of Saskatoon, asked Friday for Catholic worshippers to make their feelings known by praying at home instead.

“Something that everybody and every Christian can do is have that show of solidarity and not show up for church on Sunday,” said Thomas.

“If it’s not this Sunday, pick a Sunday.”

It would send a message to the church that congregants care about what happened in residential schools and want a meaningful apology, he said.

“You can pray at home in your own way. You don’t need a middleman to pray to the Creator, to God.”

David Pratt is vice-chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, which represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. He said “anything that would help pressure the (Catholic) Church to do what’s right would be good.”

Good luck with that. People won’t stop donating to the Church over child rape, so I doubt a little light genocide is going to move them.

Thanks for the info. Yep, I will have a lot to learn. Some I already know, as my parents owned a 5th wheel and my dad was always bitching about it costing him a “fortune” to fix something.

My first cost, after taking possession of it, is having a full safety inspection done and any deficiencies corrected. Current owner has already said there was a problem with the front fuel tank (it’s not connected to the fuel line for some reason) that will need to be fixed.

Renovating the interior I can pretty much do myself. The only cost occurred there will be materials.

Then you have the day to day stuff like RV/Marine TP, holding tank deodorizer, pig tails to plug into the assorted non-standard external A.C. power posts, yada, yada, yada.

Yep, I got to hear about it. Now I get to live it. LoL

There are concerns that aside from the I Amendment violation, it is a way to smuggle Christian Nationalism into all Texas public schools.

Concerns are being raised over Texas’s so-called 1836 project bill over its requirement to promote the “Christian Heritage” of Texas (I’m guessing that teaching the Christian Heritage would run afoul of critical race theory and enslavement in Texas).

There are concerns that aside from the I Amendment violation, it is a way to smuggle Christian Nationalism into all Texas public schools.

Of course it is. This isn’t 4-D Chess. It’s barely checkers. These people aren’t very smart, they are just brazen because they’ve been getting away with this shit for a bit now. They think, and probably rightly, they can fire the think-tank pseudo-intellectuals and just do whatever.

There’s also the tidbit about Texas pretty much determining the content of textbooks nationwide since publishers are willing to print whatever Texas wants because they hold so much power via the numbers of students in their state. This never should have been allowed in the first place. It’s ridiculous that state curriculum standards are not uniform and accurate across the country.

Someone needs to flip the script on these asshole Christians.

“Texas LGBT employees petition court for religious exemption to fire company owners.”

*drily* I’d take this seriously except it’s Stephen Hotze, who has been an anti-LGBTQIA moral scold in Texas for decades.

ETA: Hotze was up to his eyeballs in this scandal last December:

HOUSTON — A former Houston police captain was arrested after allegedly running a man off the road and threatening him at gunpoint — what prosecutors say was part of an elaborate attempt to find evidence for a false conspiracy theory of widespread voter fraud in Harris County.

Mark Aguirre was working on behalf of a powerful Republican megadonor’s group to investigate unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud when, in October, he allegedly pulled a gun on a man described by the Harris County district attorney’s office as an “innocent and ordinary” air conditioner repairman.

These high-tech strawberries cost $6 apiece. Here’s what they taste and smell like.

Some months ago, a curious new strawberry began appearing in my social media feeds. The berry, which comes in packages of three, six or eight, was a uniform pale red. Each berry in each plastic carton looked almost exactly the same — heart-shaped, symmetrical and indented on the surface where, in a store-bought strawberry, yellow seeds would appear. One more notable thing: They cost between $5 and $6.25 apiece.

I saw Todd Rundgren walking down High Street in Columbus Ohio when I was a teenager. I was too shy to say anything but hi as he walked by. He had these amazing bright blue glasses on. When I was maybe 20, I was crossing the street and the guys from Black Oak Arkansas hit me with their van. Broke my wrist. My brushes with greatness, lol.

My kid on the other hand has met so many musicians I can’t begin to count. Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, Corey Taylor from Slipknot, he’s friends with Lindsay Matheson from Cradle of Filth and her own solo stuff(she’s super talented and really nice), and tons of others. He’s got a you tube channel where he interviews all kinds of metal musicians and he’s trying to coordinate interviews with an online site called Kaaos TV out of Finland. If you’re a serious metal fan you would recognize the names of all the bands and individuals he’s met and interviewed. I have no clue as to who half of them are, lol.
