IT’S GOHMERT! Louie Says He Knows the Forest Service Can’t Change the Moon’s Orbit Because It’s Not Their Job

Politics • Views: 17,367

In today’s episode, Louie helpfully explains that he was being sarcastic, he knows the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management can’t actually change the moon’s orbit to fix climate change because it’s “not their job,” but “there’s some professor who thinks we might could adjust our orbit, but that’s still yet to be arrived at scientifically, but it’s an interesting concept.”

I’d like to thank the voters of Texas for sending this man to Congress.

Weather here in eastern PA has been near perfect the past few days. Clear blue sky, relatively low humidity, and temps topping out in the mid-70s during the afternoon and dropping into the low-60s/high-50s at night.

Allergies making me sniffle, but trying to spend a good deal of time outside. (And coordinating Floof Cat outside time with the neighbor so that the two cat clusters do not encounter each other.)

Must be nice. The temperatures have been all over the board here, but generally in the mid-80’s. Today it’s supposed to be 89, though at least there are clouds. Thunderstorms promised on Sunday will bring cooler temperatures behind them.

It is quite nice. Plan on enjoying it while I can since I expect shortly it will convert to the much more humid and temps in the 80s that seem to me to be the usual summer weather for the area. (And will get into the low-90s in July and August, possibly for an extended period of time.)

I wish I had flagged it, but I cruised past a “No, GHOMERT! didn’t actually ask if BLM could adjust the Earth and/or Moon’s orbit, here’s what he meant” bullshit piece a few days ago.

It’s fucking clear as day he meant it. His follow-up just cements that.

I get that people make mistakes and don’t explain themselves as well as they could, and the Internet just makes everything worse. Every so often, though, someone repeatedly exposes themselves as the rock stupid dumbfuck they truly are. GHOMERT! is one of these people.

In a similar vein, I don’t think Jon Stewart was being sarcastic or doing a bit, as that piece on GHOMERT! was saying. I hate both siding stuff, but in this case, Stewart is the opposite: someone incredibly smart who leaned out their skis too far because they couldn’t recognize their own limitations on a particular subject.

As a thought experiment, some actual science types have speculated about what it would take to adjust the Earth’s orbit by human effort, and how it would be done. I don’t remember the energy requirements they calculated, but it was in the tera-fuquetonnes, or possibly more.

It’s all about mass. Earth’s orbit is changing slightly each year (further away from the sun) as Earth’s mass increases from picking up various space dust, asteroids, etc. Of course in order to make a meaningful change, we’d need a lot more mass.

There’s a whole industry in France built around breeding and training dogs and pigs to find truffles. Successful critters are quite valuable.

Truffle-extraction:

Because truffles are subterranean, they are often located with the help of an animal possessing a refined sense of smell. Traditionally, pigs have been used for the extraction of truffles. Both the female pig’s natural truffle-seeking, and her usual intent to eat the truffle, are due to a compound within the truffle similar to androstenol, the sex pheromone of boar saliva, to which the sow is keenly attracted. Studies in 1990 demonstrated that the compound actively recognized by both truffle pigs and dogs is dimethyl sulfide.

In Italy, the use of the pig to hunt truffles has been prohibited since 1985 because of damage caused by animals to truffle mycelia during the digging that dropped the production rate of the area for some years. An alternative to truffle pigs are dogs. Dogs pose an advantage in that they do not have a strong desire to eat truffles, so can be trained to locate sporocarps without digging them up. Pigs attempt to dig up truffles.

These odd looking and smelly growths are insanely expensive. As with most commodities, there is a website devoted to the market for them.
Truffle Price Tracker.

re: #79 Charles Johnson

my great-great-great-uncle Phil

On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3: “The people are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, ‘all slaves are free.’

“This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property, between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them, becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain at their present homes, and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts; and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

But who actually wrote the Juneteenth order? I offer a “spoiler alert” that the answer isn’t Granger. The first sentence declaring that “all slaves are free” and the last two sentences warning the freedmen to stay home and continue working came from an earlier order by Gen. Philip Sheridan.

Decades of jamming conspiracy crap down people’s throats, and what do you know. The Russian government and media were also dumb enough to scaremonger AZ and Pfizer vaccines, and not realize that Russians would figure that it applied to Sputnik as well. A couple of weeks after declaring that making vaccines mandatory was unworkable, they’re now mandated in Moscow for most workers, which should help, but it’s pretty late to stave off this wave.

Breaking extremely local news:

Our floor furnace failed during the third blizzard of the season here, back in February. We put in calls to half the state trying to get someone out to either repair it or replace it.

A call just came in from a plumbing and heating firm in Gering, Nebr. we’ve used before for plumbing problems.

They will send someone here to inspect our furnace on June 23, to see if it can be repaired or if it should be replaced.

My wife countered with the idea that they just retire this ancient piece of early XX Century equipment, and install a combo wall furnace/air conditioner in our house.

They liked that idea, offering to hook us up with financing.

She said no to the financing, we have plenty of money to pay for it.

So yay, we might get a new heater in July or so. (I’m all for the air conditioning part though.)

That was a pivotal day for me, I had so much fun skiing with this loud dude with a blue mohawk. All the kids who kept up with Plake that day were sharing in his discovery, that skiing is a fountain of youth.

I also saw something that day that I’ve only seen a couple of times since, Plake did some ski ballet for us.

The following is a good definition of conservatism:

Political conservatism is the view that there should be a privileged group that the law protects but does not bind, and an oppressed group that the law binds but does not protect.

But the defect of this definition is that it overstates the relevance of law. A real conservative is ultimately lawless — conservatism is the Nazi version of will to power, literally uber alles.

Actually, this is a good example of why numbers are so important in science. It is perfectly possible (in principle) to alter the earth’s orbit — e.g., with rocket engines attached to earth. The impossibility here is quantitative — any feasible rocket engine will have an utterly minuscule effect on the earth’s motion.

Musical interlude. A former roommate of mine grew up with these guys in Michigan. Jam band shit, so if you’re not into that thing scroll on.

They got off very easy. Seems a shame.

This seems like a better outcome than the prosecutors trying for more serious charges like brandishing or menacing w/firearms and failing (inevitably, IMO) to convict.

re: #221 jaunte

These assholes have a real problem spending taxpayer dollars on actual taxpayers don’t they? I can’t imagine hating poor people for being poor, how fucking miserable do you have to be to do that? JFC, it’s a million times easier to be kind, generous and compassionate than it is to be a destructive, raging asshole. It certainly takes less energy. What these pricks don’t get is that most poor people actually do work. What’s missing is adequate pay to live on. Force employers to adhere to a uniform living wage(because most of them aren’t going to follow the rules without force and monitoring), paid days off, and some kind of access to affordable and adequate healthcare. And FFS let people work their way up in your company. Recognize hard work and reward it. Be a hero, not a greedy POS. Sigh.

I used to think they just didn’t get the meaning of “a rising tide lifts all boats.”
Now I know they just want to sink the boats they’re not in.

I like it better when THEIR boats sink … like the ones at a Trumpian boat parade.
