speaking of idiots:

WASHINGTON — Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-Tennessee) introduced the “No Vaccine Passports for Americans Act” in the U.S. House Tuesday, her office announced.

The bill would prohibit any COVID-19 vaccine passport or similar system of tracking people for vaccination proof. It would also prohibit the United States from working with third parties, including airlines, to develop or impose restrictions.

The bill also would put in place a 5-year ban on government vaccine mandates for vaccines first authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through Emergency Use Authorization. Additionally, the bill would prohibit vaccine discrimination in employment, public accommodations, public transportation, or access to federal property.

“Vaccine passports are a restriction on individual liberties, period,” said Rep. Harshbarger. “I oppose these radical policies. That’s why I introduced the No Vaccine Passports for Americans Act to bar the already overreaching federal government from requiring vaccine passports. Our society needs to return to normal as soon as possible- our children have suffered through school closures, our businesses have suffered from strict lockdowns, and our economy is in desperate need of employees who will return to work. Banning vaccine passports will expedite the return to normal.”

The Senate version of the bill was introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz on May 27.

I still keep waiting to hear the “lie” that Dr. Fauci supposedly told that led to 600K+ dead Americans. Or, more realistically, what Trump would have done differently had the “lie” never occurred.

I’ve a “rational conservative” friend whose insistence is that if Dr. Fauci had just “told the truth” about masks, then people wouldn’t be so mad at him right now. As though telling the public that the only masks worth a damn were medical-grade ones, but that the supply was limited and needed to be reserved for hospitals and caretakers only would have stopped the public from hoarding.

Merrick Garland seems to operate as though the last four years didn’t happen, Jen Rubin
washingtonpost.com

Garland seems to be operating as though we had not undergone four years of the Justice Department running afoul of ethical standards and department policy — or worse, of the law. Are we simply to ignore the department’s meddling in the prosecution of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Barr’s ignoring of potential illegality in connection with the former president’s attempt to extort Ukraine, or Barr’s fanning doubt about mail-in ballots? And I suppose we are expected to forget signs that Barr tried to politicize election fraud investigations?

What we need in the post-Trump years is someone to uncover wrongdoing, make tough prosecutorial decisions and restore confidence that the current stable of Justice Department lawyers is ethical and competent.

Garland was chosen because he was “safe,” his confirmation pretty much guaranteed because so many Repubs were on record as praising his record even as they made excuses for why they couldn’t vote to put him on the SCOTUS bench. The trade-off for “safe” picks is they generally are “middle-of-the-road” types who make careers out of trying to please everybody and in the end not really pleasing anybody.

Biden could have chosen a firebrand who’d pledge to clean out the DOJ and hold Trump-era assholes to account, but it would probably would have ended up being a 51-50 vote (assuming Sinema and Manchin weren’t paid to have “issues” with the nomination).

But really, why is anybody surprised by the events happening with the DOJ? I’ve been calling it for literally months now, the attitude of this administration is exactly that of the Obama administration: “Move Forward.” Don’t hold anybody to account, don’t dig too deep, don’t try to clean out the festering wounds, just shut down all that talk because it sounds “partisan” and we don’t want to piss off the voters before the midterms. We can’t afford to lose seats, can’t afford to lose power, so just make a lot of noises about “looking into it” and “move forward.”

re: #2 The Pie Overlord!

Here’s the article!

It’s something most of us have known for our entire lives, but MTG hasn’t had a lot of time for learning, busy as she’s been with CrossFit and stalking AOC for clicks and spreading antisemitic theories. Like all people who learn something new, MTG announced her revelations with a press conference about the badness of the holocaust she opened with the modest and somewhat confusing announcement that “I always want to remind everyone, I’m very much a normal person.” She concluded by complaining about socialism with the baffling, “There is no veteran that signed up to serve in the military and there nobody that fought for our country because they wanted America to be a socialist country, they did it because they want America to be a free country.” It was as they say, a journey.

MAGA loves the Jews, well, sort of. One of the hallmarks of the far right is their obsession with Israel and their weird fondness for the Jewish people who need to be in Israel to help set the stage for the end times and the second coming. It’s a “love” that was helped along by mega donor Sheldon Adelson, who passed away earlier this year and who loved Israel, casinos and the GOP, though not necessarily in that order.

Pompeo told POLITICO in a telephone interview that he was starting a political action committee that will allow him to travel the country and campaign, fundraise and donate to GOP office-seekers. Oh, there will be crowds wherever he goes, but nothing like he once had. Every rally he tried to host last year ended up either canceled or turning into an embarrassment due to low attendance. The smart play would be to target smaller venues with cheap tickets that would ensure healthy attendance, cutting out as much extraneous shit as possible to keep costs down and enthusiasm up, and count on the morbid curiosity of the press to make up for the small audience.

But all of that would be an affront to the ego of a man who still thinks he’s as big a draw as he was in 2016, so he’ll demand a huge venue in a major city, charging scalper prices for nosebleed seats in order to pad his pockets, and to book various guest speakers to kiss his ass while the audience sits in boredom waiting for him to make his (very late) appearance.

Alabama state Rep. Chris Pringle (R) was asked to define “critical race theory,” which he seeks to make illegal to teach in schools.

Said Pringle: “It basically teaches that certain children are inherently bad people because of the color of their skin, period.”

When asked for an example, Pringle replied: “These people, when they were doing the training programs — and the government — if you didn’t buy into what they taught you a hundred percent, they sent you away to a reeducation camp.”

They hate CRT because a racist propagandist on Fox told them to be upset about it, and now their voters insist that they be upset about it. If Republicans didn’t insist on being lied to, and that the lies be acted upon, things like this could be avoided.

Gopher Hawk - best purchase I made all Covid. The yellow band means the snare has been sprung. No, I didn’t take a pic of the dead gopher at the end when I pulled it out of the ground.

Hole popped up yesterday morning, I put the trap in the ground in the afternoon, and voila. I look at lawns down the street and they’re trashed. Mine used to be trashed before I got this magic wand.

Well, well, well, this is interesting.

Mike Stone is the former head of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. As such, he is UP TO HIS EYEBALLS in the coverup of child sexual abuse. Additionally, last night, there was this:

And then Stone issued this:

I know nothing about Ed Litton except that he’s the pastor of a church in Arkansas. He is, for sure, no liberal, but so far as I know, he is not one of the guys who swept child sexual abuse under the rug, but who also stood on said rug, on said corner.

I will say this, though, if the SBC wants to go completely en fuego, they should elect Mike Stone. In between the SBC’s racism and the SBC’s inability to deal with child sexual abuse, people and congregations will walk.

ETA: This is a huge slapdown of Al Mohler, current president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. He is Not A Nice Person. He covered up child sexual abuse as well, he hates uppity (and non-uppity) women. Last week he was losing his shit about yoga in Alabama schools. So this is quite the smack.

CRT is just a new spin on the same tired shit that’s been sold by wingnuts since the days of Nixon, the idea that whites have to stand up for themselves or else they find themselves in danger of being “replaced.” And that “socialists” are accomplishing this by teaching white children to be subservient to their black/brown/etc “masters.”

And here’s the “re-education” camp Pringle has nightmares about…

completely off topic to anything, but somehow I’ve gotten started collecting Time’s Reading Program books from the early to mid-60’s. It’s an absolutely delightful collection of fiction and non-fiction reissues that I gather were once part of promotions, or sold through the reading club. My dad must have been a member because I remember there being a ton of them around the house, now that I’m conscious of what they are. If you don’t remember them, they are really nicely made “plastic” backs, with matte inside covers, and tasteful font choices and illustrations. I’m assuming they stopped after 4 years because they just couldn’t possibly make any money producing them and selling them for what they probably went for. Recently, I’ve been through The Beast of the Haitian Hills, and Carson McCullers’s Member of the Wedding, both of which are damned good short novels. Currently reading C.V. Wedgewood’s A Coffin for King Charles, about the final days leading up to his execution. The best thing about the series is that no one anywhere apparently has an absolute sense of how many books were in the series. There are lists online, but the lists don’t seem to be definitive. Oh, forgot to mention that the covers themselves are generally so good that they won numerous design awards at the time the books were published.

From the Vice article on this:

I have read comics since I could reach them down from the magazine shelf in my local grocery story, and DC’s insistence that Bruce Wayne is only celibate for marketing reasons doesn’t ring true to me. Nor does it to many, many Batman fans, who see this as a pretty accurate read on a guy who dresses up like a bat to fight crime instead of dealing with the trauma of his parents’ death. I don’t think that is a person comfortable enough with their own vulnerability to be a giving lover, and apparently DC agrees.

re: #149 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

re: #153 Backwoods_Sleuth

for federal employees, probably

Correct. Public holidays only apply to the federal government (minus essential personnel such as the military, medical personnel, &c).

No public holiday requires businesses to give you time off. That only comes from broad public recognition that the day should be off (such as Independence Day or Christmas), and even then some businesses will be open on those days.

The text of S. 475:

A BILL

To amend title 5, United States Code, to designate Juneteenth National Independence Day as a legal public holiday.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. Short title.

This Act may be cited as the “Juneteenth National Independence Day Act”.

SEC. 2. Juneteenth National Independence Day as a legal public holiday.

Section 6103(a) of title 5, United States Code, is amended by inserting after the item relating to Memorial Day the following:

” Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19.”.

congress.gov

6103(a) Title 5 USC is the list of public holidays. That law has to be amended to add Juneteenth to the list of public holidays for federal workers, hence its inclusion.

law.cornell.edu

On the other hand, the text of the bill does not include amending 4 U.S. Code § 6 - Time and occasions for display (part of the US Flag Code, goes to Cornell Law School) the list of flag observances, so by the text of this bill, Juneteenth is not an official flag observance.

Senator. A word, if I may. Have you considered, just maybe, that it isn’t the Pledge of Allegiance, maybe it isn’t the American flag… Maybe - just MAYBE - it’s the fact that you’re a completely unmitigated asshole treasonweasel whom the majority of this country would like to have tarred, feathered, and run out of the country on a rail. Before you go running your yap on how you’re “mak[ing] liberal heads explode”, you might want to stop and think that maybe it’s just you.

The more than 15,000 delegates in attendance picked as their next leader Ed Litton, a white pastor from Alabama who was nominated by Fred Luter, the only Black pastor to serve as president of the United States’ largest Protest denomination. Luter praised Litton’s commitment to racial reconciliation and said he has dealt compassionately with the issue of sexual abuse within SBC churches, another hot-button subject at the gathering.

In the second round of voting, Litton defeated Mike Stone, a Georgia pastor backed by a new group called the Conservative Baptist Network, which encouraged supporters to come to the meeting as voting delegates. Mike Stone had campaigned aggressively, including speaking at churches across the country and even appearing on Fox & Friends on Tuesday before the vote.

In the end the message that Stone — who supported a motion to repudiate critical race theory — was a divisive choice, seemed to resonate with voters.

Up here in Canada we have what are called Girl Guides. They have an annual cookie drive. I’m what might be called a cookie aficionado (or a Cookie Monster, same diff) and Girl Guide cookies are the worst cookies I’ve ever had. They’re so bad I opened the box, are a couple, and put the rest in the trash.

Maybe they could do a deal with the Girl Scouts and get a good deal on great cookies.

Kid down the street just rang the doorbell to tell me he’s selling lemonade. So, being a good neighbor I filled a cup with ice, found some loose cash and bought a glass…then topped it with tequila when I got home. Now this is pink lemonade I can get behind.

I just….sorry, I do not buy lemonade made by neighborhood kids. No idea what the quality control is there.

I’m really hoping the Canadian government opens the border when they next meet for discussions about it. Canada revisits the closure every month to decide whether it should be extended another month.

I’ll flee to Canada and live on the Via Rail “The Canadian” until the USA gets sane.

(The only problem is where to start on the train trip. We have a friend in Vancouver who says he’d be happy to let us park the Smart at his house while we travel. That involves driving through the wingnut portions of Idaho and Washington though.)

ON THE BUCKET LIST—Taking the Coast Starlight to Seattle then the shuttle to Vancouver, then ride the Canadian to Montreal and then ride the Adirondack to New York from New York take a Northeast train to DC then take the Capitol Limited to Chicago and next board the California Zephyr to Emoryville then go back home on the Coast Starlight.

Same at the new office park Cabela’s built next to their flagship store in Sidney, Nebr., right before they sold the chain to Bass Pro Shops.

Now the office park doesn’t even have that use: It stands empty because Bass Pro Shops fired all the corporate staff there and at the downtown corporate office.

Bass Pro Shops wants to lease the office park next to the store, but who is going to move their corporation to a town of 6,000?

If you need an office park, you can lease it for $1. Really.

Usually We’re All About the Catch. This Time, There Isn’t One.
$1 a year will get you $35 million worth of office space.
(Goes to Cabela’s)

I’ll bet it has air conditioning. Maybe I should lease it and move in.

Aside from the kabuki theatre here Senator (are you doing this alone in an Admiralty Court, since the flag has gold fringe), what the fuque are you yammering about?

In this ultra-conservative town I am one of the few people that actually flies a flag. We Democrats are obviously more performative patriotic here. /s)

Minnesota BBQ: We do Kansas City style, pickle it, and stick it outside in a freezer chest to keep through the winter.////

The irony is that Ted Cruz will be one of the first former US Senators to pledge allegiance to a new flag of any right-wing fascist confederation of territories formerly known as part of the USA. That is the true cause of nausea from that picture.
